  • A review of the 1905 Bonehill Britannia air rifle, an Edwardian Bullpup springer that was way ahead of it's time.
    Including plenty of shooting and accuracy testing.
    Also a bit of background on early 1900's airgun shooting in Great Britain, and the birth of the modern spring piston air rifle.

    Fred Cox was my great uncle. The gun that my father had was Freds test bed. My late brother had his right thumb nearly amputated by the barrel flying back unexpectedly! Freds Gem, is in my gunbox. Still works and in pretty good nick for it's age, and i've the original negs of the Britania Quartet photos. Patrick Reid

      Hello Patrick,
      it's very nice to hear from you.
      I was contacted by Michael Roberts a year or so ago who said his wife was the great niece of Fred Cox. We believe the fantastic photo of the Cox brothers was originally supplied by Fred's nephew, Mr Colin Reid, (your uncle?) Mr Bernard Hinchley spoke to Fred Cox about his air rifle frequently and passed that knowledge on to others, and we are always keen to find new information on the history of Fred Cox's development of the Britannia but there is very little info out there.
      To hear you still have his test bed Gem is very exciting, does it look like an ordinary Gem or has it been modified?
      I used one of my Britannia's fitted with peep sights only last weekend and it shoots very well, and it always generates a lot of interest with other collectors.
      If you go to my channel page and click 'more about this channel' you'll find my contact email, please get in touch on there and we can talk further.
      Thanks,
      Matt

      Hello Michael,
      great to hear that members, or extended members of the Cox family may have seen this video.
      The fantastic photo of the Cox brothers was originally supplied by Fred's nephew, Mr Colin Reid, (your wife's uncle?) and Mr Bernard Hinchley spoke to Fred Cox about his air rifle and passed that knowledge on to others.
      I was shooting another Britannia I have today at an airgun club and several people commented on what a beautiful, clever design it was, and how nice it is to shoot. I have many vintage air rifles now and the Britannia is still my favourite. I have since found out that BSA's of the time had a max power of about 5.5ftlbs, so the 7.5 ftlbs of the Britannia really is a marvel.
      If your wife has any info or documentation about fred Cox she would like to share please let me know as their is precious little surviving as the records for C.G Bonehill were destroyed in the 1960's. And may I ask, is the rifle you have one that was featured in the photo of Fred and his brothers? ie; with nickel plated sections or the finger spur protruding from the grip?
      Someone is planning to write a book about the Britannia air rifle so any new info would be very welcome.
      Many thanks for saying hello.
      Matt

      @@dkjngl1 Colin Reid was indeed my wife's uncle. Sadly he passed away some years ago. Did you know he worked for the Secret Service during the Cold War? He was the original "Q" as in the Bond films, at least that was his role, he wa not named "Q". My wife was fascinated by your video and I think she might well have more stuff. I'll get it to you if she has. You commented on the power of the Cox's patent. I can tell you that it was nicknamed "Cox's Cannon". Kind regards. Mike.

      Hi Mike,
      Great to hear that Fred Cox’s great niece found the video of interest, that is very gratifying.
      Learning it was called the ‘Cox Cannon’ is already very good info! Thank you.
      Please feel free to contact me and I would be very happy to pass information on to the gentleman who is writing the book, and also incorporate it into an upcoming video I’m planning on my other Britannia with peep sights.

      Hello again, I wonder if you can help shed some light on a Cox family conundrum please?
      How are the Cox boys related (if at all) to Cox & Son, pellet makers of Lozells, Aston. Birmingham?
      It’s a mystery to airgun historians that we’d love to know.

    This the very best, if not the only, presentation of a very rare air rifle the Bonehill Brittannia I am very much surprised by the accuracy of the Brittannia air rifle especially as it appears to eclipse an already highly accurate air rifle. The power output of this relatively small rifle at 7.5 ft lbs today makes you wonder how they performed when new.
    Many thanks for an excellent video which will give those interested a detailed insight of a very unique and unusual air rifle.

