For the people out there wondering about those ugly tips , yes they came off finally.
Not all GTO's had a Posi diff. In the future I will have it added on and have Nick rebuild and clean up and paint my engine.
No it's not an original matching #'s 400 or transmission. I had the matching # and wanted to get it rebuilt to install it in but unfortunately when I moved and in between trips someone stole the whole engine, heads , intake , carb , transmission and differential which was stored underneath my deck. F&@#$ .. Right now that's the best I can do. and have in the car. I enjoy it as it is and it's fun to drive.

That's the best thing you can do is drive and enjoy it and make memories. Then do projects one by one little by little car starts needing less. Old cars always need something. Great car.

My first car when I was living in the USA from 1975 to 1983 was a GTO almost exactly like this one Same colour, same wheels, same top, same sounds!. The hood top didn't work, so replacement hoses were salvaged from a wrecked Buick in a scrap yard, and a couple of other minor issues were sorted. One difference was mine had the vacuum operated headlight covers, which never worked at all. Just couldn't find where the leak was! I kept it for a couple of years and had probably too much fun. It cost me around $750:00 from memory. Thanks Nick for reviving some great memories.
That's a Beautiful old Goat! Just made me think back to High school and the memories, good times and a simpler world.
Had a 66 LeMans convertible 326..3 on the tree...sharp ride but I should have got the host.
Thank you, Nick and as an old school car guy myself and a Pontiac owner, this was a nice way to wake up with my morning coffee. Drive those classic muscle cars and enjoy them for what they were designed for. No trailer queens.
That's my friend Joe's GTO...GTO was the first Muscle car back in '64 ...John Delorean (Pontiac Exec at the time) and his crew decided to put a B-body 389 into an A-Body....GM Brass didn't allow it so Delorean got creative and made it an OPTION on the Tempest/Lemans, and it snuck past GM Brass..Rest is history! GO GTO GO! :-)

@@NicksGarage Yes he is...BTW, I also told him to lose the Cdn Tire tips...I installed some S/S ones from Pypes (similar to the ones Pontiac offered, but in S/S instead of simple chrome)...
I love the tan interior. Way cooler to drive around in the sun opposed to the black interiors most of them had!
nice to see a working GTO,, I was at a guys place lately who has a Ram air 4 ,4 speed convertible like that , that he put away 30 yrs ago.
Nick "Rocks". Look at that beautiful Road Runner, one of my dream cars. Than the orange Dodge pick up inside the shop. Freak me out. I had a 70' Dodge Pickup, 440 CUI, 727 Automatic with a floor shift Hurst kit in it. Loved the truck. My God Nick, thanks for the memories. You actually took me back in time to 77' when I was stationed at Holloman AFB, NM. Great times, great truck.

I truly miss Pontiac. I wish GM would bring them back. Really nice 69 GTO convertible and as always it’s in good hands with Nick and his crew!
My first car was a 1969 Pontiac Le Mans Custom S with a 350 2 barrel back in 1976. I was 19. Man I miss that car. :(
Remember "Here come da Judge" commercials For the GTO? I remember riding in an old GTO in my friends parents car in the 60s. It was a convertible too, we were going to a drive in diner, it was a fall evening and I was so cold, but it was fun. I owned a 69 Firebird, and my ex wife's parents owned a 67 tempest 326 powerglide with manual brakes that were scary, you had to stand on them to slow down.
I got a 66 GTO convertible I put turn down tips right at the back of the bumper I really like the look it gives
GTO JUDGE my dream car ( my science project ) ever since that movie i got wood watching ;) never went after one to buy . this car is fabulous the way it is im all about original and this brings tears to my eyes

I've seen old guys have long straight tips so they could blow flames out.
I grew up with Chrysler products in my family...but my first love was the red 1968 GTO from the movie My Science Project. I have always had a special place in my heart for Pontiacs because of that movie. I would love to own a 68 Tempest, GTO, Catalina, or Bonneville someday.

I love Dodge but my first taste of a muscle car was when I was a kid. I remember hanging around my dads home workshop when he had a old magazine it was a popular mechanics magazine and the front cover was a Pontiac GTO I fell in love with that car and most of my life I always wanted one. To this day that car is always in my mind and heart. That's is how I fell in love with muscle cars I must of been around 8 or 9 years old.

