My "home rig" solution" has changed (progressively) with my increased awareness of sonic issues, improvements in technology, and pricing of available amps, pedals, guitars, microphones and computers, etc.. Change is the proof your living and finding the latest "solutions" is evidence your "alive" and not simply subsisting. Remain anxious to embrace changes because they will come.
I like the format with Dan doing the technical stuff and Mick jumping in to clarify the bits us mere mortals don't fully understand. Keep up the good work guys!
Man, i have been on the TPS wagon for a decade now, I hve never, not even once ever thought, Oh Mick and Dan are being paid to do this or say that!!! I mean, if you were paid, great....but you guys put the honesty and integrity above money. So nothing to doubt really!!
Same. The only thing i could think is "they like some brands a bit more because they like the people who work there" like Thorpy, Kingsley, Keeley, UA or TC (Tore), Boss (Matt) or Josh at JHS. Other than that (and that's what we all do with our friends products and work... we root for them), it seems pointless to me to think in those terms.
TPS ‘A Christmas Carol’ with Mick as Scrooge never gets past act 1 as Mick ends up arguing the validity of psychological time with the ghost of Christmas past. Redwing sounds fantastic. Well done everyone involved.
The vibe I’m getting from this Redwing is that it’s as much a home science kit as it is a guitar pedal. An opportunity for Dan to put on a lab coat and do series of Mr. Wizard episodes about the underlying “chemistry” of sound modulation. 🧙♂️
I got peoples that train in Thai kickboxing. I believe that you two could do an episode practicing this while sampling pedals. It would be amazebaklls.
I have, as yet, no regrets about upgrading anything. All of us are at risk of downgrading. We should be developing ability to learn the difference - albeit sometimes painfully. Learning is always worth any associated "pain".

I think part of the "it sounds more distorted in the room" question has to do with harmonic density - that's a big part of what clipping and limiting do, right, they bring up harmonics that are nearly inaudible in a clean sound. So when you're in the room with a cranked amp, you're getting harmonic interaction from the sound bouncing all over the room, adding a complexity and richness that we associate with distortion. Put that same sound into 1 mic in front of the speaker, and you're not getting all the harmonic interaction that happens in real-time 3D space, you're mostly getting what comes out of the speaker cone and the 3 or 6 or 12 inches between the speaker and mic. Then you combine that with the "feel" aspects which we likewise associate with gain saturation, and which don't show up on the recording - sustain, sensitivity, the sensation of feeling like the guitar is playing itself, or that you're just pulling the notes out of the neck - and the recorded track often isn't as driven as you'd think.
Really like the bass cut on my G&L tribute doheny (jazzmaster). I ended up with the Quilter superblock UK. Gives some marshallish and voxish tones. Haven't used the headphone output, but the 1 watt setting is plenty in a small room for practice.
Forgive me I could not stay for the live chat I only had a brief moment away from work. Thanks for mentioning those other options. I'm one of those players who use the controls a lot but didn't need a tone control for each pickup. I prefer single coils and my local luthier suggested the bass cut. It might be that the particular Schaller pickups had a lot bass. The addition of the control made the guitar much more usable. Non destructive mods are always good to know.

Hey gentlemen. Hope the new project goes well. Been subscribed to the channel for a while. I really appreciate what you do. I think you have touched on non pedals a bit before, but I was wondering if you might be up for doing some episodes on some of the alternatives to pedals? E.g. I hear about people using old 4 track recorders as an alternate to overdrive. You can run through some synths for chorus or vibrato or envelope filters. There's also FX boxes like Roland sp404 etc. It would be great to get your take on this general subject.
For home use I tried software, all the plugins I could find. I did a deep dive into IR's etc. The best I got still sounded like a flatulent wasp in a tin and felt like listening to someone else taking the piss out of what I wanted the guitar to do. Blues Junior is what I currently us and I want to add an AC15 to that. If you need to be quiet I'd prefer a transistor amp to a modeller.
Why is it bizzare that their would be a pedal with a trs output?.. There are lots of pedals out there that have that feature for years!..Red Panda pedals,Chase Bliss etc..

I'm not a fan of the Dumble sound myself and i'm more interested to see you play the IR series of Friedman pre Amps (the IR-D sounds great on youtube, IRX and IRJ sound heavier) next the the Victory amp pedals, the Simplifier X and the Kingsley preamps. And next to those, in that Marshall realm, the UA Lion. As i commented long ago, these kind of digital solutions are phenomenal as "enablers" to make your Carlsbro 90s transistor amp with good speakers but poor sound into a great sounding thing if you use the fxloop return. 🙂
Show the folks between low wattage (lower headroom) dry vs higher wattage dry compared to wet. Sounds can be greatly different with headroom relation. Between wet and dry…also cool results with varying levels dry vs wet.

If recorded sound is weak/anemic less gain etc then I’m curious if you’re using only a close mic. Ihave to add a room mic always and blend them cuz my ears are between both mics. Puts the listener “in the room” :) 🤘🏻
It’s ok and quite fantastic to be paid. Understand the need for sincerity, but it’s established and you have the proverbial ‘street cred.’ Make your living friends.
The complication is a turn off. You trying to explain it is even worse. I’d suggest an educational manual that is written for hobbyists vs studio producers. I had it in the shopping cart, but decided against after this video.
Mick here. This is awesome! Back in the day, we’d buy it, maybe read the manual, twist the knobs and that would do it. If you feel confused, you have to teach yourself. It’s the only way. In any case, cheers!

I have an ES-135 with P100s. I had planned to swap them for P90s, but over time I decided I really liked those p100s for their clarity and character.

Changing the voltage doesn’t change the tone or headroom of the pedal, just the current draw, so any voltage from 9-24 dc is fine 👍

If you use the UA Enigmatic, get rid of the cab emulation and use the fxloop return of the Two-Rock, the Fryette Powerstage or the 50/50 Mesa 🙂
