Yeonmi, could you tell us something about your experience of learning English language? And could you compare languages in DPRK (maybe South K too) and English? Is Korean language easy to learn compared to English?
More people should hear about your experiences. Many people don't know, and don't try to know, what's going on in North Korea. You are both amazing women! Thanks for sharing your experiences about life in North Korea as well as your shocks moving to the US. It makes me thankful for the simple freedoms we get to have.
I agree with your comment in general.. but as an average American.. (I realize average is in eye if beholder) but I feel so overwhelmed by stuff in my own life.. our own politics. Leaving Afganistan is so terrible of our government.. we got pulled into that country because of cries for help.. but the people never appreciated us and now we've abandoned so many to death.... So it's hard to justify anymore Americans dying for lost causes and betrayal by those we try to help and betrayal by our own government by our own government.
US Nuclear warheads: 7000 N. Korea Nuclear warheads: 25 US Military Bases Abroad: 800 N. Moreover, century-old bullied practices of Capitalist Imperialist Western Sanctions over other nations throughout the whole wide world, (including in N. @C Reinicke Thanks for your reply, I agree with you as well. The US is far from perfect and I'm not trying to preach that. Just that at a minimum we have the ability to make our own decisions including criticizing our government, basic human rights. What's happening in Afghanistan is heartbreaking and it didn't need to be this way. Although I think it's important to know the truths of what's going on in the world, individual responsibility is the best thing we can focus on. It's the only thing we can fully control. Focusing on every problem in the world is entirely too overwhelming since we cannot fix it ourselves, but we can wake up and make good decisions everyday to do our part.
This is one of the most genuinely wholesome content you can find... So much hard work and heart it takes to have accomplished such a feat is mind-blowing! Were glad to have you here telling your story of sheer will and heart.
I’m so sorry this happened to you. Remember, stay strong and never lose hope! You’re really a role model to people these days. You’re one of the strongest people I’ve ever heard about. More people should hear about your experiences. ♡︎
This whole story is so amazingly similar to Cuba, students working in the fields, the worthless currency and how the government is always changing it, even the students uniforms are almost the same lol. I am impressed that someone in North Korea actually had a play station. I was the daughter of engineers and never had access to a gaming machine growing up. Incredible! When my dad left Cuba to Brazil many years ago, he would tell people there stories of Cuba and many would not believe him, it sounded too crazy to be true. Love what you ladies do, the world needs to hear the horrors of NK. God bless you all!
You’re channel is so important! You are spreading so much awareness that most do not know about or speak on this topic. God Bless you both and the people in North Korea 🙏🏼
Really "fell in love with you again" while listening to your conversation with Joe Rogan: so brave, as he said, and quite independent-minded! My wife in her nighttime dreams was often transported back into the civil war in N. Sri Lanka. My heart has always been heavy for all our fellow experiencers in N. Korea since I first learned the truth over 25 years ago. So the art to learn was to stay bright&light, relaxed, cool head and make real plans that count for people on the ground. ie What is the best way to awaken conscience in China? Let's make this change, even if takes 20 years - Chinese leaders and all Koreans are human too, and mindsets change (tho lack of universal empathy makes it feel so slow!) 🌦️🌱
It's so extremly interesting putting both different points of view in one video - you have been raised in the village in poor family and your guest has been raised in a "privileged" one (if you can actually use this word meaning the KRLD standards...) thank you for sharing, you're both brave and beautiful women, I hope you will be always safe and happy!
Hi Yeonmi I hope you are doing well I'm From Algeria 🇩🇿 and I've Read your Book I've learned a lot from it about daily life in North Korea I recommend it to everyone that haven't read it yet I wish you More success in your Life
I love seeing these collaborations between North Korean defectors. It's good to hear all the different things each person went through before they escaped.
Good vid, I love listening about the hardships you guys faced in North Korea; it makes me more aware of how much I should be grateful for. Thanks Yeonmi. Also, you guys should do more videos together!
When Americans complain about this country, just knowing what’s happening in North Korea should be a requirement and reality check to all. Our supermarkets are filled with countless choices, we have freedom to own property, can lead our lives in the way we choose, speak and criticize whatever we want. We have laws, rights, and most importantly freedom. Every single person should hear these North Korean stories. Your book, Yeonmi should be required reading in every American school! My 13-year-old daughter is reading it now, and she can’t even believe that people exist and are treated like this. It’s horrific. I heard you on Joe Rogan and Lex Friedman. Keep going!
Just because there is bigger suffering, it doesn't mean one should not also adress domestic problems... Because no country is perfect, there is always room for improvement... of course one shouldn't be nitpicking about every detail, but even in rich countries there are severe underlying issues that need to change, especially regarding infrastructure or digitalisation of rural areas.
Which story did you fall in love with? Do some research might find out her story has changed multiple times about what's happened to her what happened. She's becoming a propaganda tool and that's it. Some liberal groups hired an HR firm to help coach her on what to say.
As a defector (not from North Korea) from a country of dictatorship (not gonna reveal what country that is), I’m so grateful and so proud of myself for what I have now: I have a pretty decent life in Florida. And of course I got here much much more easily than you did and I cannot imagine how difficult that is for a North Korean to escape. I wish more people could read your stories because I’m tired of hearing people, some American-born Americans (mostly youngsters) complaining about how terrible their lives are in America, and every time I hear them complaining, I feel bad for them cuz they’ve never lived in a country where freedom is nonexistent. Sadly, they just take it for granted, so your voice needs to be heard! Best wishes to ya!
I hadn't noticed until you mentioned. Someone else commented that their culture considers it impolite to let anyone see inside their mouth. Like covering for a sneeze?
*Making up fake narratives* She does know nothing . Everything she says either are made up, or she gets from somewhere else. She mostly reads, copies and collects these "news", rumours, fabrications and lies from internet, US backed Radio Free Asia,Daily Mail and South Korean conservative/anti-N. Korean newspapers (Dong-A Ilbo,Chosun Ilbo, Donga Ilbo, Munhwa Ilbo and Segye Ilbo South). All of these have been criticized for spreading false news and rumours with no evidence. They've been proven wrong countless times before and have never apologized. And then she, with a large portion of additional hoaxes, integrates them into her own fake stories & narratives! She pretends & presents these rumours and fabrications as facts , and as if they are info. about factual events passing to her from her own connections.
