btw the getting stuck by having no ammo for a door conundrum is addressed in game as charging a shot with no ammo will fire 1 regular shot for portals/doors
Prime 2 still to this day has the best game soundtrack I have ever heard in my 28 years of gaming. Prime 2 Remastered hopefully is revealed in next months Direct.
A weird thing I've noticed: Almost everyone I know who's played Echoes struggled with either the Boost Guardian or the Spider Guardian, but rarely *both*. I think it's because one is a DPS race with a big emphasis on reflexes, and the other is a precision timing-puzzle that rewards patience - skills with minimal overlap.
Indeed. I loved the boost guardian. It was actually one the most fun bosses for me. Spider on the hand was frustrating because it was easy, but the controls for such precision was terrible. Thay said, it was a very cool idea. We god 3 morphball bosses and I thought all three were cool, one frustrating, one the other really difficult (power bomb) and one was REALLY FUN... forgot it's name, but it was the machine. Prime 2 put a lot of emphasis on the morphball and it was pretty fun.
Here's an elevator pitch: I think Metroid Prime 2 would be the best game to base a movie off of. And you don't necessarily need Metroid Prime 1 for context. Prime 2 kinda works on its own. And what's really great, is you could have an awesome B Plot about the Federation Toopers and their fight for survival. Told through video logs, and dialogue from other characters, like the Luminoth or maybe the Space Pirates. And it works to put the viewer in the shoes of Samus who's trying to uncover the whole thing... JUST like the game!! That cutscene of the Federations Last Stand against the Ing, is one of the most epic cutscenes in all of Metroid! Make a movie out of that! There are so many details in the world to scan, that you could draw from! The Federation Troopers are working with outdated equipment and bad leadership. The Space Pirates are opening portals to Dark Aether in the persuit of power, and dealing with the ramifications.. like corruption... Oh! and Dark Samus! And The Luminoth have largely sealed themselves away in Cryo Sleep to not get corrupted. Leaving only holograms, as a last cry for help.. Praying that a hero will emerge! Samus realizes she has to destroy this shadow entity corrupting Aether. Not just because she's stuck. But also because it could consume all life in the universe! ... And because the Luminoth remind Samus of the Chozo...
I love Echos. I think the devs had some extremely ambitious ideas that were toned down either by time constraints or by hardware limitations. A lot of the concept art seems to suggest that you could encounter possessed Luminoth and there were some interesting upside down versions of the light world structures. It’s also considerably more horrific than the first game. Samus is not only stranded, but she can’t even communicate with the Federation because of the dimensional interference. She has to desecrate the possessed bodies of the very GF soldiers she was tasked with finding. She encounters her doppelgänger and discovers that Metroid Prime somehow took her shape and found her in a different planet. That and she had to deal with the Dark world, which is basically a whole paranormal event, I can’t even imagine how she would even begin to explain that whole thing to the GF intelligence. Probably had to take some leave just to cope with the crazy things she saw.
Great video! Echoes is my fav in the Prime series and I loved that you pointed about seeing the creatures you saved from the planet you were playing on.
So when it comes to where you mentioned about the ammo being a problem for doors, they designed it where eve at 0 ammo for any beam you can charge a shot but it only shoots 1 bullet versus the 5 ammo it takes for full charge shot that way you can still open doors.
I consider Prime 2 to be peak metroid prime and the first full on metroid prime game. Prime 1 was great but it had the added baggage of being an experiment as well as the next big game after Super Metroid.
I accept that it's different enough from Prime 1 that some people won't like it, but I really did. I'd love to see it remastered -- mostly for the visual upgrade _and_ ease of access. I still have the discs of all three games. Packed away with the Wii somewhere. It'd just be easier to be on the Switch. Prime 3 would also be great (I think it's super doable to remove the motion controls) since I also very much enjoyed that game. But with Switch 2 likely approaching soon it seems it just won't happen.
Great video! Loved it! I beat Metroid Prime 2 just last a couple days ago, after being Prime 1 last year. I played both games pretty differently (getting almost 100% of items and close to 100% scans in Prime 2, while Prime 1 I 'only' got about 67% I believe), but enjoyed them differently too. Prime 1 had distinctive worlds, which I think I prefer, over the world in Prime 2 which felt smaller, but artificially increased in size due to most areas having a dark world equivalent too. The bosses in Prime 2 were a lot more difficult, I only died once in Prime 1 (during the end-boss), while I died multiple times in Prime 2. The boost guardian was tough at first, but once I knew what to do (don't be in a morph ball when the boss is in its morph ball), it became quite easy. The spider guardian was tough too and for some reason I had a hard time getting the power bomb, because I kept getting shot off the spider ball track. I ordered Metroid Prime 3 yesterday, so I should get it by the end of this week, really excited to play it!
One thing I wish they did was give the Ing their own unique architecture rather than just copying the Luminoth. For example, instead of the Hive being a darker version of The Sanctuary Fortress, it would look like a hive. This way switching from Light Aether to Dark Aether would be even more jarring since you would be switching from steril machinery to walls of organic Ing resin.
I'll point out in the trilogy version, since the Spring Ball ability is now present in both MP1 and 2 (while being absent in the Gamecube versions), this actually makes parts where bomb jumping is required a lot easier. For MP2 in particular, the Spider Guardian becomes a lot easier.
There was a lot of whiplash between the two games in tone and difficulty. Between that, a release date that corresponded with several major games (I believe Halo 2 was one, I forget the rest), the already small install base because there was no DVD player built into the GameCube, and the areas feeling drab and not popping (tonally okay but was an issue with the trailers that showed a lot of the dark world, Agon Wastes, and Temple Grounds), it was set up to not be that impressive. I distinctly remember enjoying it, being confused why not many people were playing it, and also thinking that this game was a lot less enjoyable than Metroid Prime 1. Prime 1 is just a comfort blanket that's always nice to return to. It took me quite a few play throughs (and getting older) before I started to realize that most everything the game was doing was a massive step up on Prime 1. Prime 2 is definitely the better game, best in the Prime series I'd argue, but I have a hard time saying it's my favorite over Prime 1.
It's weird how much less this game is talked about than its companions. While the world is more cohesive, I think the individual set pieces are not quite as memorable as MP1. My main memory of my initial playthrough as a kid was definitely the difficulty, and it took me ages to find the key monster by the ship. Having played through it again on the Wii trilogy release, I definitely agree that it is an amazing game that gets slept on.
Well of course MP1 was more memorable. It was basically mimicking Super Metroid. But this is also why I find MP1 to be rather lacking. I already have Super Metroid and it's a better game.
