I was a 15yr old apprentice in the UK during mid 60's working for Ford when these came out. A good tractor in their time. Just for interest the part number for the oil filter is CFPN6731A, a number imprinted in my head.
I can understand the numbers you will never forget, I spent almost 20 years in the fire alarm business. there’s a whole catalog of part numbers I will never forget. 4098-9714 “simplex addressable smoke detector head”😊
We had one new in 1969 the pto operated wifhout the clutch you just flick the leaver in or out if it was on it stayed on even if you put the clutch in especially handy driving the square bailer.
Yep, I read that somewhere along the way ford made the 4000 with independent PTO, I was hoping this was one of them. It also makes for a safer machine when using a bush hog, if you don’t have an overrun clutch on the drive shaft it will push the tractor when you want to stop as well. If you happen to be along a pond, ditch or steep hillside that can make for a bad day.
No power steering on that tractor. It was an option from the factory, but that one doesn't have it. The first 4000 tractors were basically upgraded 801 series that Ford made in the late 50s to early 60s. The 4000 had 4 cylinders until 1965 when Ford redesigned the whole tractor line, and added 3 cylinder gas and diesel models. That 4000 probably didn't have live PTO. They came standard with transmission PTO like the 8Ns, but as an option the 4000 and 5000 tractors had independent PTO, while the 2000 and 3000 had optional Live PTO.
I honestly was surprised at the HP rating compared to its size. Since we got it running again the young man who’s operating it has made a lot of progress with cleaning up the farm it’s on.. it’s a great little machine.
@@Yellowdogsworld We had the 2 of the later 6Y models with the Fieco cab. One was traded for a 4600, the other now does light yard work around our dairy farm.. Heavy work is carried out by modern New Holland tractors.. A TS115 and a T6080..
it's been doing fine, went back out and flushed the cooling system and check the gal over good for the young man… he's been fixing his road and running the Bush hog with no issues so far.
Our 4000 of roughly the same configuration as this (hi-lo with 4 forward and 1 reverse) had fully independent pto. The hand lever was the only control. Foot clutch had only in or out and had no effect on the pto.
I grew up on a walnut farm and we used a 4000 for our shaker, and it was amazing how much abuse that thing could take. Best tractor every made IMHO.
I tend to agree, there's a reason these old fords are still around.

These 4000s were a big seller in Ireland and UK in their day. Powerful 3 cyl.. This 6X model is about 56 HP gross and the later 6Y has 62 HP.

You can tell what options it has by the model number
Safety switch on the high low range lever
Yep, found that one, glad it was actually working, would have been a bear to find if it had been faulty… and me not knowing about it. 🤦♂️
I have a diesel ford 6600 and I started noticing smoke coming from the tappet cover vent pipe, what does this indicate?
I have my grate grandfathers 1988 4610 diesel
How has it held up since you started it? I’m thinking about buying one…

Another good one bro!
You do make mistakes. I have witnessed them. 😂
Amen brother!
I love that tractor
I do not make mistakes only unavoidable errors 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Exactly!😁
I need one
Most all the 4000 had a two stage cluch in them hafe way down stops tractor all the way down stops every thing.
That’s good to know, next time I get a chance to run the 4000 I will have tot try that out.

Is it Diesel?
Yes it is, it would have give a lot more trouble had it been gas 😊
@@Yellowdogsworld it started quite easily after sitting that long
8 minutes in, and still fussing with the battery ???
well, it was more like 1 hour in... but with magic of editing it only took us 8 min 😁