She steals or copies/ "appropriating elements from others' escape stories" !! Even her book reads almost identical to Hyeonseo Lee's book! She had some major inconsistencies in her tellings and some things she said were just completely illogical and then I realized that she just copied it out of Geroge Orwells 1984 and animal farm or the movie Red Sparrow. *It's not an authentic biography. The whole “fish out of water” culture shock aspect is absolutely fascinating. Things we don’t even think about, banks, lawyers, puberty, are all alien concepts to those behind Kim’s electric fence. Thanks for sharing this with us.
"...but some people are more equal than others" is literally one of the best quotes from Animal Farm, one of my favorite books. I love that you just pulled that out Yeonmi! You have to be one of the greatest intellectuals to come from N.K. On the George Orwell topic, I never actually made it through 1984 because it was kind of like reading a book about daily life, especially with CCTV in the UK, which I found very boring. Unfortunately I was not born early enough to see the predictive nature of the novel as it had already become the world🤷♂
Thanks for sharing what life is like growing up and what daily life is like in North Korea. Most people don't know. I think it great that this topic is the most requested. It shows people do care and want to know what everyday life is like. You two were both great! Hopefully people will now understand just how good they have freedom!
Why anybody would give your video a thumbs down it's beyond me I guess a lot of people do not understand the fact that there is many people in this world that do not have freedoms not only in North Korea but in many parts of the world people need to wake up and educate themselves stop telling themselves it doesn't concern me because it's not in our country if it can happen to them it can happen to us we are all human beings and it affects everyone thank you for educating everyone thank you for being strong God bless stay safe bye
I am barely 5'0 tall. Never in my life would I think that was average or tall. How a country treat its children says the most about it. Their children are their future adults.
"We had A computer at my school" "Oh, my GOD..." So glad you both escaped. I pray the country can be released from the bondage of slavery and criminal tyranny. You are a credit to your families.
Thank you so much for this video, it is so interesting, Yesterday I was rewatching your daily life videos thinking how instructive would be to have more, sooo thanks a lot 💜
Yeonmi & Cherie☺️ Such a JOY the two of you. Strong, Intelligent, Soulful & CUTE😉 Thank You Ladies for being HERE on Earth!! Keep speaking The Reality of oppression and true evil that is holding back North Korean Spirits. Always a lesson & pleasure😊. Blessings & Stay Safe🤗🌺
i feel the same about the US/NATO (60% of whole world's military budget, if you count the other 'allies' outside NATO like Japan, Saudi Arabia, Israel so on it is almost 75%). They bomb wherever they want, and the whole world may only watch how they keep bombing children.
Thank you for sharing your story with us. There are many North Koreans that are unable to have a voice and you do them justice by sharing your experiences to the world. It's very difficult to understand why the regime would treat its people so poorly if they want the country to be successful and thrive. It's like they don't care about the people, only the elite top ranked members of society. The fact that its a luxury just to have fish or meat with your rice everyday is crazy because anything less is considered malnourishment. As frustrating as it is here in the US with current politics like getting laws passed to make voting more accessible, allowing women to have an abortion, equal rights to the LGBTQ communities, and dealing with idiot politicians that believe in weird conspiracy theories like election fraud, COVID being fake, or giant space lasers shooting at the trees(Like seriously? What the hell?), we sure have it much better than what a low ranked North Korean family has to go through on a daily basis in what is arguably the most corrupt government in the world. I am glad that you were able to sneak in foreign movies and you guys were able to enjoy gaming like Nintendo. I'm a big Super Mario fan and used to play those games a lot when I was a little girl with my cousins and friends. I wish you and your families peace and happiness.
I want to thank you two ladies for sharing your stories. I have learned so much about North Korea from the both of you , and Yuna. I would have not known otherwise. When you both talk about the life of your people , I can see how much it pains you through your eyes. You are all such beautiful ladies. Asian woman are some of the most beautiful woman in the world. I love your accents. I’m very happy that you have freedom now, and will continue to pray 🙏🏼 for freedom for the people of North Korea.❤️
This was very nice. It was... humanizing? I don't know how to put it, but it's very nice to listen to how some other culture lives. It is horrible that it's so bad, but I like listening to those very human perspectives.
I feel so ignorant! Since I saw a story about you I have binge watched so much about you and North Korea. It BLOWS MY MIND that this is happening still today!!! It infuriates me! Thank God you two got away, but I wish we could save all the people suffering at the hands of the regime!! The REGIEM WILL SUFFER ETERNITY IN HELL!!
9:24 Public schools and private schools aren't that much different. You just have to pay for private schools because they aren't funded by tax dollars. Most times these private schools teach Christian theology along with normal subjects. I went to a public school in a poor rural area, so the tax dollars coming from that community was minimal. Other high schools that are in richer areas (where the tax dollars coming in are higher) are much better. It's not a fair situation because kids in wealthy communities get better education, better food, more choices for clubs/sports/etc, a better school building, air conditioning and good heating, etc. Teachers also get paid more in these wealthy areas. It's sad to see that kids aren't getting equal opportunities.
My father in law was from China, he got out in the 90's, and went to the US. Of course China was very different back then, but he kept the habit of keeping an insane amount of dollars in cash. Remember one time he was visiting us in DK and we were going to Vienna by air... He had to explain why he had more than 10k USD on him and in his suitcase, before security would let him go 😋 Habits don't die easily... He'd been living something like 20 years in the US. When I travel I usually keep 50 USD and 50 EUR in smaller notes. Because I know that it can come in handy if you want some local help.. but that amount is just ridiculous 😋
Yeonmi You are Gift of God for humanity ❣️ opening the eyes of millions of people that in the shape of human there are devils and their propaganda .You are the champion of freedem and possess all the good qualities as a human we should strive for.
I was born in Cuba under Fidel Castro's dictatorship. It was not as harsh and extreme as in N. Korea but I can totally relate to having no free speech, no freedom in general... and living in total misery...
i like this cherry girl. she’s very honest. unlike certain times where yeonmi has changed her story to appeal to the audience. she’s honest about her family and saying that they were more upper middle class. and whenever she stated that they were pretty well off, yeonmi tried steering her into the direction to say that they starved and ate bugs and grass 😐 then she put on screen instead of saying out loud, that eating eggs every day means you’re rich. and then commented about her height saying that attributed (which i don’t doubt) but yeonmi could just be genetically shorter. idk, there’s just allot that she over exaggerates. ***** does anyone pick up on the awful lot of “mmmmm’s” they do while the other is talking? as a form of like agreeing while they talk. it’s ALL I COULD HEAR HAHA. and then when she started talking about her school, she started explaining and then when she said her school name yeonmi was like “oh yeah science school” and she was like “uh no not really”, then also tried playing off her other saying about it being a “genius” school, and she shot her down again. and then, finally she said it was just an elite school and she j agreed.

