My fave Joni Mitchell tune. Most listens to the song drown me in my own tears but instead I'm watching you more than listening to the song itself. Rock on, OT!
Joni's piano incorporates notes from Jingle Bells. Maybe that's where the odd pitches come from. She lives in California where it's warm and green year round but come Xmas, she longs for the Canadian winter where a whole river can freeze over and you can skate its length.
I always felt that the last note she sang : "I wish I had a river I could skate awayyy onnn..." was intended to trail off a bit flat, so it ends in dissonance. Lol!! This was from BLUE, a legendary album that took songwriting and lyrics to a very REAL place, unlike anyone before her. This song is full of self-loathing and regret for driving "the perfect companion" away. The title track, 'Blue' is an ode to self destructive patterns. The album closes with the devastating "The last Time I Saw Richard". For anyone wishing to be schooled in songwriting and powerful bars, this whole album is crucial.
The album is called BLUE (voted by Rolling Stone Mag as 3rd best album of all time) , so that gives a hint as to the entire tone of the album. This song is about her breakup with Graham Nash. Her voice is perfect as is.
In the 1970s radio disk jockeys hated this song. Every Christmas season they'd be bombarded with constant requests to play it instead of cheery Xmas music. I suspect Joni was purposefully flat on that note because the message was a bit sour, so it matched.
Joni! Fabulous request, Chucky. Her Blue album is truly one of the best, ever. The title eludes to the emotional tone of the content. Great reaction, Faith - love seeing you react to her. Much love, guys! BTW, IMO not pitchy - just real with the feel of the song.
It's called "vocal fry." Singers who can control it use it to convey more emotion in their voice, to sound pained or despondent even. It's almost like a small cry there at the very end. A singer who used vocal fry a lot was Kenny Rogers. Listen to his live performance in Vegas of "Lady". It's a master class on vocal fry.
I love this whole album. Please do Blue from this same album. Joni is also a great painter. She once said I write music for my sorrow and I paint for my joy. Joni never had the best of luck in love so alot of her songs are about that. This is an artist you really should dig into deeper. I believe you will become a fan. I am sure you know some of her songs, everyone does and so many cover her songs, also.
Good reaction. Don't know how familiar you are with Joni Mitchell but I personally would recommend "Woodstock", "Carry", "A Case of You" and quite a few others.
She is just fantastic and if you want to hear her piano, react to her performing Woodstock live in studio. Of course, if you want to see her playing the dulcimer, you have to check her out performing California. There is only one Joni. Coyote or A Case of You are also favs.
Thanks to whomever requested this reaction. You're right Faith, it's a break-up song -- inspired by her break-up with Graham Nash (of Crosby-Stills-and-Nash) in 1970. It was coincidentally around Christmas time. I think she was in her late twenties, when her voice was very high and almost fragile-sounding. You did a great job on the reaction. Thank you.
Faith more coming..u will retract the pitchy comment. Joni is a total legend ..her Blue Album was rated one of the Top 5 albums of all time by Rolling Stone
Late to the party...pitchiness was kind of her, only occasionally, though. She also made up tunings. It was a break-up song about Graham Nash, so yeah, sad

Blue and Carole King's Tapestry, being recorded at the same time in the same studios. Mind blown.

She gave her baby to adoption in her real life. Joni is my Queen!
It IS a sad song... end of relationship and feeling sad about Christmas in that moment..
Beautiful, and so sad.

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle All The Way (in a dif key)

I too noticed that "pitchy" note at the very end.. think it was intentional to evoke pain/emotion?
It was SUPPOSED to be a little 'pitchy' ... !

All these advert drops. 👎
