    I am an IT Consultant, also a programmer since 1969 FORTRAN, COBOL originally when I was a senior in high school.... I'm really OLD....
    Anyway I worked for a while at a server farm, and i learned that most servers run 80GB HD
    because that is the optimal speed for them, actually this server you had in your hand is probably a set of 10 servers, also speed is 15000 rpm, they are expensive, and they used a fiber optic connector for the network. I know that the RAM is also special, 128gb for the new servers is about 15,000 USD
    The data is stored in storage and backup servers that usually have more than 400 80gb each one is about $200 each HD, and they in turn connected to a robotic virtual backup server.
    All data centers are different, they may have higher capacity drives, depending on what they actually do.
    My knowledge is from ONE data center I worked at for a little while, most of my life I worked for myself.
    Loved the 775 to 771 CPU exchange

    Hey Morton! I was just watching a documentary of the state of electronics as a hobby in Australia, and it played your music. This reminded me that there are a few videos of yours that I haven't watched yet. :-)
    I'm not sure if you have any interest in the nostalgia of old electronics shops (mostly closed now due to the availability of cheap components direct from China), but if you are then you might like to look at the channel State of Electronics.
    Don't worry, those videos of yours I haven't watched yet are on my list and I will watch and like them. I am already a subscriber. ;-)

    Hey there, absolutely love your channel. Its really cool to see how big of a system you can setup in a household. I actually have a bit of a question for you, if you have some time. I work as a computational chemist here in the United States, and we use a software called GROMACS to run protein simulations. Recently, I managed to acquire 15 NVIDIA GTX 760 graphics cards for cheap, and I figured this would be the perfect time to build a computation farm like how I've been wanting to for a few years now. Unfortunately, I'm very new to server hardware. I know that its rare to find older hardware that has PCI-E x16 board edge connectors, so I'm really excited to see how your experiment goes with the x16-to-x8 adapter. Do you have any preliminary results that you'd be willing to share?
    My main question is, would you happen to know of any older servers that you feel would be well suited for housing double-width graphics cards? I've been looking on eBay for some cheap deals. I found a nice lot of HP ProLiant DL380 G7 and G6, do you think they would be good for GPU housing? I also found some x3650 M2 and M3s, not sure if those would be better. My main issue is the PCIe x16 thing, but if the adapter works well, then simply finding servers that can fit the cards becomes the problem (I already plan on having external power supplies for the cards, since I doubt I'll be able to find servers that can power 2-3 cards at a time.)
    Also, for a beginner storage solution, what would you recommend? (I probably only need 5-10 TB of storage max, but I'd definitely like it setup in RAID so I don't loose any valuable simulation data). Thank you for your time, and thank you for all your awesome videos! I hope that you keep finding awesome deals on equipment!

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jon
      Thanx for movin you question in here.
      Putting a GPU in a server is a rather new thing,,, so there is not a lot of old server equipment available for it. To put in those NVIDIA GTX 760 graphics cards,, you need a lot of space and power in the server ,,both the 6 pin and the 8 pin power connector.
      That removes the x3650 M2 and M3 from your list :-/
      I think you get to this cheapest by setting up the 15 cards out side the servers,,,somthing like this : th-cam.com/video/TtBw_p_NU00/w-d-xo.html
      For you storages,,, this is a cheat solution : th-cam.com/video/nlT85Xf1AsQ/w-d-xo.html and install it with VM-ware ESXi 6.0 and make a virtual storages server with XPenology like i do here: th-cam.com/video/_QRCOTUSy5o/w-d-xo.html
      And it can run a lot more VM's for you :-)

    Morten, it would be great to see a video on how you mount the rack rails, especially the IBM ones. The HP rails work fine for me, but the IBM rails seem too short to mount them. Also, how do you lift up heavy servers like the x3850 into the rails all by yourself? I nearly broke my back putting up my DL580s... .
    Keep up the good work, Morten!

    There is a reason why they are getting cheap :) They are to expensive to have running. With a maximum watt draw of 2.8kWatt/hour under full hardware load they chew their way though the electric bill fast! Also for you yanks, when running with 120V mode the two power supplies are not redundant (as such), they are both powering the server at the same time (look it up in the install guide) so trying to change one under load would cripple the system unless you obey the limitations like only 2 cpu's and so on. So be warned, got cheap electricity - Then this might be for you ;)

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi David Bjørnsten-Lindhard
      It uses a bit of power,, around 5-600Watt
      Thank you for watching! :-)

    • @davidbl1981
      @davidbl1981 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah 500Watt in idle to ... If you run all cores at 50% you are already way above 1kWatt.

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      David Bjørnsten-Lindhard
      No No No first two PSU at 1440W and they are redundant. Means that 1440W is absolute Max! and even that You will probably not be able to reach. 5-600W runinning.

    • @davidbl1981
      @davidbl1981 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      IBM says so them selves. And also at 110V they are NOT redundant very important for all them Yanks. Check IBM Redpaper (IBM System x3950 M2 and x3850 M2 Technical Introduction) where they tell this. Also in the IBM System x3850 M2 / x3950 M2 Product guide, they state that the CPUs can draw 130W each. So that's already 520Watt, then 4 x SAS HDD+Raid controller, Coolers and so on. Not a cheap system to run.

