After spending so many hours to gain enough reputation to get the Sol permit, I think this is one of those things that every Elite player does. There's no reward to have doing this but it's one of the best experiences.
99.9% of the Earth is completely unexplored. edit: since people are just dumb I'll explain further. There are still plenty of areas which are totally unexplored on the surface, deep jungles, deserts, polar regions etc. satelite images are NOT exploration and even then just a picture of a tree canopy tells you fuck all. Then you got the entirety of the oceans which are almost completely unexplored, caves, cavern systems, as well as the crust, mantel and the core of the planet. Yes, we have explored almost nothing on this planet. Effectively the entire planet is ready to be explored if somebody wants to. Is it dangerous and expensive? Yes, very much so, but not nearly as dangerous and expensive as traveling to Antarctica in 19th century or traveling across the ocean in the 15th. So get your head out of your ass and stop making excuses. You think exploring space will be cheap and available to everyone like in video games? Get real.

This game is great at setting the scope of space before you, helping you realize how insignificant you are. And how precious life is. Protect this blue and green ball of dirt at all times! Just finding this video now in 2022, but I started crying at work. The editing and music brought me instantly back to my first time driving a semi OTR. I'd been out for 5 months, and just got finished a coast to coast run. I only just completed the elite dangerous tutorial, but visiting earth is absolutely on the to-do list once i master everything! it'll probably take a lot of time and grinding though, i think you have to get to a specific rank
ye you need to get a permit when you get appropriate reputation or rank i dont rememeber, i just explore systems, i leave the area of influence as soon as possible and go far far away, towards other side of the galaxy and hope i dont get killed by someone before i turn in all the data i collected after months of exploration. happened to me once and i rage quited the game for like a year after i got ganked by a player in a system that i wanted to turn in the data. like hundreds of millions worth of credits

Yeah but it’s too much of a pain in the ass to be able to get there. You have to do a bunch of stupid missions for the Gaia corporation if you didn’t get the game when it first came out to get the Sol System pass. Fucking ridiculous in my opinion.

Just finding this video now in 2022, but I started crying at work. The editing and music brought me instantly back to my first time driving a semi OTR. I'd been out for 5 months, and just got finished a coast to coast run. Seeing the familiar road signs of Philly made me tear up, and this video, YOUR video, actually made me cry from the memory of that first feeling of 'home'.

I only just completed the elite dangerous tutorial, but visiting earth is absolutely on the to-do list once i master everything! it'll probably take a lot of time and grinding though, i think you have to get to a specific rank
ye you need to get a permit when you get appropriate reputation or rank i dont rememeber,
i just explore systems, i leave the area of influence as soon as possible and go far far away, towards other side of the galaxy
and hope i dont get killed by someone before i turn in all the data i collected after months of exploration.
happened to me once and i rage quited the game for like a year after i got ganked by a player in a system that i wanted to turn in the data.

This is one way or perhaps the only way for people to truly appreciate Earth and take good care of it, 'coz you never realize the value of something until it's gone.
Going back home like this after a very long time generates that genuine feeling of appreciation.
