Yup, I used to love splurging on stupid luminous purple paint jobs I will never use just so I have the option to customise my favorite ships however I want in the hangar. But with these stupid prices I'm not getting a good deal at all, so unless there is a REALLY good paint job that I somehow don't already own, I won't buy any more ARX. This was completely stupid and greedy on Frontiers part. I was absolutely prepared to buy everything from the ARX store at one point, now I will buy nothing, or at the very least, be MUCH more selective with my ARX purchases and only buy skins I know I will use (which I already own anyway)

The goal is to get people to buy ARX, not to buy cosmetics. I suspect that most of the people whining about the price hike are the people who weren't buying ARX anyway, and are unhappy that the free ARX they get from playing won't go as far now. That's fair, but FDev needs to keep the lights on or the whole discussion becomes irrelevant. Good point. They gave people some extra arx for the one-off event (800 arx for all eight hearts in typically 36-48 hours is two weeks of free arx, so not that much) and then decided to reduce the value.
Powerplay will give you more arx and if you play legacy is 800 week seperate of your 400 week of the live version . So technicmy your cant have 1200 week

Oh gosh, the snark! Love it! My wallet was open to frontier up to the time when they obfuscated prices by implementing the arx store. Now, I've even less reason to open my wallet. Sad. Of course, they already got quite the payout from me with the 'Lifetime Pass' which has meant I paid 3x the base cost for each of the two expansions. Yay. What a STE... err, Deal.
Raising prices usually results in fewer sales. Rather than make more money, it will probably lead to less being spent by players instead, especially considering how much more they are now charging for them. Thanks, but no thanks. As I have posted elsewhere: I dont see it as a problem. People keep saying they want the game to be developed and maintained. So where do you think the money will come from if they don't change prices - I don't think they've increased prices in years as far as I can remember, where other games have increased prices on a regular basis (and some have monthly/yearly subscription to play as well). When you consider that you buy the game and then have no further costs to pay to keep playing (and the price of the game has decreased since release and is often on sale as well) then only additional expense is if they release another full expansion (Horizons/Odyssey for example) or ARX. The funding has to come from somewhere. Games like Eve have a pay to play subscription (yes you can play for free, but you'll only get to a point before you need to pay to actually get anywhere) so thy have a continued cash stream + any extras that you purchase. ED is effectively Free to play with no restrictions once you have the game. TBH if the money gets invested in the game I don't see it as a problem, it's if the money isn't put back into the game it'll become an issue. Going to be patient and see how it goes over the next few months or so and see what the they do. Hopefully the extra income will start to show. If not, then I'll consider what to do.
Increasing prices of digital luxury goods which have a minimum one-time cost is usually in the wrong part of the crossing of the Supply and Demand Curves, leading to less overall sales, not more. This is Frontier shooting themselves in the foot again.
I don't think it's accountants. They at least have a passing acquaintance with the almost always real impact of price changes for luxury items: lower overall sales.

I used to buy tons of skins, even for my secondary ships just so I have the customisation options available in the hangar. Holy WOW those are some crazy price hikes. I was recently grinding a bit to buy some SRV skins for like 460 arx and DBX skins for I believe 680 arx. Those cost 1600 arx a piece now. Guess I won't be playing the game again anytime soon. Fdev never fail to disappoint
@@catladygames_ I don't though. Most of Elite's gameplay is grind, but most of my gametime is just spent exploring. Even then, though, it is nice to have a goal to work towards in a game, and in my case that was to be able to more personalize the vehicles I use.

Not only have players been getting bonus ARX for killing Titan hearts, but ARX are also (very likely) a part of the new PowerPlay 2.0 rewards coming later this year. I think once the dust has settled, this will bring the crazy price hike into more approachable reach. Still, they could have done this all at once so it doesn't feel like a sucker punch now and a bandaid on it later.
@@genogaron That could be a good idea actually. More ways to earn ARX through in-game rewards. It makes ARX less of a gated premium currency, and increases the availability of ship customisation, but still allowing people to pay for them for a balance boost. It also makes PowerPlay more engaging and useful.
They've already stated they are going to be doing that. It's too hard for people to look at the big picture. Instead, they just complain about one corner. Human nature, go figure....

