    From everything I hear, TLPs just don’t sound fun for the way I want to interact with EQ. I want to relive my nostalgic favorite game, group with folks, explore all the zones and dungeons, and have fun with the lore.
    What I don’t want to do is race to the max level as fast as I can, “sticking to the plan” and ignoring content, raiding a few targets over and over, and doing so in a game whose mechanics, zones and community structure have been changed from what I played in the past.

      The best you're going to do is play on P99 when they release a new server, or to join Project Quarm right now and just play the game, meet people, and explore Norrath.

    I'm a player from 15 years ago and got excited to see TLP servers. Brings back a lot of memories. I talked a few of my friends to come back and play. We saw the krono option and got a little nervous about it. We are in our 40's right now and haven't experienced too many issues yet. There was a time in Unrest where someone was pulling the whole zone. At the moment we are enjoying Yelinak and have met some nice people to play with. Time will tell to see where it goes. Enjoy your stories and videos. Thanks!

    A solution could be if all the friendly-minded community was actually able to get together and e.g. vote on the most desired new type of server to make, and then was actually able to make it. E.g. "Classic to Luclin", or the like, with some of the most desired QoL features implemented.
    P99 is good, but it's still a sort of TLP with the timed changes along the way. Another option could be to just choose what are most desirable from day one, instead of the P99 approach of "re-creating the exact old timeline of EQ". I very much like P99, and still actively enjoy playing there, but I think there are better options, which we've still not seen any emulated server make use of. In that sense, P99 is quite "stuck in its ways", if you like. Only the community can change that by making an even better server catering to all the communities best interests with friendliness and the social aspect in mind. That might never happen though.

    • @demris15
      @demris15 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agreed… I don’t love p99 because it’s exact to the era, I love it because the difficulty is the same, the zones are the same. They could add instances and faster xp for groups and I’d be happy

    Hey man, I really enjoy your editing style! You do a good job storytelling with your gameplay and kept it interesting, all while working in a good discussion about the TLP servers. It's a really good pace that is super easy to watch!
    My 2¢ about EQ TLP.. I was an active raider in a "hardcore" batphone style guild spanning Ragefire/Phinigel/Agnarr TLP servers. At that time, it was mostly kronolord boxers (using VMware to run a ton of characters) fighting it out against our most dedicated members. We usually had 24/7 watch over open world targets with a few of our guys taking turns scouting, then we batphone the spawn and hope we mobilize fast enough to get the target. Most of the time, we would end up in a training war with the boxer while we tug-of-war the boss to death. Eventually after months of battling it out, agreements were arranged with some of the kronolords to not step on each others feet if we could avoid it. The "DPS is king" wild west style rule does have some fun in it. There's a lot of freedom and gameplay involved in fighting for high end open world targets. It's definitely for a very small part of the EQ TLP audience, but it puts a smile on my face remembering the 4am batphone DPS races that we clutched out.
    That being said, you're absolutely spot on about casual players being the ones who miss out the most with the TLPs existing like this. The majority of the EQ TLP audience will struggle with boxers bullying them out of zones and forcing them to depend on instance lockouts for loot. It's unfortunate that it sounds like krono farmers are becoming more of a problem than they may have been a few years back, but I appreciate the game for what it is. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but the game would improve a lot if they could step it up on disciplining people that take it too far with cheating, zone monopolizing, and circumventing true-box rules.

    I love kronos since I dont like paying IRL cash for game time, but I hate how it controls the market. I kinda wanna quit tlp since people like Fipp sells water staffs for 10 - 12 kronos each. Its not fun to deal with boxers since ive been fcked over a lot by Eqcorp (they trained my group in hole since they wanted our camp) or they forcefully take our camp to take the camp since it gives kronos
    I also hate how they say "Camps dont exist", sure daybreak doesnt officially support it but it ruins the game to not have camps. It makes it unfun to just fight people for mobs

    Ion I would like to recommend a way of playing on a TLP that at least partly ignores the jerks camping epic pieces. I have a group that started this way on Aradune and we're still playing, and to be honest this is the most fun I've ever had in EQ - and especially with raiding: Get a very small crew and everyone 1 or 2 boxes depending on their preference - pretty much all of us 2 boxes because it doubles our personal power but it's not mandatory, some of us still 1 box. We started with 5 people in classic and had a few people join and leave throughout the 2+ years so far, and we currently have 10 people on our regular raid roster.
    Why does this change things?
    1) You have to learn how the raid encounters actually work, and figure out ways to beat the encounters without just throwing more people at it.
    2) Every action everyone does in a raid matters - everyone counts on everyone else and it raises the bar.
    3) You don't have to do anything that you don't want to do - don't want to do 15 epic fights to get epics for those new members that might never show up to raids? Don't have to worry about it!
    4) Everyone has agency in the guild - you're a small crew, talk about what you want to do instead of having to worry about command structures.
    5) You don't have to deal with the krono farmers (as much) because you can get everything you need from instances because your requirements are so low by virtue of player numbers.
    You might not be able to do all the cutting edge content, but every boss kill feels SO much sweeter because of the investment needed, and we've found our gear is generally better than a lot of people in the big guilds because we have such a smaller pool of bodies that even the rare drops that typically everyone always wants - everyone gets eventually.

