For the record, the Joker is absolutely *not* afraid of death, at least hypothetically, because Joker is betting that *when* he dies, it's going to be as a 'martyr' in a sick, twisted sense. Think Injustice or The Batman Who Laughs, where Joker's death is the catalyst for death, pain, and destruction. Or at the very least, he wants to die in a way that will satisfy his ideology, like having Batman finally snap and kill him. But being scared of Frank wasn't a contradiction to this at all. Here he was in the middle of a dark, rainy alleyway where no one would notice or hear his death, done by the hands of a man he doesn't know, who's putting him down just as he would as any other common thug, so no one would be 'breaking a code'. Joker's death would've had no meaning, no poetic justice (in his eyes), and it would've been in a completely unremarkable way that would've had him be forgotten easily. Joker treats his death as a joke with a punchline, but Frank wasn't willing to let him have it.

Damian Wayne for instance had the intention to beat him to death with a crowbar, Jason Todd almost blew his brains out trying to force Batman to break his one rule and Deathstroke signed a contract to kill Joker as well in another storyline, etc None of these moments phased Joker. But you're discounting the fact that Joker was willing to die that night. He even attempted suicide by bombing all three of them when Batman found a way to win without killing him or Jason. By characterization the dude doesn't fear death.
Also Joker has a twisted fantasy of driving Batman off the deep end where Batman finally kills him. So he may know that Batman would probably not end up killing him but if he did he'd see it as a victory.
With Deathstroke there was no emotional vendetta, no revenge or personal reason either. He wasn't afraid and in fact welcomed the challenge. For Deathstroke Joker was just another target.
I still doubt that Joker would fear Castle but probably would feel personally insulted due to his narcissism if he didn't treat him as special. It would most likely anger him rather than have him pissing his pants.

I think Joker wants to die in a very specific way: Being murdered by a good person, he wants to drive someone to the point where they WANT to kill him, not out of genuinely protecting themselves or someone else when there’s no other way, but because they hate him so much that they’d do it unnecessarily.
Being murdered by someone like Frank Castle, who is already a murderer and rarely claims to be a good man, would mean he died a meaningless and unremarkable death.

While he doesn't claim what he is doing as good. He doesn't view his actions as evil either. He is a tool of retribution for the actual victims and nothing more. In a way he is actually more just then the systems that are in place to protect.

Joker is a character whose goal is to die, he wants to have a symbol of good and heroism to kill him to point out that it is just one bad day away for anyone to become a murderer. Animated series pointed this out perfectly when Joker got scared that some nobody would take his life and leave his legacy as " killed by some rando ". With Castles there was barely any hesitation or humanity, just hatred and bloodlust with nothing to corrupt or twist. His legacy would end up as "victim of punisher", and that is just no one special. Nope. Read classic Batman comics of the 80's and 90's, he's been targeted for death on several occasions. The Deathstroke example I mentioned came out before this comic was even published. He was aware of Slade Wilson's reputation as one of the world's most dangerous killers for hire and it did not phase him
      2. That makes absolutely no sense. Joker clearly saw Frank kill dozens of his men. The hell does he expect? Joker in the comics is displayed to be a genius on the level of Batman, if anything he'd try to talk his way out of a dangerous situation to get his attacker to drop their guard so he can either escape or go all in for the kill. In this case, if it was clear that he couldn't escape, he'd most likely have tried to pull the latter. This has been displayed many times throughout the comics. In Devils Advocate for instance, which came out in 1996. Two years after this comic but still relevant to this discussion. A convict with a murder count of 80 people, attempted to murder Joker while he was in prison. Joker feigned helplessness and terror to get the inmate to drop his guard, in which he proceeded to beat him to death with his own shoe.
3.This is the comics dude lol not the animated series that severely nerfed his character's capacity for violence and bloodshed for a kids rating. You don't really seem like someone who's read that many Batman comics if you think Joker would quake in fear of someone just because they pointed a gun at him.
That has happened to him on countless occasions in gang wars with other villains in Gotham and the many attempts on his life from his long list of enemies he's made throughout his career. @@anomalocaris2593

One of my biggest annoyances with the Batman/Joker dynamic is how some writers make Batman a safety net, especially in situations like these. In one comic, Batman even brought the Joker back to life, while he himself dies. And it’s like why???
Joker knows that Batman won’t kill him, which is why he does the things he do. He kills, he gets beat up, he goes to jail, rinse and repeat.
While Batman and the Punisher will be at complete odds because of how the others vigilante works. I feel like Batman wouldn’t tell Joker to run, I don’t think he’ll let the Punisher kill the Joker in front of him, but he would turn a blind eye if something happened to the Joker, idk
I do want a comic that goes in depth of a Joker death that Batman doesn’t stop and is not the cause of and see the aftermath of that, that would be cool.

I thought the rationale behind letting the Joker live/not killing him is explained pretty well in the DCAMU movie "Under The Red Hood." Batman know that if he gives in to the side of him that's screaming to end this madness permanently (i.e. by killing the Joker), he'll never stop killing the villains simply BECAUSE Joker is the WORST of them. It's like a Domino effect.

However, with him being the worlds greatest detective and him doing the Batman thing for so long, I feel like a part of him should realize that Joker can not be rehabilitated. Try as he might, he put Joker in Arkham (which needs better security, actually) too many times for him to actually come out well.
I feel like if Joker did ever cross a line, like say killing Barbara or something equally horrible, Batman wouldn’t stop the person from getting their revenge.

In most depictions the GCPD wants to arrest batman (as they should) at first, but eventually they just learn to live with it because while yes, he’s another costumed crazy, he’s on the side of perceived good. nevertheless, batman could end crime, or just let jason do it, if it was about keeping the city safe, and not creating an infinite childlike fantasy for himself, that is. Arkham Asylum ASHOSE is certainly not the only, but definitely one of the better comics to address this issue.

Batman doesn't have the stones to do what needs to be done
He acts like hes a badass but hes really a squeamish punk who cant except the fact that sometimes people need to be put down to keep innocents safe

Normally don't like narration vids like this, but I was pleasantly surprised. Almost like one of those Disney movie Read-Along tapes from...(fuck me) over forty years ago.
