      among many other things, the way it rearranges some of the typical Metroid item progression. Giving Samus a slide move but withholding the Morphball for quite some time rather than it being like the first thing you get. A lot more underwater exploration before you get the Gravity Suit, while Spin Booster and Space Jump are allowed to function without it. In a way very much like how you used the Screw Attack in the Prime games to cross wide gaps.
      In fact while it doesn't really acknowledge the Prime games as usual, there are some nice mechanical references. Storm Missiles being the most obvious, but also being able use the Grapple Beam to pull away stuff from some enemies.

      The grab counters on bosses. So satisfying. Good lord, pulling them off every single time on every single boss even Raven Beak. I kicked his ass once I got to see how his attack patterns work. Took a few tries since I was new to the phase shift ability combined with the screw attack/space jump. Really helps when fighting his winged form.

    There is a very cool lore detail regarding the brains. It is never explained why they contain the "strange" energy to perform the omega canon, or why samus can simply absorb it. For that you have to recall the battle with mother brain in super metroid, where the baby metroid was able to absorb the hyper beam from mother brain and transfer it to samus when it heals her.
    Samus now having awaken metroid abilities can do it herself from the mother brain-like computers.

      @_ch1pset 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Counter argument: The hyper beam is actually specific to the metroids, not the brains. The baby transfers it's own special ability, the hyper beam, to Samus in Super. In Dread, Samus is endowed with the hyper beam after fully transforming into a metroid.

    • @diegog1853
      @diegog1853 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      @@_ch1pset To be honest I think it could be either way, I don't try to claim the hyper beam is exclusive to the brains. It must likely is simply a manifestation of samus getting an incredible amount of energy into her suit.
      Ultimately It is open to interpretation, but I do think it is implied in super metroid that the energy absorbed by the baby from mother brain was transfered to Samus and that is why she aquired the hyper beam.
      And that is what is happening with the brains, with the only difference that the energy is not big enough, so its just the omega beam, and the energy can be acquired by samus by herself with her awaken metroid powers.
      So I still think it is a reference to super metroid. I don't think it changes much.

    • @_ch1pset
      @_ch1pset 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@diegog1853 I also might point out the color of the beam is very telling. The hyper beam is characterized by the rainbow colors, and the ability to destroy most blocks. In Dread, it's not really rainbow per se, but it's close enough and also destroys most blocks. It's explicitly clear in Dread that it was the metroid transformation that gave samus the hyper beam power, so we can infer that in Super, the baby was transferring a part of itself to Samus, not Mother Brain.
      All that said, I think the ability for Samus to absorb the omega cannon power from the central units is easily explained by them being powered by aeon, or the simple fact that it is chozo tech, which Samus has always been able to absorb to gain powers from canonically.

  • @SnipeMD
    @SnipeMD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +253

    Two other things:
    1: If you have extremely good memory and attention to detail, Raven Beak's first battle with Samus were he beats her actually shows you exactly how to beat the first phase of his final boss fight, even the exact moment when to parry him.
    2: Raven Beak's X-Parasite infected Spear Soldiers actually serve a darker purpose. If we go off the game's ending and you pay close attention, you'd notice that every time Samus defeats one of the Spear Soldiers they drop a red X-Parasite and Samus has no choice but to absorb it. We know that Samus' Metroid DNA reacts to seeing or fighting Raven Beak's species of Chozo, so in a calculated move Raven Beak actually engineered a situation where Samus would constantly absorb the DNA of his Chozo soldiers which would continually agitate her Metroid DNA to kick start her metamorphosis.

      Yeah I kind of assumed that as well. I just knew Raven Beak was behind all of this mess. Still, I have a reason to believe there will be something else Samus will have to deal with in this version of the franchise. Metroid Prime was mostly focused on Prime becoming Dark Samus and trying to corrupt Samus in the third game. Turns out, Samus was able to adapt to the corruption and used it as a weapon and in the end, cured herself by ridding the universe of Dark Samus. As far as we know, at least.

    My favorite thing about Dread was definitely the way they convey Samus being a stoic badass throughout the game using JUST body language. When she meets Kraid again, she's brimming with confidence because she's fought him before and knows everything about him. Beating Corpious is satisfying because it conveys "this is just Tuesday to me" vibes. Just god, man, all the cut scenes in this game are perfection.
    I read this one article complaining about how "Samus should smile more" when she sees Quiet Robe for the first time because it's the first time she's seen a live Chozo since childhood. Granted, yes, that is a revolution. But she conveys it through body language that's she's relaxed around him and just speaking in his language, something she never forgot from childhood, is respect. That, to me, speaks volumes over a fking smile.