      I'd agree with this, I've been playing with 5 buddies and we all 4-6 box (legitimately)...we're currently clearing all of Omens of War and its been really chill to casually work our way through progression every expansion (on Mischief, the free trade is great for gearing boxes out quickly). I gave up with playing a single toon many years ago due to the exact problems you mentioned!

    This is the problem I have with almost every multiplayer video game these days, everyone is LARPing being a pro nolife gamer. Let alone MMOs which turn it up a notch because of RMT and 30 year old boomer playerbase who are time poor but money rich, still wanting to play the games of their youth with the best gears in the game. What happened to playing games for fun? What happened to moderating your game? I miss the days gaming wasn't measured by the size of your wallet, but the skills and teamwork of what you did ingame. As a European these RMTers are even worse because half of European countries are poor, so their people earn garbage wages for even professional jobs, so our games are filled with people who essentially work games to sell items and services to earn a living from richer European countries.

    My opinion: their *worst* mistake was spreading the games geography too thin. Instead of letting the game evolve with the player base (I'm looking at you, kunark firiona vie still under construction!), they turned virtually every zone into an unused ghost town. Big games are great, if you have enough people to fill them.. I wonder when the last kelethin drunken race was? I'm sure the towns folk miss the good ol days. Lol. What they should have done, is had things like this: endgame raid: crushbone orcs trying to burn down kelethin, and playing as good or evil, you can join that raid from either side. If crushbone wins, greater fay becomes a high level orc zone, and they attack felwithe next, then kaladim, etc.. T1/T2/T3 etc. Have this for Guk, and Blackburrow, and all the other starting cities enemies battling each other for control of the zone(s)... or something!

      I spoke on the video yesterday about how on the team PvP server, Vallon Zek, it was all about zone control. Early on in the server, before there where any lvl 50s, two groups from my team, the dark team, decided to raid Crushbone. We gated in with the help of two wizards, invised up and ran around the edge of the zone, to avoid notice. We then ran into Crushbone and went to work. We set up at the zone line and proceeded to kill any elf that zoned in. It did not take long for the call to arms went out. "Darkies in Crush!" As the reenforcements began to trickle in the combat heated up. I managed to kill an Enchanter and looted his ring. I then fought some others but being the lowest in our groups, I did not get another kill. The battle lasted about 15 or 20 minutes. I nearly killed a paladin, but by then they had numbers to help them and we all died. It was a glorious battle. We looted our corpses and left G Fay. It was a player rule, if you died in PvP, you loot then scoot. You where expected to leave the zone for about an hour. This was the rule for about the first 3 years of the server. It was this control of zones that kept everything fresh. There were some places that you could almost alway find a fight and people would sit and wait for them, every day.
      If EQ was slightly modified, it could be a rocking PvP conquest game.

    So I have a Lvl 53 Shm on Yeli. My 2nd month from eating Krono ended last week. I didn't re-up and as more days past, the less likely I am to return.
    Krono farmers have been a pain since Ragefire, and are the reason most of us stop playing before Luclin.
    Every TLP I've stayed on for longer than 2 months, I took a break during Kunark, came back towards the end if Velious (when krono farming has started to wither away) and enjoyed the game again from that point on.
    I could see 1 way to lesson the effect of krono farming which then lowers attrition rates would be to make krono not tradeable until say Luclin, just like they removed focus effects til then.

    Hey man that sucks about the Phinny farmers. I have to admit that, when I was trying to finish my mage epic at level 66 (it was actually becoming useless at that point, as the 66 pet is as good as, or better than the epic pet, but I still wanted to finish it) I bound myself down in the "Phinny pit" and had him on a timer until I finally got my epic piece, lol. Anyway, as I mentioned in another one of your videos, live servers now have instanced versions of old raid zones, so no more bottlenecks of farm groups locking down old raid targets. Agents of Change is what you want to Google. Are these not on the TLP servers also?

