    Here's the thing, because of how big the gargantuan leviathan was, it's likely that if it were in the game it wouldn't be hostile to the player simply because we are too small a prey and not worth it instead it would probably hunt other leviathans and reefbacks

    • @TheLastBacon

      That is a fair point :) the effort of chasing the player wouldn't be worth the caloric intake.

    I have a theory involving the gargantuan fossil. Such a creature, as you said, would take up HALF of the playable area, right? So, maybe part of the reason the lost river is so toxic and briny is because of the slow decomposition of the body. Over the millions of years, the body would surely release a lot of gasses and other stuff like that, which could have contributed to the current state of the river!

    • @TheLastBacon

      Damn it someone said it already way before me
      But other than that if you think about it, the lost River could’ve been more Blue, Bright and lively, like the Giant tree Membrane where the manta’s thrive. Maybe that area managed to not get polluted and its self is like what the lost River could’ve been if the Gargantuans Rotting body wasn’t present in it.

    It's scary just to think of how large the predators on 4546B could be. As much as it was a developmental thing to keep the player in the area, the void seems to go on forever. With that much space to roam gigantic creatures could live, probably bioluminescent ones at that. I wish it could be something in the game, finding a massive creature bigger than the Sea Emperor or even the gargantuan fossil in the Lost River. Even with how big the Emperor is, it's disappointing to see she only swims in a circle and then dies. It would be so cool to see a massive creature swimming around in open water.

      Or check this allthatsinteresting.com/ocean-depth

    There is a chance that even larger super predators existed since there isnt much reason to evolve the thicc , bug-like armor plating . My idea is that the oceans of the planet got shallower and shallower as the volcano formed which made most of the large species either go and live in the void , somewhere around the mantle or go extinct. The chances of a meteor-like collision to cause huge water poisoning could also lead to the extinction of most of the titanic creatures. My theory on the heavily armored skeleton is that it was a plant (or plankton) eater who evolved its armor to protect itself and grew to larger sizes like what happened to the sauropods.
    Edit : this comment got super long . Good video

    • @TheLastBacon
      @TheLastBacon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +43

I love reading these tho, and watching videos like this because you can just *sea* so many people talking about how creatures could have been in those past times or how they evolved or lived. I have an idea: if the player goes too far deep into the void or too far away from the crater, a cutscene would play where the last creature, 2x the size of the skeleton we see in the video, can be seen/heard in the distance. If the player continues, the creature races over to the player, destroying their ship. However, to really punish the player, the player can live, just without their veichle. All alone, in the middle of pitch black ocean, with ghost leviathans swarming around them.

    It really intrigued me about these skeletons. Multiple PDAs from alive species like the sea dragon leviathan, stalker, and peeper tell us that they are some of the oldest living creatures on the planet. It is possible that these creatures lived with these huge leviathans. Ancient Subnautica probably was a even more terrifying place. The gargantuan skeleton really intrigued me. A lot of the alive species like the reefback state that they grow so large because “there is nothing large enough alive on this planet that can bite through this defense”. It gives me a feeling that these creatures died due to starvation. If these things got hungry, they would literally be a living extinction event. It probably wouldn’t hunt ghost leviathans or reefback a, or most of the species alive, because only a select few are actually extremely old species like the aforementioned 3. It probably hunted other super-leviathans
    Side note: I’m pretty sure the gargantuan skeleton was actually 1300 Feet Long, because the chart of its size. Showed us “402 Meters”, which is about 1300 feet.

    • @TheLastBacon
      @TheLastBacon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Because we have the pdas informing us that the geology of the area changed after the leviathan's death and we have thermal vents that have build up inside the skeleton I think we can probably assume that these creatures were alive way before the volcano was even emerging. Because of that the sea levels could have been very different across the area. A lack of a void due to lower sea levels could have meant a lot more life could be sustained by the planet due to access to light. Secondly, the largest creatures on our planet are often microbe eaters like whales as they can feed and not expend energy. Which, if true for the world of subnautica, means that even bigger creatures would be living out there and would be the prey for a hunter like the skeleton. You can't have a hunter with teeth like that eating microbial life or constantly eating much smaller creatures. The ancient world of subnautica would have been a terrifying place of giants.