My main memories of this game are the bosses. They're all unique and most of them are memorable. The spider guardian was a fun way to do a morph ball boss. The Aloha Blogg is a pre-gravity suit underwater boss and I love it. But specially I love Quadraxis, easily my favorite boss in the Prime trilogy!
Never seen your channel or videos, but I enjoyed this one. My life as a Metroid fan really started with Prime when I got it with an indigo Gamecube for Christmas. I had heard of Metroid, seen it played, but wasn't a fan. Played through Prime1 multiple times, including learning some sequence breaking, and I've been hooked since. When Echoes released it was different, but for every right reason IMO. I loved the increased difficulty (except the Boost Guardian, screw him). The hunting for the keys was a fun end game quest, and I actually enjoyed Emperor Ing. Quadaxis is easily my favorite boss of the bunch though. MP3 was kind of 'eh'. I feel like it was a good game, but they pushed the motion controls way too much. And hunting for the batteries was just a huge freaking time sync, not to mention the increased backtracking just to showcase the 'you can fly her ship now' idea. Also hated the whole WiiConnect24 integration as it locked some side fun/easter-eggs away. Anyways, that's my experience with the Prime series -- huge fan, still playing through them, and eagerly waiting for *anything* MP4 related from Nintendo other than more delays. Enjoyed the video and subscribed, looking forward to your next one on MP3! Also, happy holidays!
when i first played prime 2 on gamecube, i never had any problems with any boss, except for the final boss. not the ing, i could never figure what i was supposed to do. so i eventually gave up. if only i picked up prime trilogy, cannot wait to play the game on switch and finally defeat her and go for 100%
Corruption is controversial for three big reasons: 1. It's more linear. It's not the most linear in the series but it's a bit more than first two primes. 2. It has more characters so it doesn't have as much of a feeling of isolation as Echoes or especially Prime 1. 3. The game centers around a mechanic called Hyper mode that some argue makes the game too easy. Me personally I don't think the game is too linear, I liked the world building it introduced, and I enjoyed Hyper mode so I think it's a good sequel personally.
Imho the biggest nerf in a Prime 2 boss when it was included in the Wii Trilogy is not the boost guardian, but the spider guardian. The whole boss battle was designed around using bomb jumps to move through the tunnels, which are slow and precise. The Wii port introduced the spring jump by shaking the wiimote and now that boss is a dumb-easy battle. I still prefer the original
I grew up playing Metroid on the SNES and the prime games on GameCube. Prime 2 was always my favorite. Took Prime, a great game, and improved on it in every way. The narrative and dialogue is still minimal, but in a tasteful way. New enemies and bosses were all pretty creative and fun to fight. Beam ammunition was great and added another layer of depth. Environments, tone and music were phenomenal. Prime 2's scan visor is also so much better holy crap.
Best game in the trilogy by far. Love 1 & 3 but they either felt too drawn out while backtracking in Prime 1 and repetitive boss fights or weren't as isolated and frantic as Prime 3. Prime 2 struck such a balance in being difficult, game design and overall atmosphere that it just blows it's competition out of the water.
Fun fact on the beam ammo. If you have zero ammo and you need to open a door. You can charge the beam to shoot a single shot (non charged shot) so that the door opens. Obviously that is not useful in combat
Prime 2 was always my favorite of the Prime series. I actually think Prime 1 is my least favorite. STill an amazing game, but...I dunno. Prime 2's story and atmosphere was always more fun for me. Prime 3's gameplay was just...fun. Yeah, they all have their issues, Prime 3 having some big ones. But just on what was really fun to play? Prime 2 and 3 beat out 1 for me.
Idk if you’ll see this but when you said you’re not sure if Light does more damage to dark Samus you’re right it doesn’t cause while Dark is in her name she’s not one of the Ing she’s technically a light creature
Speaking only from when I played this way too many years ago, there is only one critique I've had of the second Metroid Prime game when it popped up on Gamecube: Boss design. They felt way too similar in design at times (bit of the point considering the story) just with different abilities. Also until I upgraded to the Dark Suit, I hated the dark world lol.
While I like prime 1 the best I do think 2 is a great sequel. I see your point how the biomes being similar can make the game more realistic, but as a kid I got lost quite a few times because a lot of the areas look too similar especially in the dark world. Seriously you got a swamp, a desert, a temple ground, and those 3 areas in particular look near identical at times. They could have used a little bit more color at least in the light world.
If it’s so great… how come there is not a switch version out yet? What is taking them so long? I just wish to know what their plan is. I really do want this and MP3 to be out already. If MP4 is to be out by the Switch 2 releasein 2024, this game should have had its rerelease already. Anyone know what’s going on?
The thing is that in the grand sheme of things prime 2 doesnt really matter (besides dark samus getting the light suit). Just like prime hunters and other m the events basically exist in a microcosm and barely affect the events of other games. You could easily just go from prime 1 to prime 3 without missing anything. This is why I personally never cared much about the game. Its so different from everything else while also being completely skippable. Its a great game but I really dont think it deserves being called a mainline metroid title because it simply doesnt contribute enough to progressing the story.
Just finished the damn thing on my Wii. Am I the only one, who dislikes Echoes? It is a good game, but not as great as Prime 1. For me, Metroid games never felt like an "epic adventure", more like a camping hike - cozy and picturesque, but with reasonable hardships end endurance. Prime 2: Echoes is so dark, mangy and dirty, it feels like a dumpster dive, not a travel! Prime 1 left me wanting more, but Prime 2 made me bored, and I abandoned my first playthrough right after getting the spider ball. I switched to Super Mario Sunshine instead - It is so bright, clean and relaxing, as if having a vacation! I wonder if that is by design. 🤔
btw the getting stuck by having no ammo for a door conundrum is addressed in game as charging a shot with no ammo will fire 1 regular shot for portals/doors
Iirc the game even tells you this when you're out of light/dark ammo. Or maybe in the description when you get the means, I'm not sure
@ddnava96 yeah, it's in the logbook for the beams.
Echoes was always my favorite of the three. It has the best atmosphere and boss fights.
Not just a sequel is the best in the series after super Metroid.
I hope prime 4 can live up to prime 2, that is my biggest fear is that it wont 😭
This just makes me want a HD Remaster of Echoes even more.
Yep and Corruption also. I refused to buy MP1 remastered without the other 2 getting the same treatment.
favorite prime game no question
The Dark Beam actually does more damage to Dark Samus than the Light Beam because she isn’t a being from Dark Aether.
Seriously, it does? I'm keeping that in mind for my current new playthrough.
Prime 2 still to this day has the best game soundtrack I have ever heard in my 28 years of gaming. Prime 2 Remastered hopefully is revealed in next months Direct.
Assuming Prime 4 won't be there
@@robertkenny1201 Seeing as there was no proper Direct in February....

