Having worked in IT for over 25 years, you did a great job at explaining this. Great work on setting this up as well... a good video. As a side note, you basically won the nerd lottery getting all that gear. I would be over the moon to have that level of equipment at home. Certainly not cheap!! Perhaps a follow-up video is explaining the importance of off-site backups. In case of a house fire, you stand the potential to now lose 10's of terabytes of data. An off-site strategy is needed. Also, re that noise, you can get a solid rubber mat to put under the NAS which will greatly help reduce the vibration noise. I would not recommend anything soft like bubble wrap or cloth as they can attract dust.
Always surprised by the number of people who think RAID 1 and 10 give a full backup solution, and then get disappointed when they find that a file they edited is present on the mirror as the edited version too.

Being a photographer and a quite techy computer geek myself it is really nice to see how you cover a lot of topics I would often just take for granted and totally forget to mention if someone would ask me - especially the jumbo frames is really essential and something a lot of people might not know or think of. Regarding the noise, you can control the fan level manually in QNAP's interface, but with so many spindle drives as you got in your NAS the main noise would be coming from all those drives for sure, I got the same issue with my NAS boxes - so they are all located securely in a storage space in a different room than my office, to avoid my ears from the painful noise of spinning drives all day long :-) I think someone else already recommended in the comments, getting a UPS is a very good idea - both for your PC but especially also one for your NAS :-)

Recently Qnap drives around the world were exposed to and exploited by hacking/ransomware through the Qnap-cloud. All files below 20mb were encrypted and the vulnerability was the Qnap-cloud. The company offered a solution which would PERHAPS function, approximately a month later, but only if nothing was touched on the drives. When I had the problem and contacted Qnap they told me that I should have had updated my firmware and so on. The firmware was updated, security-scans were done twice each 24 hours and even though I lost all files sized 20mb or below..... Today I don't rely on a NAS.... All files are now backed up by a cloud storage service and when I compare the monthly payment for cloud Vs NAS I really appreciate the security and convenience. The cost of buying hardware makes up for several years of buying cloud-storage. But... Very nice and informative video!!!

A simple and straightforward insight in to NAS for those that probably are not sure what it is or if they need one. It was obvious from the start that this was a sponsored video as you clearly mentioned this along with the names of the sponsors, so I don't see a problem there. This is expensive kit but in relation to the outlay already made on getting the pictures/video's it may well turn out to be a cost effective solution. I suspect all photographers/videographers have a at least some form of backup via an external drive or cloud solution and it doesn't take long to fill up these backups. The NAS solution may be a bit of overkill for some but I can see the benefit for others, such as knowing where your data is (cloud drives can be anywhere). I've enjoyed all the videos I've managed to see of yours so far and look forward to not only catching up on the older content but to see what new adventures yourself and Sophie embark on in the future.
Definitely not a beginner's experience, I would say. I have a two bay QNAP NAS, with no SSD option, although it does include up to 2GB of RAM. It was very easy to set up, using the software tools you mention, and could be configured in any number of ways, also as you mention. Very impressed with QNAP products. Even my simple setup is fast, responsive and reliable. On the question of putting bubble wrap under the drive, definitely don't do that because of the airflow constraints. There are lots of simple vibration pads that can be purchased. Even mouse pads can be used if necessary. The best solution might simply be to move it off the desk. Thanks for sharing.
If you just need more storage and "backup" then NAS is not the way to go. Most people should instead consider a multi-bay drive enclosure or just add more hard drives to their desktop if they are using a desktop computer. NAS shines when you have a small office or home where multiple computers need to access the same data. Don't buy a NAS because you need more storage.
I built my own pc 2 and a half years ago and I didn't understand half what you said. I will definitely have to study up on this further. I did put an NVMe drive in mine for the OS and software. My pictures are stored on a Western digital yellow 2 TB hard drive. What I saw on the yellow was they are for servers and last twice as long and are made to run 24/7. I will look into the red drives. I don't think I need a NAS what that many bays. I think 4 drives will be plenty. I also don't know if I'll need 14 TB drives. I haven't really started working for the public yet but I'm about to. I need to upgrade my CPU and ram first. I can't find graphics cards right now because of all the scalpers buying them up to mark the prices up. Nobody has any in stock. I need to back up my photos though. My Lightroom is not organized very well. I have pictures I can't find anywhere and some ended up on my C drive. I didn't have my D drive (2 TB) up and running when I first started. I need to find some videos on how to set up backup storage for pictures and how to organize Lightroom with the drives.

When you consider the file sizes of today’s pro camera’s, 40 - 50 megapixel plus added to that the 8K video and throwing in all that drone footage, for good measure, it’s not really hard to see how useful that storage setup you now possess will be.
Just in case, I observed that was used single NVMe as cache. If is true, my suggestion to make a pool from NVMe connected in mirror and assign the pool as cache. From what I found in I-net resources, if cache failed, then may results the lose of data.

A lot to take in there Mads, but it certainly looks an impressive set up. Not so much a technical question but more of a practical question. When you go on your travels again, will the NAS provide you with a way of doing a remote back up, i.e can you transfer images from you camera onto a laptop then subsequently instigate a remote back up on to your NAS at home? I will confess I have limited knowledge of NAS and was wondering if this was achievable

We are drowning in data and our dependency on sophisticated technologies are mind boggling. Still if you get burgled there is nothing left unless you also take measures in that regard and that becomes even more difficult the more data you have to begin with. I'm waiting for 1 petabyte (1024 terabytes) per 1 cubic centimeter storage so I can leave a couple of backups at friends and family. Hopefully devices and drivers will be around for a long time to read them.
As Felix says.. NAS is no backup.. I had a NAS disk my self and had somewhere between 26 and 27.000 pictures stored on it... Until lightning struck.. One fash, a HUGE bang and no more pictures.. Now I store all my puctures on 3 seperate disks that I can connect to my pc with at USB3.1 tacking a backup and disconnect them again.. Never going to loose them again.. :D
Yeah, I'm worried about that myself, but I haven't come up with a better solution just yet. Maybe a lot of small cloth patches can work being places underneath each leg 🤔

I went to a NAS setup about 5 years ago basically to get more room on my hard drives. Last year one of my drives failed and Raid 5 restored my files.

I installed my first NAS about three decades ago, and currently using 3x NAS and 1x DAS. Plus DVD/BD & off-site backup. 🙂

Place the NAS somewhere where you can't hear it. It doesn't have to be in the same room once it is installed.
