Just to shed some light on how prolific a songwriter Prince was , when the Purple Rain movie came out they interviewed his co-star Appolonia. She said that at the time of the movie release , Prince already had the music recorded for 10 albums. Said he could release them the next day if he wanted to. Most artist are lucky if they record 10 albums in their entire career.
As far as other of his great live performances, see stuff from the "Sign 'O' The Times" concert film: "Play In The Sunshine," "Housequake," "I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man," "Hot Thing," "If I was Your Girlfriend," "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night." Heck, just watch the whole concert, it's so good. You can't go wrong with any of his live performances from any era. He was incredible.
You gotta' move beyond this Prince can only be 'high energy' thing; he is a certifiable ballad master (Adore, Do Me Baby, Shhh, Insatiable, Beautiful Ones, etc.). Get on board, you'll thank me later. 🎶
He was already very successful before the Purple Rain album, with the 1999 album (& was already successful even before that, too). Everyone on the planet knew the song 1999 and we were all calculating how old we'd be in 1999. And of course the song was played at midnight around the world when 1999 rolled around. But yes, Purple Rain the album and movie raised him up to even more established global icon.
In addition to his 39 albums, he also left behind a vault of thousands of unreleased songs. Also, keep in mind he did all those dance moves IN HIGH HEELS.
Don't underestimate Prince when it comes to dancing and singing at the same time. Yes, this was from the film Purple Rain but Prince rarely lip sync, his microphone was ALWAYS ON!! Don't be confused, he and MJ were total opposites, both great but completely different.
Oh my God! The Prince rabbit hole is DEEP! You should check out is live performance of "Motherless Child!" He shows why he's one of the best guitarists of all time!
To truly appreciate his talent you need to watch him live. A few suggestions are his Superbowl Halftime Show, Play That Funky Music Medley or Motherless Child.
My personal favorite from Prince is "The Beautiful ones." It's a ballad but extremely raw, and his vocals are insane. Btw, don't ever react to "Darling Nikki" unless you want to watch Samantha turn 50 shades of embarrassment. 😂
His first album he wrote all the songs, produced the album and played all the instruments at the age of 18 or 19. Check out his Live 4 Love, live performance or his Superbowl performance.
Prince and MJ are James Brown's legacy. If there were no JB there'd be no MJ or Prince. Prince would also be a part of the legacy of one of the architects of rock n roll itself, Little Richard.
Prince is the greatest stage entertainer that ever was! One of the greatest guitarists as well. I didn't realize that fact until I actually saw him Live in Concert. He BLEW the ROOF off of the acoustically perfect Auditorium!
Awesome! I'm glad you guys loved my suggestion, and thank you for the review. I love it! ❤🙏🏽 I think I'm pretty dialed in to what you guys like, and we are just scratching the surface on Prince. I know his catalog well. Here's another 🔥 Prince song called Endorphinmachine: th-cam.com/video/09vNPhIk4QU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=DGL4SpEC3AnxrM0R
Yeah, Prince is awesome with his style, vocals, , dancing his entire presence is so great!!❤❤❤ Love all of his videos and the movie!!🍿 🎥 I hope you guys react to more! ❤❤
Prince was a true star, hit after hit and everyone seemed to like him and all of his music back then at least here in Australia. I like his music still, and I think the young people would to, if they had never heard it before, and you didn't tell them that it was old first. I lalso ove his raunchy song Darling Niki check that out!
Fun fact. The club used in the film, and this video from the film, is First Avenue in Minneapolis. I used to dance there weekly for a few years in the early 90s. Fun times.
Here are the years Prince put out an album: 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92. Of course more after that but from 78-92 he had 14 albums. But get this, not listed as Prince albums are The Time's 81 and 82 albums. Both Prince albums with Morris Day as lead vocals. So he really put out 16 albums. Taylor Swift has 8 albums in 18 years. Prince doubled her production in less years. And he did everything on his albums. Kids today have no clue about music. Or what it takes for an artist to be great. They pay $300 for tickets and don't get half or a third of what Prince gave in a concert.
I hope his family release some of his vault music if it really exists. Imagine the gems yet to be heard. I used to not take him seriously in my younger days, thinking he was just a pop star. Then I heard I would die for you and was hooked. A true artist and unbelievable talent. Nobody even comes close ❤
Enjoyed the reaction guys! And Prince's catalog of music is very, very deep. His estate is still releasing songs that were never heard before. My kids bought the Purple Rain album as a gift for me when it came out. They played it more than I did😂 As others have mentioned Let's Go Crazy is another high energy song you'll love.
The video was from the movie but the recording was done live at the club First Avenue that was featured in the film. I Would Die 4 U, Baby I’m a Star and Purple Rain were recorded live at a benefit concert he did at First Avenue and used for the album. You should check out anything live by Prince especially from the 80’s and 90’s if you want the high energy and dancing. He was still high energy in the 2000’s but he stopped doing the splits and some other stuff. I saw him in concert in 2004 and 2011 and it was awesome. America is a great choice because he plays the guitar and also the drums. It’s from 1985.

Just so you know, I know you at least know how iconic he was, and what a musical legacy he left, but to be honest, as huge as 1999 and Purple Rain was ( 1999 made him a superstar, Purple Rain made him a megastar) , both were just small moments in his legacy, because of the music and effect he made before and after those albums, going back to even before his first album, and all the way to the two albums he released a few years before his death in 2016.

Prince was also a prolific songwriter. He wrote for many other artists, Sinad O'Conner, Cyndi Lauper, The Bangles, Stevie Nicks, and Cha Khan, just to name a few. He was a musical genius/savant.
This is the last scene of the movie. It's just sort of a celebration song after he slays the crowd with his performance of "Purple Rain." You can see Morris Day and his bandmates (The Time), who were his rivals in the movie, cheering him on from the audience.
Not only 39 studio albums. Extended versions of hit songs on single releases. Plus dozens of B sides from Album single releases as well. Prince’s B sides were just as HOT 🔥🔥🔥 as the hit singles. Here is a shortlist of a few of Prince’s B sides: “she’s always in my hair”, “ irresistible bitch”, “erotic city”, “17 days” & “how come you don’t call me anymore”,, just to name a few. The recording is live from 83' concert. They used a lot of material from that concert, including Purple rain. You really need to react to a live performance. Try "America" live from Paris. It's a great performance.
I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm A Star and Purple Rain were actually recorded live at First Ave & 7th Street Entry and are the tracks on the Purple rain albumn. The movie scenes of these songs were filmed later.
Watch the movie Purple Rain and you will see the genius. You need to understand he totally controlled his music from writing it to playing all instruments on his first five albums to producing them, doing covers and liners, designing costumes and having them made by his wardrobe employees. He was homeless at around twelve and decided he would push his music to succeed. His work ethic was amazing. A band didn’t come into existence until he started touring.