another inconsistency: in another one of her “day in the life” videos, she said she was starving at school because they are before they left, worked so long & didn’t have enough food to take w to school. and didn’t eat til dinner when she got home. but just now she said that “oh yeah you take bento box to school for lunch”. soooo (it’s at 14:02)
I'm pretty sure food was scarce and inconsistent. It's not like everyday she had a bento box with her. Also, she was in a higher class before her dad got arrested. Also also, there are other kids who brought bento boxes or went home to eat other than her. You can talk about bringing lunch to school without ever bringing lunch personally because other kids did that.
@@toastytoast3271 th-cam.com/video/uDXkdjx7VAE/w-d-xo.html you gotta watch her old videos. In this one she says she used to play super Mario with her friends and eat at fancy restaurants in Pyongyang because her family were elites in NK
Where you guys part of the elite class in North Korea? You guys don't look like you were laborers or very poor (by nk standards). You guys have very clean and smooth skin. I know people who grew up very poor they have dark or wrinkled skin from being exposed to the sun all day. The sun damage their skin a lot.
Omg I live in Chicago I wish to meet you some day I love your channel and what you are doing. What's your favorite part in Chicago I love the downtown area Navi pier, six flags.
It’s honestly so sad that the families who could afford to eat fish or eggs with their rice most days are considered very wealthy in North Korea. Being able to buy eggs is the marker for wealth 😢💙
Have you talked about the people who live in the city vs the people who live in the countryside? Because the people you always see "living well" are usually the ones who are part of the government, they're still have no freedom but live better than the rest.

