This video shows my trip going to get my new (old) tractor. It is new to me, and I hope it will last for many years to come. This tractor will be helping around the house as we continue to grow our small sawmill business and do general homestead type stuff around the house.

Can never get over people driving tractors without a roll bar or cab. Nice tractor all the same. Family had two Ford 4000. Hauled silage with them.
These Ford 4000 tractors are very good tractors! We've had ours about 40 years... I just had the motor completely rebuilt and replaced a lot of parts... Those wires below the steering wheel are your neutral safety for the transmission... Your tractor ID is below the solenoid on the right side of the transmission case, usually difficult to read... You may need a 3 point pump since it settles... That is directly under the seat assembly and is a two person job to removed and is timed... And please don't use Fram oil filters; they are garbage!!! You got a very nice buy. She's definitely a looker. I have a 1970 Ford 4000 with the 3cyl diesel and it's been absolutely the best tractor. They've always been very tough, and very reliable. I wouldn't trade mine for the world. Very nice find sir!

I owned a Ford 4000 (much earlier model) once. Worked on it as much as I used it... got really tired of that! As for the tires they are fine. I have an old tractor that I'm working on, and you can just about see the air in the tires and they work just fine... The hydraulics are problematic that they leak down like that... much easier to talk about than to fix I think you will find out. In general it looks OK... clean it up replace seals, hoses here and there. Keep an eye on the radiator / cooling system... don't want to run her hot.
So here is one single most important piece of advise... a tractor will kill you. If you didn't grow up with one, you are already at a disadvantage. Noticed you were proud the PTO worked... that is probably the single most dangerous piece... no un-tucked shirts, and definitely no women with long hair anywhere around it. 50 years experience in a trauma center at my house... trust me a tractor can/will kill you, if you are lucky... they do worse things to some people... just don't EVER take shortcuts or push it beyond what it should really do. Can do lots of work with that thing... but it demands huge respect! A good rule of thumb is not to get off the seat if the PTO is turning.
Grew up on my grand-parents' farm with a Massey-Ferguson and another tractor that I forget the brand of right now. I would say, a tractor *can* kill you if not careful, but just about any machine can.
Imagine using the PTO to power an antique small mill with a 30-some inch wide blade. *That* *will* kill you if you are not careful. The mill was belt driven by the PTO, too.
I have a 1967 Ford 3400 industrial loader tractor. Love that thing!!! I live in Greencastle Indiana.
I have a Ford 4000, bought it used, it had a number of small things that needed fixing, but it is an honest tractor and in a general sense, easy to fix and maintain.

The painted filter is a fuel filter not hydrologic.
I see a fram oil filter, my opinion is to Chang it as soon as possible! I know alot of people who say that the fram filter will stop up and rob the engine of lubricant. Ask at your auto parts store about the fram filter and most will say that it will stop up. Because fram has finer microns than others, which will stop up faster.
As for the crack on the front, if it don't bother you it can be left. If you want to fix it, I would use fiberglass resin after putting a brase or mechanical stop to prevent further cracking.

I grew up on a 4000 almost identical to that. First tractor my dad farmed with and he gave it to me when I started farming on my own. I just got done today splitting the tractor and putting new seals on the input shaft. They don't make alot of horses but they are solid old tractors. Mine sat for a couple years before I had time to split it and it fired right up after being put back together like it had never sat.
I have the same tractor. Purchased it last May. I use it primarily to grade our road for now. My hydraulic control seal (right side bottom if you are seated, it has a knob on it) was leaking- I had it fixed for $150. I eventually found out that it had a 'hard starting issue' it seemed like it was flooding out like a gas engine. I found out on TH-cam there is a valve under the tank that can be closed off-similar to a dirt bike. I started shutting off that valve after using it and turning it back on and the hard starting issue went away!
Like you stated there's plenty info on TH-cam even if they are working on Ford 2000 or 3000 many of the drain plugs and sight screws are in the same locations. Also there is an oil bath filtration system between the radiator and the front grill- mine was filthy, be sure to clean it and refill with oil. I like the name Samson. I haven't named mine yet.
The biggest advantage to these older tractors, is that they are simpler than the modern one, and don't have the complicated emission systems and computers that may render a modern tractor unserviceable. As long as parts are available and a shop can fix it, a restoration may be well worth the investment. And yes, I have operated a John Deere 2010, an Allis Chalmers 190XT, a Case 530, a Case 930, and a couple 2-cylinder John Deeres: A Model A and a Model B. Many of them are still in operation today!

