19:40-19:47 - Dan is overcome with “the tone”
20:00-20:05 - A sudden urge of irresponsibility overtakes Dan. “I could probably buy this…” he ponders to himself
20:06-20:07- Dan begins to regain his mental faculties. “Well, it wouldn’t hurt to check the price.”
20:08 - Dan reads the price tag.
20:10 - Dan reads the price tag again.
20:12 - Dan reads the price tag again, hopelessly wishing the price has somehow lost a digit.
20:14 - Dan begins to work out what he would have to sell in order to afford “the tone”.
    20:19 - “I don’t _need_ a car… I could bicycle to work.”
20:35 - “I bet I could fit my whole family into one of those tiny houses. They’re all the rage nowadays…”
20:46 - Mick stops playing. Dan is suddenly snapped out of his tone coma.
    20:53 - “I’m not crying, you’re crying.”

21:00 - 21:03 A sudden urge of irresponsibility mixed with hopeful fancy overcomes Mick, he thinks "we surely it couldn't be too bad, let's check, maybe I..."
      21:03 - 21:05 "Blim-MEE, no, what?"
21:05 - 21:15 Mick ponders just how much he values his marriage.

I sat down to watch this with my 8 year old daughter in one of those “father/daughter/let’s learn about the joy of things in life” way. I expected her boredom threshold to be up at the 2 minute mark, but she lasted all the way to Mick’s exclamation of, “Sh*t!” after playing the ‘62. She looked up at me with her divine, soft blue eyes and said simply, “Daddy. I love That Pedal Show”. There was nothing for it, I looked back at her and said, “Yup, sweets. So do I”. What a great episode.

What a phenomenal episode, Chaps! I felt your pain and euphoria the whole way through. There is no doubt that playing a GOOD vintage guitar can be a transformative experience and to those who say that no guitar is worth the money some of the guitars in this episode fetch, I say, “If you have the money, GO FOR IT!” Heck... even if you don’t have all the money but can finance it without going bankrupt or losing your significant other, it’s worth it, as you will not only have an instrument you will love for a long time, but it will only appreciate in value.
While I’m primarily a Gretsch Duo Jet player (I adore Teles, too), I remember the first time I played an original early ‘60’s Strat. There was an immediate, aural, visceral feeling and I instantly understood what all the fuss was about. New guitars simply do not sound the same. This isn’t to say that new guitars cannot sound great... many do, but they will not sound like a 40-60 year old instrument. If I could poo money, I’d call ATB and buy that Surf Green Strat NOW, and I’m not a Strat guy.
As for Mick, my dear man-boy, buy that Strat! I’m sure you can work out some kind of deal and you will be so over the moon! Do it, Man!
I just wish ATB had a vintage Gretsch section. Ah, well...

Thank you. Just thank you. What a wonderful video. So much Insight, and beautifully delivered with Mr ATB. What a lesson in Vintage instruments. Your combined silence between playing was the biggest “tell” as to how much you were enjoying the process. Simply the best way to spend close to two hours without a guitar in my hands. Well done you legends. Best regards. A fan. 👌🏼

Hi guys, I'm so happy for you getting to enjoy all these amazing guitars and thankful for sharing it with us. Thanks also for putting all the energy into making such a spectacular show, it's a true joy to follow your natural conversations without the over-editing or constant cutting most other channels tend to prefer (for reasons I don't get at all). Makes it so much more pleasant and relaxing to watch you and your fine guests. Congrats on 200k subs! Dan, please invite Mike Vennart on the show🙏

It goes without saying that you guys have made some brilliant videos, but this was my favourite TPS of all time. Probably the best demo’s of vintage guitars I’ve ever seen. I’ve watched it in it’s entirety twice now and there will be many more views to come in the coming months. Thank you so much.

Mick and Dan, thank you for THE most inspirational guitar video on the internet. All of the vintage guitars you played were different from their modern day reissues but there seems to me that the most marked difference is in the Strats. No amount of tinkering with trem blocks, tone pots, saddles, pickups, etc will get you anywhere near the sound of that ‘62. Given the current cost of a Custom Shop strat I think it is a no-brainer.

