MESSAGE TO THE HATERS - you all don't understand...being in a small truck living space wears on you. ALOT. Go out and live in a small Jeep camper or topper full-time for a decade and let know how you feel. Your back will be jacked, you don't always get good sleep, it becomes annoying to have to pack up your entire sleeping space every single time you move your truck, the setup time alone can sometimes be 30 minutes to an hour...do that 1000 times over 5 years and you'll get sick of it, you are constantly cooking outside rain/snow/high winds, you only dig catholes to use the restroom...sometimes in the rain and snow, showering is almost nonexistent. After a while, this will wear down even the most hearty individual. The reality is if you want to be on the road full-time for the rest of your life, you're going to need a rig that provides a better living experience. Phil can easily take a dirt bike with him to go mob trails and come back to camp to relax in his comfy Fuso with all the creature comforts of home. Can't wait to check out this rig in person!
absolutely true Brian, spoken from the 1% of people who have truly challenged their living space. It is fun for a while, and then it wears off and we want different things. The fact is, I knew this was coming from before I bought the Jeep. I knew eventually I'd get sick of living out of a mid size truck. It was fun while it lasted, this is the next step! Stoked to have your support brother and cant wait to show you!
You guys know the lifestyle so well being full timers. I’ve only lived that lifestyle for 4 to 6 months at a time overlanding in Africa so for me it was still just a vacation. Taking a trowel and a bog roll into the bush whenever the urge hits does wear on you after a while although I would say that I came home with strong thighs that helped with ski season. ‘Showering’ with a basin and a face cloth wears on you as well, there is nothing like a hot shower to lift one’s spirits. It seems pretty easy to live the outdoor based lifestyle when the weather is nice but having comfortable refuge during inclement weather makes a huge difference between enduring your nomadic lifestyle and enjoying it. There are a lot of incredible rigs of all sizes travelling the many trails around the world, if this one fits your desires, go for it.

That rig would hardly even notice the trailer.
Then you could keep your fun off roading going.

I've put a ton of miles behind the wheel of a Fuso - we had one that we used as a "chase" / pit truck for our desert racing program. Honestly bro, they suck - both on highway and off. Sure, it looks kinda cool, but there are wayyy better options out there for a light 4x4 livable style RV. I'd look around at different options..
Also a Fuso camper owner with over 8 years of off-roading. It's an excellent platform. It's not a rock crawler, it's a home on wheels. You'll like it.
@@rd4660 I don’t have a Fuso anymore. But you have to admit, it’s super awful on the highway. And since We spend most our miles on the highway, there are way better options out there
Every setup has strengths and weaknesses. Spacious and comfortable or small and living outside. Heavy and tall or light and nimble. You have to decide which are important to you, and those importances may change at any particular stage of life. Only you can decide your priorities. And if it does not work out you can sell it.
Do it! Those things for what they are, are very reliable engine wise, parts are pretty readily available and cheap. Inuswd to drive a commercial izuzu one for work and it never left me stranded
I love it! What an incredible rig. Life is too short to not be happy. None of us are guaranteed a tomorrow. I say get it! I mean, that smile on your face as you drive it like a bus driver is priceless.
The rv style really makes the inside warm and cozy,which is nice feeling when out on any adventure

What I wanted then and there. What you wanted for years. Wanted to build it for so long vs wanting to keep it for so long.
These are very insightful things to consider for everyone. Years ago Phil, you made a comment on Timmy's channel (Truck House Life) about 'why' also comes to mind. And in this context, why sell the Jeep build? Why go bigger with this truck? Does the big truck feel like something you want to keep for so long? How long? See yourself in the truck for 10+years? How important is the fast wheeling of the Jeep? Cost of operating the big truck vs jeep? Places you can go or can't with the big truck?
These questions are also what I'm going through for my own build out and there are really difficult trade offs. Hope you make a choice that keeps you happy for the next 10years. 2035 is not that far off.

thank you for your thoughtful comment on that section of my thought sharing! I am glad you received it that way. With this rig, I do see potentially owning it for the long haul. BUT my point was also that if I wanted to sell it in a year or two, I won't have to think about selling the years of work that went into building it!

I see the build as an important part of the journey, but not one that must be repeated. You created a unique vehicle with special abilities for that phase of your adventures.
Building or buying, each bring a set of trade-offs, just enjoy whatever choice is made.

Here is another idea! I was kinda on same path as you. Had a Sunrader 4x4, sold for good cash, kept a 1st gen tacoma for mobing with 80,s rtt, got a ram 3500 and 25’ desert fox toy hauler for motorcycles, kayaks, e-bikes and ton of space! Your Fuso is slow and ya cant carry anything! Trust me get a toy hauler big diesel truck and a first gen tacoma, best of both worlds!! My channel has vids of both my setups. You will thank me later

It will limit some of your adventures but how often do you use the hardcore offroad option

We think a commercial box is tougher than just about any factory RecreateVehicle.
Buy it, put a leveling suspension on it so you can park anywhere, rewire those slide switches into front-and-back three ways, and you're set. Tow an offroad buggy behind it so you can still go have fun. This will go 95% of the places you like to go, and you'll be 100% more comfortable doing it. PS, get one of those low-clearance warning buzzers so you don't rip the top off under a bridge.