I'm with you on the Pontiacs Nick! My first car back in 1984 was a 4 door 1972 Catalina with the 400, I paid $400 for her, a dollar per cubic inch! lol! she was a good girl and I could pack all of my friends in it with room to spare, she was so BIG!!! I've always loved the GTOs too, although I'm a Mopar guy, you could say I'm a gear head through and through with love for all muscle I reckon. just as long as it's around as old as me in my 50s and has the heartbeat of a true beast with horsepower aplenty and I'm a very happy camper indeed!!!

My brother had a 71 GTO with the 300 horse 400. We put a mild cam in it and a HEI because it was a little sick when he bought it. Then we rebuilt the entire suspension. That car was a force to be reckoned with. I had a SHO Taurus try to shake me on a drive to Knoxville TN from Nashville TN. He finally gave up and gave me a smile while he was shaking his head. I miss that car.
@burningfeet 57 Until you make that drive between those two cities you have no need to make judgement calls. If you've never driven a SHO Taurus then you have no need to make a judgement on that particular Taurus. Educate yourself before making comments, your embarrassing yourself.

The beginning of another week Nick's Garage always makes Mondays a bit less bleak This 69 GTO has the muscle to get up and go Nick's done a minor restoration because deterioration was this cars situation now he's brought it back with Mopar seat belts so it's safe if you stack New shocks so it's fast off the blocks This Pontiac truly rocks Fully loaded with a power top I like it a lot Nick's taking us for a joy ride At Nick's Garage the fun doesn't ever stop

I had a 73 as well Maroon in color with the red interior with the 400 & TH400 trans with a 12 bolt rear with a limited slip was a great driver . My father had a 69 as well & I loved that car . It was light metallic blue with a dark blue interior & he had put Cragar mags on it with wide oval 70s all the way around . Wish I had both of those cars now lol .
@@peteloomis8456 Mine was tan with brown vinyl top and tan interior. It had been my aunt's car; she always drove Pontiacs.

GTO's are always a winner. I like the older ones, but the 400 CUI is one solid motor. Has plenty of power to hold it's own. I just to tune a friend of mine's who had a 66' Tempest with a 389 CUI with the Tri-Pak.
Funny to see a GTO that had an Olds steering wheel. The acronym for GTO that I heard long ago was: Grandma's Tired Oldsmobile.
Joke aside, that's a nice car. Can see right away on these how well they've been treated or restored by how well the front bumper fits the fenders. This one has nice clean lines.

Great car my frend had the same car the same color and year. His dad had a gas station with a garage i dont know what they dit to it but it would beat allmost any muscle car in a street race. I believe it also has the 400 cubic inch motor. Great memories of a great time in my life.
Nick I love your vidoes and seeing all the great cars again. I still have my 1968 ss 396 chevelle. Dam at 68 yrs old, I just can't afford the Chrysler muscle cars! Thanks for the memories!
I was on Woodward a e in summer of 1968 ( my dad was driving) This GTO was along side of us . I saw that emblem Bobcat package I never saw another one . It might have been a Lemans . It was green and sounded very healthy.
Smile as big as a lil kid dropping that top. Sounds like that motor makes alot of noise under the hood.

True I worked at a couple of shops years ago one that was sponsored by the MSRA & I used to be biased on some makes of cars & trucks but after working on so many different old cars classics muscle drag & custom cars & trucks I grew to appreciate how each make of vehicle was unique on how it was built drove rode & performed so now I like them all being you don't see them every day unlike the cookie cutter cars of today that all seem to look the same . That job I had was the best job I ever had because of all the different cars I got to not only work on but test drive plus the pay was good as well which didn't hurt lol.
Great looking GTO Nick. My Uncle had a white 1967 GTO convertible 400 4 speed he bought new at Royal Pontiac I believe that's what the dealership was called. But it was one of the Bobcat Bobcat GTO's, he sold it in the early 2000's. I wish he would have kept it.

