Most larger ADV bikes are glorified touring bikes for long distance, highway, light trails and lugging around luggage. Which can be nice for commuting too but other bikes can fair for that too. So is it really worth the price if you don't need it for those things? Many commute and carry luggage with lighter and smaller bikes. Dual sports and supermotos that are the best choice to off road but also have in- verse flaws like highway. They can also be converted with snow skits for moto sledding. Better than snow skiing imo. It really comes down to fuzzy labeling and marketing. Might as well compare it to over landing and car camping.
Power is not the problem. Its the weight and the complexity of the electronics that are deal breakers. They should shrink the big GS to arround 700c which is the sweet spot of power and weight using the low center of gravity of the boxer.
Precisely- you cannot use all that power reasonably safely on or off road. They did a study that proved we only use a small fraction of the power of most bikes above 50bhp. As others have said weight is probably the single biggest issue. If you drop a 175kg bike off road you can pick it up but once north of 200 you’re in a world of trouble if on your own.

The most interesting bike of this year's EICMA. Let's see what happens when it goes into production, but I think I've finally found the replacement to my old F800GS.
This is a total looker, but not having the 21-18 wheel setup is a bit of a let down, maybe the final road version will have it, eager to see what it's priced like to see if it's competing with the KTM ADV or something above it.
It's an ADV bike. If the F450GS had the 21/18 wheel setup, it would be more capable off road but at the expense of on road performance. It would be similar to riding a dual sport on the street. The 19/17 wheels with high ground clearance and long suspension travel is the best scenario for good performance on and off road, as an ADV bike.
Looks amazing, sweet size and I would be looking to get one for solo ensure rides which gets me stuck at times when done with my Bison aka 1250 GS. Looking fwd..
After many years manufacturers are making good looking ADV bikes. Even though there many best looking bikes this BMW F450GS and KTM 390 Adv or SMC R are catching everyone’s eye in this show.
Not keeping my hopes up. Concepts usually never look like what they are in production. I hope I'm wrong. This bike looks mint. Take this exact look and slap the 800GS motor in there. SOLD!!!
BMW should make an adventure model of the 450 GS with an 18L tank and a 18/21 inch wheels. That would be the Goldilocks bike that's missing from the GS lineup at the moment.
If they position themselves accordingly this could be the entry of a lot of people to the brand. And I think a lot of people could make the extra effort to have one of these as a second bike
I’ve gone from a 9rt, to an f750gs. Love them both but at 5.2 tall, and a woman of a certain age, They are both stupidly heavy. So when this comes out, i will get one. Sick of struggling with weight. Well done bmw, bout time.
I hope they don’t down spec it to be cheap. I personally don’t want a “cheap” bike. I’m excited about this because it’s a premium brand. It can be more expensive than the CF moto or the KTM 390 if the components are more premium.

I've read that the F450GS will be manufactured by TVS in India, the same as the G310GS. That sounds right, and should hopefully allow the F450GS to sell for approximately US$10K.
19/17 with the F450GS tall ground clearance and long suspension travel will be very good off road while also being very good as a road bike. 21/18 wheel setup would make the F450GS ride like a dual sport on the street. This is an off road oriented adventure bike, not a dual sport.
First smaller capacity bike that’s captured my interest in a long time. As a taller person lots of small engined bikes are physically a bit small for me, but as a former 1150 GS owner this could make an ideal toy for me. Great preview video, I await with interest your full review once it’s launched.
@ There’s a couple of things. Having owned my own, and ridden many thousands of miles on work BMWs I Iike them, a bit of brand loyalty I guess. The look of the concept BMW is more appealing to me than the CF Moto, and a large part of both car and motorcycle ownership is the aesthetics, especially now as I would be buying any new bike as a toy, not as everyday transport now that I’m semi retired. Finally I still have reservations about Chinese bikes, this may be misplaced but that’s how I feel. I may change my mind on this with time, when reliability and dealer back up are proven.
@chrishart8548 coming from Enduro and MX background single cylinder is my favourite engine, and KTM 390 engine is to me the best in the class. But yeah I agree with you and if this another 270° crank I'd probably skip this but let's see the end result
Let's maybe avoid the idea that small has to be entry level. People have been wanting a full featured adv in the 400-500cc range for ever. Let's give it to them already.
The Big Moto cartel has ignored the pleas for a light off road oriented ADV bike with enough power to comfortably cruise on the interstate highways for over two decades, telling us to buy their expensive and heavy mid and full size ADV bikes. The only reason we have a Toureg 457 and F450GS is the Kove 450 Rally and CH Moto 450 Ibex.
Good to see CF Moto and Royal Enfield putting pressure on these manufacturers to produce smaller, lighter and relatively cheaper bikes

@@Liberty4Ever the dealer said standard price will be like the 310GS and above will be with extra features
21" / 18" please.
19/17 with the F450GS tall ground clearance and long suspension travel will be very good off road while also being very good as a road bike. 21/18 wheel setup would make the F450GS ride like a dual sport on the street. This is an off road oriented adventure bike, not a dual sport.
Pack it up and ship it to me right now
If BMW doesn’t make this bike I’ll be very disappointed.
First smaller capacity bike that’s captured my interest in a long time. As a taller person lots of small engined bikes are physically a bit small for me, but as a former 1150 GS owner this could make an ideal toy for me. Great preview video, I await with interest your full review once it’s launched.
What's special about this then that the cf Moto 450mt hasnt interested you?
@ There’s a couple of things. Having owned my own, and ridden many thousands of miles on work BMWs I Iike them, a bit of brand loyalty I guess. The look of the concept BMW is more appealing to me than the CF Moto, and a large part of both car and motorcycle ownership is the aesthetics, especially now as I would be buying any new bike as a toy, not as everyday transport now that I’m semi retired.
Finally I still have reservations about Chinese bikes, this may be misplaced but that’s how I feel. I may change my mind on this with time, when reliability and dealer back up are proven.
Take. My. Money.
125 degree 😮 so thats why some youtubers say it sounded like a single cyl bike
Does that mean it's a 235° crank then
What is seat height???
Maybe this will finally push KTM to bump the 390 up to a 490, I've been waiting for that for ages
Is this one seater or two seater
Fuck yeah. This is the bike. ❤
If you went round the world on that , would you be able to fix it in remote areas.
Alright between this and new 390 adv i like this a bit more
At least this isn't a single cylinder.
