Lindholm doesn't have to give up any money or term to reduce the risk. All he has to do is accept a structure where the team has at least one of the two options of trading him or buying him out in the final 3 years.
Actually looking at the aforementioned Huberdeau, Kadri, Weegar contracts, Calgary has a good precedent to show to Lindholm. Lindholm doesn't have to give up any money or term to reduce the risk. All he has to do is accept a structure where the team has at least one of the two options of trading him or buying him out in the final 3 years.
Actually looking at the aforementioned Huberdeau, Kadri, Weegar contracts, Calgary has a good precedent to show to Lindholm. In the final couple years it is workable to trade Huberdeau, and for Kadri/Weegar it's even better with trade and buyout both on the table. These are not the Tyler Seguin deal.

I have been married for over 11 years and my wife and I stopped wearing our rings a couple years ago. We had to get them resized, got them resized and just never really put them back on. I know that's not the same as losing one, but eh, doesn't really bother us.

Most, if not all, standard employment contracts are "at-will," which means your employer can terminate your employment at any time for any reason, except an illegal one of course, or for no reason, without incurring legal liability.
In the world of professional sports I am sure there are an abundance of clauses and contracts with stipulations that make this not possible.

Lindholm is a center. Nylander isnt. Plus lindholm got some selke votes meaning that he has value of being a two way player so his point totals dont fully constitute his full value.