    Never realised that the Britannia was such a great air rifle, considered it to be under par to the BSA most probably to its being more compact looking like a toy or junior airgun and not a serious contender and better than the BSA designs. Looking at the advert its listed with the junior class of airguns which doesn't give it credit if it was advertised with the BSAs.

    • @dkjngl1

      Hi,
      Before I acquired this one the word on the collecting street was that they weren’t very good. Luckily a mate had one and let me try it so I knew they had potential. In the 1905 book ‘The complete Airgunner’ by R.B Townsend this type of rifle was discounted as inaccurate due to the angle of the cylinder/barrel and that the inline L J BSA design was the only one worthy of consideration. I wonder if this opinion has been read and repeated for the last 115 years… one caveat though is that this particular example has barely been used so it is easy to adjust the trigger to a safe & light let off. Most are much harder to set up and if you have to set a worn trigger & sear to a safe letoff on a heavily used Britannia it may have to be set a bit heavy, which will definitely effect accuracy. You don’t want the sear to slip while you’re cocking it, that’s pretty terrifying! Cheers mate.

    • @chrisabraham8793
      @chrisabraham8793 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did put a post on the Airgun BBS forum the other day after watching this video about how the Britannia design if carried on would have been a great air gun of today with modern technology on par with the HW. Great feature of the two power settings way ahead of its time. I wondered how the Britannia would have performed in .22. I did notice that the pellets just dropped in rather than push fit into the barrel like most break barrel airgun, would a flush fitting pellet at the breech perform better than loose fit. Now to go and find one, i am now hooked getting one to use for the collection. It would be great if someone made a repro, wouldn't take much using modern tech CNC etc. Great videos keep up the good work.

    • @dkjngl1
      @dkjngl1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Someone who saw my video set about making a couple of modern repro's with improved triggers and adjustable gas rams. Interestingly even with the gas ram pressure set as high as possible, while still keeping a comfortable cocking effort, the power was pretty much the same as cox's original at around 7.5 ftlbs. Only after adjusting the transfer port and piston wieght he got it up to 9ftlbs.
      forum.vintageairgunsgallery.com/britannia-c-g-bonehill/modern-britannia-copy/
      forum.vintageairgunsgallery.com/britannia-c-g-bonehill/second-modern-britannia-copy/
      using the info he gleaned from these experiments I tried something similar with a scruffy Britannia I was setting as a 'Britannia Supertarget' and got it to 8ftlbs and with a very soft shot cycle. ( check 'tuning a vintage airgun' on the channel)
      I would love someone like Weihrauch to try something like this, although BSA tried in the 1920's and couldn't improve it.
      The pellets fall into the barrel to about 5mm below the breech face, and although that technically increases the transfer port length it doesn't seem to affect either accuracy or consistency. On the scruffy 'Britannia Supertarget' the pellets just drop in flush with the breech so there's some variation between rifles
      I've since heard that Bonehill used to pick out certain Britannia's from a batch and put them aside for special finishing and these were used as factory prizes for various competitions. This one was apparently an ex display model and may have been one of these factory prizes but I doubt I will ever be able to find out more.
      I have done some work on the 'Britannia Supertarget' sear unit to get a lighter and consistant trigger. In combination with the click adjustable no.8 rearsight and no.19 hooded ring foresight it's capable of hitting a 40mm FT target at 55 yards from a sitting position! Crazy accuracy possibilities from that, I'll do a video of it in action in the summer.
      Cheers

      @@dkjngl1 I wondered how this air rifle would have faired in .22 being a more efficient calibre even though this gun didn't come in .22. It would be interesting to see how the .25 cal performed, i assume not too well.

    I would suggest sweating the diopter rear sight to the tube, do not drill, that sounds like a disaster! This rifle is very beautiful and well designed. I can only theorize, but the way the tube runs at an angle seems beneficial to the recoil behavior!? The basic design probably had it's most success (in the quality airgun marked) with the LP53! And thanks for posting this presentation, I've only look at these in magazines and books before. Watching it in action ads many dimensions!

