When I and an old friend did a Georgia to California unsupported bicycle tour back in the early 90s, we became masters of stealth camping. These videos are wonderful, as they take me back to those days of my youth. To this day, as I'm driving in awful freeway traffic, I find myself looking into patches of woods off the road and thinking what a great stealth camping site this one or that one would be. My next phase will be when I finally purchase a dual purpose motorcycle. Something I can dip off the highway and camouflage with a tarp or the like. I'm itching to relive those camping memories!

I'm the same way about the skateboarding I used to do. Haven't skated in 25, 30 years, but to this day I still look at every curb, drainage ditch and odd shaped concrete protrusion and start imagining skating on/in it...

this guy could be camping in the antartic and still be paranoid......half the video is spent with him worrying about getting caught for some reason...even in the shyttiest god forsaken spots that people wouldnt even want to go near, let alone the homeless.
the entire channel and show should be renamed how to be a hobo and suck at it(by choosing the worse location, most uncomfortable, least privacy and the noisiest godforsaken environments) that bridge one my god from the start what a nightmare.....now the express bridges or highway bridges in my country are extremely quiet and whisper soft.....because the goddam bridges are elevated 15m or 50 feet above ground, massive headrooms providing ample shelter yet still able to look at the stars.....over hangs a river which means nice beachfront view.....

Here's a hint for having a stealthier fire: Dig a hole in the ground for the BBQ or even just to light a regular fire. That way, the flames can get taller before they get to where someone can see them. For that BBQ, I don't think you'd even have to go full Dakota fire pit and dig a ventilation hole on the side or anything.
I have made Dakota fire pits several times and they work really well! They basically only smoke when they're first getting started and then they burn so hot that they stop smoking. The other nice thing about them is that you don't have to put as much wood in them to keep them burning. Then, when you're done with the fire, it's easy to just put the dirt right back to cover the hole and it leaves no trace that anyone ever made a fire there. You can always tell when the fire is completely out by seeing if the soil is still hot and that way you know how much water to put on it. It's nice for the plants in the area too because ash is good nutrients for them and plus you'll be watering the plants too when you go to douse the fire. Dakota fire pits are absolutely my favorite fire pits.

Back in the 70's I spent a couple years hitchhiking cross-country, and would basically have to find a place to sleep if I couldn't get a ride. I found that these interchange forests were actually very good options, if large enough, and safer than wandering off the highway where you were most likely to be found and harassed by locals or cops. depending on where in the country you are, these mini forested areas can be pretty big and also isolated.

An actual survival situation where a car is stranded, say in the mountains. You can see trees, but everything is covered in snow. Boughs down, one of those, light that gizmo and use it for your fire's base. It's hot enough to melt snow off the wood you've put around it as a wind break and reflector. As you get wood dryish, you can add it on top of the charcoal. FYI, I keep a picnic sized charcoal grill to use as a fire bowl and several one pound lots of charcoal, vaccume packed with a paper inner bag that has some tinder in it, in the back of my rig when travelling, especially in winter.

I have to say, I really enjoy your message about cleaning up the trash around you. I've taken it to heart and have been cleaning up around the campsites I stay at, and even pick up trash I find when I'm just out for a hike. I camped at Grand Teton National Park some weeks back, and even found some trash around the Hidden Falls area, which was really disheartening. Every single person is a steward of the planet, we ought to go out of our way to keep it as nice as we can!

growing up my parents drove it into me to always pick up my stuff and dont dump garbage, its easy enough to take it with you. always seemed like common sense, we arnt dogs that crap on the side of the road after all. over the years ive had friend and the like that just set something down outside of their car and then drive off, and i never understood why they dont just take it with them or dump it in a garbage can 20 feet away.
strangest thing happened once, my parents did it as well just set something outside the car, i gave them crap for it for the above reasons. cant even begin to understand why they would do it when they are the ones that always drove it into me to not do that.
Of course, anyone that lives on a corner lot knows that its also the garbage can of the neighborhood. no idea what is wrong with people to throw things out of their car, as if maybe they are proving something to society 'you cant control me, ill do what i want, when i want, take this garbage! hah!' ... one of these days ill catch someone and follow them and then dump a bunch of crap in their yard.

Aussie 🇦🇺 Fan here Steve. Melbourne - Australia. Love your videos. Just started watching and binging several vids a week to catch up. My wife & I did a wicked camper road trip thru BC & Alberta in 2012. Can relate to the nervousness of ‘boondocking” as you say. Best part of your vids is your humility & sarcastic humour. Your discoveries at each location and your commentary are what makes these clips great.

I have a friend from England who has made two around-the-world solo, unsupported bicycle trips. He sells nearly everything he owns to finance each trip, checks out of his rental place, and sets off with no schedule, no reservations, and the goal of spending money only when necessary to fly in order to get to the next continent. Improvises the trips on-the-fly. Lives off the land. Usually gets fed for free by people he meets, and usually stealth camps (usually in places where that is prohibited)....just finds a likely spot, nips off into the woods or whatever, and pitches his tiny tent. He nearly drowned one time when it turned out he had pitched his tent over a high pressure pop-up arrigation/sprinkler head, which flooded his tent in seconds. Another time found that he was right next to a cliff that he did not see in the dark. Another time found that he had camped along the edge of an army gunnery range, in the line of fire had he not quickly cleared out after sunrise. Was accosted by Turkish military in the middle of the night, thought they might really cause him trouble, but ended up drinking with them and becoming buddies. Sneaking across borders past sleeping guards in the wee hours, since he did not have the necessary visas. Being hidden from the authorities by locals he befriended. The stories are endless. But I would rather listen to his stories than do crazy stuff like that myself.

There's lots of unvisited wild green spaces by our highways. I've seen homeless take a trail into some woods with a bedroll or backpack. Sometimes things happen and anyone could find themselves in that situation. Illness, job loss, injury or any number of things can happen.

It's a safety issue. The weeds are cut low on the sides of highways so drivers can see what wildlife is lurking there. Sometimes these critters will hide in the growth & then make a dash into traffic & the results are not pretty if someone swerves doing 80 or 100 kph.