  • @brockkies8566

    I just started on Yelinak about a month ago. It's not my first TLP, but the first one I have really played hard. With the intention of maxing level and maybe an alt. I leveled my Wizard to 60 in about 3 weeks. Mostly grouping. This was a little more than a month before Luclin is supposed to launch. I didn't run into many problems. Probably because it isn't new anymore. I'm sure at the beginning things were worse. But these TLPs have instances as well. Which make it possible to get most of the targets you need without being pushed out by box farmers. Made a lot of friends, got into a guild full of great people. Having a blast. Haven't ran into many if any of the problems your talking about. You deal with all these problems when you decide you're going to race to the top of the pile. In that pile is the elite or the cheat. I don't have the time to devote to that kind of a thing. So starting late probably helped more than anything. Got my Wiz 60, halfway done with epic, started an Enchanter and he is level 30. I don’t know Ion. The way you describe, it just hasn’t been my experience as I’ve progressed past the Classic era. During the early stages of Mangler, I did not have any problems dealing with Krono farmers. Granted it still happened, but I was able to get six different 1.0s without running into these issues. Fast forward, we’re in Veil of Alaris right now, and I see no Krono farming at all and no mage box armies. They’ve also made keying easier during Luclin and PoP eras. So the competition for key mobs isn’t as bad as it used to be. They also have catch-up mechanics for people entering a TLP at a later expansion designed for those characters to gain experience at a faster rate. We’ve had players in my guild that have taken breaks from the game for several expansions only to come back, get to max level, and get many of their class specific AAs within a few weeks.

      Thank you for coming by & the comment. Yeah a lot of these farmers stick to the first 3 expansions. It's nice keying was made more convenient. That's where a lot of rude behavior happened back in the day.

    Rulesets are pretty crucial to how a TLP will survive or not. I feel like Oakwynd's ruleset and instancing stop a lot of the problems brought up here.
    Of course, Oakwynd's main issue now is that they had a plat dupe exploit three months ago that they patched out but didn't roll the server back, so the economy's been absolutely destroyed and everyone's waiting for the new TLP in a month or two.

  • @coachleif
    @coachleif 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Personally I really enjoy TLP launches... They aren't perfect, but for a short period you can relive the old days, grouping with people, meeting up with old guild mates, and exploring Norrath all over again... It doesn't stick around forever.... the experience devolves quickly, but for a short time every year, there really is a small piece of time that gives that original EQ feel, with EC full of traders, groups shouting, and meeting new people leveling up. It's pretty much worth it for the launch week experience, and if you meet some cool people maybe you stick around a little longer.
    I would also argue Krono is merely a scapegoat of an even larger symptom EQ always had anyways, which is just the competition for limited resources... P99 has a lot of rules in place to make things more friendly, but everyone I know in the raiding scene exhibits basically all the same behaviors here. It's more extreme with farmers, no doubt, there are more people doing it, no doubt, but the domination of open world spawns is an EQ problem, and has been since 1999. Fighting over spawns is the oldest argument in the EQ book, and Krono or not nothing would change it... same goes for RMT... those same people would just sell plat... as they did in original EQ

    I agree that the accelerated expansion release schedule is a significant reason I quit playing on TLPs, but krono is the biggest reason, and it's not even close. The sad part is that, if there were no krono, there would be no TLP servers. Krono is the sole reason for their existence. It's a revenue stream and nothing more. Think about it. DBG have no pressure to fix anything or develop new content. Content is predetermined by the expansions, bugs, balance issues and all. It's a cash cow for them, and we're just left to deal with whatever happens.

      ShowEQ and mapping stuff isn't a problem at all. All that does is show you information currently loaded into your game. ShowEQ does it through watching the information come across the network, the alternatives do it by reading it straight out of EQ memory. Keep in mind EQ devs are of the mind you can read memory all you want as long as you don't tamper with it in what few clear statements about their stance we have got. However it is dumb the client receive that much information about the zone, it should really just receive stuff within a specific radii and some static entities for emotes and events. Having used ShowEQ and MQMap off and on throughout the time I played EQ, it doesn't give you any edge at all, you still have to be able to act upon the info you got and most of the time you check a zone to see someone is already on the stuff you were thinking of going after.
      The real problem is that there are entire cheat communities built around abusing specific setups of plugins for MQ2 to do a lot of what we're seeing here. None of those plugins are hard to detect, don't even need tools really, just observation of the player. Very few, if any are used by more legitimate players that are just looking for QoL enhancements. If the EQ devs wanted to or were allowed to, they could utilize the MQ2 bindings themselves, the function signatures are very well known and that's all you really need to find a function loaded into your process. Track and/or take down whatever they choose to find against the games rules with as much granularity as they want.

