The fact that Sega used this theme in Origins for blue spheres mode kind of validates that it was always a bonus stage theme. If it was the official Super Sonic theme, don't you think Sega would have given this theme back to Super Sonic in Origins?
While in my opinion the best Super Sonic theme is just not having one, I do think this is better than the other ones from the Genesis games, mostly due to it not being super repetitive and not looping after 5-10 seconds.
@@brickblock369 I honestly find it annoying having a shorter, more repetitive track play in a level whenever I'm using Super Sonic as opposed to just using the level's regular music. It's because of this that in games where I've gotten Super Sonic but still have a substantial amount of the game left (namely Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Mania), I usually wait until I'm near the end of a level to turn super, so I don't have to replace the stage music for as long (and also so I can cheese the bosses while still having the boss music play). I do appreciate that recent games (Lost World, Mania and Forces) have had longer tracks for Super Sonic, and Lost World's is probably the one I like the most, but as far as music goes, I think Generations did it best by simply not changing the music.

It's educated speculation, truthfully we don't know anything for sure until there's official word but this being an unused theme for Super Sonic is the best bet we have. Composition wise this song is pretty upbeat and fast, making it more of a jingle. Thematically that puts it at odds with the music that's usually chosen for stages and considering that aside from the changed stage tracks, all of the stage music including the S&K stages are present in the proto and they're more or less the same as the retail game so we can easily rule this out being for a game. The development of Sonic 3 post the split decision was completely straight and narrow, there is no cut content known of and there's really no reason to think that there was considering that this proto is basically just the retail game but lacking polish. The bonus and special stages aren't implemented but again I don't think this song fits thematically with any of those, with no other obvious place this song could've went then what could it have been used for other than Super Sonic? It's a bit slower tempo than the normal invincibility theme but definitely way more upbeat and jingle-like than many of the other tracks in the game. There was a unique Super Sonic theme in Sonic 2 so why wouldn't one have been done for Sonic 3? The *only* place I could see this song fitting in thematically in the game would be the short ending cutscene that plays post final boss before the credits, where sky sanctuary is played in the retail game. Perhaps it's just me but I think this song hits the story/emotional beats of that short sequence pretty well, not unlike the Sonic 2 end cutscene theme. Although I still feel this works better with Super Sonic. Even without confirmation to me this being the theme for Super Sonic makes sense, it fits and it also conveniently fixes the lack of a unique Super Sonic track that was always questionable in the final game. It's jumping the gun somewhat but I can see why a lot of people have come to this conclusion.

I could also see it working for Doomsday 2, although it's a little *too* upbeat for that. But yeah, I agree that chances are it was for either Super Sonic or (less likely) an ending scene.

You've got a point. We're still unsure how SEGA could negotiate a deal with the agency to get Taxman on it, especially considering they're so insistent on keeping it to themselves because of the issues surrounding the collaboration.
I'd say that the music wouldn't be that different. Their actual envolvement in Sonic 3 may have been much more limited than what many people believe (I've actually seen people claiming that MJ composed ALL tracks for S3). Most of it was completely rearranged by Sega's own composers, who probably did the bulk of the music anyway. Ice Cap, Launch Base and Sonic 3's ending theme are IMO the only tracks where their influence completely shines through. And while I like those tracks, it's probably true that they clash a bit with the rest of Sonic 3's musical style.
This blows Jun Senoue's new version completely out of the water. I can't understand why he didn't just put this into the game instead of his poorly instrumented piece that sounds like it came from Sonic 4.

Angel Basilio Rodriguez Bustos Jun Senoue was one of Sonic 3&K's composers, so it's very possible he wrote this track as well, which would explain any similarities it shares with any of his future work. Who knows? 🤷♂️🙂
S3 Complete gives you the option to play this when you go Super. It's been the super theme all along, just went unused. I guess they knew. And it's a bangin track too! Makes Super so much more fun
Very late reply, but if I recall correctly, Sonic 3 Complete's version was based on a MIDI-version of this very same theme appearing in the files of the Sonic & Knuckles collection on PC, much like how that collection uses the other early themes found in the beta. It went unused in that version of the game as well.