    It’s interesting to think that Samus is Metroid to the core even more than this. As established in the manga, Metroid means “ultimate warrior” in Chozo. And even though she’s had Metroid DNA since Fusion, she becomes the true Metroid when she defeats Raven Beak, the Chozo’s previous greatest warrior.

    Two of my favorite details are both concerning Raven Beak.
    The first is that every boss' intro cutscene subtly shows you how to damage them, but Raven Beak doesn't have anything like that. Instead, the game's intro cutscene shows you one of the methods to damage his first phase. During their first encounter, Samus ducks under Raven Beak's shockwave attack and, using a counter, shuts his lightning armor offline temporarily. This allows Samus to damage his armor with a missile.
    The other is that Raven Beak uses the Lightning Armor and Beam Burst Aeion abilities from Samus Returns in his first and second phases respectively.
    This game is so full of little details that make it an absolute joy playing through multiple times.

      Also just the fact that his suit has a very big and noticeable arm cannon and shoulder pads. Because of course her suit would be designed similarly to that of a Chozo Warrior. Might even be a sly nod to explain how her suit is so compatible with every piece of Chozo tech she happens to find.

The arm cannon seems like a special thing, you don't see it on the regular X parasite infected Chozo or many other places really (the robot Chozo are the one exception I can think of). So regular Chozo have no weapons tied to their suit like that, their weapons are separate. Most of the time it's a lance or a spear, manga Grey Voice uses a canon of sorts
      Makes me wonder, if Samus didn't get the DNA donation from Raven Beak but instead some other Mawkin, and had no arm canon... We'd have a potential lance wielder instead, who could find a canon to use later on when it comes to the games. That'd be something

If you follow along with what Raven Beak and Quiet Robe say and read the subtitles, you can make out that certain chozo words mean certain real words. The alphabet used (the weird triangles) also isn't gibberish, and can be deciphered into the chozo language. The best thing about the Control Unit/Mother Brain connection is that lore-wise it makes complete sense. Mother Brain was created originally by the Chozo as a means of better controlling the Metroids, and in this game we can reasonably assume that the control units were created by Quiet Robe (or the Thoha in general) to control the EMMI... So it makes complete sense that they would share similar designs as they were created by the same population with similar purposes.

      If that is the case then why did Raven Beak destroy the first Central Unit? I think it is more likely that the Central Units were built by humans to replicate Mother Brain. @@see.eye.2361 Other than the research and 'taking control' bit, my only other possible guess for Raven Beak destroying an E.M.M.I. (that they already had control of in this guesses case) and the Central Unit would be to test Samus. He did want the Metroid DNA, yes, but he also wanted to see what it could do and if he could get more out of it. So chances are it is to give her more of a fighting chance, to gather her footing and get the 'training' going. If she fails the E.M.M.I.'s win gets him what he wants. If it succeeds then he might just be getting a stronger warrior at the end
      Just a possibility
      I doubt it'd be out of care or affection. Raven Beak did spare Samus at the Start but we don't necessarily get a 110% confirmation as to why that was. Was it because he saw a potential for more and got greedy? Didn't have the tools necessary on his person and had to do the next best thing? Or maybe he had to back off to not receive the end of Dread treatment right then and there. Could even have been the teeniest tiniest bit of care because he did donate his DNA for her and all that - although it's still much more likely that he saw her fully as an investment rather than anything more, and 'caring traits typical to likes of humans' or something just don't exist within him
      There never really was a chance for him to say it outright. But either he just knows of the concept of it (as "ADAM" he constantly tells Samus to 'be careful' etc.) and uses it to seem more natural/tries to imitate a relationship he knows not enough of, to seem like 'he's there for her' - or it's some genuine care of wishing her luck (which again, I doubt but can't lock out completely)
      It's a bit of a shame that the final fight ended up on getting the X involved, I'd have loved to hear humbled Raven Beak speak. Either try gathering himself for one last intimidation attempt, or try talk it out, as a cunning backstabbing plan or because he'd realize his defeat
      There's still plenty of questions, I hope we hear of Raven Beak in the future still even if he's preeeetty much dead

After a long battle with multiple phases, Samus is left helpless after an unavoidable attack, only to be saved by a Metroid that absorbs the power of the final boss and gives Samus access to the hyper beam, which she then uses to obliterate the boss, triggering an escape sequence where the poor helpless enemies have to face Samus at the most powerful she’s ever been and it all ends when she reaches her ship.

