  • Hello friends, a warm TPS welcome to our almost-weekly VCQ.
And so it came to pass, the Earth continued on another rotation around the sun. Clinging on to its surface for dear life we find the afflicted Daniel & Michael, still banging on about guitars, amps and pedals.
Erm, anyway… We're all here to hang out, ask better questions and be among likeminded humans. So please do be kind and civil, or Master Blaster BV will have you out of there.
And PLEASE SUBSCRIBE to the channel. It's totally free, just click the button. It helps.
You can buy TPS merch to support our efforts www.thatpedals...

I for one, am here for the whole package; the tech stuff, concepts, ideas & inspiration, but also the pseudo-social side where tangents, philosophy, banter, and love of music and art generally are akin to chatting to mates at a gig or rehearsal. It maybe ‘sad’ but TPS is a bit of a social lifeline to me - moving to Bristol 8 years ago (leaving behind long-standing bands & musical relationships), having children, then the covid mess, family & bandmates moving across the world… all feel a bit isolating & though I do have friends & musical projects here, TPS has become quite personal & important to me.

I watch every TPS episode - mostly because I enjoy listening to you two discuss pedals and guitars and amps and lawn mowers and things of that nature. On occasion you'll have an episode I'm really interested in - but mostly I just enjoy hanging out with you regardless of the topic. Love you guys! Looking forward to a fun 2025 - Cheers!

The conversation about the “new pedal day” videos not getting views was very interesting. How do the “challenge” videos do? I love the challenge videos because 1) we often see a variety of pedals and interesting ways to use them. 2) watching your different approaches is fascinating 3) watching your reactions to how the others approach is great fun. Love it all though! Thanks for being here for us!

My favourite episodes are the ones where you deep dive on a certain piece of gear, be it an amp, guitar or pedal. Im a big fan getting the most out of each bit of gear so its fun seeing your experience and mileage exploring all the tones in a particular amp etc. I loved the 'our guitars and gear' series.

I think I’ve watched every video you’ve made (some several times), having discovered you via Andertons during April 2020!).
I don’t think I’ve bought any specific kit off one of your videos but I have learnt so much and my rig is a reflection of everything you me taught me. Early on, the video’s about different types of pedals and how to use them together was really valuable (I.e. different types of drive or delay etc). I never understood delay before TPS and now I have 5 on the board!
I love when you dig into concepts and also when you explain why you’ve made certain choices (this is where the challenge vids excel).
Whatever videos you want to make I’ll watch them!

I do understand you have to be mindful of the stupid algorithms out of your control but i truly love those episodes and ive rewatchted them countless times! Hopefully you find a way to feed both ends of the beast and we are graced with more pedal episodes lol!! Just giving my 2 cents with much love!!

I’m rarely able to listen live, but I always listen after the fact. I’ve been a musician since 4th grade (I’m more or less Dan’s age now), but I had to quit playing acoustic (my main instrument) due to RSI a good 10 to 15 years ago. TPS was a big factor in my picking up electric guitar again, which I hadn’t played since high school- which was pre-internet, so I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. Now I’m playing weekly at a church, am active in a cover band, and am practicing with some amazing musicians building a new originals band. It was the ideas, concepts, and ways to approach music and sound that helped me more than the specific pedal comparisons or demos. That said, I enjoy all manor of TPS content from philosophy to tomfoolery. Thanks for 10 years and all the best to you for whatever direction you take things in 2025!

An idea for “chuck a few pedals on”-episodes:
Does it stack? Three random pedals from the closet that you test and try stacking in different orders.
And I totally understand that YT views (and algorithms) are something you need to think about.

Honestly, my fave is when you guys are playing more free or playing unique gear with ideas in mind... and the challenges that get you creative.
I like the straight pedal stuff too at times, but only if I'm interested in that pedal or that effect tbh. Edit: in terms of pedal videos, I'm more talking about the ones where you're running through 5ish new pedals. I do enjoy the pedal videos talking about a concept or even comparing different types of a certain group / style.
I'm still holding out hope for the Magnatone vs Magnatone type pedal video. And would love to see you visit more shops (or with more people) playing vintage/rare gear. ATB is still one of my fave videos y'all have ever done.

