    This is a nice, simple way to do it, however if you want to save power loss by using less gearboxes, you can have 8 different ratios and a reverse gear with just 4 boxes by giving each gearbox a different ratio and engaging them in a specific order (none, 1, 2, 3, 1&2, 1&3, 2&3, 1&2&3).

    • @redpug5042
      @redpug5042 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yup, that would be a 5:6 then 1:2 then 1:3 and reverse as the boxes, using the order you listed above (none, 1, 2, 3, 1&2, 1&3, 2&3, 1&2&3) The ratios range from 1:1 to 10:62

      @Anonenko I thought about this for a while too, and yeah I can't come up with a reason. Just lock the ratio between -1:1 and 3:1

    Trying to help people figure this game out is like talking a 10 year old through a college level math class. All he wants to do is play with cool trucks and doesn't know what the word "stoichiometry" means. 😳 oh and the math class has no actual teacher. And no text book. And the other students are actively sabbotaging them with wrong info.

    Interesting approach. Another way to do automatic transmission is through a speed sensor and threshold gates. It works like charm and downshifts automatically depending on speed. With a bit of logic you can also make it use a single gear when going in reverse so you don't end up going fast when backing.

      The basic idea is trading off speed for power, or the other way around. If your engine is extremely fast (for example if it has really high revs like an F1 car) but low powered, you could put it through a gearbox to trade off some of that speed for enough power to move a whole vehicle. Or you can go the other way.

    • @lfox02
      @lfox02 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Watch Engineering Explained ;)
      Gears are basically levers. Imagine you're trying to push a door closed. You typically do so by pushing furthest from the hinge. This is because the force you can apply is most effective and the distance you have to move your arm (or yourself) is not a problem. If you push closer to the hinges, you'll have to move your arm a lesser distance but it'll require a stronger push.
      We need gears because engines don't make the same torque and power (which is a function of torque and RPM) across the whole rev range. By spinning the engine's internals faster, you get more power (to a point). But we have an issue. In land vehicles, we need to spin the wheels at a very wide array of speeds. If we connect the engine to the wheels in such a way that idle (at which point the engine can keep itself running) and redline (the point beyond which we don't make more power, so it's more or less pointless to rev more, or we damage the engine) correspond to our entire needed speed range (so from stopped and very low traffic and parking speeds to highway speeds and beyond), the engine probably isn't going to be strong enough to even get us going.
      Thus, we use a pair of gears. One is spun by the engine and the other goes to the wheels. Say that the input gear is twice as big as the output gear. This means that the wheels (basically) will spin at half the speed as that of the engine, but with twice the force, twice the strength. We use this strength to climb hills, to accelerate and overtake, to carry our heavy shopping, etc.
      Since the difference in sizes means the input gear spins 2 times as fast as the output gear, we call this a 2:1 gear ratio. We call these gears shorter.
      So now our engine is actually usable. Hooray! Problem. We're going to run out of revs if we want to go any faster. So what do we do? Well, our engine is probably strong enough that, once we've overcome friction and have gotten going, we don't need all that strength. So now the output gear is going to be the same size or bigger than the input gear.
      Going with the same ratio from earlier, if for every 1 turn of the engine's gear we get 2 turns to the wheels, we call that a 1:2 gear ratio. You might've heard the term "overdrive". This is simply when you have an output that spins faster than the input. These are called taller gears.
      Apart from usability, this has another very important function. Engines tend to be at their most efficient when at a certain RPM, which tends to be pretty low. So if you want to go a longer distance more efficiently, you use taller gears that'll have you at lower engine RPM at your cruising speed. This is why you see cars today come with 7, 8, and up to 10 gears, with some (like semi trucks) having even 12.

    So I gave up trying to make my own, it just wouldn't work no matter what I tried to remedy it and it kept stressing me out to a breakdown. So instead I looked up your modpage and downloaded your modular engine controller and automatic transmission. Upon getting them all wired up the truck insists as soon as the engine turns on to immediately start driving backwards. While both controllers seem to work together, both of them ask for a clutch (my truck only has one). The automatic transmission also asks for an up/down in composite for some reason? I tried hooking it up but I can't seem to figure out how. I just want to make a car with more than 1 gear.