Imo tis should've been the hyper theme only, it'd make me feel much more rewarded for getting all of the super emeralds if this alone was the award, plus all the extra speed that hyper has over super, and supers theme should've been the one we had in s3&k.
hate to be the bearer of bad news for a lot of you, but this theme actually fits better over Sky Sanctuary, and considering the alternate music for 3 other zones, Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base, and that Sky Sanctuary isn't in this prototype, it's more probable that this is the old alternate music for there (seeing as CNZ, ICZ, and LBZ got replaced in later builds) and it certainly fits over SSZ
I feel like the tempo of this track is pretty close to the S2 and Mania versions. Perhaps increasing the tempo by 1 to 2 BPM might help improve the feel.
Bouncy Glow's Music Room Oh definitely, it doesn’t need that much of an increase, honestly alone it still does sound better than just a sped up stage theme or invincibility. And it does give off the feeling of being invincible.
So much people calling this "Super Sonic theme" while there is no proof about this song being really intended for Super Sonic, it's just a fan speculation. In prototype when using debug to get super box it's still invincibility theme used for Super Sonic, if this theme was really intended for Super Sonic it'd be used for it but it's not the case. In another hand i think this so called "Super" theme was originaly intended for Hidden Palace cutscene (and possibly Knuckles battle) because it's in 2E slot in S3 prototype sound test, but in final build it's replaced by Act 1 boss theme (S3 version) while Act 1 boss theme (S&K version) was already in slot 18 in prototype and remains in this same slot in final build but is no longer used (except by cheating in Hydrocity boss fights). So i think S3 version of Act 1 boss theme was at first intended for Hidden Palace cutscene and Knuckles battle like in S3C prototypes (it'd explain why it's so similar to S3 Knuckles theme), replacing this so called "Super" theme like other Michael Jackson songs replaced other prototype / PC songs, but this part of story isn't in S3 part 1 so it's probably why it's used for act 1 boss too instead slot 18 song probably to don't have a Michael Jackson music unused. This is only my own theory, but it seem very accurate imo.

@@conradojavier7547 The CD Christian Whitehead remake was available for consoles, but the Whitehead remakes of 1 and 2 weren't put on consoles because of a contract between Sega and Nintendo that made them release the next 3 Sonic games on their own consoles. I believe that is also why the versions of Sonic 1 and 2 that were eventually ported to consoles were not the Whitehead remakes, but instead other remakes by other companies.

You know it's funny cause we found the one in the pc version first and the Sonic 3 Complete version was based on that lower quality midi file. AND IT STILL SOUNDS BETTER! The people who made that hack are insane.
Right, so after listening to this I was inspired to play Sonic 3 AIR, and I forgot that I had that one online setting on. After spam crouching some dude returned the spam crouching and we literally hit it off and went on to beat the whole game. Unfortunately anything past the gravity swap boss doesn't show other players.. I beat the game and I know he did too. We used spam crouching and looking up as communication and to identify each other because S3AIR doesn't have usernames or chat. You're basically just walking around dark souls ghosts who all have the same sprites (the ones pulled from your game and mods). After I beat the game I checked in angel island to see if he was there and I did find SOMEONE who was spam crouching. I assumed it was him, said my goodbyes by spam crouching and I left.
It's interesting how there is seemingly no reason to think so, but everyone almost unanimously agrees that it was an unused Super/Hyper theme. I see why listening to it. I can't imagine it being a special/bonus stage theme or one of the competition stages.

S3 Complete gives you the option to play this when you go Super. It's been the super theme all along, just went unused.

Very late reply, but if I recall correctly, Sonic 3 Complete's version was based on a MIDI-version of this very same theme appearing in the files of the Sonic & Knuckles collection on PC, much like how that collection uses the other early themes found in the beta. It went unused in that version of the game as well.
In the fan game Sonic 3 Complete it is possible to set this as the super theme. Just in case any Sonic 3 Complete players wanna use this theme.

