- A lot of misconceptions surrounding UX Design out there. So I’m here to bust some of those UX Designer myths. These are my personal opinions, so per usual, don’t come at me, bro. Thanks for watching!

Okay chiming in here, I graduated with a degree in UX, last week. LOL from the top Canadian Design school, and I wasn't going to be employed. Especially If I had only looked for jobs locally. But in September of 2021 I Decided I was going to Learn blender and 3D tools as its a passion of mine, and post everyday on dribbble. Long story short. Now I make close to six figures and was head hunted for my job, which is amazing.The crux of this is. Invest in yourself and your unique passion and skillset, make yourself one of a kind, and put yourself out there. And most importantly take opportunities whether there in your backyard or halfway across the world.

Which design school did you go to and where did you apply for jobs? I am starting at Uoft for Master of Information, UX concentration in fall.
And this role is as a UX designer? I also have started to learn blender not necessarily to supplement my UX design but cause I was always interested in 3D modeling. Did learning blender and such help you get the job? Would love to hear! :)

Preeeeaacchhhh!!!!! I’ve been a product designer for 8 years. Glad people like your self are speaking the truth on expectations. 80% of most design roles at larger companies focus on building relationships than working in tools knowing all the keyboard shortcuts.
What is one advice you would give to product designers to build healthy stakeholder relationships?
@@sophiajin4286 understand your own emotions and triggers before trying to understand others. Then put your self in their shoes and look at the world through their experiences. It’s easy to place blame based on our own personal experiences. But we are the sum total of our career and personal upbringings. After that, be clear on their expectations of success and let them know what you need from them in order to perform your best. If none of this works, trust your instincts and move on. Not every place is made for you and that’s ok.
From experience.. there are a lot of those types of designers. The best of the best build relationships and demo high fidelity vision to inspire entire teams for leadership buy-in. You need both skills, but at to excel at the very top 1% of the industry.. expertise on tooling and talent is the difference maker and that doesn’t happen overnight.

What would I need to study in college to become a product designer?
The more I read UX design through books and discussion online. This job needs life learning and tons of practical experience to be confident in that field. I'm glad you share those truth. Learning different types of design work is so important. It really helps to know what kind of job or team you want to join.
Do you have any book recommendations?
To me, it seems that TRUTH is available to all who seek it and can be acquired through experience. The education provides you with the language to communicate your knowledge to others so that teams can work more effectively together. Education owns the language, but not the truth.
Hi there, great comment☺️Plus great video and right to the point. I’m just now looking into UX design and pivoting my work over the next 4-5 months. Your comment really struck me because - I’m not fresh out of school and I’ve already had a lot of life experience plus worked and thrived in 3 separate fields. Now’ I’m thinking of designs to support my current lifestyle and how these designs could help others who are living similarly. The last 7 years have given me a ton of experience and I realize UX design could be the best path for me. I’m also looking at front end dev training. I am taking some bootcamps and will narrow down which program in the next month or so. Thank you for making realize I have the life experience and that is equally important as training. Hey Mimi! I looove your videos! I can definitely relate as I've switched from customer service/support to UX recently. So many bootcamps and programs have somewhat false advertising when it comes to actually getting the job, the timeframe of job hunting and the salary expectations. Also, there's not enough emphasis on how to apply the skills you do learn from the programs into the real world. Can't wait to see more of your content

If you're familiar with any educational institute (college, bootcamps, extension classes, etc.) I feel like they ALWAYS hard sell you on the ~dream job life~ & gloss over the other XYZ factors that come into play on getting into these advertised jobs. It's annoying fr lol

Oh man I totally feel this. I worked in UX Research and was mentored by my former teacher from college. I worked project-project and not full-time for nearly 5 years. I had imposter syndrome so I took both the Springboard/Udacity UX Design bootcamps... I can get interviews but still get screwed over. That's why I'm building up my website as a backup lol. Market is totally oversaturated... and companies are STILL super picky despite the media saying there's plenty of "tech jobs" out there... XD

1. love the video (had to make coffee the moment I saw yours lol)
2. Tools you use isn't the most important skill BUT it depends. If the role is put on the market for someone to be able to pick up work ASAP they might struggle initially if they're not fluent in them. However, usually tools are simple enough you can learn them before you even start working at the company lol.
My advice - look into using Figma for creating design systems, tokens, version control, good practices in file management and dev handover. Understanding design systems already puts you above 99% of candidates :)
Do we need to learn coding for ui ux design?
Hi Mimi - love your content, but often times i feel like the title and thumbnail of your videos dont match the content of your video - this one for example could have been - Debugging the Myths around UX design or Myth or Facts. But overall your content is very informative and great!!!
I am Soooooooo TOTALLY with you on this JB description BS. I thought I was the only one who saw it this way. I learned through experience and developed my own innovations to achieve massive results, yet in interviews, they focus on the tools, just like you say.
I think it is because so much about marketing and design is a mystery to anyone who isn't actually deep into it and so, they focus on the tools because this makes sense to them from their surface-level understanding.
Needed to hear this. I’m a working college student and I was thinking getting a UX design cert would increase my opportunities for positions that pay well.