Yup, exactly... No more splurging on vibrant purple paint jobs for my unused Keelback for me! My main ship already has tactical white and midnight black. I can't justify paying for ships/skins I don't use anymore, I'll just stick with the default colour for those! Less money for Frontier.
Fortunately, I mostly don't give a crap how any of my equipment looks! Either that or I have already gotten it kitted out. Hopefully they will still do holiday sales and such.

The company is in hard financial times, and the game itself is stupidly cheap for what we get. They need to up their cash flow or eventually the whole thing will come to an end. Increasing the price for cosmetics that don't impact gameplay seems like the best option to me. I have no problem with it.

Players will be more cautious about splurging on ugly and alternative cosmetics (which make up like 90% of all the paint jobs) in favor of just buying the one or two they like. with a hike on cosmetic cost, they should lower the cost of ARX themselves a bit.. use more, be tempted to buy more because they cost less. If you want to sell more of something, you generally put it on sale.
I don't think they care how many arx they sell. They care how much profit they make. But I think they have done this all the wrong way. They should have made the arx slightly more expensive to buy in the first place (slightly, not a 250% price hike). That way you don't devalue the arx in a player's account and the change only affects purchases going forward, for which the customer has transparency and can decide if it's worth it. Taking value out of the already purchased arx is bad faith imho.
I only use Arx for organizing my fleet. Browns=mining, blacks=combat, grays=exploration, etc. I couldn't care less about the increase. There are plenty of other popular games that charge much more for what is essentially just pixels on a screen.
Wow, I was actually expecting them to LOWER the prices of the old skins that probably no one ever buys anymore and introduce the Midnight Black/chrome/golden/stygian permanently possibly at a slightly higher price than during the holidays. Maybe increase the Price of buying ARX with real money a bit due to inflation. But not Increase Cosmetics prices by that much, If most people are not buying cosmetics because they think it's not worth that much money then now even less people are gonna buy cosmetics... The prices of the jumpstart pre-built are 19$ USD if I recall, that's probably about the price of the Odyssey DLC when it's on sale...make that make sense... At this point they should just sell like 100Mil in game Credits for 25000 ARX, at least no one would complain, Old players have enough money to not know what to do with it so they won't care, new players will be happy to buy that to skip the early stress of the game (much more than pre-built jumpstart), and FDEV will likely sell way more ARX and make more money that way!
That didn't change from the original release announcement, and Arx still costs the same price. If you could afford the PMK2 before, you still can. If you couldn't, this has nothing to do with it.

I've said it before - They really need to allow an interactive player base that feeds comments and influences decisions directly into FDev. So many backward steps and ignored voices from the community, for a game we all love and wish to support in the right way!
These price increases are disgraceful. Most of the paint jobs and ship kits were too expensive as it was. People are more likely to purchase them if they are cheap. I think this will cause less people to spend. Times are tough, everything is too expensive. Increasing prices of items that cost Fdev nothing, while people are struggling, is the opposite of what they should be doing.
Havent bought anything since Arx has been introduced. All cosmetics i bought with € back then. Looks like Frontier needs Money bad, but increasing prices will only lead to less buys and so even less money. Maybe they should dish out another live time expansion pass fir high money and then say later oh hey we just chosen every new updates will be free but, dont worry, you will be given some of the mega expensive paint jobs fir comparsion.

Maybe ya got deadlines from investors to show something, but I would have given a 2 to 4 week warning on increases that much. Today has put my purchase of the Python Mk2 in doubt in protest, I was looking forward to getting my hands on it next week. A flat 20 to 50% increase across the board I could have lived with, the completely random increase just staggers belief in some cases. I guess my financial support for the game wont last much longer if at all now unless something is done about the changes on the store.
I haven't bought any extras in the game at all even after playing for years so these changes aren't as world-ending as they might be. At least it's all cosmetic stuff and nothing to do with actual gameplay. After all, I can't see my suit when I'm wearing it!