    I'm assuming that last gargantuan fossil got in it's resting place after the volcano formed over time and engulfed it it magma, then the soil formed, the lost river cave formed, and it was eventually unearthed because the plants in the area kept using up the soil, then the herbivores ate the plants, then the ghost leviathans ate the herbivores which practically ended up being a long chain which kept removing the material from the area which is now the lost river and carrying it to the void over millions if not billions of years.....I don't remember if we know the date when the volcano erupted or not..but this is my guess
    maybe ghost leviathans weren't even around back then, maybe another migratory species carried all of that material out to unearth the skeleton

      I think you're right :) we don't know the date of the volcano, but based on what is currently available, I'd think the creature died and the skeleton eventually rose from the depths as the volcano formed.

I'm not scarred of things I can see, fight or at least run from. But the ocean floor is just too scary for me from now on.

      The second skeleton's shape looks like it could be similar to a prawn but with its heavy plating, it probably can't swim. There are types of fishes that bury themselves in the sand until the feel movement and the shoot up to bite down on it, a bit like the ice worm. However the thickness of the shell also makes that unlikely. The teeth show that it can eat meat but there's really no explanation on how it would get to that meat or how it could move. I also think that it is unlikely that it had limbs out the holes because of the lack of any skeletal remains of that type on an otherwise fairly complete skeleton.
      If I had to make a guess I would say that it might propel itself similar to how a lobster might but it would probably wait on the bottom, not buried, until something big enough swims over head so it can shoot up and clamp it's teeth down.

    Oooh boy, here we go. I have theories for all skeletons on this list. First of all, that little larva thing. I choose to call it that because that's what it looks like. The larva could literally just be in the baby stage, and the other armored one we see is an adult, i know people are going to pull the "But Neon! Bacon said the ribs and spine were different on the two fossils!" Card, and that's why i have another theory ready. So like i said, Theta could be some form of baby, and the ancient skeleton could be an adult. Here's why. Theta looks similar, and because the ancient skeleton is an adult then, the ribs on Theta would have fused together with the armor and it would begin to grow limbs under the armor, then they would pop out, leaving holes in the sides. The first two holes on Ancient could be for arms, and the rest for tiny legs that were like the Sandshark's but were more developed. Then the baby would, like us humans, lose its baby teeth and gain the bigger ones we see on ancient. It would also grow more eyeholes and eyes, just less developed ones, then its armor grew harder and more thick and polished. Now i don't play Subnautica for story and gameplay, i play it to research and study creatures, zones and biomes, and skeletons, so i know some shit. The second skeleton is harder. The void theory is actually quite nice, but, since the Ghost leviathans are.. well.. Ghosts, then what nutrients would the gigantic skeleton gain? Now, maybe its stomach could break down whatever solid material the Ghost leviathan would be made of. But as we see in the last cutscene of the game, the planet is much larger than the playable area we see, it most likely lives on the other side of the void, but goes there to mate and lay eggs, then it would go to the other side again to feed for billions of years. In that time the eggs hatch. Now the eggs would be massive, and so would the hatchlings. They were probably so huge, that they could feed on ghost leviathans that their less developed stomachs could break down, and when they were old and big enough, they would move to the other side of the void. The rest, we can't be sure about, hope you enjoyed! :-)

    • @TheLastBacon
      @TheLastBacon  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could definitely see the first theory being true :) my only potential issue with it is the fact that they purposely let us in on the fact that one of them is much older than the other - so you would think they are hinting at different stages of evolution within species on the planet.

    • @neonthedane4911
      @neonthedane4911 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheLastBacon Yeah, that other worm like thing could also be an older version of the reaper. The bottom of the skull (The chin) and the teeth, are almost the same. the holes could be for fins and increased movement, but since the fins have no bones, they are gone. Anything that didn't fit in my second theory? Just curious

    Sandsharks and bonesharks being supposed relatives yet having radically different biologies alone proves that Subnautica has a problem with a lack of consistent traits between species, even ones supposedly closely related. What if they made a DLC with these, but the DLC introduced a mode where these creatures exist somewhere, the first one would be called something like the Beta Leviathan, and you could find it in the research facility. the second one would be called the River Digger Leviathan, and you could find it in the lost river (duh). and the last one Is the gargantuan leviathan, you would find it in the crater edge, as it's too big to go anywhere else.
