  • This video is all about how to grow a lot of dragon fruit (pitaya) in just one container. This method is what I call the hang or grow down method where the plant is placed upon a stand or in my case a stump and left to drape down instead of being trained up a trellis or post.

    Had my first yellow dragon fruit today - DEEEELICIOUS!!! Oddly enough I had tried the red one a while back for the first time, and it was tasteless, so what a surprise when I tried the yellow one. Thanks for the tips, as at $5 US per fruit, somewhat out of my budget and will have to grow my own. Cheers!

    • @juliemcgugan1244
      @juliemcgugan1244 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try different varieties. Some, red or white are very tasteless. Others are out of this world. I can’t say that either is better than the other, they both taste great. But you have to find the best varieties. Some breeders seem to have gone for size and shelf-life, over brix (sugar content,) and taste. But if you are lucky enough to live near where they grow it, you may find that the smaller varieties actually taste better. That’s the case where I live.

    Love dragon fruit spent some time growing up on a nursery with a large dragon fruit plantation. Interesting you chose to grow the least common yellow spiny ones. I personally prefer the red flesh one they grow big and don't have spines

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Growing up on a nursery sounds like a great childhood to me! We do grow the red variety also but I actually prefer the yellow because they tend to set fruit easier here where we are and we love the slightly sweeter flavour but all dragon fruit a great in my opinion. Cheers :)

      hey, i was wondering, does the dragon fruit varieties that are sold in store self pollinate most of the time?
      i'm having a hard time finding someone who know about it.

    • @kathrynmat6857
      @kathrynmat6857 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh but the taste of the yellow variety is so superior. Maybe I just got a bad one, but I have only ever had one red one, and it was like eating moist paper, but LOVE the yellow.

    I think the hanging-down method makes a prettier dragon fruit plant. It reminds me a little of Christmas cactus or epiphyllums. Thanks for this informative video!
    I’ve never eaten fresh dragon fruit, just some mediocre dried fruit from the Trader Joe’s store. However, my son says the fresh fruit is delicious.

    Thank you for your videos!! You’ve helped me in my garden immensely and I’m grateful. I’ve got dragonfruit in Southern California, we have an invasive species of Argentine ant that are incredible at farming every kind of pest, they cover my dragon fruit and flowers with aphids. I have all my plants surrounded in cinnamon and have to blast off ants and aphids daily. These ants are relentless and really love my artichokes, dragonfruit, pomegranate and okra. They are my arch nemesis in the garden and we fight it out daily.

    We planted a dragon fruit a few years back and saw your video just now. Our dragon fruit is now 3 years old (never pruned, never bore fruit, never had flowers)
    Question:
    1) Shall I prune (not sure how it is spelled)?
    2) Can I start anew and use the cuttings from our dragonfruit plant?
    3) Shall we expose it to more sunlight (We have a small backyard and it has less than 8hrs of sunlight)?

    I'm pretty recent to discovering you - this video is great and you are great! =) This one is so helpful and I look forward to watching more! A couple years ago I was given a dragon fruit cactus by another gardener. I didn't know what to do with it so I just stuck it in a medium-sized pot along with my aloe plant. It has amazingly survived with quite a bit of neglect, but thanks to your video I am now ready to give it its own pot!
    We usually mix our own soil at a 1-1-1 ratio of compost, peat moss, and vermiculite. It seems to be pretty well-draining, but I don't know if it's good enough for dragon fruit. Does it sound to you like that would be ok? For some of my other succulents and cacti I have added some sand to the mix, but I don't know much about sand and am uncertain about the quality of sand we have, so I may want to avoid that for a food-producing plant. (We just bought a bag of play-ground sand from a local home-improvement store.)
    Also, because we have cold winters here in North Texas, in the U.S., and the 12-inch tall by 14-inch wide clay pot I have for the dragon fruit will probably be pretty heavy for moving in and outdoors, I'm thinking of just growing it indoors year-round, sitting on a bar stool as a stand. Do you have any advice about this? I have tropical hibiscus plants that are very happy during winter in a sunny corner (they do better inside in winter than outside in the summer heat!), so I'm hoping it will be ok for the dragon fruit, as well. Thank you again so much for this helpful video! =)

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any free draining medium is fine for DF as long as it gets some fertiliser and regular water. Yes, growing indoors with sun is a good idea for your climate but you will probably have to hand pollinate the flowers that's all. Merry Christmas 👍

      @@Selfsufficientme Cool - thanks so much! I thought it was interesting in your video that you specifically mentioned the ants in your container. As we speak (type), there are teeny tiny black ants crawling through the hibiscus blooms in my living room corner - they seem happy enough to stay in the containers when we bring them in from outside, so I'm actually wondering if something like that may happen with the DF. I once had a container of little pepper plants inside and when I finally dumped it out, at the bottom was a nest of the tiniest little black ants! As long as the ants aren't causing any harm to the plants and aren't taking over the house, I'm fine sharing my plants with them. =) Although I do have to keep an eye out for them harvesting and spreading aphids! I sometimes end up with some assassin bugs and other predators in my winter plant corner too, though - it's just a mini ecosystem over there during winter, haha.
      Would you happen to have any suggestions for a companion plant to go with the DF as it works on filling out the container?

    Great informative video. As soon as I saw how you had it planted I had an epiphany. My awesome Cambodian neighbor showed me how he was growing a bunch of Pitaya at his place. They were planted at the base of trees cut off at around chest height to act as something for them to climb. Ultimately, they would have done the cascade, but due to the fact we live in the very wet tropics, they did well for a time and then would get this horrible, skeletonizing rot that would start from the base and eat its way up the Pitaya's sections. They survived, but they were not in any shape to be thinking about producing fruits.
    I think how you have them up in pots *on top* of the stump may be the solution we need here for out particular climate. We get anywhere from 380-500cm of water in normal years here, so even if root water-logging isn't an issue for a particular species, the splatter effect the rain has of driving bacteria and fungi up the sides of everything exposed can sometimes have devastating effects if it goes on too long. I have no started my own Pitaya yet because I felt more research was in order, but after seeing your video I think I've got it.
    By the way... GREAT choice in cultivars! This yellow and the tiny, deep-purple "Voodoo Child" are my favorites. Incredible flavor in both!

      +Seeking Seeds thank you! Yes, it sounds like a good plan to at least give this method a go where you are because it's not the water that df hate (these plants love lots if water) it's the drainage and fungi caused by dampness that can hurt the vines. Growing diwn is definitely worth a try! Cheers :)

    I like your energetic presentation. I didnt know that you can grow dragon fruit this way. For me I just planted my dragon fruit on the fence using the steel bar as trellis. I was able to harvest 5 medium size fruits this year.

    Im agree with you.. Its far more better to plant dragon on the soil directly they get more soil nutrients than in the container if you use that wood as the climbing stand of the cactus is far better it will have more branch to grow, the more branch the more flower to produce and take note roots of the cactus is not stuck up when planted directly in the soil not like in the container i have a lot in the house dragon fruits but if you dont have enough space in the house its good to have that container.

    Subscribed. Thanks so much for your awesome videos! We watched your pineapple and dragonfruit videos, and will be applying your tips to our personal pineapple and dragonfruit plants. We've been curious about when to harvest our pineapples and also what to do with our small dragonfruit plant, and you've helped us.
    Also, great video production. I'm a youtuber as well, and it's obvious how much work goes into your videos. Really good and helpful stuff. Aloha.
