He was so young when I started following him. He would drop the best mashups and covers on SoundCloud and his younger voice had crazy range. Did get to see him perform last year on a small venue stage. Same stage I first seen Ari Lennox and others perform first. What I like about Durand is that he seems to still enjoy what he's doing. When artist start trying to be mega stars, they get anxious and wacky. Durand is going self made crowd funded route. I see a few artist do this. What some don't grasp is how huge these artist are internationally too. As long as they are putting out the music in a healthy creative space, they don't need to be Prince and MJ. They don't need that ick and witchery to be iconic. We would love to see him glow up, singing for Madam President, big stages and all, but again... sometimes it's the artist that doesn't want to be slave to that machine that ultimately destroyed our greatest artists.
I don't think he wants to lean into the Prince influence because he doesn't want people to look at him and see Prince. I think he is wanting to find identity outside of and separate from his influences, hence the inconsistency. Also, I don't know how I feel about " we need to see him naked more".... if he were a woman, we would say that statement was predatory. Especially if it was a man saying it. In addition, I think he wants his talent at the forefront and not his sexuality. We already have enough oversexualization in the music industry. I do agree, however, that he does need to find a theme and stick to it and he does need to find focus. Right now, it's giving jack of trades, master of none. I think once he finds purpose and turns that into focus, he will be unstoppable. Clothed or not❤
The clothes look more like costumes instead of "looks." I feel like they look at female artists and try to give that, but it doesn't work. Androgynous looks would be way better than this showgirl look.
