    From the look of the smoke, I think you had two different types of parts fail. The massive jet was from a big electrolytic capacitor, definitely. Characteristic delay followed by venting. My guess is they used Taiwanese ones from the capacitor plague era. It's hard to tell what other damage might have been done inside the supply, but it's possible that a recap would fix it - not that that's economical for a commodity ATX supply like that. The LED on the motherboard makes me think that this is probably the case. ATX switch-mode power supplies from that era directly generated each individual power rail (12V, 5V, 3.3V, etc.) from a separate secondary winding tap on the transformer, so if the cap on the 12V rail failed open it would continue to produce the other rails (albeit often with poor voltage regulation) despite the 12V rail being gone. A fail short usually trips the power supply's internal overcurrent detection (you may have heard a "tick, tick, tick" sound if you've ever tripped this) and all output rails go down in that case. That said, many ATX supplies generate the +5VSB (standby) rail completely separately from the main switching supply circuitry, so the LED could just be running off of that and the whole supply could still be FUBAR.
    Based on the initial smaller pop, I think you also had a paper type Y-class filter cap go too. The X-class and Y-class mains filter caps are notorious for dying in a puff of acrid smoke, since they're glass encapsulated and tend to crack and let in air in storage due to heat cycling and mechanical shocks. From that era I'd guess it's probably one that RIFA (now Kemet) made. Luckily those Y-class ones fail open and aren't actually necessary parts for operation - they're included for EMI compliance reasons. I had one go in my very old Fluke-Phillips PM3070 CRT oscilloscope, which I got from my dad (he's an electronics engineer that designs power control circuitry for diesel-electric trains) after he upgraded and it languished in the garage for many years. Stunk the room out for weeks. The oscilloscope still worked afterwards, though, and it was an easy replacement. Luckily it pre-dates the capacitor plague.
    As a fun side story here, as a kid I had a desktop ATX power supply go bang in quite a spectacular way. The main output capacitor in it exploded with such force that it sprayed its molten innards through the fan vent and all over my wallpaper. When my dad removed the power supply it was no longer a box shape - it was almost spherical. He said he'd never seen a capacitor, or any other component for that matter, explode with such force. And that's coming from someone who works with 30 megawatt motors for a living. The PC case was so badly bent at the back that it ended up being unsalvageable, even after an hour's work with pliers and a hammer to try to bend it back into shape. Luckily all the other PC parts were fine, save for a tiny crack in the corner of the motherboard that luckily didn't break anything. I had a big discoloured mark on my wallpaper for years after that incident.

    • @gsuberland
      @gsuberland 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, was the fan on the side of the case smoking? I thought I saw smoke coming from there toward the end of the shot. If the fan was old and shorted out it could explain this failure - plague caps in these supplies are easily set off by shorts because it causes the voltage on the secondary side of the SMPS transformer to go much higher than normal, and over-voltage is the primary cause of capacitor failure.

    I believe there were cpus you could overclock by removing and bridging a combination of pins. I was pondering if that could be the reason they were bent and there was goop between two pins (like conductive ink).

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe,, but it did not look like something done on purpose.

    • @eDoc2020
      @eDoc2020 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt that's the case here. While the Mendocino Celerons can be overclocked by blocking a pin, that only gives you an exact 50% overclock (66->100 MHz bus) because the multiplier is locked. IIRC 600MHz is about the absolute fastest these chips can go. This 533MHz is already the top speed chip of this type. Overclocking would take it to 800MHz, where it surely wouldn't boot.
      Side story, I tried overclocking my Pentium 4 by bending a pin out of the way. First I bent the wrong pin, then it broke off. Bye-bye CPU.

    Hey Morton, this Socket 370 cpus can be modified by pin mods. This old whitney board supports 100mhz fsb and the 66mhz fsb celeron was often overclocled to 100mhz front side bus. Sometimes you had to do the pinmod to increase the vcore of rhe cpu to run stable at 100mhz fsb. I spent many nights pushing those stuff to new highscores 😬

      Actually the Celleron was a cache stripped version of the flagship pentiums of the day, however I do recall a hack of the day where you disabled some pins to enable some of the pentium features, like the ability to put dual cellerons in a dual socket board with a bodge cable run between the two CPU sub modules (those where the cartridge cpus with the cache on the cart.) I just looked online and could find no mention of it however. MAYBE those pins where bent for a reason and the one in the middle couldn't be bent due to space so they insulated it with something and when you 'fixed' it you didn't? Just a thought.