I have a kind of reverence for your view but I don't really see a problem with a cash injection. I, personally would like this game to survive and grow. I've spent a lot of hours just flying around discovering things I had no idea existed. I flew to the other side of the galaxy and along the way I found a system where a body that could only form close to it's star was in an orbit that suggested that it was it was either captured or kicked into it's current orbit by masses unseen. It has a polar orbit on the outer edge of the system at an almost a perfect 90 degrees to the solar plane.
Holy moley, I've been waiting on a sale for some suit packs and ship kits, and they increase them? Lol people don't wanna pay the extortionate prices as it is.... They're mental. Well, I'll buy early access to the Python2 but I'm not gonna bother buying extra ARX for ship kits and suit packs now, supporting them is one thing, but they're just ripping us off lol. Business sense would've done a sale coinciding with the Python2/etc release so MORE people bought stuff whilst there with "spare ARX", or been inclined to buy a 5ers worth or something.
It would have been more interesting to have lowered prices and increased the number of cosmetics. Even if it means having identical ones, but different colors. Or even a free choice of base color for our ships to personalize them a little. Already it's slowly starting to resemble SC marketing, it shouldn't have too much influence either... Like the crappy ship kits we got for the Diamond Back or the useless Type 6. We will end up with small players who will take a ship without knowing its functionality while they have barely left driving lessons ready to die at the slightest opportunity before abandoning the game.
Not gona lie, I was hoping for a reduction in some things. I've always felt the bobbleheads were already quite egregious for what they are. The On foot stuff was already really quite high needing you to buy multiple packs to complete the sets or a whole pack for a single item you like, along with single weapon skins being more than ships. Its obvious they need the income though and for us as players being able to earn through titans and powerplay on top of the 400 weekly, it might take a bit of time to get things you want entirely through play but small purchases goes towards the bigger pot to keep the servers running. Nothing forces you to buy ARX other than FOMO with limited skins and your own vanity.

I am no expert in economy ... so I guess they did their calculations ... but I would rather spend 50 cents 1 Euro per cosmetic multiple times than having to buy 10 20 Euros of ARX in order to purchase that one item ... Good point. They gave people some extra arx for the one-off event (800 arx for all eight hearts in typically 36-48 hours is two weeks of free arx, so not that much) and then decided to reduce the value.
Powerplay will give you more arx and if you play legacy is 800 week seperate of your 400 week of the live version . So technicmy your cant have 1200 week

Oh gosh, the snark! Love it! My wallet was open to frontier up to the time when they obfuscated prices by implementing the arx store. Now, I've even less reason to open my wallet. Sad. Of course, they already got quite the payout from me with the 'Lifetime Pass' which has meant I paid 3x the base cost for each of the two expansions. Yay. What a STE... err, Deal.
Raising prices usually results in fewer sales. Rather than make more money, it will probably lead to less being spent by players instead, especially considering how much more they are now charging for them.

Exactly! I used to like splurging on useless and ugly paint jobs just for the lols because they felt like a good deal. I already have everything I want, and won't be buying any more, I'm sure most CMDRs are the same. So effectively, they just lost a shit ton of money doing this, and I am baffled as to who thought this was a good idea... so stupid.

I dont see it as a problem. People keep saying they want the game to be developed and maintained. So where do you think the money will come from if they don't change prices - I don't think they've increased prices in years as far as I can remember, where other games have increased prices on a regular basis (and some have monthly/yearly subscription to play as well). When you consider that you buy the game and then have no further costs to pay to keep playing (and the price of the game has decreased since release and is often on sale as well) then only additional expense is if they release another full expansion (Horizons/Odyssey for example) or ARX. The funding has to come from somewhere. Games like Eve have a pay to play subscription (yes you can play for free, but you'll only get to a point before you need to pay to actually get anywhere) so thy have a continued cash stream + any extras that you purchase. ED is effectively Free to play with no restrictions once you have the game. TBH if the money gets invested in the game I don't see it as a problem, it's if the money isn't put back into the game it'll become an issue. Going to be patient and see how it goes over the next few months or so and see what the they do. Hopefully the extra income will start to show. If not, then I'll consider what to do.
Increasing prices of digital luxury goods which have a minimum one-time cost is usually in the wrong part of the crossing of the Supply and Demand Curves, leading to less overall sales, not more. This is Frontier shooting themselves in the foot again.

