    Ed, I absolutely love the kind-of sort-of a little subtle "contrary to popular computer games" comments. As a player, I appreciate learning the facts versus what gets jammed into game play. Would be an interesting comparison exercise, since we know that many of vehicles, in games, are paper designs, at best, and complete farces, at worst.

    Interesting how these more obscure designs have only really come to our consciousness through games such as WoT and War Thunder. I remember seeing them in publications such as the MAFVA's monthly magazine, Bellona and the old Profile series. They were strange - a product of the post Imperial, perhaps slightly mad minds of the British military establishment, facing a threat the old Empire could barely understand. I have watched or am watching your videos, one by one and I am unexpectedly learning a lot. My knowledge of British tanks is quite deep having written some tank vs tank wargaming software called Firestrike that was never released. A lot of in depth research was undertaken but my knowledge does not match yours. You must live close to Bovington I assume? If I did, I would be there on a daily pass.

    According to Tank Encyclopedia, only the turret of the FV4005 Stage II remains. The turret is currently mated with a spare Centurion hull The Tank Museum had. The original hull was modified with a recoil spade which could be lowered by a hand-cranked winch.

  • @nicholasperry2380
    @nicholasperry2380 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very interesting view of an ill covered era. I love the need for external bracing on the turret armour, I suspect that raised comments. Likely not kind ones. With reference to the 'certain online game' could you clarify the FV215 designations a little more? I believed the photo with the extra hull hatch shows the FV215 turret on a partial hull of the proposed AVRE design. This would be used by the demolitions operator in lieu of the Churchill's pannier doors as with the Centurion operator.

    Why skip over 155mm to go directly to 180mm? It seems like a 155mm HESH round would have been quite effective and such a vehicle could have doubled as heavy artillery support. Kind of like an updated WW2 Russian assault gun. If mounted to Centurion hulls such a vehicle could have provided integrated Fire support to gun tank units.

    As a TD the idea is beyond questionable but I wonder if the 215 with a bit of refinement would have made a good SPG similar to the US made M109

    • @ThePhoenix198
      @ThePhoenix198 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Too heavy
      2. Why would you put so much armour on a SPG, at the expense of mobility?

    • @Colonel_Overkill
      @Colonel_Overkill 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The armor is for splinter protection or small arms fire, not taking hits from peer opponents. As for weight, questionable. Development can see space needed shrink as well as weight if it were deemed worth the expenditure. Finally, look at the weight of this thing compared to a PzH 2000 or M109A6 Paladin. Had the NATO force decided on allowing different artillery calibers this may have had a future doing such but shoot and scoot sending 183mm hi ex love is the only realistic role I see.

    The IS-3 turned out to not be the boogieman western intelligence believed it was. Reports of 230mm. of armour omitted to point out that this was on the gun mantlet only.
    The IS-3 armour layout was actually:
    Mantlet = 230mm.
    Turret = 200mm. all round.
    Hull front = 120mm.
    Hull sides & rear = 60mm.
    Deck & Floor = 30mm.
    It wasn't until the late 1980's / early 1990's that it was discovered that two IS-3 tanks were destroyed during the Battle of Vienna Bridge in 1945, one by a Panther G scoring a point blank hit on the upper hull side of a parked IS-3 and a second IS-3 being burnt out follow two Panzerfaust side hits, during street fighting to capture the bridge. The account of the battle is in the book, Tank Action, by Colonel George Forty, former curator of the Bovington Tank Museum and my boss when I worked there during 1986 to 1987.

    • @armouredarchives8867
      @armouredarchives8867  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I’m well aware of this, it was a fixation they had despite more sensible voices telling them the threat lay with the newer T series. As for IS3s in Vienna this remains somewhat controversial as to date no evidence has ever emerged from it, no photos, no battle reports nothing, not in Russia or Germany. it’s a shame we can’t asK G.F where the information came from originally.
