this is very helpful. the tip about wax alone is gold. but also cleanup with same or smaller bit and note texture so it doesn't vary throughout the piece unintentionally. great tips nobody else gives. i am doing chemotherapy and have a lot of downtime where intense fine detail work with my hands would be a wonderful distraction. i ordered a grinding tool and stand and portable desktop bench with vice and dog holes, jewelers anvil and some small chasing and peening hammers. going to turn some of our household items into family heirlooms/folk art, as well as form, flame paint, engrave and mount copper oak and maple leaves. none of it will be great art. but it will enrich my surroundings and create some pieces with sentimental value to my family.
I am truly grateful for your support. I can only wish you all the very best in your engraving journey but please feel free to stop by and ask any questions if needed! I wish you all the best with your health. Enriching your surroundings is the best thing you can do for your state of mind and for family to cherish.
@@MachinaDesigns amen! sweet of you to say, thank you. please dont worry prognosis is great, chemo and radiation a precaution. but thank Gd, and Gd bless you friend fir sharing your knowledge of how to add beauty to the world.
Thank you for this! I'm a retired welder and I did very tight tolerances. I'm very good with a pencil grinder and im going to get myself a dremel and do some artistic work!
Very cool. I had no idea that this was still a thing. Back when I was doing it in the late 80s and early 90s there were relatively few people engraving art this way. Most of my work appears on black granite headstones in cemeteries. Rotary engravers were too expensive back then so I started with a $5 ordinary engraver (similar to the one at 35:40 but much cheaper). Nowadays the rotary engravers are much more affordable, but each still has its use. You can use the other engraver exactly as you would the rotary style. The primary difference is that it doesn't engrave to the same depths or with the same speed. Still, I've created elaborate pieces with it. This video just happened to pop up in my feed even though I wasn't searching for anything to do with engraving. I've not checked your channel yet to see what else you've produced, but I bet your audience would find a video about painting engravings to be interesting. You may have already made one. Painting really brought the engravings to the next level. Some of mine are still out there, full color, 30+ years later. A little faded from the outdoor environment, but they've held up better than expected. Great vid. Nice to see the enthusiasm for the art form in the comments below.
Brilliant video . Thanks ever so much mate . Got myself all the gear and a few aluminium sheets to practice on before moving on to my sportster deby cover and top engine . now its just a matter of time and practice . Nice one

Would you be interested in creating a tutorial on how you convert images to your traceable format? Maybe discuss a bit about what parts of your stencil you'll be removing and what you're looking for when deciding if an image would be a good fit for creating a stencil? Thanks very much! Loving the videos!
A general tutorial would be awesome. Incredible work. Gonna have to look more into this. There a brand of bits you’d recommend to start with? Thanks!! Hector F. López, Jr. Katy, Texas
A good starting point is any Dremel carbide cutting burrs. Get several sizes of the ballpoints and practice some linework. Work on keeping your hand steady and controlling texture.
These have been some of the most informative and inspirational videos on the engraving. It's really gotten a hold of me and I'm going to be starting on it. How do you charge and how are you getting the colors so vividly different? I'm truly passionate about motorcycles and that's the direction I'd love to go in time, but not limiting to.
Thank you buddy appreciate the feedback. I’ve uploaded several videos discussing those points so have a flick through the videos and all the info should be there

Very well done for anyone want to even give this a try. WELL SAID& a awesome learning/ instruction video. Keep up the awesome work & more videos please!
It’s a mixture of things from a sharp burr to a cleaned piece. I’ve never polished any of my aluminium engravings. Keep the burr lubed up that helps a lot
Hey man! Love the vids.. always watch a bunch of times.. trying to get into it but having a tough time finding some pieces like you are using.. any idea where I could purchase some? I am from Canada and not sure how to find what you are using.. any help would be appreciated.. stores and what thickness and what not.. that would be sweet! Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks Jared I appreciate it. I get my aluminium sheets from local metal suppliers. They come anodised already so no need to mess around with paint. 1.2mm to 1.5mm is perfect anything thicker and you’re wasting your money. All the very best
I know here in the US we have a place called Metal Supermarket. Great place for finding materials. If you can think or if you've never heard of it. They may have or can get it. Also it's individually owner
You can simply buy the Derby covers that have been painted black already. You can technically spray your cover yourself but you gotta make sure you do a thorough painting process or it will just chip and peel