  • @danserig275
    @danserig275 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should add 1 to all the forward gears.
    1st gear should be the gear set in the default position.
    Then when you activate "gear 1" you'd actually activate 2nd. that allows 1st gear to be low and basically gives you 7 gears with 6 boxes.

  • @EdFrankes

    Your tutorials are very helpfull and got me to fix all kinds of problems in Stormworks. But i have to say, i find the modular engines pretty underwhelming.
    I was so looking forward to the update, build a ship for it, more or less. Build a large 8 cilinder turbo-diesel and it doesn't work. I've tried all kind of configs just to find out that it needs loads more air and exhaust. And yes, i am using your ECU wich works pretty good.
    So no, you can not build any engine you want. It's pretty limited what you can do, really. Wich makes the modular engines not very realisitc to build and make work.
    Just wanted to say that, nothing you can do about it.

    So I'm having that problem upon start up where the rps is so low that it tries to always keep the clutch off by closing the air throttle, which means my engine can't start. I've tried my own remedy with this as you suggested since you don't show how to do it in the video. The problem is it doesn't work, and I can't figure out how else to do it so that it would work. Could someone tell me how, or if there's a workshop link to this gearbox with that mechanism, just send it to me. Or if this is possibly because I use ZE's microcontroller for the engine instead of yours. I'm also unsure why the truck in the video didn't have this problem, maybe it just turns over easier.

    In theory, floating point operations can be imprecise. I couldn't tell you whether simple incrementation and decrementation of small integers exhibits that problem, but you usually want to treat the range [X, X+0.5) as equal to X. Might be a good habit to get into, so that if you make operations more complicated later, it doesn't become a problem.

      @@pfistor how to control the rps? I always got 60rps on 1:2 fuel/air ratio

    • @pfistor
      @pfistor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Hawilldan You need micro controller to take in the throttle value and apply a Proportional controller to that and output the result to the throttles.
      Throttle 0-1 > multiply that by the total engine rps so 60 then put that into the PID set point. Take in the engine RPS and put that into the PID Target Variable. Then output the PID into the engine throttles. Set P=0.05 I=0 D=0 . A proportional integral derivative controller reads an input (the target variable) and uses math to try to achieve the target goal. So from that point when you set the throttle to half 0.5 the MC(micro controller) multiplies that by 60 to get 30 and the PID says oh you want 30 RPS the engine is at say 10 so it starts bumping up the value that it is adding to the throttle by 0.05 every tick (1/60th of a second) up and up until it gets close to 30 if it goes too high it'll dial it back down. Bit much to explain over YT comments. If you still don't understand download a modular engine controller on Steam workshop.

    How do you have any idea how many gearboxes to place??? Everyone is like depends on your build.
    Soo how do I go about figuring out how many I need? And how many which way?

    • @BizlaC
      @BizlaC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Start with 2, which would give you 3 gears. Take it for a spin, if you are hitting you rev limiter in 3rd, then add another gearbox, keep doing this until you have enough.
      As for direction, it does depend haha. On my HGV I have the first gearbox facing away from the engine to give me lots of torque to get moving, then the rest face towards the engine to give me lots of speed.

    In my build, I have a AWD 5 speed car with a small engine, at 30 RPS. It stalls at gear 5. Any ideas how to stop it from stalling?

    • @BizlaC
      @BizlaC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      30rps is way too high, the peak power-efficiency of the small engines is around 10rps. Try limiting your engine RPS to 15, then using the threshold gates to gear up at 12 and down at 8 constantly keeping it within the "powerband". You will need to adjust your gear ratios after doing this, I like to have my first gearbox converting engine power to torque (arrows away from engine), then all gearboxes after that are converting torque to speed (arrows to engine). And I'm using 4 gearbox to give me 5 forward gears (a 3.1 on the first gearbox disengaged, a 9.5 when engaged for my first 2 gears) then the gears that follow are usually around 3.2, trailing off to a 6.5 for the final gear, that way the finial gear doesn't lose too much torque. Let me know if this helps you.
