It's a grey area. It is a gift in a manner of speaking. In some cases they get a special ring made that suits that woman's taste, so then the question becomes what are they going to do with it if they get it back? And even if it's a fairly generic ring, does the next woman you're dating actually want to use the ring that you got for another woman? Psychologically it's weird...
If it's within a short enough period of time and the jeweler will take it back, then absolutely it should go back to the man to be returned for the money. I'm not sure that most Jewelers will take those things back though. I think this woman's face says it all though.