Yes on bass! I put a looper / drum machine pedal in front of the bass amp and muck about with a fretless bass to put down something to play guitar over. If I did want to spend the time to become a serious bass player, I think I would learn on a fretless - it sounds so cool.... or I imagine it would if I could play it worth a damn.

look, if I want to hear a pedal demo and TPS has played it, I will check the video before I buy it. But that's not why I watch TPS every week or why I watch the VCQ's. The reason TPS feels like a family is because you guys discuss concepts, context, the meaning of making music with people, connection.

I feel like many of us love the format and it would be a way to not mess with the TH-cam algorithm. I reckon it would be too much work for not getting views. Still, I‘d love to see the P‘n‘M return. ❤

Hi. Maybe you could do a show on how to record guitar sounds with more than an iPhone. I've been watching you for 2-3 years now and I've learned so much, and re-energized my love of playing. I know there are other channels that help with other topics - but you two do a great job of explaining things in understandable terms. Like, if I want to record myself using a Zoom recorder and a couple of mics, take video on an iPhone - marry those things up and edit. I think there are people who want to record themselves, have some vague idea of how to do it (like me), but get paralyzed choosing equipment or even getting started. Also, I don't mean a show on editing - I just mean I would like to get a recorder and mics for better audio, marry up with video, and publish on TH-cam - if for no other reason just to share with my friends. Again - I know it's not your typical content - but people like me who speak the same language as you - it might be easier for me to learn it from you guys than from a person who is a video professional - they're already out of my league. If that makes sense. Just an idea to throw into the hopper for consideration.
    Thanks! :--)

    Hi guys and girls,
The Equinox documentary was called Twang, Bang, Kerang and can be found on TH-cam. I was already heading in the direction of the guitar anyway but this documentary pushed me over the edge. I practically wore out the tape trying to get some of this stuff down. Hendrix was raw and primal, Donohue just beyond my comprehension at that point, and I'm sorry to say that what Hank Marvin and The Shads did in the 1960's went over my head in those early teenage years. I've since backtracked on that - a generation and more owes the idea of the guitar hero to Hank - another Geordie who changed the world. Andy Summers looked very young for a man already in his forties then - and reading the negative comments around YT on it, I don't think his rig sounds bad at all? If it's a Cornish rig, and I think it was, then they were famous for using the guts of the analog pedals within the system. Sure Dan will know? Regardless, it looks like a nightmare to programme, but it sounds great.
My abiding memory, though, is of the frankly (no pun intended) monstrous Frank Dunnery demonstrating legato and action with one massive hand crawling nimbly over the fretboard like a giant pink spider, and then a ferociously tight It Bites regarding 'Once Around The World' - both sections prompted a lifelong love of Frank's playing and writing, and It Bites - a very underrated band whose work is still a trip.
Not sure of your criteria for choosing guests but any chance you could get either Andy or Frank on? A lot of modern guitar (textured, ambient, chord choices, choice of effects) owes a debt to his work in The Police and he's still out there pushing and playing. As for Frank, he's a unique talent with a unique take on gear / guitars / music / etc. Would love to see you sit down and chat with them.
Keep up the good work - your channel is brilliant. Ignore the haters, keep doing what interests you and makes you happy. It seems to have worked so far! Brilliant, brilliant insights, playing, guests, chat, and engagement. Well done.

