since the pilots couldn't see outside the plane because of angled landing, engineers put together a solution. The Concorde featured a droop snoot. Droop snoot? yeah, the snoot would droop. The snoot drooped.

A 50 year old aircraft that looks like its from 50 years in the future! Faster than anything today too, and probably faster than any airliner that will fly for decades, amazing plane.

@@x808drifter There's always been "paper" planes that haven't left the design stage... Back in the 90s there was a plan to make a bigger TU-144, the TU-244. Boom, which is a terrible name for a plane manufacturer, has been promising something for years, but where is their flying prototype?

Seeing Concorde in person Is definitely on my bucket list. Magnificent aircraft for its time, nothing after its retirement will capture my fondness for Concorde. Why I’m I so emotional for a jet.😅
If you ever fly out of Heathrow there's a strong chance you'll catch a glimpse as G-BOAB is parked up next to 23L. Make sure to sit on the left hand side of the plane!
If you're visiting London, Brooklands Museum is only a 30min train journey away. Brooklands has surely the best Concorde exhibit in the world. You can partake in a virtual flight where you're taken over the G-BBDG, and the pilot comes over the tannoy to simulate a full flight. The mach speed and altitude indicators in the cabin are live and take you up to 60,000ft. Incredible experience for any Concorde fan. Best wishes
Duxford Museum in Cambridgeshire UK has one in their main hanger, along with a Lancaster bomber and a Vulcan bomber. among others....

There is an Air France Concorde on display on one of the exits from CDG and a British Airways Concorde at the USS Intrepid meuseum
Theres one in the manchester airport viewing park, the cafe there is literally a concord hangar and u can pay for a tour of the plane inside
Concorde is older than a lot of Grandparents now, and she still looks like something from the future. What a machine.
Imagine if one day this beautiful bird could fly again, not just a slow fly by, full bore supersonic, to finally hear those Olympus engines at full chat once again, it’s wishful thinking but it’d definitely be a thing to see
It flew into Newcastle airport once in the late 80s right over the village I grew up in. We were all gathered in the park when it went over and got a great view of the underside as it flew over, and the noise was deafening even at subsonic speed! Absolutely amazing machine, so far ahead of its time
Sadly we're counting on the Americans to bring back supersonic travel
Tickets were absurdly expensive and the interior was very loud.
Average round trip ticket cost was $12,000
Mankind though the ages has improved, progressed and innovated, this must be one of the rare examples when we have truly gone backwards. It's just a crime that BA hasn't allowed at least 1 of these aircraft to remain in a flying condition.
Technology wise, maybe, but socially humanity is in a nosedive.
It wasn’t a perfect aircraft. Noise and fuel consumption was probably an issue
@@Johnnyprc Not true, at least perhaps true for BA, but Branson's Virgin wanted to take them on but BA could not have that, so here we are.....
They wanted to!!! BA was starting a life extension and interior renovation program to lessen the charter flights as a way to preserve the number of airframe cycles. By doing this BA hoped they could maybe even get her to 2012 instead of the original plan of 07 retirement after the modifications.
But Air France pulled out completely, and Airbus said they would simply refuse to supply any replacement parts after AF retired their fleet. Even after this, BA wanted to keep a single concorde in service for heritage purposes and only fly subsonic. It just was deemed unfeasible. Such a shame.
I was once and only once fortunate enough to be driving along the perimeter road of Heathrow Airport precisely at the time Concorde was taking off and t flew overhead, to this day the memory of the experience brings a smile to my face..

So sleek and elegant, it looks so much like a concept aircraft of the future that it must be weird climbing into the cockpit, and seeing all those analog instruments from a different age.
Great video - just for the record, Duxford's G-AXDN has the "droopiest" nose - and was also reactivated in 2023. BA pilots, flying 'DN, reported that they would still like to SEE the nose - so the engineers dialled back so that later Concorde noses didn't droop so much! Great to see ANY Concorde airframe moving.
Been there! I saw the droop demonstration, crazy how it almost reaches the floor! Pretty sure it's 12.5 degrees!

