The rifle is a Winchester Model 1873, a beautiful and popular rifle then and now. Winchester still makes the rifle, although the gun is made by Miroku in Japan. Uberti, an Italian gunmaker, also makes a popular replica of the famous lever action. Some people say the Winchester 1873 was the AR-15 of its day. The gun was issued to military troops and was popular amongst the civilians. A movie was made of the gun, "Winchester 1873", starring Jimmu Stewart

Here is additional information about the oldest living (non-clonal) tree in the world. This off the top of my head, without doing any research. I lied, just after typing that sentence I looked the situation up. In 1964 the Methuselah Tree was 4,793, years old and located in the White Mountains, on the Inyo National Forest in California. The Prometheus Tree was aged at 4,862 years old in 1964 and located on what was then the Humboldt National Forest. It is now in Great Basin National Park. That means old Prometheus was 69 years older at the time. It was a true tragedy this happened. A researcher, a PhD candidate, was researching the tree and his increment borer got stuck in the tree. These borers take a core sample that is removed from the center of the borer. The U.S. Forest Service and the researcher did not think tree was that old so they decided to cut the tree down to retrieve the borer. They were stunned when they realized what happened. The story was not widely publicized so as far as most people knew Methuselah had always been the oldest pine tree.
Unbeknownst to anyone until 2013, there was a tree older than Methuselah and Prometheus during all of this. In 2013 someone at the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research on the campus of the University of Arizona began to analyze some tree ring cores that were collected in the 1920's by the founder of modern "Dendrochronology," A.E. Douglass. The cores revealed a tree that was older than known at the time. I'm not aware of any name given it but it is now 5,066 years old. It was 5,010 years old in 1964, making it 148 years older than Prometheus and 161 years older than Methuselah that year.
I worked on 4 national forests in 4 different states during my U.S. Forest Service career, the last 10 on the Inyo National Forest, the home of the Methuselah and the "new" oldest tree. The location of both is highly guarded on that forest. As a USFS employee I could not get the location of either. My work involved coring more than 100 trees per year, so the increment borer is very familiar to me. This is a long story, but for a guy like me who likes trees, it is fascinating.
It's fascinating for a person like me who just likes trees, too. I've been to the White Mts. in Cal. (visited Mono Lake several times and Death Valley) and up the road where the Bristlecone Pines are located and took some pictures of some of them. I knew about Methuselah but didn't search for it as I knew that I wouldn't know which one it was even if I found it. This was in the 1990's. Thanks for the history, very interesting.

Just within the past year there has been an interesting account of these ancient trees and the tree ring dating of them in "The New Yorker" magazine. The author of the article hiked in the area where most of the likely oldest bristlecone pines are growing in the mountains. It is amazing how tenacious those trees are in a harsh environment.

Love those Darn Tough socks! Not cheap, but worth it if you hike a lot. The ones I own are Merino wool and you can wear them multiple days in a row without an odor. Also lifetime wear guarantee.
@12:49 --- When you see a USGS marker like that with an arrow and the word "reference" stamped on it, please follow the arrow (for usually a short distance) and you will find the MAIN marker. It may have useful information on it -- it will certainly be of interest to a lot of us.

We hate "Spoondockers" ( people who camp so close you feel like they're spooning with you ). Why do they always have to camp so close to you when there are so many other empty spots?

13.000 feet! I hope people appreciate what good shape you have to be in to hike up that high. I’ve only been that high once in my life, when I was 13, and I was sucking wind then at that altitude!
Last time I hiked to 13,000 I was in my 20's
I should stated it was Wheeler Peak...... but Wheeler Peak NM.
I went there last year and there was a tiny squirrel seeking handouts. Really improbable because there's nothing else for a squirrel to eat at the top of that mountain! I left a little bottle of Boost oxygen in that mailbox. I had brought it because I was 65 and didn't quite have the confidence to think I could do that hike without maybe getting altitude sickness.
Great job. I’m still hiking and climbing at 66. Hope I have a few more years. Lost my travel partner so I’m not sure it’s doable. Keep up the good work.
Congratulations to you for hiking it at age 65! I hiked it in 1990 at age 35 and met my future husband on the trail. We hiked it again on our 10 year anniversary. You motivate me to try it again now that I just turned 65! Will never forget the surreal view from that peak. Celebrate your huge accomplishment!