    Hi gents
Not relating to most recent show so hope im ok to post here.
Long term subscriber. I am trying to set up a two amp (dual mono, no stereo and not much 'wet' effect either) rig. I have a proper splitting device (JHS Active ABY) so polarity and ground loop should not be an issue. Currently rewatching your 2 amp show from Feb 24, but what I'm not sure of is how best to 'dial in'/EQ the sound, especially with overdrive, which I want from the amps. I find it either a bit too bright/ice picky, or if I dial back treble/presence to compensate for that, it is then a bit too nasal (is this mids?). Could you give a rough guide how to EQ and dial in so I might improve the base tone?
    Many thanks and best wishes
    Mark
PS the guitar I'm mainly using is also new to me so that is a factor, but I am using the controls on it too!

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  หลายเดือนก่อน

It’s entirely subjective Mark. For example Dan’s sound is always too treble/ice pick for me, and mine is too dull/ flat for him. So it really is a ‘to taste’ thing! One thing to try is setting the controls to the point of most change, ie where you hear a big jump in difference. Set it there!

Houston, we have a problem. If you listen to the audio we record, it’s loud, proud and clear. So we have an issue between with streaming and TH-cam. Joy.

Prrobably going to get a bit of kick back from this comment, but it is meant as constructive critiscism. I couldn't get through the whole 2 hours tonight, once you notice how Dan seems to spend most of the time staring at a phone, the whole 'only Real Amps, and wet / dry / wet setup is authentic' starts to grate on me.
Tonight the volume level was really low, and the discussions were hard to follow, which is something that should be easy to fix, after 10 years of doing it.
I know you guys don't want to get involved with digital stuff, which is really where all the innovations are happening these days, and I would like to challenge you to recreate a wet / dry / wet rig with something like the £150 Tonex One, which quite honestly can sound staggering.
3 pedals and 3 cabs should get you there, or somewhere close anyway.
Playing it at 100db might take a little more gear, but it might be a useful evolution on the shows format.
Sorry if it sounds negative, but it is something I have noticed over the last few q and a's, and once you spot it-it really winds you up.

It’s not negative, it is what it is. Volume should have been fine judging by our metering, be interested to hear from others - we’ll keep an eye on the comments. As for the digital/analogue and all that thing, ah, maybe. I’ve been saying this quite a bit recently - Mick here - but TPS is about most best, not least worst. The rest of the internet is obsessed with the latter so we’ll leave them to it. With respect. If it’s too irritating, the web is a big place. Cheers.

Why are all you modeler folks sooooo hell bent on trying to force your opinions on others? Can't you exist in a world with options and choices? Some people (possibly like yourself) like digital processed sounds while others like real amps. It's fine. Let people have their preferences.

Tonex One? Trying to parse your construction, but it is very difficult. Not sure what innovations you are trying to promote, but I think we prefer to do fun stuff, rather than meaningless challenges. If you could explain what I am missing here, is there a point?

    • @grimmmstudios2367
      @grimmmstudios2367 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@hoboroadie4623 The main point was how irritating it is to see a discussion where one of the guys appears to spend most of the 2 hours simply looking at a phone screen, while occasionally saying only real old valve amps and expensive self promoted pedals can get you the 'tone', nothing else comes close.
In the real world, most of us simply play for enjoyment, not profit, and therefore we need something that can work well at home volumes. I myself own numerous nice valve stuff, which needs expensive load boxes and digital IR stuff to allow the amps to shine - not too practical really for my use, so I chose to try out the Tonex platform to get something close. The most basic one is the Tonex One, and my 'challenge' if you can call it that, was just an idea where they could possibly try to create a rig which could recreate the holy TPS wet / dry setup, if there is such a thing .
I am not making a point about one avenue vs another - both exist, but it seems the TPS guys have set a line in the sand which they will not cross, I guess the show is useful to somebody who has an unlimited budget and a soundproof room, but to me at least, it is becoming a weird voyeur experience of watching 2 guys play at high volume through laptop speakers, while telling me that it is an experience I am missing.
The phenomenon of watching the top of somebodys head, while they appear distracted by a phone during a 'conversation', is not something I want to see recreated, as I said, it is meant as constructive criticism, and as the show is called 'that pedal show', exploring a pedal like the Tonex should not fall outside their brief, should it?