    • @WhyYouAskingMe
      @WhyYouAskingMe ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eideticex I owned and admin'd a server for a game that was released in 2018 for about 6 months. That game to this day still suffers from what they call ESP which is the same thing ShowEQ does. Like you said, the server sends all the location data for the entire loaded area to the client. Instead of just sending what is in "line of sight" to the player.
      Prior to being a server owner I was a player of that game for about a year. After being a server owner and realizing how many people were cheating and how much it impacted gameplay and gave an unfair advantage. I shut down the server and quit the game.
      ShowEQ gives a massive advantage to people in Swamp of No Hope camping VP key ground spawns, camping AJ in Firiona Vie, and to any guild wanting a prayer at getting open world Trak. ShowEQ showing you other players locations can let you assess a pickzone and spawn / camp competition in minutes instead of relying on inaccurate camp checks or spending time going to see for yourself.
      Going to Swamp of No Hope and throwing an item on the ground and watching dozens of people immediately run to me was pretty eye opening.
      The player / guild not using ShowEQ is at a severe disadvantage in all of those situations.

    EQ has been in maintenance mode almost since the beginning. They were a one hit wonder, it made them millionaires overnight but it was mostly luck that got them there. Right from the start they were convinced that EQ would die soon, and they wanted to make sure they had a new game for people to move to. So all EQ's profits got spent on Star Wars Galaxies, Star Chamber: The Harbinger Saga, Lords of EverQuest, Zuma, Champions of Norrath, EverQuest II, Champions: Return to Arms, Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade, The Matrix Online, Field Commander, PoxNora , Cash Guns Chaos, Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, Legends of Norrath, God of War: Betrayal, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Free Realms, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, Fortune League, DC Universe Online, Magic: The Gathering - Tactics, Planetside1/2, Dragon's Prophet, Landmark / EQ Next, Z1 Battle Royale fknown as King of the Kill and H1Z1, Planetside Arena.
    All those pieces of shit, many many millions of dollars, could have turned EverQuest into the biggest game on the planet. All EQ's problems have solutions, most of the solutions were done by games as early as the 1980s because EQ was just like earlier text based games, just redone with graphics. They could have fixed EQ, and remade it with a modern engine but preserving what people loved about the original. Instead they did none of that, they just copy pasted a new batch of content over and over, at minimal cost and effort. Then all EQ's profit was spent on these other projects. And none of them took over from EQ, so SOE went out of business and now it's run by some Russian gangsters.

    Yeah the Krono farmer always ruin TLPs. I played on Thornblade when it came out and one guy hampered the entire serves progression by perma botting the cleric epic quest crown. If you have raided in the early days of a server then you know that the cleric epic is by far the most important epic to have on a raid. Raid wipes that would take over an hour to recover from are suddenly down to 15 minutes. The guy was reported over 25 times just from our guild alone and two people sent videos of it. Big surprise Daybreak did nothing! I got lucky and I guess he lost internet one night and was one of the first on the server to get my cleric epic. He was back the next day and our guild had enough of this guy. The guild sent three groups of mains down there to take the camp from him over like 3 hours. When he finally left they left a few people there to keep getting crowns for other cleric in the guild( think we got 2 or 3 for other cleric's in our guild). Then they stayed even longer to get more and give them to other guild's clerics just in protest of that botter. I don't even think he was selling them. Before I got mine I'd only seen one other cleric on the server with their epic. I think he was just griefing the server.

After about 2 - 6 months a lead GM bans all my purchased accounts.... Stating they know I purchased these accounts and they are perm-banned. IMO buying accounts impacts nobody in a negative way and gives Daybreak a nice cash influx from my 5 - 6 accounts that I am paying monthly fee's for, but they won't act on players abusing the game by perma-camping mobs or trading Krono from RMT... Makes no sense...

    Krono is the same as the WoW token, and blizzard is doing nothing to stop it either. Now I'm kinda worried about continuing playing, because I do want to go for my epic, but if sellers are strangleholding it, it feels hopeless to play. I don't think this is a problem Daybreak can solve. It's Pandora's box. They introduced krono because they saw how wildly successful PLEX were for CCP. WoW did the same thing. The issue is, CCP's game hinges on a Lord of the Flies type of mentality, which is the exact opposite of what classic EQ was built on (forced socialization and cooperation). This same behavior existed in EQ in 99/2000 as well, by the way. The difference was it wasn't nearly as organized or widespread (and epics didn't exist yet). I remember being in a guild that monopolized Lord/Frenzy for three days (nonstop) to get Yaks and sashes for all melee.

    I turn a blind eye to the krono farmers and toxic players because I realize I'll get that anywhere. Even P99 has toxic players and cheaters, With the exception of Krono farmers, But people still box and cheat yadayadayada. It's just not NEARLY as rampant on P99.
    I leveled a Necro to the mid 50s on Green and I had to solo most of it. Because "why would you group when you get faster XP soloing?" also "You're a Necro, Just go solo" My response was always "Because EQ is a community based game" It's about the friends and community.
    But also, I have a job, Kids, a life outside of EQ. The QoL of the TLPs is awesome for me. I love instanced raiding and every TLP I have the ability to try the content I never had before. It's awesome.
