The Redlands always have the best produce. When I lived in Monroe Co. We made a weekly trip to get , papaya, star fruit and dragon fruit. The quality was great and the taste was unbelievable. Now I have my produce manager getting them for me from S. Florida. Thanks for all of the wonderful produce.
Great short documentary. The Red Dragon Fruit was so juicy but your face told me the white one was sweeter We ate these for the first time Malaysia. They were served frozen and our kids just ate them straight from the skin. They wanted more. Thanks again for the video and I will check out the site for more technical detail about growing them.
I like to take dragon fruit with me on hikes and road trips. When I get thirsty or worn out I have one and dragon fruit quenches thirst and gives a boost of energy. Just eating one makes you feel a few years younger.Try one!
@tropicalfruitgrowers. I believe this fruit has been known for a long time in other parts of the world. of course it is popular in latin america, but i also heard it is very popular in east asia, like vietnam and taiwan. glad to see some exotic fruit is growing in popularity here in the states. sometimes an apple or banana gets old, it's nice to try new foods.
i love dragonfruit. it is available here in our local walmart for $2.97 each. and that is cheap. sometimes it goes for $4.99 each at Loblaws. thanks for showing the video of the actual plant.
I am growing the red variety. I once bought the white one and put it in a fruit salad that I brought to a pot luck dinner. I think it added an element of beauty and uniqueness to the salad. A few people asked me what it was, and said they liked it. What's not to like?
Yes! Your website is something that I've been looking for, and I like that you're a collection of real people and not a corporate food, inc. type place. If you have a facebook page, it makes it is like having your site bookmarked, except I can easily access and share your information from any computer, even if mine dies. Also, if you do updates every now and then, it will remind us that you have something we wanted to try.
No. The dragon fruit originated in Central America. It was discovered by explorers in the early 1800's and then brought to Vietnam where it was planted extensively. It is a delicious fruit!
I know you answered a similar question earlier, but can you be so kind and answer it anyway. I live in the tropical island of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean, do you think I can grow this plant here, or is it to wet and humid????? Also, I've been told not to grow them on trees, since the plants might grow over 7 feet tall and make them incapable of growing fruit. Is this true??? PLEASE ANSWER ME
Hi! The time it will take for your plants to bear fruit depends on several things. How big the plants were when planted, the care you have given them while they grew, and the weather conditions in which they have grown. It is possible to get a piece or two of fruit the year after you plant the dragon fruit plants, but I would plan more on two years after - again, depending on the above conditions. But be patient - the wait is worth it!
Yes, here in south Florida we can grow some truly wonderful, and delicious fruits and vegetables. But, don't undervalue what can grow where you live, and the what your neighborhood provides to you. Even in the city, residents can grow delicious vegetables and fruits in pots. You may be able to grow delicious blueberries, where we here in the south of Florida cannot. And what I wouldn't give to watch the leaves change color in the fall! Look around, there's a lot of good things where you live!
They grow plentiful and wild at sea level, Kona, Hawaii and go up the coconut trees eighty feet. They love growing out of the tops of six foot rock walls, (lava rock). Mahalo for your kokua.
PART #2 The pitaya species Selenicereus megalanthus is also grown in Florida and will pollinate pitaya in the genus Hylocereus . If you are trying to develop a new hybrid, hand pollinate Cereus peruvianus with these species of pitaya: Cereus triangularis and Cereus ocamponis. Hybrids are crosses between different cultivars in the same species or between 2 compatible species within the same genus.
Hi there, when you walk into the supermarket, how can one tell if the dragonfruit he or she picks up is either the red flesh or white flesh variety? The stickers on them don't usually say... (at least in the supermarket I go to doesn't have any useful stickers... they just say "dragonfruit" and that's about all it says).
As with all fruit, some are sweeter than others. It sounds like you tasted one that did not have as high a sugar content. Don't give up, there are plenty of sweet dragon fruit out there!
HI! Since the thorns along the stems of the dragon fruit plants are quite small, I do not believe that removing them would do any harm to the plant. But there really is no need to remove the thorns, as their small size do not pose much of a harvesting problem. If you are concerned about getting poked by a thorn, just wear a long sleeved shirt and some garden gloves when picking your dragon fruits! Happy harvesting! TFGSF
You should have no problem, as far as the weather is concerned, but be sure your soil drains well and you have full sun. I would check with your local Cooperative Extension agency to confirm with your area conditions. Yes, check with Pine Island Nursery on our website Nursery page and contact them . They have the plants! TFGSF
Sorry for this late reply. Yes, you should be able to grow dragon fruit under Puerto Rico's climate. It is hot and humid here in South Florida as well! I have not heard about this tree restriction. These plants grow, and fruit, very well on trees. The only problem with doing growing it in a tree is that it will be very hard to harvest the fruit from high in the tree. I'd suggest making a trellis to confine the plant to a more manageable height. Good luck! TFGSF
HI, Prickly pears are not grown commercially in our area, of that I am aware. Instead we grow the dragon fruit, which is VERY tasty! Look for growers in the western states for prickly pears. Good luck! TFGSF
Sorry for the late reply, I just saw your post. Where is this plant growing? South Florida? In a pot? Have the fruits always been dropping? Let me know a bit more and I may be able to help you with some suggestions.
hi question for you?! i am growing my plant in brevard fl like 3or4 county's above you. i got my when it was like 6 or 7 inch's and it only had one green part grow and now it has 3 parts and each one is about 2 and half feet tall. my question is i was talking to someone&they said the only way to have it pollinate is by having 2 plants growing right to each other so it can cross pollinate each other?! is that true? your video said bees and bats pollinate it. do i need a second plant or will 1 do?