    • @frankwong9486
      @frankwong9486 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the processor max out 130W doesn't mean that you computer always be like that
      except you got heavy loading 24x7 fullload
      then you will got near 520 watt on processor consumption

    Have a DELL PowerEdge T430 and it actually has 2 designated x16 PCI-e slots and there is also 2 PCI-e power connector for any graphic cards that use that, which is all modern. I was surprised to say the least. I'm in full mode to install a graphic card in it for fun and test to see if it work to play om. Most likely won't be able to utilize anymore than 1 cpu or the two but would be fun to test anyway. And it is also so free in the chassi where the cards would go that a graphic card could be almost long as the entire computer, you don't see that in a home pc.

    You can short the pcie connector from the graphics card. ( for instance, an AMD RX 460 doesn't even has no more then 8 pcie channels in use
    A pcie slot supports normally 75W. Lot of more powerfull graphics cards, do yo use a PCIe power cable, being a 6 or 8 pin.

      okay. ty. questions now. what does it take to make these types of servers into an MMO gaming station. cluster, CPU's and what not. I am learning about this the hard way. I am a gamer (light) but have noticed a big exploit in cash. For the likes of GTarcade which you can visit at any time. One game in particular is LOA. not 2 or 3 just LOA. this game was relicenced as chaos angels. Now there are two versions of the same game but different titles. If you check them out you will see what i mean. I hope you can see where I am goiing with this. Other companies are buying rights and sharing the same game. They make the money and extend later on. What I have noticed on your system is now you have the option to do just this. Make money and a bunch of it. All are under the game status of Rubies Gems or Diamonds. in this instance it is diamonds. Each batch is equal to the cost of $5 for 500 diamonds. Multiple this with 20 users. that is your cloud costs along with server in one month. these games are running atleast 100 people. most all buy some basic packages. you can work out the costs now to YOUR advantage. can you please make a video with this tought as your focus point. you have the setup and servers. whtat will it take to get it running and can you doit.? following with most interest.

    This is not cheap because the whole machine is on par with an i5 6600 but it consumes a load more power. If you are at the point where you need a dedicated server, you will need something more powerful. As it stands, those $200 are better spent on AWS or Azure. For about 2 times this price, you can get a decent piece of kit with two 6 core E56xx series hyperthreaded CPUs that will consume two times less power and have around twice the compute power.

      Also, besides running game servers, I would have to run at least two web servers and a MySQL server for game statistics.

      it wont handle one actually you could just modify the slot but that doesnt matter. slots on these dont out put enough power even if you added a second psu with 8 pin power it wouldnt work. level1techs has a curing consolitis video where they try sticking gpus into old work machines and the slot power limitation prevents even basic cards from working.

    Are there disadvantages of memory blocks being installed in memory cartridges? Sure it's easier to maintain, but the last block seems to be really far away from the processor, where the memory controller is. Also there's the connector which sure adds noise to the signal.Or that's why ECC memory started in servers?

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi +Murphistic
      Both are right,, and you also have the cartridges that can brake,, so it is not all good. But that said, I have only had bad MEM blocks in servers like this,,, and should a cartridge brake,, it is a lot easier to change then a system board. But Yes more complexity,, more links in the chain to be bad.

    A lot of power, literally. I'm sure the reason it goes so low is that they're power beasts. Running 24/7 will cost a shit tonne especially with the crappy rates for electricity we have in London for residential premises.
    And in a datacenter, it's just too old and the power to performance ratio is too low for modern applications.

    You can use up to 2TB SATA SSDs in this machine. Unfortunately it supports only SATA 300 and Raid Levels 0, 1 and 10. Even with the fastest SSDs, you only get like 300MB/s performance. But anyway it's my favorite machine.

      I was wrong about the disk speeds. I originally tested it with just a single SSD and never got more than 300MB/s. Now i installed two new 2TB SAS drives in Raid 1 and got more than 500MB/s. So this old server is actually still pretty usable.

    Nice piece of hardware you've got there! What I don't get about your videos though is your sometimes utter lack of knowledge of what you're actually dealing with, and just reading things off labels as you spot them, and this hasn't really changed over the years (yes, I've stumbled over a couple of your videos recently).
    Examples from this video include "they [PSU] have a lot of watts" after failing to find an exact number on the label (they're rated for 1440W according to "IBM United States Hardware Announcement 107-606" by the way), or "it seems there are no LEDs after all" after inspecting the RAM board -- the retaining/ejecting clips _are_ what the LEDs would light up in case of an error when you pushed that button. Oh, and two of your PCIE slots _do_ support hot-plug; something you at first said they didn't, but later on you notice the orange release buttons.

    Hello Morten. I just recently purchased 3 old IBM x3850 servers (2x M1 and 1x M2). I got them VERY cheaply at an auction for approx $20 each! :-) Then another $50 to buy 10x 73GB SAS drives.
    However, I am having problems getting the M2 working. It starts and runs and seems to be OK but when I tried installing Windows 7 Pro on it, the install fails and comes up with this error message:
    "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."
    When I click the OK button, it says "Setup will continue after restarting your computer", but it does not work.
    I have tried doing a re-install fresh but it keeps coming back to this same error.
    I have run a test of the memory and a Preboot Diagnostics test and am not seeing any errors.
    Do you have any suggestions for how I might troubleshoot this?
