I was life long friends with Mark Forster who was Black Sabbath's Tour and Personnel manager from 1974 until he passed in 1991. Mark knew Raymond A'ddario and Colin Hart who were managing Rainbow in 1978 and I was fortunate enough to meet Ritchie on a few occasions. But during the last Never Say Die tour of that year Van Halen was opening for Sabbath. During an afternoon sound check in Nashville, I approached Eddie in front of his Marshall amps and asked him what he thought about Blackmore (as he was my favorite since 1970, I was 15). Eddie said, and I quote: "He has always been an influence, but I think he needs to play with his band more inside of just blowing out a solo then retracting back into his own world". I am 68 now and hope to one day finalize my own manuscript which will have this and many other moments that I consider interesting enough for a certain segment of the population. I enjoyed hearing your story Mr. Rosen though Eddie did not express any negative feelings about Ritchie during my one encounter. Pat Renau

Specifically 11 November 1979, the Bonnet-fronted line up played long beach Arena. Despite the inference here, Randy hansen's story was that Blackmore told him he and his band was so good he ought to go on last. After Eddie’s death Blackmore said. “He was one of the nicest musicians I ever met in the music business. Very shy and not at all conceited about his ability as a guitar player...”

It is so interesting to note that Rtichie influenced on every guitar player of this world who tried play a bit faster than Eric Clapton😂. Malmsteen and EVH are two of those for sure, but they are still making out like they such an unique musicicans who don't have any connections to Ritchie and his playing😂.

I was at this Rainbow concert at L.A. Forum. It was the first Rainbow tour with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals. I remember seeing Eddie and Alex Van Halen were sitting at about 5th row center. Didn't see them myself but a huge crowd was gathered around them. Ritchie apparently unplugged Randy Hanson's amp towards the end of his set.

Don Airey tried to introduce Eddie and Gary Moore (who were friends) to Ritchie in Long Beach, CA. Airey said he made the introductions but Blackmore said nothing to either guitarist and just stormed off. Don has told this story more than once. (In fact it's on YT.)

A long-winded non-story. It seems a very innocuous comment from Blackmore, why make it out to be anything other than that? In the UK, for example, people josh their friends like that all the time.

Poor ED ....Possibly Ritchie was just using understatement ('Don't you play the guitar' ?) as part of his ironic deadpan humour ? ...He possibly didn't mean it to have the negative consequence on Ed which it did.....The thing about Ritchie's humour is it was SO DEADPAN that you were never quite sure if he was joking or not...& that's why Ed took it worse than Ritchie intended it to be taken.....Ed had a bad experience with Ritchie before of course when he went up to greet him with John Bonham when Ed was unknown & Ritchie & Bonham told poor Ed to 'F*ck off' ...Sometimes possibly its not a good idea to meet your heroes because they can turn around & be really CRUEL to you & do you serious damage...However good & sincere your intentions are. I've had experience of this myself. You really genuinely want to compliment & support someone & they go-'Who are you, yer demanding fan, I don't know you from Adam, now f*ck off & let me be'....Even though their influence was the reason you picked up an instrument 44 years ago & worked hard at playing ever since....This is MORE than being a mere 'FAN'....This is being influenced into life changing decisions to become a musician when you were just a kid.... ED KNEW WHAT IT FELT LIKE to be on the RECEIVING END OF THAT HEARTLESS DISMISSIVE INGRATITUDE ....Which is why I had great empathy for Ed being treated like that by Ritchie back then. Although when Ed passed away Ritchie actually wrote a LOVELY tribute to Ed & his unique contribution to the evolution of the instrument.

Ritchie was already trolling press and public DECADES before the internet. His whole thing about the SOTW riff being Beethoven's Fifth backwards is a classic example. People still quote that story and believe it's (somehow) legit.