I don’t get what you mean. I’m not sure when it was added to Complete. If you mean how to use it, just go to options and find super music in the music settings.

wow this is really a good soundtrack for the super forms,It's great that this music was retouched for Sonic 3 AIR,It feels different from normal, super aggressive themes, with adrenaline, etc (that's what I feel)
but this is something calmer, with harmony, it can easily be a theme of a good ending

Since there are 6 competition stages in the stage select and only 5 ingame, it is extremely possible that this once intended for a sixth competition mode stage
if this was for a 6th comp. stage, then tell me the name of that competition stage.
Imo tis should've been the hyper theme only, it'd make me feel much more rewarded for getting all of the super emeralds if this alone was the award, plus all the extra speed that hyper has over super, and supers theme should've been the one we had in s3&k.

hate to be the bearer of bad news for a lot of you, but this theme actually fits better over Sky Sanctuary, and considering the alternate music for 3 other zones, Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base, and that Sky Sanctuary isn't in this prototype, it's more probable that this is the old alternate music for there (seeing as CNZ, ICZ, and LBZ got replaced in later builds) and it certainly fits over SSZ

I think what holds this theme back is how slow it is compared to how you’d imagine super sonic.
I feel like the tempo of this track is pretty close to the S2 and Mania versions. Perhaps increasing the tempo by 1 to 2 BPM might help improve the feel.
Bouncy Glow's Music Room Oh definitely, it doesn’t need that much of an increase, honestly alone it still does sound better than just a sped up stage theme or invincibility. And it does give off the feeling of being invincible.

So much people calling this "Super Sonic theme" while there is no proof about this song being really intended for Super Sonic, it's just a fan speculation. In prototype when using debug to get super box it's still invincibility theme used for Super Sonic, if this theme was really intended for Super Sonic it'd be used for it but it's not the case.
In another hand i think this so called "Super" theme was originaly intended for Hidden Palace cutscene (and possibly Knuckles battle) because it's in 2E slot in S3 prototype sound test, but in final build it's replaced by Act 1 boss theme (S3 version) while Act 1 boss theme (S&K version) was already in slot 18 in prototype and remains in this same slot in final build but is no longer used (except by cheating in Hydrocity boss fights). So i think S3 version of Act 1 boss theme was at first intended for Hidden Palace cutscene and Knuckles battle like in S3C prototypes (it'd explain why it's so similar to S3 Knuckles theme), replacing this so called "Super" theme like other Michael Jackson songs replaced other prototype / PC songs, but this part of story isn't in S3 part 1 so it's probably why it's used for act 1 boss too instead slot 18 song probably to don't have a Michael Jackson music unused. This is only my own theory, but it seem very accurate imo.
Anyone underwhelmed by the instrumentation of this possible Super Sonic theme? Well, I did my very own rendition which uses Sega Genesis instruments and follows the limitations! I even added extra melodies so that it won't sound empty. I'll appreciate it if you could check it out!

We Deserved a Sonic 3 & Knuckles Re-released without the Micheal Jackson Soundtrack in it.
Now that the once believed PC exclusive tracks are receiving much more positive reception, there really isn't a reason NOT to remaster Sonic 3 & Knuckles!

The CD Christian Whitehead remake was available for consoles, but the Whitehead remakes of 1 and 2 weren't put on consoles because of a contract between Sega and Nintendo that made them release the next 3 Sonic games on their own consoles. I believe that is also why the versions of Sonic 1 and 2 that were eventually ported to consoles were not the Whitehead remakes, but instead other remakes by other companies.

Right, so after listening to this I was inspired to play Sonic 3 AIR, and I forgot that I had that one online setting on.
After spam crouching some dude returned the spam crouching and we literally hit it off and went on to beat the whole game. Unfortunately anything past the gravity swap boss doesn't show other players.. I beat the game and I know he did too.
We used spam crouching and looking up as communication and to identify each other because S3AIR doesn't have usernames or chat. You're basically just walking around dark souls ghosts who all have the same sprites (the ones pulled from your game and mods).
After I beat the game I checked in angel island to see if he was there and I did find SOMEONE who was spam crouching. I assumed it was him, said my goodbyes by spam crouching and I left.

It's interesting how there is seemingly no reason to think so, but everyone almost unanimously agrees that it was an unused Super/Hyper theme. I see why listening to it. I can't imagine it being a special/bonus stage theme or one of the competition stages.