    • @dkjngl1
      @dkjngl1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I have fitted a diopter to another Britannia and you are correct, drilling and tapping only works if you do it in the thick part up near the breech, which is too far away from the eye. I bonded the sight halfway down the cylinder and it’s fantastic. I also turned the ‘project’ Britannia with fantastic results. I’ll do a vid on it soon. They are great rifles 👍

    • @CandidZulu
      @CandidZulu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dkjngl1 I just come to think about the IZH61 rifle, that is in fact too built to the same general outline. So the design is not totally dead. Gotta hand it to the Russians, they are very savvy engineers, always had a nose for a good design! I think the omission of a diopter stud or rail on the tube, and a proper to stage trigger, via two screws in the trigger, are very unfortunate in the Britannia.

      It’s not too bad in this one, but you are right it does have a bit of a Bark! Although I would never alter the original condition of this one (still has the original flat section spring) If you watch my ‘tuning a vintage air rifle’ vid you can see how I did this on my scruffy Britannia project model, which now has a very soft firing cycle. wish a modern day version could be made. can you imagine? with a gas-ram piston, in 5.5 or 6.35. with everything properly sealed! I've noticed its doesnt have a seal around the breach

    • @dkjngl1
      @dkjngl1  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It has been done! A friend of mine on mainland Europe made two gas Ram prototypes from scratch which closely followed the original Britannia patent. Interestingly he used the same diameter cylinder as the original and Gas Rams that you can change the pressure in. Even experimenting with different sized transfer ports, piston weights and gas ram strength he couldn’t get much more power than the original Britannia. Fredrick Stanley Cox knew what he was doing! The barrel locks down on the leather breach seal and seals well btw.

      @@ReavinBlue It is but the spring needs to be relatively soft otherwise the cocking effort is too strong. Something to do with the geometry, feels like you have less leverage than with a normal break barrel as the pivot of the Britannia's barrel is much closer to you when you cock it. Interesting, never thought about that before.

  • @reformationcatapults9283
    @reformationcatapults9283 ปีที่แล้ว

    You mentioned that the gun was all blued steel but I've heard that parts of it were made from cast iron. Just wondering if you had heard this before as I've owned a Quackenbush in 5he past that had cast Iron parts and they are prone to cracking.
    I'd love to own one of these guns but am now wary of anything cast iron.

    • @dkjngl1
      @dkjngl1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, you are right the grip/cocking arm piece is cast, but I’m not sure if it is cast iron (carbon content +2%) or cast steel (-2% carbon)
      I have never heard of this part cracking though, so I think they are pretty durable. The blueing finish on these cast parts has to be different to the polished steel finish. You see old Webley service air rifles where the cast trigger block has been reblued and will turn a plummy red colour over time.

      @@dkjngl1 , I think the spring was probably more efficient in those days. In 0.22 calibre, it may have ahd a little more power (energy). It would be interesting to know. You said you would come back to estimate the original power later in the video, but you didn't.

    • @dkjngl1
      @dkjngl1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We can’t estimate the original power, but back then the BSA chief designer asked the Britannia’s inventor Fred Cox why the Britannia was so much more powerful than the 1905 BSA’s, and he told them it had something to do with the spring. I’m sure the technical specifications were more complicated than just the spring, but it shows us the Britannia was more powerful. (This account is from someone who knew the Cox brothers) All the people I know who have a Britannia get around 7.5 ftlbs out of them, even with modern springs. There are stories of more powerful ones but not from anyone I have spoken to directly. My friend has a 1905 BSA standard, and with a modern standard spring and new piston seal it does 5.5ftlbs. They soon improved the design and later pre-war BSA’s were much more powerful, getting up to 10ftlbs.
      Trust me, 7.5ftlbs is quite powerful for a 1905 rifle.