Wonderhussy! Congrats on your summit of Wheeler! I see you found my sticker, it must have been well placed haha. I had camped below Johnson lake the previous night and walked the Ridgeline across baker peak to Wheeler, that was my last full day on the Basin and Range Trail, ended August 6th after 67 days. I'm hoping to release some videos of the adventure later this fall.
Bummer I didn't run into you out there, or in any of the other towns from your recent videos... Austin, Eureka etc. I was in many of those towns this summer for resupply along my hiking route as well!

Great report. I'm riding my motorcycle there in two weeks for a few nights camping. You have inspired me to try Wheeler Peak. Will also be staying at the Hotel Nevada, the Mizpah Hotel, and trying some of that Basil Hayden stuff. So this will be a Wonderhussy inspired adventure for me. Keep up the fantastic videos.

Its a cool park we went there in 2017 when we set out our full time rv living adventure, the road to the top was closed in June due to heavy snowfall that winter,so thanks for sharing the view from the top Sarah, like you we really like the Winchester gun ,and the cave was not too impressive it was torn up by people before the park service got it,the coolest living cave is kartchner caverns in Benson AZ if you haven't seen it Go😃✌
That's a fantastic hike. I have climbed it and it certainly wasn't as difficult as some it was gorgeous. I am pleased you shared your experiences as well as many others. I think I have been to at least 15 of the places you have been to including Namibia! Keep having fun.

Love our Darn Tough socks…..worth every cent since they replace them if you wear them out! There are plenty of things to see and old ruins and lots of great hiking….there is an old cable car above Johnson Lake. Much more than just the cave, even though it is beautiful! Late September sometimes a bit later the aspen are incredible with their golden colors!

Been there twice, first time I was much younger and made it to the glacier and the bristlecones, Second time across Nevada by Hwy 50 on Motorcycle. One of the best places for nighttime sky.

I thought I was the only one that played that game. I'll tell you the older I get and tireder I am at the end of a hike the price goes up. At 64 I'm in the Million dollar range.
At 64 also and with two titanium knees I would need more $$$$$ for my doctors just so they wouldn't sue me.
Hike on, I’m 77 and have been forced to shorten long distance hiking to 3 day, 2 nights.

@@roncross1945 Sucks getting old, just 2 years ago you use to do what a 20 year did. Now at 77 you can only do what a 30 year old does.
Beautiful place with very few visitors. Wheeler Peak also has a small glacier with runoff flowing into a pretty alpine lake.
You would be so much fun to hike with.Great work , keep it up!
Nevada is great for places like this. Out in the middle of now where rise tall mountains with awesome ecosystems divided by 20 to 40 miles of high desert . When I was at Wheeler there was a big Black Turkey in the middle of the road .
(the oldest stump)...Because people will carve, sign, tag, graffiti, and leave litter near "the stump"....

Gosh darn, another near encounter. Just passed through the park a few days ago. Too hot & smokey to hike, so was looking forward to some cool cave time... until I saw the closed sign...wah, wah, wah.
Clonal. Trees sprout from the roots of another. Same species.
Also, I believe Wheeler Peak is the tallest free-standing mountain in Nevada that doesn’t share a border with another state. There is another peak that’s slightly taller, but part of it lies within California.
Beginning at about the 22:45 mark while she's describing losing part of her gear there are some good views of the peak over her right shoulder.
Totally new to me educational info about the trees. Thanks for broadening my knowledge.

I've been there! Went hike to bristle cone pine grove, did NOT tour the cave though. Very nice park, liked they're weren't many visitors there.
Lehman Caves are awesome.

Great video Sarah Jane and very nice views. Thanks for posting. I went to Bristlecone Forest in the White Mountains of Inyo in 1987 in one a bike race they're called The Plum line down hill! That s*** was crazy! I can barely breathe at 12000 feet elevation then I shot down that mountain, 7000 feet downhill in 7 Mile. Look at my picture I am wearing the shirt I won! 32 years ago!

Darn Tough socks are guaranteed for life. If you get a hole in one any place that sells them will give you a replacement pair for free. Warning: they are about $20 per pair. Might be able to find some for $15 at some outfitters. Socks of choice for most serious hikers.
The hike to the Glacier is much easier and very scenic.

1:08 The Basin and Range is full of horsts and grabens. They usually keep to themselves and hardly ever kill or eat anyone. Still, be careful and stay safe out there.

I went to Great Basin NP in 2017. It’s easily the most remote National park I’ve ever been to. I took a tour of the Lehman caves. I’m guessing they are still closed.