I’ve visited this superb museum a few years back with my young daughter; well worth a visit; fantastic exhibits and very friendly staff.
Great video and insight into the reactivation of the nose and visor mechanism on G-BOAF. However I think you'll find the idea to reactivate the nose was conceived back in November 2017 when I brought together members from Heritage Concorde (who have successfully reactivated the same on aircraft G-BOAC at Manchester, G-BBDG at Brooklands and G-AXDN at Duxford) and Aerospace Bristol together to start the project. Glad to see it's still working and look forward to seeing it in action once again on November 26th to commemorate the Twentieth Anniversary.
I wonder how much effort would need to go into making this aircraft flight certified again? Its only been 17 years but I wonder if they took out components over the years and how much would need to be replaced. Judging by the fact that they needed to create a brand new hydraulic system just to get 1 part running again probably means the aircraft is in really bad shape compnent wise.
Ive done some restoration work on retired/decommissioned nyc subway trains, ones built in the 1930s and the team managed to get them operational for special passenger service after 50 years. Getting something working again from a time that's long past is a really special feeling. Maybe one day we'll get lucky and see her fly once again.
Wasn't the point of redesigning the hydraulics because they only wanted the front section working, not the entire hydraulics tho?
Component wise this aircraft is in perfect condition, could be flown tomorrow. The hydraulics are custom because they couldn’t run power or hydraulic through the actual plane, had to come from the Museum.
Unfortunately, British Airways destroyed most of the documentation for the all the Concordes they had. This had the effect of preventing anyone else using them as it is almost impossible to re-certify without records.

Had Concorde been designed and built a little later, there would simply be a few cameras and a few monitors to improve the visibility. Even in the sixties, I imagine, a few of the engineers had to have thought about it.
So you'd fix the nose in place permanently & the cameras or monitors die...what would their redundancy be?... Not a lot.
With this they back-up hydraulic system & if both fail it has a manual crank.
Redundancy aside there were also Aero reasons for the droop nose.

Been there twice now! Absolutely love this place!! Inside there is an AMAZING range of planes and weaponry and of course the Concorde is just beautiful as always. Had a look at the workshop while I was there too!

A very sleek and very fast airliner wish they would bring it back so 😔 sad to see it no longer flying you could fly from New York to London in a staggering 2 hrs 52 mins .
It landed in 2003 and it was operational so wondering what went bad in the last twenty years. I know the hydraulic systems are compartmentalized so they can be switched on separately
museum aircraft are drained of all fluids before being place on display. they didn't want to refill the entire system for the droop so had to come up with a workaround.
You guys are seriously underrated.

She still has plenty of life left in her.
Not really. The air-frame at this point is unrecoverable and non-airworthy, the hydraulics have been drained permanently and is feasibly impossible to replace. Unfortunately there is only one production Concorde that could ever fly again, and it is in Barbados. That air-frame was never decommissioned (much to BAs anger) and the triplex hydraulic systems were never drained of Dextron fluid. That Concorde really is in flyable condition. Unfortunately with 13+ years sat out in the wind, rain, ice and raging heat without maintenance, the Bristol Concorde probably has corrosion everywhere underneath that white skin.

I am lucky to live relatively close to this Concorde (Cornwall). I hated seeing it sat outside for many years. I was so pleased when they opened Aerospace Bristol. It was a surreal experience seeing and touching it. I loved the interior black leather seats as this was the last refit. I heard the sonic boom many times in Cornwall as it was flying to the US over the ocean. I also saw it in the 90's flying at Leeds Bradford airport when I lived up north. Amazing aircraft.

Fun fact. Most of the BA Concordes are still owned by BA. They were technically "on-loan" to various museums worldwide.
50 years! (Well 52 now.) This bird was so ahead of it's time. That cockpit tho!

We could have had Concorde still flying, Richard Branson tried to make it happen but BA refused to allow him to buy one. He even said he would only use it for special events and keep the BA colours, but they still said no.

Concorde's signature droop nose, which could drop to either 5 or 12.5 degrees, was designed and manufactured in the heart of Cambridge, at Marshall Aerospace.
There was an emergency procedure for a total failure of the nose hydraulics on concorde when she was in service. They would CATIII auto land, full auto land in the 60s is just wild.
I was stationed at Torrejon A,F.B. Spain when the Concorde was test flying from there. The AC had British Air Ways paint scheme on one side and Air France paint scheme on the other. She would sit at the end of the runway with the nose in the droop position throttle up for take off and the sheet metal siding would start to rattle and shake. I swear rivets popped out of the building. Once she was in the air. the test pilots flew her like a fighter. It was a one plane air show. I would love to have flown on board her!

When i was young from the first time i found out about this it was one of my dreams to go in the Concorde , but that never happened !
What a beautiful aircraft. 1960s tech pushed to its very limits but still timeless in design. I would do anything to hear those 4 Olympus 593s at full afterburner.

It’s amazing really. The droopy nose system was designed over 50 years ago, and even today in 2023 they’re having trouble replicating it. That’s how good Concord really was.
Quite literally decades ahead of its time. We have gone backward since then. In the 1960s they used technology to fly faster than the speed of sound, now we use it to talk shite and watch videos on our phones.

Not many people know this but the nose of Concord was modelled on the nose of Daniella Westbrook. Who also had a droopy nose.