@@MachinaDesigns I've been practicing on steel plates like craft signs. They are cheap and easy to find so I figured I'll start there. The thing is if I leave the outside they will have a rusty look over time.
If it’s steel definitely clear coat the work to stop rust if aluminium not necessarily as it doesn’t rust but does oxidise so May be worth doing too if exposed to the elements.
Great video, i have just got a cheap wireles rotary tool with all the accessories but it just jumps about and its very hard to control, would that be as the RPM being to low? Im going to get a second hand demel 3000 i think as that seems the best bet with the hand attachment like you're using, i had no idea you had to use wax and didnt think about it hewting up and wearing the. Down. I have so much to learn. I just want to customise old ipod back cases, the metal ones. As i buy and repair them etc. i want to do engrave different music artists logos or names. The lubing part ive never seen people mention before so thanks and nice work. Oh snd also i never even thought about eye protrction too. Stupid.me.
The flexshaft makes it a whole lot more manageable and easier to control. The wax helps the cut remain clean and looking sharp. Eye protection is a must! Just keep at it and you’ll soon find your rhythm. Good luck

Thank you for the positive feedback and you are very welcome
The lube fir the burr is applied while the bur is spinning? Is that better than applying befor the bur is spinning? What's the advantage? Thank you.
Yes as it gets into all the cutting blades and covers the whole burr point
My first time following you, that's great work, could you pass a gold marker so it would stand out more?
Thank you. Yeah any metallic paint markers would work. You would probably need to do a few passes to make it stand out
What is the advantage when doing lines of pushing away from you instead of pulling towards you?
Because you’re not fighting the rotational force of the machine by going away from yourself and it cuts way smoother and you’re in more control
Are you using any rubber sanding bits to polish and give that shine to your pieces or are you only overlapping your lines tightly together?
It’s a mixture of things from a sharp burr to a cleaned piece. I’ve never polished any of my aluminium engravings. Keep the burr lubed up that helps a lot
@@MachinaDesigns much appreciated!

How do I fill in the Dremel lines with a different color like black?
You can use enamel paints such as pinstriping paint
Is that black coating something you can apply yourself or should you buy it like that? Would a coat of spray paint work?
You can simply buy the Derby covers that have been painted black already. You can technically spray your cover yourself but you gotta make sure you do a thorough painting process or it will just chip and peel

@@MachinaDesigns i found it that way thank you! seems few people use it over here for engraving or at least its the uncommon use. i excited to try it my engraver wont arrive until next week sadly. i m raring.
What do you use for it to not rust?
Aluminium doesn’t rust. However to keep the fresh look of the engraving over any metal surface get the engraving clear coated.
Hi, quick question how do or how would you recommend painting the engraving?
Use pinstriping paint and a lot of patience
So will it work with stainless steel as well like a tumbler?
Yip
What is the name of that tools you use in straight line
Flexshaft
tnk you

Great info. How is engraving on chrome bumper done?
You shouldn’t really engrave chrome as it chips and flakes off. Engrave the metal first then have the bumper chromed
You need to get white transfer paper its like tattoo paper i use it on headstones . clear coat . Etc..
I do that already
any advice for polished black granite?
Lots of water and your diamond cutting burrs and wheels

Aluminium

Hi there, likewise
Yes lots of control and don’t let the burr run away from you. Lower your speed to find your control point then work up from there
I am an absolute newbie at this and was wondering what your using to lubricate the dremel bits? Wax or Grease?
It’s wax buddy
What kind of silicone did you use for your grip on your flexshaft grip?
Didn’t use silicone it’s carved from high density foam
So, since I'm left-handed, I would normally be pulling the tool towards me? That actually seems more natural.
Do whatever is comfortable and works for you