2003, we built our ExpeditionVehicle with a rear entry.
We prefer the visual and visceral sense of openness.

With a side entry, the view is slammed against a cabinet or toilet... chopping a small space into niblets.
I drove a ten ton Fuso for six years, they are great vehicles, so easy to drive
Slides on anything would be a deal breaker for me. I have learned my lesson.
One of our caravan chums experimented with a factory RecreateVehicle (everybody else uses home-built HouseTrucks).

Her slide stuck on a Baja beach.
We removed the slide, inverted it, glued counter-top laminate to its floor, then shoved it back in.
One person can slide it in-n-out across the carpet.
We mounted latches to keep it in while moving, and a couple cheap jacks to stabilize it for camp.
Hard to give an opinion without knowing what you are investing. We went from living in a Jeep with an Ursa Minor for two years to building out a Ram 4500 4x4 with an ambo box marine grade on 41's with a huge off grid system. Our Ram will go up about anything our Jeep would clean if there is space for it (11ft. high and 8ft. wide) but not sure this will be as much of a beast as you like. Seriously consider what it has for an off grid system because I can't see you plugged in at an RV park. but if its the right price get a chain saw and you can broom it in a year if you don't love it. Been there so I understand the need for space. UPDATE: After seeing the walkthrough on Happy's channel it has a decent off grid system, you will be fine if its a decent deal.
I can talk myself into anything, whether good or bad decisions. 😂 That jeep is badass but if you’re living in it not much room. The jeep is a dream build for many, tough choice.

Yeah, I don't live full time in my ram. I stayed out of a topper for years. No privacy, it really stinks when it rains. I broke down and ended up getting a pop up truck camper. I don't have a problem with sponge baths, so I use a kiddy inflation pool for a tub on the floor, and a lugable loo for you know.
Remember why you got rid of the Dodgemahaul? Wasn't it too heavy when you got it stuck in the sand.
Yes I wanted something more offroad capable. Now I want a real home, it’s a complete life change! Haha and this thing won’t go where the Jeep went. It’s all a sacrifice one way or the other!

Great video! I would keep the Jeep and buy an offroad trailer to gain the space you need. Maybe sleep in the Jeep and cook, shower/toilet and chill/TV in the trailer. Just my 2 cents! Be well and God bless!

I get it Phil. It's nice to have the room. It's a natural progression into larger vehicle. Your possibilities are now changed. This rig is Base Camp. WHATEVER is strapped too or towed behind is the new "Mob Vehicles" And that has endless possibilities for all seasons.
1. Different steering column and wheel. 2. Add additional slide switches next to bed just for convenience. 3. Please name it ROACH COACH LOL. Imo. Enjoy it brother. Do you. Coz you could always build another jeep. Or a built out geo tracker type crawler to pull behind. Options are there.
Keep your emotions in check. The main drawback to me is the slides are in and you’re out. Not able to walk through would suck.
Really Nice rig, gives much more compfort and less crazy driving so a big win in my opinion, i think you would be happy with it if the outdoors is the priority and not the rock climbing with the Jeep. good luck!

For me this would be a no because of the slide outs and the lack of power I went with a truck camper and a dodge diesel for full time living so if something happens I can jump in the truck and go without having to put in the slides to go and when going off roading it will be more maintenance with the slides in the long run and I also have the grizzly mini in my camper but I do live here in Alaska with it and can see -60 here in Fairbainks but each is there own and if its something that really fits you then congrats on a cool rig and I’m not bashing it really its just wouldn’t be for me is all

Nice rig but it will need a fair bit of work to fix all those little things inside. Slides are a pain in the butt but I like the rig!!
I hope you bought it. I have a Host and love it. My friends Ben and Rebecca (Outliers Overland) have a Fuso and have talked about the Fuso/Host combo. It would be an awesome long term rig....
Your storage inside and out is amazing and the power of this rig will haul all of it. The amount of space you have for solar will be determined what you have on the roof (I know obvious) but more than what you had hopefully. Get us a roof shot. You can make this a WAY off grid rig with the potential you have already. Just like a plain pizza you always have to doctor it up a little to your liking. Your dog can lay in the bed right behind you when you are driving. Bonus if you can also tow! You can also put something on the roof (Portable solar panel or something to keep the truck batteries trickled. When I went from my winter truck camper to my summer one, game changer! NorthStar 850sc (A/C, toilet, hot water shower)! Sell you Jeep and if it is feasible and you can find an out as an overlander sale down the road go for it!

