That’s the first time I’ve ever heard George Harrison mention Duane Allman in an interview! Wasn’t expecting that.
If you get the raw tapes of the Let It Be sessions, on the very couple of days, George is raving about the guitar work on the Wilson Picket version of "Hey Jude"....which is played by Duane. George spends the next day or so fiddling around with Duane's "dweedley-dweedley" lick, he does it between takes when he's noodling around. You'd have to listen to about six hours of rehearsals to find those moments, but they're there. And you can hear George talking to John about it on the first day, possibly even the first hour. It's something he came into the sessions very enthusiastic about. (Similarly, Glyn Johns is raving about a session he had just done.....the first Zeppelin album, lol. )
Wow man, I've been a rabid collector of interviews and press conferences of The Beatles as a group and as solo artists for 45 years, and I have never heard this before! Not only that, but I have never heard George like this before! Thanks so much for posting this. I'd have been pissed if I'd have died without hearing this one.

So 40-million in 1974 dollars would be worth more than 225-million today. It's too bad so much of that went to the tax man, the courts, the lawyers etc. all because of the Beatles involvement with that bloodsucking Klein. Mick Jagger tried to warn John off the guy but he wasn't having any of it. Paul saw through the guy but trying to bring his in-laws in to manage the bands affairs was a really stupid move on his part.
Anyway, that was a cool interview. My brother saw George on that tour and to be honest he said it was a pretty weak show. That was George's only U.S. tour though so I'm sorry I missed it all the same. RIP George, the taxman can't touch you now, provided you declared the pennies on your eyes that is.
George was into coke at this period of his life and it wrecked his voice. He was in Houston at the time of this interview but he mentioned going to Baton Rouge ( LSU assembly center). I wish George would have been in better shape, I would have enjoyed seeing him!
The tour schedule was demanding and performance long and his voice suffered due to the demand upon it.
The thing is, Paul selling George, John, and Ringo as head over heels in stupor with Allen Klein is just mythology.
This is like McCartney telling you the idea for Sgt. Pepper came from Mal Evans not being able to identify what sachets are. This is a man who drive them up and down the motorway. Took them to airports. Booked them into hotels. This is a man who does not know what salt & pepper sachets are on a plane?
Allen Klein's history with The Beatles starts in 1964. Brian Epstein turns down an offer from him on part of The Beatles pie.
He announces in June 1966 he wants them as clients.
In November 1966, it makes British newspapers that he has two of them.
(it is believed that it's Harrison and Lennon he has obtained)
Brian Epstein, George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr all deny these claims of Klein's. They said he was talking bullshit. They're not even dealing with the man yet, and they already see he's bullshit.
And he says this at a time when their contract with Epstein had not been renegotiated yet, and it was overdue.
The only Beatle that did not like Epstein's management was McCartney.
The only Beatle in London between September through November 1966 to be negotiated with is McCartney. Everyone else is in Spain or India. The press follow these Beatles to the corners of the Earth to find out if they're leaving Epstein, or if they're breaking up. McCartney? Goes completely off grid. I didn't think Beatles could do that in 1966. For two months no less.
The only Beatle that could not be reached for comment about Klein's claims is McCartney. He's now out of town, still off grid, when the other 3 are back.
One author has suggested it's McCartney bringing Klein in in the first place. I have a hard time disagreeing with that theory.
This interview was done after George Harrison’s performance on the Dark Horse Tour at Hofheinz Pavilion.
UK Tax pirates. In 1966 the UK top tax rate was 98%! Why bother to work when the government was taking 98% ? I would have written Taxman and moved.
Bet they all voted Labour- the party that raised the taxes.
I saw him at Madison Square Garden on that tour, it was great seeing him but his voice was shot.

I think George is the best person in the Beatles because he's got the real love, you know, it's hard to find, just listen to the music and it's all there a very good group of people who gave us their best of themselves

It's fine espousing the idea that if all the rich folk gave a little we'd all be fed/clothed etc. but real life doesn't work that way, George would know full well giving away anything only diminishes his own position/empire which he'd be the first to defend, it's only his insane wealth that allowed him to talk so nonchalantly, money wasn't so silly when he was in court fighting for his share of it, beware of spiritual gurus who drive expensive sportscars

Beware of trolls who are so jealous of people who are more successful than they are, that they feel the need to cast a negative light on the more successful person.
They got rinsed ! Just think how much money these lads made , they were Britains biggest export in monetary terms at one time , hence the Mbe or Obe , Epstien rinsed them as well in the early days and the taxman 😮 we all know about that 😉.

This guy was ill equipped to handle George's intellect, spirituality, and candor. Still stuck in 3D and the Waterial Morld. And George seemed hypo-manic in parts. Not a "weird" interview, but definitely not operating on an equally balanced teeter- tauter.

Love the band, but hearing him whinge about money and their tax affairs just makes me angry. How many houses and cars did he have? How much money is enough? We have tax brackets, nobody ever payed 95% of their earnings even then. These days the tax burden on the super rich is historically low in the UK. I think it's immoral but for some people no amount of wealth is ever enough.
The highest rate of income tax peaked in the Second World War at 99.25%. It was then slightly reduced and was around 90% through the 1950s and 60s. In 1971 the top rate was 'cut' to 75% and with the investment income surcharge this raised the top rate on investment income to 98% the highest permanent rate since the war. (Wikipedia)

Epstein might have been inept but was not a crook like a lot of other managers. Epstein ran a record shop before managing the Beatles.Tom Parker took 50% of Elvis's earnings. As for the tax, I remember these days and the top rate was outrageous.
How much is enough? For politicians and government tax collectors, it’s never enough. That goes for the US and UK. More and more of someone else’s earnings is the source of their power, control, and political influence.
