It’s simply because they played that 76ers team, for the championship.
That season is judged by things that Lakers team had no control over, such as the regular season and who they played in the finals.

I grew up listening to Mike and the Mad Dog in the car with my Dad. They were a great team and it's a shame they ever broke up. Francesa was absolutely insufferable on his own.

3 - 86 Celtics
4 - 87 Lakers
5 - a couple teams could go here (2013 Heat, 2014 Spurs, 01 Lakers, 71 Bucks, etc.)
I think these are all teams that could compete and excel in any era.
Every team you listed was insanely good. I’d add the early 80s 76ers that mad dog listed to. AT, Dr J, Moses just to name a few. That team was full of dawgs
I gotta say, 40-1 at home by the Celtics in ‘85-‘86 is one of the most impressive records.

SAS & Skip are and still best friends both have admitted as much, everyone act like SAS kicked Skip off the show like he did with Max ... At the end of the day ESPN had to choose who to pay more and they chose SAS and Skip moved on to Fox Sports ... Honestly with the amount of money ESPN has, would it have been such a big deal to sign both to big contracts back in the day ... I mean look what they gave Joe Buck & Troy Aikman now 🤦

Considering the year before when Love missed the entire Finals and Kyrie missed most of it due to injuries, the fact the Cavs caught a break in 2016 evened things outs... and their punishment for winning was Durant went to Golden State and the Warriors became basically unstoppable to hand LeBron 2 more Finals losses.

It’s basically a “my generation vs yours” type of list. And because it’s sports, it easier to criticize cuz of how advance sports became over time.
You do a list for music and movies, most critics will have a lot of 60s, 70s, 80s movies on their lists over 90s-present, but since it’s more subjective, most people will be okay with it.

1971 Bucks faced 1 50 win team in playoffs, faced a 42 win team in the finals, beat a 48 win Lakers team without their best player Jerry West. Using opponents win % that was the 3rd easiest path to a title ever.

Honestly, these picks aren't bad at all. If you're a fan of Clayton Crowley's Making the Case series (highly recommend), you've already heard solid cases for three of these five, and the other two are all-time teams as well (that '82 Sixers team SWEPT the Showtime Lakers). I'd rather have someone like Russo who over-emphasizes the old-school teams than Smith straight up dismissing teams because "I wasn't born yet" as if basketball history doesn't matter if you weren't there to see it.
