we still have some of these style of engine working here in Australia, they are a locally built EMD units that are basically a SD40 with a F style nose and F45ish body.......they sound incredible!
The prototypes, which ended active service on the BN Metra, served Chicago's Western Suburbs (now BNSF Metra). They also had Mars lights which were used quite a bit in foggy and snowy conditions.
I got a ride behind one of the IC E9s on the executive train west out of Waterloo Iowa back in the 90s. I have photos of them hitching up from the inside of the theater car.
I have the 9915 and 9904. They did blow it on the beacon. It should be on a three point stand as I understand it. In addition, I had to take Tamiya clear orange and paint the beacon. They missed the wind deflectors as well. Great video, James. Happy Thanksgiving. Cheers from Tomball, TX
My only criticism is that the mufflers have a solid pipe coming out of them and it's not just Rapido, but all the manufacturers do this. At least Rapido hollow out the horns and they look excellent. Great review, Jersey Bill
😍 Beautiful Burlington Northern E9! Beats out the old Life-Like F40 Burlington Northern 9987. 🚅 Burlington Northern 9915, Metra Hi-level, Metra Hi-level, Metra Hi-level, Metra Hi-level, Metra Hi-level, Metra Hi-level
These locomotives were not equipped with dynamic brakes. Rapido just left that function. I removed it on my two. The extra piping and fans on the roof were all for extra cooling. These locomotives had notorious overheating issues and the extra pipes/fans were to address that.
You can get the locomotive DCC ready. That said, you can run the sound equipped versions on DC, but it's not recommended. If you do, make sure it's with a powerpack that doesn't have pulse control, as the voltage spikes could damage or even destroy the decoder! Also, the locomotive has a 22-inch minimum recommended radius.

thanks for the info!
The Mars lights were removed when rebuilt in the early 1970s. They never had them while in this paint scheme.
OMG! WANT!!! lol Thanks again for the best reviews on the market! Amazing locos!

I did drill out the front for the third red marker light.

Nice review James. Why is the base horn (Blast) different from the doppler horn (3-chime)?

Passenger
Strictly used on commuter push-pull trains running west out of Chicago early 70s early 90s for the BN units.
They totally failed on the BN rotary beacon......