    Seriously?!
    No! ZDR-Network-Hosted ADAM was Raven Beak's attempt to empower Samus by giving her hints on where to go next & how to proceed so her DNA would be of even better use to him.
    He then pointed her towards monsters he had hoped could dispatch her for him.
    Then, he chickened out & tried to discourage her from even seeking him out anymore.
    Then, as a last ditch effort to avoid confrontation, he had "ADAM" straight tell Samus SHE was the threat to the galaxy & should therefore simply giveup.
    Samus knew the entire time because of ADAM referring to her as "Samus" instead of "Lady" & chose that last conversation to end the facade figuring she must've been waaaay to close for Raven Beak's comfort.

We see that in the final battle, were it not for Samus's powers flaring up beyond his expectations, he would hack kicked her ass in a fight, since the only thing that stops him from outright winning is Samus's powers suddenly activating to such a degree that she transforms.

I think the game even references this fact, since it was the first Metroid game to provide lore stations, which I thought was really cool, gives you an in-depth look at the Space Pirate society.

      Prime is the same setting, it's earlier in the series and with Ridley appearing in Metroid II on 3DS as Meta-Ridley it shows that after he was defeated he was most likely cloned (Or Reborn the way he is in Other M) and that's why he's no longer a cyborg. However this does most likely imply that since he didn't show up this time, Ridley is either dead for real after the events of Fusion, or possibly just didn't show up because there were no space pirates here. I do like the implication that Kraid may have been in prison this whole time and that's why we haven't seen him for a while... XD

Same for Kraid.
      But if the knitting is that the space pirates are rather just Raven Beak's underlings, it would mean with Raven Beak dead, that there is no more high command for the Pirates if any exist since the prime games seems to be hunting down the space pirates along with destroying the phazon... waiting for Prime 4 to see what happens next.

    One of my favorite parts about Metroid Dread was how well the game made you feel like a badass. The game is pretty difficult so as I progressed through the game not only did I unlock more weapons and abilities that made me stronger but I was improving as well. Near the end enemies that were previously a pain to kill were a breeze and I felt like a certified badass.
    This has to be one of my favorite quality of games in general, and one of the reasons I love The Last of Us so much. Running around as Joel as an experienced zombie veteran and kicking some ass was always a great time.

    For instance, I highly doubt that Raven Beak was the only Mawkin left after the initial X infestation, there’s likely still a population of Mawkin somewhere on ZDR or in orbit, maybe in that empty top right corner of the global map? In the last Chozo Archive image you can see a cloaked Chozo figure in the background holding a strange forked weapon that we never see in game. Hanubia the the name of the area on the surface of ZDR, where Samus’ gunship is landed, I’m sure most of you who have reached this area have noticed the docked Chozo ships hovering over the buildings, what you probably haven’t noticed are that those same ships are nowhere to be found during the final escape sequence. Speaking of which, it was never really explained why the planet exploded, perhaps it was detonated by some third party, a person or group of people that used the Ships on Hanubia to escape? Idk dude just spitballing here.

    Something that was a little odd to me was the iconic self destruction countdown at the end. I've only played through normal difficulty, but when you're clamoring through enemies and obstacles, I was getting pretty conscious that I'd taken a lot of damage in my haste, but then I realized something: *THERE'S NO ENERGY TANK DISPLAY.* Was wondering from hard difficulty players if this was the case. Because when I noticed that, I just decided to run straight through and not care about obstacle bumps. They're ultimately there just to eat away at the time you have to escape ZDR.
    I think it's intentional. For one, it saves on gamer frustration of repeated game overs without a solid save point. Secondly, that's just how overpowered Samus became as a full on Metroid. And lastly, I theorize that when that X parasite at the end "helped" Samus revert to normal, it may have just become the most powerful X yet, possibly absorbing enough Metroid Suit Samus energy to survive ZDR's explosion and come back as a new menace.
