    Before I watched this vid I spent a day myself figuring out a gearbox system on my own for auto transmission. Came out with a messy working setup that allows me to automate clutch (like a real car) so the clutch can go in/out quickly between each change. It also has neutral input. And timers to let the transmission steps stabilize before it allows a new change along bypasses (to avoid it getting stuck between two different levels constantly shifting like a blinker like in your video before throttling up)
    Also had properties inputs (which would be useful for people to know here) so you can input your wanted RPM values without going inside the circuit and just click the microcontroller in the usual editor... So I can input the speed of the clutching between each gearshift (0 makes the clutch always stay on even during gear change) and other needed values that might vary between different engine systems and vehicles... Anyhow thx for the video you made explaining gearboxes. Had more fun with the game from there on.

    Great video! I just have a bit of advice for you to consider: take it slow with these tutorials. You're going SO fast when you're explaining what you're doing and you're leaving anyone trying to follow you in-game forced to constantly rewind at least 10 seconds back because you're rushing so much.

    you can just tie the starter to the W/S. if W/S does not equal zero and rps is under 1 then power the starter. you can then use the same micro to start and disable clutch when battery is low.

    Is it possible to make a gauss cannon in stormworks?
    - In real life it is pretty much a row of magnets in the wall of a tube (a rail could hold the projectile too) but when the projectile (a pole of normal blocks should work) has passed a magnet the magnet will shut down so it will not slow down the projectile
    Is this possible?
    If yes: could you make a video about it?
    I am asking because there is "no" way to make any valid weapons (I dont count Torpedos because they are not very effective) in Stormworks but this kinetic weapon should be able to make some good damage even on flying vehicles

    I'm having a bit of trouble. Instead of idling, my engine will race when I reduce throttle to 0. I've checked my settings, and they are all the same as yours, minus some slight tweaking for my gearboxes.

    • @syeds5941
      @syeds5941 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He made it so that the clutch will equal 0 when your throttle is below 0.20. So even if youre going 40 mph and drop the throttle to 0, the clutch will also do the same.
      A simple way is to add an AND block that receives two thresholds (that you desire) from the RPS and the throttle, then connect it to the Down to the Up Down Logic

  • @MelficeSilesius
    @MelficeSilesius 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is there a way to make it smoother? Because it seems like it's very twitchy if your RPS happens to be in between ideal (for a lack of a better word...) RPS values. Feels like it wouldn't be great for the clutch mechanic in real life. I'm sure there's no wear and tear on components in Stormworks, but if we can do without having to replace parts every other trip out on sea...

    • @2Steps
      @2Steps 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know it's been a few days so maybe you've found the answer already, but in case: The gearbox always reduces gears in the direction of the arrows, so to get more revs from the prop you just install the gearbox backwards, so the arrow faces the engine.

      @@luckyizzac This isn't correct within the scope of this game. I appreciate that in a car IRL you "let the clutch up" to get rolling, but here, the tutorial is correct, in that if the clutch is letting power through the driveshaft when there are no revs, and not letting it through when you rev up, you're going to be going nowhere.

    Thx for tutorial - I'm trying to wrap my had around this for at least a week now with a slightly different setup. My issue however is that the engines will always run on full throttle. It's the clamp value in the kill switch thats causing the issue and it's not so much of a deal whe clutch is engaged (if in water) or if any resistance is put on. But that kinda defeats the prupose especially for having engines run in an idle mode. Any tips on how to solve that ? For example if throttle input is corresponding to engine rps - let's say 0-20, idle mode should be up to 2.9 rps and at 3 the clutch kicks in.. with the setup above engines will always try to reach those 20 rps. Thx, stay healthy.

      It’s very easy.
      Connect the engine RPS input to your engine’s RPS output, connect Throttle input to your throttle lever’s output, and connect the kill switch to a push button.
      Next connect the engine throttle output to your engine throttle input, connect the clutch output to your clutch and connect the gearbox 1 and 2 outputs to your respective 2 gearboxes.
      Set up those gearboxes just like you did when you were switching gears manually.
      Then just press your normal engine starter button and watch it switch your gears (relatively) smoothly and efficiently!
      PS. Yes, only one clutch for the pair of gearboxes.

    • @robmuzz
      @robmuzz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joelmulderThank you Joel. I know how to connect up the microcontraoller. So, if there's one clutch, do you just connect both gearboxes in serial? or do you split the clutch with a T junction and add the gearboxes in parallel?

    • @joelmulder
      @joelmulder 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob Murray If there’s one clutch, you link the clutch output to the input of set clutch.
      If you’re talking about the piping, then you indeed just hook them up in serial.
      Hooking them up in parallel will probably also still work, but the effect will be lessened. When hooked up in parallel, you won’t be “amplifying” the previous gears. (That is if hooking them up in parallel even works properly, i haven’t tried.)
      The way i usually have my gearboxes is that i get the first one’s first value set to 1:1, and have the second value set to whatever works for the setup (takes some trail and error to find it, but it often ends up being 1:3 if you’ve got plenty of spare power).
      The second gearbox, which i link straight into the first one usually has a first value that is the highest i can set it before my performance decreases when accelerating, and again the second gear set to whatever’s appropriate.
      I’m sure there’s a better way to determine this, but it’s alluded me so far, so trail and error it will be.
      Note that the gearbox’s directions are both pointed into the engine to achieve more speed. Point them away for more torque.

      Josip Ozimec it’s incredibly easy.
      Then just press your normal engine starter button and watch it switch your gears smoothly and efficiently!

    I like your tutorials and I've learned a lot, but you're explaining stuff really fast and I can't keep up.
    Also, you keep using the word "obviously". I assume what you're doing is obvious to you. To me, however, as someone who doesn't understand everything yet, it is not obvious. All it does it makes me feel really stupid for not understanding.

    How do I add a reverse gear to this?

    • @MrNJersey
      @MrNJersey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You would need invert the throttle once is goes into negative and then a reverse gearbox. Will add reverse to mine and upload the controller