From what I can recall, neither boss particularly flummoxed 10 or 11year-old me, but the Chykka, that boss took me FOREVER.

Great video! Echoes is my fav in the Prime series and I loved that you pointed about seeing the creatures you saved from the planet you were playing on.
I need more Metroid content to consume as we get closer to the release of 4, and remasters of 2&3. I appreciate this video, so I've subscribed, gg.

Hell yea it is! Quite challenging but amazing amount of content. I would die for a remastered Prime 2
Prime was so pure and nostalgic, but Echoes has such a beautiful weird eerie vibe. Love this game. I listened to the Title Theme so many times

To me, its Perfect!!!
love your Metroid videos man keep at it
Best Metroid game.
Great analysis!
Everyone in 2004 was hyped for Halo 2, I felt like I was the only one hyped for Metroid Prime 2
3:13 Anyone else noticed how they basically took the premise straight from the Super Mario Bros live action movie?
Prime 2 was always my favorite of the Prime series. I actually think Prime 1 is my least favorite. STill an amazing game, but...I dunno. Prime 2's story and atmosphere was always more fun for me. I think the spider guardian was balanced around the wii version where you can jump without bombs. Very annoying on gamecube.
The best prime game out of the 3, it fixed most issues of prime 1, while not introducing any new problems like prime 3
Keep the videos up bro

why do you keep switching between ee-ther and ei-ther lmao
Good video

the difference between Prime 1 2 and 3 is similar to the difference between Terminator 1 2 and 3
This game dunks on prime 3 and you can’t change my mind
Did you or are you going to talk about Prime 3? And if you haven’t made plans to… will you?
I was never able to play the second or third game (too busy only playing Halo 2, back then).
The thing is that in the grand sheme of things prime 2 doesnt really matter (besides dark samus getting the light suit). WHERE IS THE REMASTER NINTENDO?
😔 P R O M O S M
This game is mixed bag. There's some good stuff, but also a lot of garbage.
Echoes is the best