The space is fantastic, for sure, but the slides limit the mob factor. Get a big van with a Quigly conversion or a flatbed hard side pop-up.
Get it Phil! I'd mob that rig every day and twice on Sunday! The perks of sitting on the front axle is that tight turn radius.
As a former Qstoves user, I switched to Asmoke and it has been an absolute game-changer for my outdoor cooking experience. The precision temperature control of Asmoke is unparalleled, and it has allowed me to cook a wider variety of food with great ease. Also, the wood pellets come in various flavors, which is amazing as it adds a unique smoky taste to the food, something I never experienced with Qstoves. The convenience of the digital controller is another plus. It's also considerably lighter and smaller, making it perfect for my RV trips. Lastly, the app is very user-friendly and being able to monitor food temperature remotely is such a benefit. I would definitely recommend switching to Asmoke if you love outdoor cooking. #Asmoke.

My favorite lady!!! Man im with ya wanting more space, i totally get it. Much like Brian said, when you spend some time tiny, you really start missing things. For example, my elbow constantly hurting because I bang it everywhere in the 4runner. The shoulder pain from being cooped up in tiny sleeping spot the list goes on. Also you’re in a different place now and have different wants, and that all good too. It will definitely be a trade off, and you’re gonna have to come to terms with those and if you’re willing to accept them. I think a box build is highly ideal. I will give very strong caution about the slides, I am not a fan at all, of any type no matter the mechanism. I may be a bit bitter because the slide ultimately cause my RV we lived in to burn up so theres that. Ultimately you need to do what you truly want. And remember whatevers supposed to happen will happen. Just tuck in and let it happen, don’t fight to hard for or against it.

I get why you’re attracted to the extra space. Won’t you miss the superior mobility of the Gladiator? If so, maybe the Fuso has the capability to tow something like a Samurai. That way you can get off pavement, unhook the smaller rig and drive as far as it can reach to establish a basecamp. Then do exploratory day trips from there to properly experience the vicinity.
Can you control the slide-outs from the cab/bed end of the rig? That would be a great option in bad weather.

I have run through quite a few camper setups and I understand the dilemma. I understand your reasoning. Everything is a balance and unfortunately sometimes comes with lots of compromises. (space, off-road worthiness, weight, reliability, off grid ability, camper amenities and so on). After watching you for many years, it is my personal opinion the Host Camper Outback may not be the right vehicle. It seems you need to be able to check off the boxes for being able to travel off-road, stay off-grid ability and yet have the space to be comfortable. A couple ideas I am sure you have probably already thought about is towing a serious off-road trailer with stand up height inside, ground clearance, table, bath, comfortable bed and kitchen. You could tow with a awesome 4x4 of your choice and be able to unhook and go explore. The other option might be a full size extended van with a Quigley 4x4 and lift. Our van has about 10' behind the seats and 6' 4" of interior height. However no shower. I realize vans don't make the best off road vehicles either. Wish you the best, stay cool.
I'd get an enclosed trailer to tow behind the jeep and put a dirtbike and bathroom in it.

Hey. We all get older and our needs change. Getting older means looking farther down the that trail. You are extremely experienced at this lifestyle and if this is what you need to comfortably live long term, I say go for it. In life, there are trade-offs. I think the trade-off will benefit you in the long run.

That would be a mistake. Wanting a shower and toilet and real kitchen - that is legit. But you will give up a LOT of mobility vs what you have now. I think you can have your cake and eat it too - but not with this thing. If it will tip or simply won't make it somewhere your current rig will make it, its a step down. If it can go everywhere the Jeep goes, do everything the jeep does, but give you more space and a proper wet bath - cool.

I went from a 392 with a Alucab tent to a Sprinter Van. Everyday I miss not being able to go to the places the jeep could go. Go slow and be carful before you jump into this.

@@Down2Mob Not full time but 2 to 3 months at a time. The only time I don't miss the jeep and tent is the winter, when it's cold, or any time it rains for an extended time. last month I was in Canada and it rained for 4 days straight. It was still hard to be in the van that long, but better than a tent.

Get the rig, it is very nice! If you want to wheel, get a Roxor as a tow behind for on site mobbing! You will not regret it!
I think you would be better off with a truck camper. That Fuso seems to be pretty gutless. A truck camper on a modern diesel would be better in every way except interior space but they have all of the same amenities. I have a ‘01 Bigfoot camper on a 7.3 powerstroke truck and love it. A real bathroom on board is a game changer.

Mitsubishi engineered their truck primarily for in-city pickup and delivery.
For stop-n-go in-town, little HP is adequate.

Used for back-country camping, its purpose is similar to its design.
On interstate freeways, windage has a vote... that little four-banger needs to push a lot of air out of the way.

We built our ExpeditionVehicle on a 1996 Ford CF8000 commercial truck.
Cummins 8.3, Allison 3060 automatic, locking axle.

With all that Cummins torque, we still prefer rustic rural two-lane past farm-stands and horses chasing through fields.
Phil..if you’re truly looking for an off road rig, that’s a pretty sweet setup..there is always give and take. If you have the chance and want to build out another vehicle..go buy a used H1 hummer. If off road ready and will give plenty of build options..peace!!

The older we get we need to increase our comforts. If you haven't rolled your Jeep, you're not as radical as you think you are and if this rig will get you to the places that stimulate you're brain? I say go for it!
