    I been drag racing PONTIACS since the mid 70s , they are stronger than people give them credit for , currently running a 1972 455 H.O. with the factory 7f6 heads , it's all old school trw L2394 pistons , with a roller cam , 3600 stall converter , it's not on this level but still a monster. What number heads are they ? Love me some PONTIACS 👍👍👍🏁 BEAUTIFUL CAR !

    Studs pull out of aluminum heads.
    Sometimes you need the cast-iron heads for weight transfer.
    Aluminum is good for beer cans.
    Iron American Dream on TH-cam.

    ** -0- downvotes, and my faith in humanity gets a positive bump!**
    This engine sounds absolutely fantastic. Why, oh why did GM have to drop this division? As much as I like Buick, I would've preferred for that division to fall, if given a choice. Think about it, when Pontiac was dropped, the recession was on, which meant fewer people buying cars(or spending money at all!). So, wouldn't it have made more sense to drop one of your TWO higher dollar, luxury car marques?
    In lean times, customers who do buy new cars, are probably more likely to buy a more affordable car, not a loaded luxury model. Besides, they already had Cadillac cars to choose from, if luxury was a prerequisite.
    Not only that, but aside from the (wonderful)Gran Sports and (slightly less wonderful)Gran Nationals, Buick just doesn't have the storied history of Pontiac.

    • @silverbacksilverback1372
      @silverbacksilverback1372 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The death of Pontiac was an inside job. The corporate hit was a result of Chevy, Buick and Cadillac scheming to regain sales that Pontiac had been "siphoning off" from these other divisions. Because they were boring cookie cutter cars. With Pontiac cashiered, these other divisions would now be free to throw heaps of cash on the altar of Corvette,Camaro and Caddies with any sporting pretense. Just nevermind that Pontiac was the ONLY division that delivered a decent exciting and affordable car selection, even though they were shackled by GM's corporate part sharing dogma, resulting in only middling quality and fitment issues.

    • @ericfredrickson5517
      @ericfredrickson5517 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The primary reason Pontiac went, and Buick stayed, is because of China; The Chinese just LOVE their Buicks. GM wanted to be rid of Buicks after Pontiacs death, so they would have just Chevy, GMC and Cadillac, but the Chinese don't want Cadillacs - they want Buicks. And they are just too big of a market to ignore.
      Same thing happened to Oldsmobile; they wanted to be rid of them, so they sabotaged the brand by a radical styling change, redesigning their badge, and eliminating the Oldsmobile name on the car so no one knows who makes it, thus making it unrecognizable.

    • @lcee6592

      Patrick McLeod look at the money gm spent on advertising to re- brand Buick as a “young generation” car. Total duh gm, Pontiac was (even in the mundane lethargic years) already the young generation car. Gm would have saved themselves a lot of coin in advertising with Pontiac brand!

    • @jedidethfreak
      @jedidethfreak 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not just the blocks, but the whole bottom end - I read somewhere that in the early '60's, Pontiac engineers looked for a particular iron alloy to run in the crank and rods, as like a "sweet spot" mix of lightness and durability (lighter and more durable than normal cast iron crank and rods, but cheaper (but not as light or durable) as high-end forged stuff). Pontiac engineers, especially in the '60's, REALLY wanted the engine to be as good as they could right from the factory.

But ive had 400s spinning 7500rpm run after run and not come apart. 455s spinning 7000rpm on the regular. I used big solid roller cams and Doug Nash warrior singleplanes.

    i have a 327 all cast iron engine it puts out 1200 hp on pump gas with no nitro the best part it has been in over 15 races plus i drove the shit out of it on the street it still runs strong but it sits in my shop because the guy that built it died old man bell . this motor loves high rpms it has been over 15,000 rpms , bell built the block like a indy engine with a dragster top end ported everything including water and oil ports season the block and polished the inside of block so oil would drop faster for the high rpms . old man bell said it would do 11,000 rpms all day long and yes it would went 30 miles with it at 11,000 rpms no problem but it did cost a lot of money . we pulled it out of rick news dragster then put another 25,000 in to it like the heads had over 3500 in them . started with 202 angle plug heads ported to 204 ported the intake and exhaust ports water and oil ports matched the ported block.the best part it has out lasted most of the racing engines that i know of even bell said cast on cast is the best way to go if u can get were u need it way less chance for the engine to leak at the head caskets lot of engines start leaking just a little with out any one knowing it and that is when u en up with major engine problems and not even know it . there is no way any aluminum engine could have handle the over heating my 327 went through on the street

    Beit aluminum or iron, what keeps an engine together is the internals. What kills an engine is primarily rpm and imbalance.

    Retired mechanic here. Let me count a few ways that a Pontiac V8 is built better than a Chevy V8.
    1.) If you want a Chevrolet with the same high nickel content as a factory Pontiac you have to order it from the Bowtie catalog because stock Chevy blocks are cast from a much cheaper grade of iron.
    2.) Chevy main caps don't have locating pins (like Pontiacs do) so they have to be adjusted during assembly.
    3.) Chevy cheaped out and didn't bother to put a thrust plate on the cam like almost every other manufacturer does.
    4.) Chevy timing covers often fail from timing chain slap. Good thing they're cheap because I have replaced quite a few with windows in them.

    • @timsharpe3498
      @timsharpe3498 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And last but not least, You can remove the timing cover from a Pontiac without dropping or even loosening the oil pan.

      @Rob Durst
      My Pontiac mopped up Chevys like a rag all day long. It only takes 400 cubes of Pontiac power to clobber most BBCs. I couldn’t pay the Chevy boys to race my NA Pontiac without using their nitrous. Bunch of bottle babies.

    • @timsharpe3498
      @timsharpe3498 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Rob Durst
      I must have hurt your Chevy fanboy feelings. At the end of the day it’s just a car. And if you have a fast Chevy there’s a good chance that there aren’t many true Chevy parts left on it so I probably insulted a pile a racing parts that fit a Chevrolet. To settle this properly the comparison would be between a real 400 Pontiac and a real BBC.

    • @timsharpe3498
      @timsharpe3498 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Rob Durst
      I understand your problem. Your BBC was so slow that you had to replace every Chevy part with race parts. And now that it’s not really a Chevy any longer it’s a lot faster. What did you prove? You spent too much money?
      I’m being serious. If you want to prove that a BBC is better than a similar sized Pontiac with similar mods that would be interesting. Comparing who spent the most on aftermarket heads, blocks and everything in between is totally pointless. At that point we might as well just compare bank accounts and credit lines.

    • @timsharpe3498
      @timsharpe3498 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’m gonna toss out an example just for kicks. The Pontiac Dude on Street Outlaws has an aftermarket engine in his GTO so I admit that that up front. Even though the heads and block are not factory Pontiac parts they are stock dimensions and the heads are an optimized version of Ram Air 4 factory castings. The engine kit was purchased from Butler Racing for about $16,000. Meanwhile, some of his BBC competitors admit to having engines that cost about $80,000 that have heads that are completely revamped for all out racing. Other competitors have custom race only engines.
      Big Chief’s license plate reads: 481XLOL
      I agree.