Fellas, do you remember being 8 yearsold on Christmas eve? The excitment, the butterflies, the murderous anticipation? That how i feel when i watch this episode, i get that same feeling...I thought long and hard about this, im only less then 2 years into my guitar journey, and in 40 years of life on this planet, the only thing that ever gave me that adolescent excitement anything near Christmas eve 1989, is vintage guitars, or guitars in general, and i know im not the only 1...Best vintage guitar safari, ever recorded on youtube, GOOD JOB BOYZ!

My first semi-religious experience with a guitar was in 1990, when my father took me to a guitar store for the first time, thrilled that I'd finally taken up his instrument. I was 21 years old, and playing in my first band, as a keyboardist picking up guitar. I happened upon a Paul Reed Smith Artist model, which as I recall sold at that time for about $1500 USD, and I, beginning guitarist that I was, felt like the guitar could play itself. It just felt so *comfortable* , and to this day, I've never played a guitar that felt that *easy* to me. My father (who was a physician) offered to buy it for me, but I just couldn't let him spend so much money on me when I was a rank beginner. Instead, I ended up borrowing (eventually permanently borrowing) his 1980-ish Matsumoku-made Epiphone Emperor F, and he bought me an Ampeg VH-140C 2x12 stereo chorus combo amplifier for $650. I was scared of tube amps back then, having heard horror stories of their fragility.
When I think of what a 1990 Paul Reed Smith Artist Model would be worth today, I kick myself. My father could have easily afforded it, and it would have given him pride to buy it for me. Although the Ampeg is no longer my main amp, I still have it, and the following year, I purchased myself a new 1990 Rickenbacker 330 for $940 (minus $140 trade-in for the Bundy clarinet my mother gave me because my younger sister no longer played it) which is still my main guitar. My father passed away in 2002, and I ended up selling the Emperor F in 2012 for $650. Over the next few years, the market for Matsumoku Epiphones skyrocketed, much to my dismay. I've seen them listed for $2500 USD.

For Dan man its a close call for you between the LP gold-plated, but the jag man is your thing brother. Mic the very first strat you picked the 61 was it or 59, mate it melted in your hands! Price tag I know but what a lolly shop, take me there please by appointment. Damn good show old B and you both played exquisitely well, thank you

Oh boy, oh boy, boys - That was flippin’ EPIC!!! Have loved your show for quite a while now, but that was the bleedin’ dogs bollocks guys. Thank you so, so much. Truly fascinating in so many ways and really made me think again about whether the crazy prices for some of these vintage guitars are actually worth it after all, and not just smoke and mirrors. First, Mike seemed like a true gent and amazingly proud and knowledgeable (big thank you to him for allowing you to do this). However the thing this really emphasised, as you’ve said so many times before, is how something makes YOU feel is so, so important in what and how you then play. Biggest surprise for me was that gorgeous Jazz Master, which I’ve never been that keen on before; Dan’s playing in that first, low gain section was some of the most amazing I’ve ever heard him produce 👏🙌 and it didn’t sound at all brash like the ones you’ve played before. And as for you Mick, I was grinning and really feeling your overwhelming sense of joy playing that lovely, well worn Strat - it certainly made you play at your best (and I was already envious of your touch and feel before today!). If I won the Lottery or something it would genuinely make me very happy to see you delight in owning it or one similar. I know this was some time ago now (and this is turning into a bit of a gushing rant), but please, please try and do something along similar lines in the future. This really was a truly special TPS episode and a personal favourite 👍

Then I got the urge to drive downtown to the guitar store since I'm in the market for my first Telecaster only to be dissapointed by the poor stock. But at least I got to come home and live through you guys for the second half of the video. Who's jelly? Not me.

Re through neck construction and the Gibson Firebird. Rickebacker introduced this on the 400 Combo (forerunner of the 600 - 625 & 660 series of Petty /Campbell fame) already in 1956. The 4000 and later 4001 basses famously carries the same through neck, from 1957 and onwards.

Dear Dan & Mick; you played in this episode the guitar that started my insane fiesta red with rosewood board fetish. I have spent the morning converting pounds into Aussie dollars and contemplating every piece of financial gymnastics available.