My brother-in-law special ordered a LeMans Sport convertible, a 1970 model. It was baby blue with the rally wheels and wide ovals. It had a white power top and a white bucket interior, it was ordered with every option you could put on one with the high performance 350 with 4 bbl carb, factory headers, special cam and heads mated to a 4 speed Muncie., and had positrac rear end also. It was everything that GTO was and more. To me that LeMans Sport was more muscle car than the GTO. These special ordered LeMans were really fast and the only GTO to out run him was a GTO that was really souped up with a 6 pack and other drag strip mods. I wish I could have bought the car when he went to get rid of it even though I know how badly he beat the hell out of it when he had it. It only had a little over 70K on it but he always said you want to break them in the way you are going to drive them. And believe me, from the time he picked up the car and let it go he drove the hell out of it. That GTO in this video is something really special also, there were not that many flop tops made and they quit making them in 71 or 72. Just to have a car of this model is rare in anybody's book and it looks like the people who owned it took good care of it. With the repairs that Nick made I bet it runs and drives much better now. Good luck with your Goat in the future, they are made to drive and enjoy while you are living and I think the guy who owns it has the right ideas about his car. I love it.
Pontiac GTO, the first muscle car, and always one sweet ride. Today's episode of Nicks Garage brings back a lot of great memories and a couple of not so good ones. I owned a 68 Firebird with a 350ci and a Powerglide. That's one I sure do wish I had kept. The years 2009 and 2010 proved just how bad the government can screw things up. I don't know how bad the "Cash for Clunkers" program affected Canada but, it set the entire US automotive industry back years. One year later, the entire Pontiac brand was shut down, adding insult to injury. I would have loved to see Pontiac join in on the modern day muscle car wars with either a Firebird or GTO. Maybe even both? LOL!
In California,around 1983-84 union 76 gas was crushing more than 50 cars a month because their oil refineries were putting out to much air pollution,these had to be running cars, they would buy them from used car lots, and from the want ads, there was one month they crushed 27 1967-69 Camaros, not alot of people know about this, hot rod magazine were doing stories at the time on this,,thanks! Agreed 100%! This is what these cars are all about. I love "drivers!" Where else, than Nick's Garage, are you going to find someone willing to work on a muscle car and someone willing to celebrate a muscle car that you do not have the money to restore? The world needs more mechanics like Nick!

Had a '72 GP. What a torque monster! 455 4bbl low compression. Still went through rear tires. It would fry them! Would get a trans ams ass in a race! That was around 1980. I was 16 at the time. Great starter car. Surprised I didn't get killed. Those were the days. That stuff was dirt cheap.
I see the guy with the Duster brought his dog dish hub caps and had them installed on the car. If you don't have the Rally wheels or the Magnum 500's, I like the simple look of the dog dish hub caps. Good to see the stumble has been fixed and you didn't have to rebuild the carb. I know you could rebuild that carb in your sleep if you had to though.
I bought my 70 GTO convertible for 800 dollars back when it was just a used car. I wish I still had it
I passed on one back in '86. Lots of paint damage due to the owner's angry exgirlfriend. Other than that it was in great condition, but I didn't have any place to park it while I waited to get it repainted.
Like you said, they were once just old cars. I figured I could always pick one up later.
I paid $250 for my 70 GTO back in 1978, red red interior and a 3 speed standard with a console, Judge stripes, but boy was it rusty, tire smoke used to pour out of the rear speaker holes, no posi either

Thanks Nick for another great video. Love the Pontiacs and the "split grill" front ends. That GTO is a gorgeous car!! My favorite Pontiac is the 69 GRAND Prix!!!
GTO offered a chrome splitter that exited behind the rear wheel, horizontaly, similar to the late 70s Trans Am, but unlike the TA that pointed straight down at a bit of an angle back, the GTO tip exited horizontally. It's rarely rarely seen, I removed a set from a '71 GT37 in a junkyard in 1978, and I still have them. And if you look in a Pontiac GTO restoration catalog, your customer gets chrome exhaust tips that are rarely seen. A factory look, and not that Canadian Tire garbage with those stupid screws, which are one of my biggest pet peeves, and so often seen on everything from Corvairs to pickup trucks

she's a torque monster just like the Oldsmobile 455..there's a reason that they use that in those GMC motorhomes back in the day because of the torque.

Pop had a '66 Grand Prix. Something about the Tempest body on a different chassis. Beautiful car! 389 4bbl. Burgundy paint. Too bad he traded it before I (at 15) got to drive it.
A wood grain steering wheel would look great in that GTO.

426. We did remove the ex tips.
As a former owner of a 69 GTO (hence my user name), the owner of this car made the common mistake of installing the exhaust tips upside down. The exhaust tips should point straight back, not down.