I have a giant cactus that is swirly in growth and produces a prickles fruit that is red and is very much like a dragon fruit on the inside. It is white and full of tiny black seeds and tastes kind of like kiwi but less sweet. I am unable to find out information on it. Do you have any info that might be helpful to me?
Hi. Great video. I recently bought one and planted the seeds in a cup. Is it possible to grow one as a houseplant? I live in southeastern Michigan and cannot grow this outdoors. Thanks again, and i appreciate the video.
Surprisingly i have grow one here in France inside a glasshouse from a seed collected in a vietnam's fruit, it grow well and get adapted to temperature variable 8 to 50°C in this glasshouse, it give me now more fruits during september to november every year since 2007 i sowed it, up to 5-6 good big fruits if i help pollinated flower in time, but can also form fruits even without pollinating by hand. Flowers are incredible.
HI! They look like they are 45 gal pots. The bigger the pot the better the plant can grow and the better production you will get. Get the biggest pot you can afford, and make sure to plant in a well drained mix. TFGSF
You ought to be able to grow these cactus plants in Texas, just be sure to protect them from any freezes. I suggest that you contact your area Cooperative Extension agency to ask their advice, as they know your local conditions. Good luck!
It would be AMAZING if you guys did a video on your growers. I was looking into buying some fruit from your website but there are a lot of different growers and I wish there were pictures of the sizes to give (crazy people like me who can't picture how many fruits are in 10lbs) us an idea of what each size looks like.
Taste-wise, it's a very mild fruit. Only a touch of sweetness, but I like the soft texture of the flesh and the crunchy, gritty little seeds. Refreshing when chilled and great if u like mildly sweet fruits.
You have a sharp eye! Yes, that pineapple top was planted soon after the video was shot, and it is now growing very well. I should have a pineapple from it by early next year! You can do this too. Just place the top of the pineapple into the dirt about 2". Water. Afterward, give it as much sun and humidity as you can, and water when the dirt is dry. You should have a pineapple in a year or so with proper care. Check out the U of Fla publication on the Edis.ufl website. Good luck! TFGSF
You could certainly try to grow a dragon fruit in Zone 6, but it would need to come in when the temps got below 45-50. It would also need as much sun as you could give it. these cactus are tropical plants and are used to a lot of sun! Good luck!
I'm ridiculously jealous. What I wouldn't give to be in the perfect area where I could walk into the back yard & pick one of these off the tree....&by perfect area, in addition to climate, I ALSO mean the home, neighboring people, yard AND facilities. Is that too much to ask?
Hi! Do you guys do seeds? If so, how much does a couple of Dragot Fruit Seeds cost, and where and how long do they grow? How long do they last? And do you trade fruits and/or seeds? I could get some fruit or seeds to trade if you guys do that.
never thought of freezing it bet thats nice..one more thing to add to my fruit list ..can only get white ones here but i love them..( i'm in the uk so no chance fresh lol but a very pretty plant indeed like all cacti)
The length of time to get fruit depends upon how large the cutting is to start with, and what kind of care you give to it, but it is possible to get fruit in 2-3 years. Thanks for asking!
I have seen a couple in Jax, I haven't been watching them long enough to see it fruit. I have a small one growing & just left it out in the cold so far will see if it dies or not. I'm sure you would have to cover them & hope for not to long of freezing temps. The one in Arlington at the mental health place is solid 7' & bushy but I see them cover it when I ride by.( it looks like DF I'm 200' away driving)
If you did a status update about which fruits are available each month, then we would be reminded to place our order when the time comes. On my own, I might not remember to check back in June to see if the Anonna is available. Also, your videos have a great host. tasting Dragon fruit should be on everybody's bucket list. A must if you have never tried it.
Is the red always juicier? because when you cut it open it was very shiny and dripping on the white fleshed one.
Awesome - I purchased a couple of the darker fleshed dragon fruit at the Melbourne flea market last Friday. Mayhn were they delicious.
Dude cut that fruit open and it said "SURPRISE MUTHA FUCKA! I'M AN OREO COOKIE!"
LOL!
Hi sir, which part of florida has best climate for growing dragon fruit please?
I have several, but I did not plant them with the intention but rarely do they set fruit. Can I hand pollinate?
I have a question, I'm planning to grow the Dragon Fruit, but how do I tell which one is white and which one is red?
Always shave before cutting dragonfruit.

do you know what white and red variety that is?
Another thing, do you guys ship Prickly Pears? You know, from Prickly Pear Cacti? Thanks!
It should travel just fine to Georgia. Contact one of our growers to send you some tasty Florida dragon fruit!

I grow them in Ga
@TropicalFruitGrowers Mine all sprouted - very good germination rate. Now, I just need to figure out how to care for these little guys.
I think, scooping it with the spoon is much healthier, as this method retains much more juice!
if i'm from romania how can i order tropical fruits like that?
so cool, i wish i could have a dragon fruit plant of my own. :)
In my country dragon fruit is everywhere! hahahaha lol.