Their goal isn't to get people to buy a lot of cosmetics. It's to keep the lights on and the servers running.

I used to buy tons of skins, even for my secondary ships just so I have the customisation options available in the hangar. I sure won't be able to financially justify doing that now with these silly prices. They just lost loads of money!

Holy WOW those are some crazy price hikes. I was recently grinding a bit to buy some SRV skins for like 460 arx and DBX skins for I believe 680 arx. Those cost 1600 arx a piece now. Guess I won't be playing the game again anytime soon. Fdev never fail to disappoint

@@catladygames_ I don't though. Most of Elite's gameplay is grind, but most of my gametime is just spent exploring. Even then, though, it is nice to have a goal to work towards in a game, and in my case that was to be able to more personalize the vehicles I use.

Not only have players been getting bonus ARX for killing Titan hearts, but ARX are also (very likely) a part of the new PowerPlay 2.0 rewards coming later this year. I think once the dust has settled, this will bring the crazy price hike into more approachable reach. Still, they could have done this all at once so it doesn't feel like a sucker punch now and a bandaid on it later.

@@genogaron That could be a good idea actually. More ways to earn ARX through in-game rewards. It makes ARX less of a gated premium currency, and increases the availability of ship customisation, but still allowing people to pay for them for a balance boost. It also makes PowerPlay more engaging and useful.
They've already stated they are going to be doing that. It's too hard for people to look at the big picture. Instead, they just complain about one corner. Human nature, go figure....

If fdev had increased the cost of ARX packages instead of the cosmetic ARX cost, this would have been a lot better received. The ARX price of stuff in-game should have remained the same.
It would have been smarter to reduce the prices to get us to buy more and enjoy the game longer. These increases makes us want to buy....nothing.
Yup, exactly... No more splurging on vibrant purple paint jobs for my unused Keelback for me! My main ship already has tactical white and midnight black. I can't justify paying for ships/skins I don't use anymore, I'll just stick with the default colour for those! Less money for Frontier.

The company is in hard financial times, and the game itself is stupidly cheap for what we get. They need to up their cash flow or eventually the whole thing will come to an end. Increasing the price for cosmetics that don't impact gameplay seems like the best option to me. I have no problem with it.

Players will be more cautious about splurging on ugly and alternative cosmetics (which make up like 90% of all the paint jobs) in favor of just buying the one or two they like. It's not every game company, it's every publicly traded company. The stock market is driving them all to ruin.

with a hike on cosmetic cost, they should lower the cost of ARX themselves a bit.. use more, be tempted to buy more because they cost less. If you want to sell more of something, you generally put it on sale.
I don't think they care how many arx they sell. They care how much profit they make. But I think they have done this all the wrong way. They should have made the arx slightly more expensive to buy in the first place (slightly, not a 250% price hike). That way you don't devalue the arx in a player's account and the change only affects purchases going forward, for which the customer has transparency and can decide if it's worth it. Taking value out of the already purchased arx is bad faith imho.

I only use Arx for organizing my fleet. Browns=mining, blacks=combat, grays=exploration, etc. I couldn't care less about the increase. There are plenty of other popular games that charge much more for what is essentially just pixels on a screen.
Wow, I was actually expecting them to LOWER the prices of the old skins that probably no one ever buys anymore and introduce the Midnight Black/chrome/golden/stygian permanently possibly at a slightly higher price than during the holidays. Maybe increase the Price of buying ARX with real money a bit due to inflation.
But not Increase Cosmetics prices by that much, If most people are not buying cosmetics because they think it's not worth that much money then now even less people are gonna buy cosmetics...
The prices of the jumpstart pre-built are 19$ USD if I recall, that's probably about the price of the Odyssey DLC when it's on sale...make that make sense...
At this point they should just sell like 100Mil in game Credits for 25000 ARX, at least no one would complain, Old players have enough money to not know what to do with it so they won't care, new players will be happy to buy that to skip the early stress of the game (much more than pre-built jumpstart), and FDEV will likely sell way more ARX and make more money that way!