Be careful about giving too much detail away about your location.
I'm sure you're very careful about personal details.
Yeonmi, could you tell us something about your experience of learning English language?
And could you compare languages in DPRK (maybe South K too) and English?
Is Korean language easy to learn compared to English?
I very much enjoy your videos here! You are very intelligent and gifted!
I'm from Chicago, let's hang!

The U.S: oh my gosh North Korea is expanding their military capability!! 😱
Remember, indiscriminate coward aerial bombing over cities and towns in the Korean war wiped out 20% of the innocent civilian population in North Korea.
Moreover, century-old bullied practices of Capitalist Imperialist Western Sanctions over other nations throughout the whole wide world, (including in N. Korea, where Western sanctions caused over a million innocent N. Koreans deaths in famine/starvation in the past) are nothing more than "Economic Terrorism"; plain and simple. 🤔

Awwwww damn I like them alot
It is always nice to hear more from miss Cherie. I pray that her mother gets better. I hope my donation helped.
This is one of the most genuinely wholesome content you can find... So much hard work and heart it takes to have accomplished such a feat is mind-blowing! Were glad to have you here telling your story of sheer will and heart.
Idk about wholesome. Some of the stuff they talk about is pretty gruesome imo. Agree with all the other stuff tho. They're pretty awesome.
I'm very happy this isn't a clickbait title. Keep this up, please.
Its so wholesome to see you two together 💖😭
That was the fakest shut I ever heard l ao
Good to see Cherie again!
Thank you for sharing your life story with us.
Thanks for this interesting video!
Thank you for so frequently good video creating! God bless you, Yeonmi 🙏
Hi Yeonmi I hope you are doing well
I'm From Algeria 🇩🇿 and I've Read your Book
I've learned a lot from it about daily life in North Korea
I recommend it to everyone that haven't read it yet
I wish you More success in your Life