We have the same 4000 tractor. We mainly use it for grading the driveway and dragging trees around the property. Looks like a great buy. Tough tractors that work well.

Hey! You had the same smile I have when my tractor starts up! I’ve had it a few years, but I can’t help it, every single time it starts I smile 😀. You have yourself a very good tractor! I think you got a good one no deal breakers for me just maintenance fix what you see and maintain it.
The painted filter is a fuel filter, it has a primary and secondary. Tires will last along time with small cracks. Old tractors will leak a bit, fix the big ones. Key is maintenance and those old Fords will work for you for a long time.
You should name it Henry.

We have a Ford 4000 on our farm my grandfather bought it used many years ago. We’re about to tear it down and replace the rear end. They are fairly simple machines to work on. They are also very tough and rugged machines. Hydraulics will leak or always have hint of oil on it that’s just their nature, but I’d definitely replace the hoses. The tires still have some life in them. Overall it looks like a solid machine that should last you many years if you take care of it. We don’t put enough hours on ours every year so we change the fluids atleast once a year. Still is a solid tractor.

roll over protection system or ROPS for your tractor its an after
market roll bar that you add for your protection.

As long as it does what you need it to do and the price was right, none of things you pointed out are major. I would however change the oils (motor, differential and trans)
I have a ford 4000 as well these r very tough tractors one of the best in the 55hp range. Parts r cheap and easy to fix u couldn’t have made a better choice. As far as the tires they should last I a long time weather cracking is normal one of the best things u can do is keep it out of the the weather and out of the sun when not In use and keep it serviced it should last u many yrs
Have a 4100 and have had 3000, 5000, and 8N fords along with some really big IH tractors. They all bleed here and there, not to worry unless it's a fast drip running money out on the ground. Same with hydro lines. You are in for a not so pleasant surprise when you see how expensive they are. My tractors have loaders (many more lines) and can't remember the last time I replaced one before it had a blow out.

Looks great! If you maintain it, it will serve you well. Get a front end loader with a grapple on it to help load logs on the mill. Get a disc/tiller so next year's garden can be prepped easily. If you cut much firewood, take advantage of the tractor's power to process it quickly and perhaps profitably through selling firewood.
It's a very nice tractor! And them issues u pointed out are not major . The first thing is replace the hydraulic lines first . And I would of bought that if I had the chance . It's in very nice shape and it's been taken care of . I have a 1972 and a 1976 ford 4000s . Nice tractor man chow

There were three different styles of 4000s. Yours looks to be from 1965-1968. And if those are the original tires, I'd say they're in dang good shape.
If you're planning on putting fluid in them, I would definitely recommend new tubes because of the weather cracks.
To be a diesel engine of that age, it looks pretty dang clean and any small leaks are to be expected. I wouldn't fret over them.
I would however, replace the hydraulic steering line

Depends on the year. My 4000 had alternator on it from the dealer.
awesome tractor sir I have the exact same tractor and it will surprise you of what that thing can lift I use it all the time loading The Sawmill and moving stuff around you may have to beef up your log arm though we had one built because the other one collapsed the one that they built me I have not been able to bend it at all

I'd much rather have that old 4000 instead of any of the modern utility tractors.
Those old blue girls were pretty much Bullet proof

There is no problem with your hydraulics, the little lever right under the seat needs to be lifted up to engage the lift. As it is now it is in draft control mode. That is used when plowing for example
Nice tractor, I'd change the oil and filter, fuel filters, anti freeze. The hoses and tires, I'd change as the go. Good luck , she will have no problem pulling logs
That's actually the primary and secondary fuel filters that have overspray on them. The thousand series Ford tractors are near bulletproof

That drain down if it is the hydraulic pump can be a pain to fix. But as far as tractors I have been looking at buying a tractor like this because an old tractor is easier to work on and last longer IMO.
Ford followed Perkins 3 cyl larger piston s ,others had smaller pistons and more of them 6 cyl