It was nice to see your newly acquired rookie mechanic doing valve lapping in the opening scenes. I remember my Dad having me do that by hand many years back. A friend of mine bought a new Pontiac Judge back in ‘69 with the Ram Air IV pkg. It was factory rated at 370 h.p. It was a 4 speed car with posi rear end. I noticed the rag top is single drive, not good. My friend took his car to Royal Pontiac in Michigan and they did head work, added headers and I think a tune up and his car ran bottom 12 sec quarters. It was of course orange in colour. I also agree with your chrome exhaust tip removal, it’s not a good look to me but I’m getting up there in years. Nice car though.
With how sharp that GTO looks I would not have known that there would have been rust there

Great sounding mufflers on the GTO. I haven't heard a good sounding Rumble Bumble on other peoples cars for about 25 years except for me and my friends cars. We use glass packs, not the obnoxious cackling ones though. They sound a lot like the Charger in "Bullitt", kind of like the sound of a cigar bought idleing in the water. It's a rumble insted of going kaw kaw kaw like an echo in an empty tin can or garbage can sound.

PONTIAC 's slogan , " We build excitement " G.M. should never have got a bail out unless they brought back the Pontiac division .
Pontiac made some of the nicest muscle cars if the sixties and seventies and really eighties but eighties was the era of smog and pollution cut down and that in fact killed the muscle car era and it started in late 73 and by 74 the muscle was gone but on the good side chevy and ford are producing faster cars now then they've ever made before it's just too bad they're all ugly as hell lol

Not only did get it to steer better you saved his tires.
I had a 78 Buick Skyhawk with a 231 V6 . It idled rough from the day I bought it new. The dealer worked on it with no improvement. I finally found the floats were off by an eighth of an inch in
the carburetor.
GTO. My dad used to say that stands for Gas, Tires and Oil. Most of the people he knew that had one back then were usually putting their foot into it, burning up the gas and tires. And I guess they were running them too hard, making them use oil. Those Pontiac 400's were really good engines. My friend inherited a '72 Grandville from his mom. He kind of abused that thing and after he got married, he gave it to my brother's roommate. That was about 1993 and that thing was getting pretty tired by then. But you could pull up to a light and give her half throttle taking off and that engine could still spin the tires pulling that huge boat of a car. Wish I'd bought it from him.

Positraction and Sure-Grip wasn't always standard on muscle cars. My previous car was a '69 Charger R/T 440. It was absolutely loaded with options but came with a 3:23 open rear end. The interior on this Goat is nice!

My thoughts were the tail pipe extensions have to go otherwise a good car at this time, enjoyed the ride thanks for sharing as Gorge did a top job with the video. Looks like you got some beaut rides in the shop as usual Nick. Stay well & safe at this time.
If that is a Q-Jet 4bbl then check the primary shaft for looseness as that causes a lot of gremlins that will drive you nuts trying to figure it out. It is fixable though.

If only that Pontiac gto had a 455. I have a 73 Pontiac Safari wagon with a 455 Pontiac. I also have a 72 oldsmobile 98 with a 455 oldsmobile and a 74 Caddilac coupe DeVille with a 472.

Still the 400 is a strong engine I believe the 400 for that year was rated at either 365 or 375 HP stock with gobs of torque . I worked at a speed shop in MN years ago & we built a 69 GTO drag car with the 455 HO done up with a chryoed forged crank custom roller cam Kaufman heads 2x4 custom sheet aluminum intake with a 3 stage nitrous system on it & headers we built in the shop that dynoed at the rear tires over 1,100 HP on our chassis dyno & was at one time a national record setter all Pontiac powered that ran low 8 second 1/4 mile times at over 165 mph . It was named bottle fed goat lol .
When those Goats are new that rubber nose will flex back if it gets dented.

Happy Birthday Nick 🎂 is that rear passenger tire out of round - could be the video but l thought l saw a slight wobble when it was coming to a stop...l noticed the taillight too but you beat me to it...Man the exterior paint/interior combo (trim code) is popping for this Pontiac...as long as l'm pointing things out, on another video (Duster maybe) l noticed the rear after market leaf spring shackle extensions had some side to side slack? Maybe if he welded the bolt head to the shackle it will tighten up...George does Great Video Shots 👍 otherwise l'd never seen that...l wish there was a video (detailed) of you with those Hemi heads you were working on the work bench but l know some "secrets" stay in the shop...again, Happy Birthday Nick 🎂 take care & stay safe...Great Video
Ya his rear end is also blown it only spun one tire. Atleast I thought the rear end came locked with those...?
My favorite GTO is the 68 just like Jake Doyle's.