I'm wondering if you could provide more info on what UX salaries look like, especially from the point of view of applying right out of bootcamp? It might be too personal, but I'm wondering what your salary progression has been like since graduating yourself. I know salaries vary based on location (although I'm from the Ca/SF Bay Area, so our locations are more synced up), but I'm wondering how things differ based on reported salaries on sites like Glassdoor vs what you actually experienced in reality applying/getting hired by companies. Hope you see this - and again, thank you so much for all your work you put into this channel!

I’m an architecture student studying UX design because I wanted to explore other aspects of design outside architecture. And I’m glad you’re saying exactly what a lot of people needed to hear. This applies to a lot of fields, actually. I want more people to do things because they care and not solely (although it’s important) because they’d like to make money. And you hit the mail on the head when you said the tools get you to where you want! Amazing and insightful video!
I’m also an architecture student and I’m curious about Ui/Ux design cause it seems like so many of my peers
are going into it (especially since it’s believed to be more lucrative) it’s really interesting to see someone talk about this part of the profession cause all I’ve been seeing is how lucrative it is
@@adetokunboojikutu6094 yeah! But, at the end of the day. It’s also a career path like architecture and lucrative does not equal simple. I wish people would understand that it’s a lot more technical than it’s portrayed. So far into my journey, it’s not been very easy because there’s so much theories to learn if you’re to excel in the field.

Do you find being an architecture student is an asset in learning UX design? I am a recent graduate of architecture and am considering transitioning, as I don't want to practice as an architect- but am wondering if the cons are similar/ if it is an appropriate fit.
Very true, and it’s not just bootcamps that sell a fantasy. I got a degree specializing in Human-Computer Interaction and when you’re going through the program NO ONE tells you what UX design is really like in the real world, or that it’s oversaturated and you’re competing with hundreds of other people to get a job. I’m now 6 years into my career as a UX designer and it still is very different than they described it to be in school. Also, it’s so oversaturated that even at 6 years of experience I’m being overlooked for jobs by people that have 7+ years of experience.
Could you share how to better utilize the learning resources from Human-Computer Interaction program. I feel like systematic learning will be helpful for someone who don't have UX design background and want to develop a promising career in the long run. I'm going to apply for an online program because I'm working a full-time job. Any suggestion will be very helpful.
@@daliwood8900 you can study Apple HIG and Material design guidelines to understand the principles of UI design. UX design is so broad you can practically start from a variety of different places like research, strategy or testing. My advice is to understand what UX entails, know the basic process, do a personal project, get feedback from different designers, PMs or engineers on ADP list and iterate based on the feedback to make your project better. You would literally be practicing how designers work in the real world while gaining skills. Practice is always the best teacher in my opinion.
@@comodesignstudio_la Thabk you so much for your advise. I don’t want to invest 30k for another master degree only find It’s unnecessary. I want to study some online courses first to see if I really want to do it or what aspect of UX I want to focus.

When I came across this video, I had to chime in on the conversation! Glad to help and to see other videos like this. I've seen too many people get affected in negative ways by not knowing the reality.

I think the importance of being good at different design tools vary depending on the size of the company you're applying to work for and your own seniority.
It's definitely true that you can jump from project to project and grasp the basic features of any design tool quickly, but that way you never learn advanced features that allow you to for example manage design systems or larger design scopes maintained within a design tool.
I use Figma at my work and I can definitely tell if someone is not very good at it and should have spent a little more time learning.
Same for analytics! Some job descriptions talk about requiring experience with enterprise-level web analytics accounts that see X million hits per month. It's just numbers! It's the thinking that matters.
Ux is what I want to do over anything else but I too feel like it's sketchy... I feel like it's way over saturated, kinda sucks. I can't give it up though lol. I'm basically studying for two different careers, I just can't give up on ux. I wish I could just go all in

I’m considering a career change to UX/UI. Do you believe it’s possible to land a paying job transitioning from my previous field of project management? Or is it almost always the roadmap to take unpaid internships to get your foot in the door?
Hi Mimi! Im a new UX designer and was wondering how you deal with fellow team members not liking something you designed? Currently in a bit of a slump after show casing some new wireframes that essentially got shut down and I was asked to re-design half of it.
There's this really awesome book called "Articulating Design Decisions" by Tom Greever that goes into this exact topic.
You'll grow and just take it day by day. Find out what they don't like and how they would change it. Should be feedback you can work with. Just picture yourself in 6 months to a year and focus on the one new thing you learn everyday. Good luck, I've felt like this in both my design jobs as I grew from graphic design into ux / ui

@@tayoshane3345 It took me a year to learn UX (but it could take you less because I'm a bit of a perfectionist). I took a UI course afterwards, then I figured out it needs a lot of practice and ended up burned out since I was doing all of that besides my 9-5 job. I quit.

Work for free to do your portfolio is a common experience in creative field. Dancers, photographers, circus people etc, etc do a few free projects in the beginning. Guess what? All of them are always crying that the field is oversaturated so as Uber drivers and Doordashers🙄 there’s always gonna be people who are focused on lack.
Process over tools; tools change, processes get refined but hardly changes.