These price increases are disgraceful. Most of the paint jobs and ship kits were too expensive as it was. People are more likely to purchase them if they are cheap. I think this will cause less people to spend. Times are tough, everything is too expensive. Increasing prices of items that cost Fdev nothing, while people are struggling, is the opposite of what they should be doing.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire. First pay-to-win, now pay-to-skin problems. FDev, ya gotta slow roll this kind of shit. Maybe ya got deadlines from investors to show something, but I would have given a 2 to 4 week warning on increases that much. Probably would have gotten a lot of people off the fence and into the store. This....this is a bit of a shit surprise. Can still be fixed. Roll the prices back for a few weeks and see what happens. Then bump up to what you need to do.

That is very weird, if people haven't bought it at the current price they are hardly going to fork out more! So they must be assuming they are going to get New players. Or new reasons for existing players. The latter stretches credulity as by definition they are only cosmetic. So they expect new players. i really hope (despite all evidence to the contrary) they know what they are doing.

Today has put my purchase of the Python Mk2 in doubt in protest, I was looking forward to getting my hands on it next week. A flat 20 to 50% increase across the board I could have lived with, the completely random increase just staggers belief in some cases. I guess my financial support for the game wont last much longer if at all now unless something is done about the changes on the store.
I haven't bought any extras in the game at all even after playing for years so these changes aren't as world-ending as they might be. At least it's all cosmetic stuff and nothing to do with actual gameplay. After all, I can't see my suit when I'm wearing it!

I have a kind of reverence for your view but I don't really see a problem with a cash injection. I, personally would like this game to survive and grow. I've spent a lot of hours just flying around discovering things I had no idea existed. I flew to the other side of the galaxy and along the way I found a system where a body that could only form close to it's star was in an orbit that suggested that it was it was either captured or kicked into it's current orbit by masses unseen. It has a polar orbit on the outer edge of the system at an almost a perfect 90 degrees to the solar plane.

Business sense would've done a sale coinciding with the Python2/etc release so MORE people bought stuff whilst there with "spare ARX", or been inclined to buy a 5ers worth or something.
It would have been more interesting to have lowered prices and increased the number of cosmetics. Even if it means having identical ones, but different colors. Or even a free choice of base color for our ships to personalize them a little.
Already it's slowly starting to resemble SC marketing, it shouldn't have too much influence either... Like the crappy ship kits we got for the Diamond Back or the useless Type 6.
We will end up with small players who will take a ship without knowing its functionality while they have barely left driving lessons ready to die at the slightest opportunity before abandoning the game.

Not gona lie, I was hoping for a reduction in some things. I've always felt the bobbleheads were already quite egregious for what they are. The On foot stuff was already really quite high needing you to buy multiple packs to complete the sets or a whole pack for a single item you like, along with single weapon skins being more than ships.
Its obvious they need the income though and for us as players being able to earn through titans and powerplay on top of the 400 weekly, it might take a bit of time to get things you want entirely through play but small purchases goes towards the bigger pot to keep the servers running. Nothing forces you to buy ARX other than FOMO with limited skins and your own vanity.
That last comment was sarcastic maybe not on the way as some one is thinking about. But be clear about this. No one need to buy cosmetic. you don`t need cosmetic at all. So whay be pissed off if ther price increase. If is to much just stop buying them, when the sell tank they will lower the price again. The cost for company working on videogame are increasing and a studio have to be financially profitable in order to maintain himself operational.
I am no expert in economy ... so I guess they did their calculations ... but I would rather spend 50 cents 1 Euro per cosmetic multiple times than having to buy 10 20 Euros of ARX in order to purchase that one item ... I don't know what the majority of people think, but if they are like me, they would greatly benefith by decreasing the price instead of increasing it
