Video about how I took on the restoration of an antique bench that is over 100 years old! Over many years of use, the bench has become very worn out. It is unknown how many times this bench was painted - there was practically no normal, usable wood left in it. It would be easier and cheaper to throw out this bench than to restore it. I took on the restoration because there are still people who know the history of this bench. After many hours of good work the result was good.
Enjoy watching everyone! - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
I dont really understand why you made this restoration when in the end nothing you see suggests it’s a 100 years old. Al of that wood you coverd up. When you might as well made a new one. it would look the same. Without all this extra effort.
Which don’t get me wrong looks great!
I didn’t leave the old wood for two reasons. The first is a badly worn seat. It cannot be left as it was. And to re-glue and cover only the seat, but leave the legs as they were, was strange and ugly, I think. The second reason is my personal dislike for very worn things that are in terrible condition. For me they symbolize decline, degradation and decay. And in its current condition, this bench is pleasant to pick up and use. In any case, thank you for your thoughts!
From primitive to pristine! My grandfather made dressers and chairs for us, tons of toys and figurines. He has a collection of planes (I think that what they are called), I can remember in his hobby shop I would play with the shavings. He had a table much like yours that displayed his work. He didnt have any fancy machines/tools. He preferred to work with his hands. I thank you for the wonderful memories your vid brought to me. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Till the next vid
I'm very glad to call you the warm memories. There are tons of woodworker which use tons of machineries for producing, and a few who are oldschool masters of hand tools. Now we stiil believe of master inserts some part of his soul into a product during working with hand tools. So acording this your grandfather is still at your during you kepp his products.
Great job looks 100% better
Thank you!
Excellent ❤
Даже лучше!❤
Fantástico video donde se muestra como NO restaurar un banco de 100 años de antigüedad, y en su lugar construir uno de IKEA.
Very good! I invite you to give this video a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel.
Amazing!
I subscribed and gave you thumbs up even though you ruined a 100 year old beautiful bench; I see you have talent and will keep following your videos. lets hope you will tend to preserve more rather than modernize in future. p.s. don't be shy to use power tools; no shame in that and the new bench is beautiful no doubt.
Thank you for your subscribenition and thumbs! As for "ruined" bench there was no ways to make it better condition than it is now. We have to take a fire, but no an ash from the past.
There is a problem. This bench had only the value of being an artifact of memory. Meanwhile, you have changed it so much that almost nothing remains of the old bench. You've created a new bench, but what is it for?
If the old bench was too flimsy, you could use clear epoxy, or you could use rebar.
Your work skills are fine.
Quite the opposite. The updated look of this bench is much more pleasing to its owner than the previous piece of firewood. Using tons of epoxy resin will not solve the issue of radically changing the appearance of the bench.
Removing ALL of the nails - rather than hiding them - would not have been too hard.
Tightening up the joints after carefully separating them then gluing & clamping then - without nails etc. Would have helped retain the character of the piece.
Also if only the very loose/flakey paint had been removed so as to leave some of the original paint - then sealing it - would have had a great patina effect & it would have retained its age & beauty.
Now the stool looks like something from the supermarket!
Removing ALL of the nails? What are talking about? You'll never remove the nails from legs without totally destroying of wood.
A "beauty" of old bench is a just a talking. No one want to prefer an piece of old trash.
@@VovichGP in my experience I’ve been able to get all viable nails out neatly.
Cutting the top off, then “hiding” the shaft etc. & re assembling a piece could make it an expensive surprise for someone using tools or blades in the future if they are trimming or cutting the wood where the hidden nail shafts are!
@@peterholmesgavleman No use explaining. A restorer who hates the old and dilapidated is an oxymoron. I hope he doesn't work in a museum 🙂
Its a pity for this beautyful old thing
There was no any beautyful thing, but old ditched.
Awful cover up on beautiful old wood and a great character in the little bench. Sorry.
Many people, many tastes... Don't sorry))
that is not a restoration it's a cover up of a 100 year old vintage bench
Returning a thing to working condition is also a restoration
but you did not return it to working condition you totaly coverd it up .im not saying your work was poor it's just not a restoration
A working condition is a state when a thing (bench) can does its function. Before a restoration this bench already could not do it.
You have certainly shown your skills in your work but I cannot call this a restoration. It is rather a rebuild.
Everyone is entitled to their preference but I myself would have rather seen the original rustic stool preserved as much as possible.
But if you change the title to rebuild the finished product looked good.
If this was my grandfather's bench I would have been very heart sore.
If you picked up that original bench and then mine after the restoration, you would never want to go back to the original one. Your heart would glow with happiness that your grandfather’s bench turned from a piece of garbage into a brand new thing.
Sorry to be negative, but this restoration removed the bench's history and character. Nevertheless, the bench looks awesome and will last another century (at least).
No need to apologize) No one wanted to have garbage “antiques”.
The work you've carried out (blunt butchering really) has nothing whatsoever to do with restoration therefore the title of this vid is an oxymoron to be precise.
If you called it a remake, remodel or recreate those would've been fair.
There are quite a number of ways and accepted techniques of restoring and/or preserving an old piece, however what you've done to this sad old thing is definitely not of them.
I truly wonder what your client/s thought of it and how they reacted when they were presented with this Frankensteinesque nail-stapled, lintel and lamella covered monstrosity?
You can write whatever you think is true (within the limits of decency, of course), but one of my friends (Cambridge dictionary) interprets the term “restoration” as follows: the act or process of returning something to its earlier good condition or position, or to its owner. The key words here are -- earlier good condition. Restoration is not only the restoration of the original appearance (which is important for paintings, monuments, etc.), but also the restoration of the original practical use. And believe me, it was no longer possible to extract anything useful from that old old piece of garbage without radically strengthening it and thereby changing it to an acceptable working condition.
As for my clients' reaction to this "Frankensteinesque", no one really believed that it was possible to turn that old piece of junk (fit only for the stove or the trash heap) into such a beautiful masterpiece of carpentry until they personally watched my video. So don’t teach grandpa to cough, I know what I’m talking about))))
I appreciate the craftmanship but you left nothing of the original character of the bench. Might as well make a new one.
Péssimo, descaracterizou por completo. Não é restauração.
너무 비효율적이며
쓸데없는 작업이 많음
Why call it a restauration?
According a prophecy
Where is the hundred year old bench?
And you guess where...
I'm sorry ..not sorry.. Why didn't you just build a new bench? To me personally this was not a restoration, it was a coverup .
Sorry but have you ever heard the comment "Triggers Broom" you may as well built a new one as this is not a restoration as it bears no resemblance to the original.
And once again I will also remind you that restoration is not only a return to its original appearance (and you can’t return a piece of garbage to its original state), but also a return to a working condition.
You should have build a new one a waist of time 😢😢
Already done. Watch my similar video about making a bench.
Re-engineered not restored. You destroyed everything special about this heirloom
Restoration is restoration. There's nothing wrong with turning old junk into beautiful things.
What a waste !
Oh, don't bother about it!
Why cut the size down? You've completely changed the look of the bench. I would called you a woodworker not a furniture restorer. You should have just taken that piece of firewood and made a whole new stool. Shame on you!
Hah! It's funny, heah. Apparently you have little understanding of restoration of old things. Please turn on the subtitles for the video, everything is described there in some detail.
vraiment nul ce n'est pas de la restauration.
No way, it can't be!
I got bored with this