I think ultimately the bigger tech companies want people with higher education. But let’s be real you can do really well in freelance as well! Also starting your own business. I went into knowing exactly what I wanted to do and already drew out my plan. Mapping your success is so important! Also being self sufficient will get you so far! We live in a wonderful era where we can use ai to help us do our job faster & more efficiently. Good luck to everyone!

By $0.00 do you mean your first job you were doing for free? That's nuts. Can you make a video talking about your experience at that job? I'd love to know how a company can get away with paying someone nothing.
Not uncommon for a lot of junior designers. Pro bono work is for designers to get experience and case study projects for their portfolio. A lot of companies weed out designers with less experience so working for free is an "easy" way to puff your resume.
@@mattphan9881 Creative industry will always be a turbulent start for most people unless you're parents are already extremely well connected. Small companies need the help but can't afford to pay... Young designers need the work but can't pay school debt and live without pay... Government can't support people if people aren't working to pay taxes... Guess all you can do is work at some other entry job and freelance on the side until you have enough experience to do it full-time. I think if you really want something, you have to do whatever it takes to get there... And if the reason why you want something isn't good enough to motivate you through those times... then maybe you need to ask yourself if YOU really want it? Or are you doing it because of something else? Change what you want or change the motivation as to why you want it... I think it's possible to make a career doing anything these days, it's all a matter of persistence and luck.
@@gabriellahong6485 there is a fine line to doing what it takes. In general, product (or user experience) design is devalued at many organizations and believe designers just make interfaces or things "pretty". The work that goes into solving complex problems in meaningful ways validated by users isn't a simple task. So going in working for free only reinforces and devalues this industry more. I've been a product designer for nearly a decade and have gone through it all. I've worked for free, been expected to output work that's a graphic designer's job, worked entry level, wear many different hats in a designer role etc.. - I've done it all. Junior designer's tend to be insecure about their own abilities (imposter syndrome) and will honestly do anything to land a job. Some companies that can't afford a designer they will prey (not with malicious intent) and leverage this to their advantage to get free work... knowingly or unknowingly. So my point, is that not getting paid in exchange for experience, is a means to an end to landing a stable job but can also devalue your work/worth.
I am building relationships with Product Designers right now in order to really understand the reality of the job. I still want the job though - and that’s it. LOL

@@gezzapks. Yes you will be happy because money helps with paying your bills, paying off debt and hlpeing your family.
I make 96k and I’m able to pay my bills on time, finished paying off my debt, and I can help my mom with money when she needs.
I don’t get scared anymore when I go to the supermarket and swipe my card to pay and wonder if my card will get declined because of low funds.
This has made me happier because it has eliminated a lot of stress.
actually money is the main motivator most times

Is there any point in specializing only in UI design? Or if the graphics part is the most important to me, then might as well focus on marketing/brand design?
Depends on what you enjoy doing more. If you like print design or graphic design,, then I would focus more on that rather than UX :)
It's true. Sometimes just the logo itself screws up the entire look-and-feel and I might as well don't want to do it because it screws up my entire artwork that I love the most and enjoy doing. In Chinese, 一朵鲜花插在牛粪上, come on... no real artists willing to make their work looks like this. The tools? My only UI/UX tools are CSS, VS Code, jQuery, that's all. Icon and image design? I use MS PowerPoint -- Do you believe that? ^^

I don't know why you're annoyed but it must be the internet trolls. It's strange how people act so differently behind a computer and are mean just for entertainment. Anyways - not to give my life story but after finally figuring out health issues I have a better feel for what I might enjoy. Seems like there are people from nearly every industry going into this. My interests are neuroscience, jiu jitsu, creative writing, chess. And petting my cat. Having a hard time knowing what this would be like and if I would enjoy it or not. Feel clueless here. Guess I just have to start studying it and see if it's a good fit.
Boot camp isn’t it get and actual degree in it then the pay comes . For example my degree is an AS In Ux and graphic design that mean you get trained in both fields at that point you struggle with making logo and stuff you can design everything thing .

This girl is very young and had no idea what an internship was before going into this. Go in upwork and do any job you can. It's temporary. I graduated high school in 2007, and at that age I knew I had to work my ass off for nothing before anyone trusted me with any job. 🙃 everything in this video is obvious but also not trye for everyone. Keep in mind that she graduated from bootcamp with ZERO experience and is able to make a living. While also admitting that she knows people who have graduated and landed a good paying job right out of boot camp. The clickbate is serious with this one.

You say a lot of shit, if you want to get paid well, there is only one thing you can do, have a really good portfólio of personal and free-lancer projects, and be a generalist UX Designer, be a pro in all fields of UI/UX Design, I didn't completed the program to get the certificate, but if I were a company like google, I would like to hire a guy with a lot of free lancer projects, and someone that got great grades troughout the google certificate program. I am litteraly taking notes on every single words on the google certificate program, and I am sure that my effort will pay off. My father always said to me, you can be whatever you want, but just be the best in your field, there are TEACHERS getting paid 6 figures, simply because they are the best in their field, keep that in mind.
