Miss Mimi, there’s a specific note you didn’t hit in regard to more internships being available which is the devaluation of bootcamps as an entry point for the job. Many of the internships available require applicants to be university students, so for those who went out for an HCI degree this is great news. Now for those of us who did bootcamps (like the one you advertise) or for the self taught folks who are learning on their own, this specific point does not qualify as a win. The good news is that there are more hybrid and on site jobs available depending on where you live so competition being reduced to your city as opposed to the entire country is a good thing. The bootcamp I went to closed down their US based operations and is currently expanding overseas so perhaps the interest in the United States has gone down in regards to search or money being invested specifically in bootcamps but best believe they are going strong overseas and selling the dream in latin america and europe.
Thank you for this comment! This is such a huge thing happening rn. Also thanks for mentioning us self-taught people who are accounted for, I wish they did more early career/apprenticeship like Google or Pinterest but even then those are so competitive.
The UX role can be quite unconventional, as it often involves developers transitioning into design while others are trying to master both disciplines simultaneously. To be honest, continuous learning benefits everyone. Additionally, with the rise of no-code tools, designers now have a greater opportunity to compete with developers, leveling the playing field in the process.
Thanks for your content! Landed my first ux role 6 months ago :) Would love to see the new desk set up before Black Friday and how you like your new mouse!!
Yea I am in a career transition from fashion to ux. And it’s been rough! I did a bootcamp and 8+ yrs of design experience outside of ux, but they do not care 😭 and yes the internships thing is so true. But I feel like it’s a double edge sword, a lot of people with other experience can’t afford to go back to school to try to get their foot in the door.
Like your style, I'm subscribed. I had 3 companies say they're looking for more exp after I interviewed, and another where I went the whole way and got beat out by a friend of the director...
"america..?.....Amerikah!" had me laughing 😁 great video. As a little add note: the lines are also starting to blur again to what the description of the job actually is eventho they might SAY it is a UX position, it might contain graphic design, marketing, development and so on.. so having more than one tool in your bag is a good thing.
Our UX big sister posting another banger ‼️ Super helpful and comforting insights…I just got laid off recently so I finally took the leap of faith and am enrolled in Deaignlab’s foundations course. Looking forward to seeing some more content from you while I’m in the thick of the journey!! 🤩
