- Great Basin National Park is beautiful in the fall. The campgrounds are empty and the crowds are gone. This week we find a choice camping spot at Upper Lehman Creek Campground, hike to the Ancient Bristlecone Pines, and then drive 400 miles to the Eastern Sierra to take in the fall color. We also experience our first mouse and demonstrate a product Dometic makes to cover the vent louvres on the outside of our van.

There’s no place like home-in the Sierra. We were up at Rock Creek at the same time as you and were able to see the lovely aspen too. Rush Creek on the June Loop was beautiful. Stay safe and take care. ✌️

I love this area as well. The music was a great choice it helps bring back memories. Fyi - in the fall you can collect pinion nuts at Great Basin. When we were there I video taped two flocks of wild turkeys crossing the road to roost in the pine trees. That night we camped the temperature at the top campground dropped to 18 degrees, my husband called the no vote we stayed below where you camped. I love the Sierra Nevada mountains too.

Who knew there was a glacier in the desert? We love Great Basin NP. So glad you got a spot. We were there late July and were lucky enough to get the very last spot.
It was a great campsite. I think it was closed within days of us leaving. In July it must be a great spot to get out of the desert heat.

Beautiful video. I also love the eastern Sierras. We were there in August. We stayed at Brown's Owens River campground and did some fishing. I want to go up there in the fall sometime to see the beautiful colors.

What is the wait time on your PW? Someone just told me that they ordered an Ascent and won't get it until Spring of 2022!
@@FromShetoMe What!!? not until Spring of 2022? hmmm, will have to check with Doug at Pleasure-way about that. I think it might be not until Spring of 2021. Before the pandemic, the wait time was about 5 months. After the pandemic, the wait time is around 8 months. We placed an order for out 2021.5 OnTour 2.0 in early October 2020. With the about 8 months wait time, Doug said we are looking at around May or June of 2021. It takes about 6 weeks to finish building one Pleasure-Way RV. There are more orders for the shorter chassis like the OnTour 2.0 and the Ascent.

@@FromShetoMe I know last year there was also a short supply of Mercedes chassis because Amazon bought so many. This year I think it might be because of the high demand on RVs. Did you know that You and John helped us decide to go with the Ford gas chassis? We like both the Ascent and the OnTour. But when we saw John put in regular gas to your diesel Mercedes engine, we realized we can easily make the same mistake. Talk about learning from you through your experiences. Thank you the lesson!!

Loved It. We headed to the Great Basin a few years ago but stopped first at the Ruby Mountains and couldn't pull ourselves away in time to make it to the park. Many years ago we spent part of a summer in the Owens Valley for our Hydrology studies and my study area was Convict Creek and my husbands was McGee Creek, It brought back some fun times and happy memories! Lovely video!
I'm glad you mentioned the Ruby Mountains because we drove past a year ago and I wondered what they were like. We'll add to our list.
I always enjoyed my geology field trips to the Owens Valley but never got to spend a whole summer there. I'm making up for it now.

We have been following your channel since June of 19, and surprised at how often we have crossed paths near or at the same time. We we’re visiting my sister and nephew in Glenwood Canyon from the 4th of October until relocating to Lower Lehman Creek in Great Basin NP on 10/8. Following that we headed to Mammoth on 10/12 and then to Convict Lake from 10/12 -10/17. As we traveled this summer it appeared that each time we had left one location you two would post an episode from the exact location 1-2 weeks later.
Great Basin was an unexpected surprise for us since it reminded us of our beloved Eastern Sierra Nevada camping locations.

That's funny. As much time as we spend in the Sierra, I'm sure one of these days we will cross paths.
If you return again to GBNP in fall make sure you take the drives up the dirt roads to all the other off grid campsites and hiking trailheads like Eagle Point, Lexington Arch etc. Though high clearance vehicles were recommended, the roads were very well groomed with two wheel drive vans like yours at most trailheads. The pit toilets at these locations were cleaner than most bathrooms we’ve used in RV parks and the fall color was extremely brilliant with Quaking Aspens, several Willow varieties, Water Birch’s, Rocky Mountain Maples plus the Rabbit brush in full bloom. What made it so spectacular to me was that these deciduous groves were in the mist of Ponderosa, Limber and Pinion Pines, Utah and Rocky Mountain Junipers, White and Douglas Firs along with Engelmann Spruce.
I don’t recall ever seeing all of these varieties of trees coexisting on the same slopes.
I am quite confident that you two would bring this to life for so many with your photographic skills.

Thank you for this colorful fall video. - These (Dometic/Thetford) fridge vent covers came with all of my three trailers and with my van, as long as there is an absorption fridge. I put them on a) when I drive in heavy rain so that no or hardly any rain can get into that part; b) when I hibernate the van to avoid any dirt being blown in; c) when I travel at temperatures below approx. 5° C. There are, of course, different vent covers, depending on which brand or make you have. Greetings from Bavaria, Germany.
I now can't even get them from the UK. I finally contacted Dometic. They said I'd have to order through a dealer in Florida! That company has a serious problem with customer service. I think I'll just spray paint the short one black and call it a day.
@@FromShetoMe Since you now have a compressor fridge -- why do you still need the external vents?
@@johnnooncaster7653 The fridge still needs to vent, like your home fridge which vents through the front. But we certainly don't need as much as we now have. I might use some reflectix to cover the area during the colder months but I don't want to trap heat in there in the warmer months.