How brave these young women are! So proud of you
I love seeing these collaborations between North Korean defectors. It's good to hear all the different things each person went through before they escaped.
Good vid, I love listening about the hardships you guys faced in North Korea; it makes me more aware of how much I should be grateful for.
Thanks Yeonmi.
Also, you guys should do more videos together!
Yeonmi, your good nature makes me laugh. You remind me so much of one of my granddaughters. Best to you & Cherie! :)
Keep going!
Lol Joe Rogan th-cam.com/video/pJCY7dS7StU/w-d-xo.html
Just because there is bigger suffering, it doesn't mean one should not also adress domestic problems... Because no country is perfect, there is always room for improvement... of course one shouldn't be nitpicking about every detail, but even in rich countries there are severe underlying issues that need to change, especially regarding infrastructure or digitalisation of rural areas.
Which story did you fall in love with? Do some research might find out her story has changed multiple times about what's happened to her what happened. She's becoming a propaganda tool and that's it. Some liberal groups hired an HR firm to help coach her on what to say.
@@DiiAM00NDx3 so true
It’s precisely because we in the west complain about things that we live free
Fascinating, thank you both.
Yeonmi, you're a great interviewer. You really put your guests at ease with your laid back approach and casual demeanour.
I cannot stop watching your videos!
Thank you both for sharing your experiences with us. Yeonmi, as always, you are my hero!
OBSESSED WITH YOUR CHANNEL GIRL
We're glad to have you wonderful ladies here in Chicago.❤🙏🕊
No not at all
I am glad that Cherie has moved to Chicago and hopeful to watch/listen to more videos of the two of you together. Stay safe, ladies.
Thank you for sharing the stories of other defectors.
Thanks

Very interesting. Two different life experiences. Great video Yeonmi.
Excellent Video Yeonmi and Sherry.
I love how they both cover their mouths when they laugh. Every time.
I hadn't noticed until you mentioned. Someone else commented that their culture considers it impolite to let anyone see inside their mouth. Like covering for a sneeze?
Because these women are still feminine, unlike many western women.

Good Morning Yeonmi. Much Love from Colorful Colorado.
Ironically NES is one of my best childhood memories in the States also lol the power of games
Their children are their future adults.

i feel the same about the US/NATO (60% of whole world's military budget, if you count the other 'allies' outside NATO like Japan, Saudi Arabia, Israel so on it is almost 75%).

That’s what I keep thinking! Revolutionary against what? What are they rising against?
Against usa and japan and south korea.
I feel so ignorant! Since I saw a story about you I have binge watched so much about you and North Korea. It BLOWS MY MIND that this is happening still today!!! It infuriates me! "Jay why are you packing up your bags to go to Chicago?"
How did you learn english? you speak very good and fluently! well done
He had to explain why he had more than 10k USD on him and in his suitcase, before security would let him go 😋
Habits don't die easily... He'd been living something like 20 years in the US.
When I travel I usually keep 50 USD and 50 EUR in smaller notes. Because I know that it can come in handy if you want some local help.. but that amount is just ridiculous 😋
Such positive and happy ladies, from such a miserable place.
Trumpy says that the North Korean people are the happiest people in the world. His good buddy Kim told him so, that makes it true, Right?
So cute how they cover there mouth when they laugh!🐣
It's polite to cover your mouth. No one wants to see inside it
Chicago is under my control, too.

Sounded like Cherie had an ideal childhood!
Forcing all children to engage in heavy physical labor from lunch to 10 pm - alone this one thing is a crime of the regime.
So there are no lawyers in North Korea, only prosecutors…
Omg I live in Chicago I wish to meet you some day I love your channel and what you are doing. What's your favorite part in Chicago I love the downtown area Navi pier, six flags.
It’s honestly so sad that the families who could afford to eat fish or eggs with their rice most days are considered very wealthy in North Korea. Being able to buy eggs is the marker for wealth 😢💙
Omg you’re in Chicago?!!
Have you talked about the people who live in the city vs the people who live in the countryside? Because the people you always see "living well" are usually the ones who are part of the government, they're still have no freedom but live better than the rest.
