  • It’s important to seek proper treatment and follow exercises that will prevent further injury. Hopefully, following our recommendations will make your life less painful and a little brighter!
If you suffer from bunions, you might not have recognized the moment when they started to show on your feet. People often don’t pay enough attention to the first signs of a bunion, but it’s vital to catch it early on as it’s only in the initial stages of this condition that it can be prevented. Keep watching to learn tips to prevent bunions and to figure out what to do if you already have them.

    SUMMARY:
    - Your toes are meant to lie flat and feel comfortable inside a shoe without getting pressed against one another. They should have room to move!
    - Your diet is also important. If you are used to eating very fatty foods or opting for whatever happens to be in the fridge, this is a good time to start making smarter dietary choices.
    - When it comes to bunions, though, if you spend a lot of time not moving your feet, you risk the muscles becoming tight, the fascia in your feet getting “glued together,” and losing strength in your feet.
    - Massage will help you loosen up muscles in your feet and keep your toes facing the right way. When you put your foot into a tight shoe, you are encouraging your toes to be cramped.
    - A bunion pad will cushion the area where the bunion hurts and will make it easier to wear shoes.
    - A bunion sleeve covers a larger area of your foot than a bunion pad, and it might encase your whole foot arch.
    - Crush some ice, wrap it in a towel, and put it against your bunion to diminish the pain. It will also work as an anti-inflammatory.
    - If your bunions are already quite large, they might chafe against your shoe and cause your skin to wear away in that area. Regular foot soaks will help relieve tiredness, reduce sweat, and eradicate harmful bacteria.

As a podiatrist, I can’t agree with most of this advice! Once bunions developed and you are genetically prone it won’t really reverse but you can do things to help with the pain. Having a bunion doesn’t meant you need surgery however. That is only reserved for people with pain and that is the main thing being treated. Shoe wear makes a difference yes. Weight loss won’t really make a difference. I’m not sure how effective these exercises really are. Bunion pads are great! Again main indication for surgery is pain

Since you are a podiatrist, I want to let you know that a bunch of women I know who had surgeries said it didn't help, and actually theirs didn't go away either. You are in the field, you should come up with something for feet without surgeries, and make lots of money. Start with educating designers not to design weird toe shaped shoes for women.

I noticed a bunion on my right foot a few months ago. Incredible as it may seem, it was not because of wearing narrow shoes, but because I wore a boot a size bigger. As I live on a farm with very uneven terrain, I was forcing my support leg, mainly on the slopes, and that is how I hurt my right foot. I feel no pain and it is not swollen, but it is sad to see my foot slightly deformed. I'm using bunions pads and toe separators, and doing the exercises, I hope it gets better.

I am flat-footed and have since developed arthritis from some knee surgery that I had a few years ago. I have developed bunions on both feet which are painful and give me unexpected muscle cramps, mostly when driving. I use bunion pads but honestly, I have not experienced any relief.

Thank you for this informative video, I have developed a bunion on my right foot, and needed to know what caused it,as well as what to do for some relief. I don't think it runs in my family, but I wore high heels for years. (I am 4'9" tall, &it felt(feels)at times like being 'in the land of the giants'!) So, yes I wore them often. I have seldom wore heels in past 5 years, however, but during the past 3yrs, I've had quite a bump appear beside my big R toe. Boy it smarts at times, and the whole area where bump has formed, burns deeply, feeling like, what I would imagine, stepping on a hot coal! I was happy to learn that I may be able to do exercise, and perhaps even help mold or shift the bows there to improve. Yes, sensible footwear is imperative, thanks again for the tips!

I'm so happy I don't wear heels. I'm flat footed so I can't last in heels no longer than 1 minute lol. They're very uncomfortable and cause many problems to the feet.

I can't wear heels either, but because I have knee spurs, not flat feet. But remember, you can STILL get bunions from wearing pointy toed flats too.

    - Mine only started after I went from tight shoes to trainers, so what's with that?
    - The actual problem is the big toe going sideways and pushing the joint out, due to flat feet.

I have been wearing a silicone insert between my big toe and my little toe but today I dusted off an old pair of Earth shoes (negative heel technology) that I used to like wearing. I had not worn them in years, but they really felt great today. I have started to get a bunion on one foot. It is sore sometimes. I'm going to go ack to wearing this type of shoe for a while to see if it helps my bunion issue. Thanks for this video!

    To those watching this:
    1) none of the things suggested will “get rid of your bunion”. Proper shoe gear will help slow the progression of the deformity if it’s early and not at its end stage.
    2) All of these suggestion are pretty much BS. The only way for symptom control is padding, shoe gear modifications which they mention, but they are not easy to get into shoes really.
    3) the only way to structurally fix your bunion is through surgery. No massage or exercise routine or splinting is going to fix the bunion. This is only achieved surgically. Some people can get symptom relief and slow/stop progression of the bunion. Otherwise you are looking at surgery.

the reason for us to get bunions are simply we have a unstable pelvis go see a proper chiropractor and it will be gone , the excersize is always welcome in any part of the body