Great Basin National Park is awesome and though small campgrounds, they are wonderful and not crowded. I stayed in the lower Lehman campground and the stream was there too. Thanks for the review and continued safe travels.

Thanks. I don't want to oversell Crowley Lake but the good cell coverage and cheap price, along with being so close to great trailheads, makes it ideal.

Thank you for sharing your adventures. The higher elevation videos are awsome. I would never feel comfortable to drive my '92 Ford Econoline van in those places. It's in good condition but it's a southern van for a southeastern southern lady.
I know what you mean. I think back to quite a few sketchy adventures I had in my 1968 VW squareback. Ignorance was bliss.

After what seemed like waiting forever, we picked up our new class B Coachmen Beyond. We drove it home from the dealer, stocked it and headed out the very next day for a 4300 mile journey. We traveled from SW Florida up the east coast to the Pocono mountains of Pennsylvania and back down the spine of the Appalachian mountains. We literally experienced all 4 seasons during our trip, from 90 degree Florida heat and humidity to freezing cold, ice and snow in the Great Smoky Mountains. We prepared for months, bought and stocked a little too much, but got it 90% right. We boon-docked, mooch-docked, and camped out ocean-front at a national seashore (via ferry), and stayed lakeside watching the sun set. We thought about all of your fantastic journeys in Utah and the Sierra’s while we too were enjoying life and feeling a new beginning. You have truly inspired us and we cannot thank you enough for all you have done. Our next journey is in a few weeks - heading to the Southwest (AZ, CA). Maybe we’ll cross paths someday. We would love to thank you in person and get some tips on where to find some of those gorgeous sites you show in your videos. Love it! love it! love it! Thanks again, Rich and Cindy.

I just finished a 7,000 mile trip out to Oregon and for the first time was able to really follow some of the coastline on my way back. I came down Hwy 101 from Newport, OR and ended up in Pismo Beach, CA . I was not sure how CA1 would be for our LTV Unity so stayed with Hwy 101. A wonderful ride and breathtaking views. I wanted to get over to the other side of the Sierra National Forest but could not see a good way to do it in the time I had as I was headed back to FL but we will certainly put Crowley Lake on our list. I did get a chance to stay at Indian Cove in Joshua Tree and it was really nice at this time of year. Clear and crisp even though there was a pretty good size fire over near LA blowing smoke to the east. Enjoyed this video a lot and will go back through some of your others for our long journey next year. KEEP SAFE!

Crowley is a good base camp but lots of prettier camping in the area. Convict Lake being one of those.

Have you ever gone up to the Big Pine recreation area? We stopped on the way back from Silver Lake over 4th of July and enjoyed having lunch there . Thanks for taking us along on your adventures. Now my wife will finally go to Great Basin National Park , a place I've been trying to go to for years . Incidentally, I suggested to you that you put that bubble insulation behind the fridge. It still might be worth a try especially when a cold wind comes up. The ventilation from the top and bottom of the fridge should keep it working just fine. The companies like Advanced RV and Humble Roads don't use outside vents.
Good idea. I'll do that for winter travel. Have lots in the garage I can cut up.
If you are talking about the campground at 395/168 intersection, I didn't know that's what it was called. Stayed their back in the early 1970's on a geology field trip. Haven't stopped since.
@@FromShetoMe I'm talking about the recreation area up in the Sierras along Big Pine creek. The trailhead for the Palisades Glacier is up there. It's a heck of a climb and a white knuckle ride down.
@@stanw909 I've hiked only part way up to the Glacier, past the Lon Chaney cabin. Haven't been back to that area since the fire burned down the resort. Many fond memories but sounds like we should go back. Thanks.
I would never want to stay at the Clown Motel...creepy! We use Cab Fresh and an electronic rodent repellent and we haven’t had a problem in over 2 years...hope you got yours worked out. ❤️Thanks for the great info and for taking us along. (Jane in SC)
I laugh at some of the strange things we see on our travels...like the Clown Motel. I've also heard mice don't like moth balls.

@@stephenbeck4636 Because of Covid she has had to change things up a bit but her travels are amazing! She had been stuck in Argentina and if you go back and watch that series, it was kind of a harrowing story of her getting out of the country at the beginning of the lock downs.
As fellow PW owners( XLTD), we look forward to your videos each week as we approach retirement next year. We love the easy going nature of your content and how you highlight your time together, no matter the destination. Your music selection is great. I downloaded HOMESICK to my playlist and envision you and John holding hands when I listen to it. A small nit to pick if I may...the video quality( not the content) is not quite up there with some channels, quite blocky especially moving shots. Maybe it is exaggerated on our 106 inch screen.
Thanks. Yes, the larger screens can be a challenge. Make sure that you are watching it in 1080p rather than 720 or smaller. The big channels film in 4k which require HUGE amounts of storage. I would love to get there some day but it will have to wait until I improve my skills.

DEBBY & JOHN hello, pretty aspen area, but how did your ‘friend “ get in ?, I have ALWAYS had better luck, with glue strips, I have a photo, of one I caught, & wondered how it “LOST WEIGHT “, what happened was that mouse was so SMALL. & had a baby, which is what I saw But NEVER EVER SAW THIS TYPE before ,,, dark grey, virtually no fur . How do you keep your bicycles secured from theft when you go off hiking?
We just lock them up with a high quality lock. All we can do is try to deter or slow down a thief. Not much more we can do.
