As a former pro equestrian , I wore brown w/ black , accented w/ white shirt , as it coordinated w/ my bay mare ( dark brown w/ black mane, tail , legs & blk. dapples & white star on her face ) . I showed national level & received many compliments fr. fellow competitors & judges . 🖤🤎🤍 Showed many horses over the decades & had outfits to compliment each . Coordinating colors , matching or contrast , when showing horses is an art form unto itself & there are numerous businesses built around custom made clothing ( $$$$$ !! ) . I also worked in interior design & enjoy how fabrics , textures & colors influence & enrich our daily lives , even in the smallest ways . 💟
I wear navy with black for ages and irritate others with it 😂 I love it! My basic colours are dark in general so dark blue (and dark grey) break the all in black look a bit without going to colourful. To me the perfect capsule. No fashion rules at all except good quality ❤
Although I grew up with these rules, I really feel like making an effort is really the key. Textures, patterns, fit, accessorizing, keeping your clothes clean and repaired. Building interesting outfits. Knowing what suits your body and what works for your lifestyle.
The "never wear brown with black" rule originally came from the gentleman's department, and it was about suits and shoes. So you never wear a black suit with brown shoes. Brown shoes were for daytime, combined with grey or navy suits. You never wear "brown shoes after 6" - when you change into the more festive black suit 😊
I wear black with brown all the time and it’s one of my favorite looks. As for denim with denim, well duh I’ve always done that and when I read you shouldn’t, I just ignored it. Great video!
I have the problem of losing stuff when I switch handbags….probably why I have so many Burt’s Bee lip balm in rhubarb. I always check all pockets before donating any handbags, jackets, etc….finally found those Ray Bans I miss placed years ago. Still classic and not too scratched.
OMG Emily thank you so much for answering i was super super excited!!!..being here DownUnder! not too many people respond so I was so pleased we are so far from everyone in the World!!!!!!...but, we all love the Blogs and content I look forward to your videos everyweek!!!!..Thank you sending you a bit Aussie HUG!!!!!!!
You are so welcome! So happy my videos have made it all the way down under...haha, sorry, I'm sure you're over hearing that one. Thanks for your support Margaret!
Much as I resist wearing socks with sandals there is no denying how comfortable the combo is. For me, it is like many other things, a matter of which socks work with which sandals. I also love colour and print and my latest obsession has been about combining prints in my wardrobe in ways I wouldn't have a few years ago. Also love navy with black - French friends have been doing it for years. Similarly, cream with white - love it!!
I personally will not wear denim on denim or socks with sandals. However, it’s just my personal preference. I love brown and black, navy and black and mixing prints. 🥰🥰🥰
Brown with black was very popular in the early to mid eighties. I have two coats from the era that are those two colors in herringbone and the other in a tweed. Hmmm the fact that I’ve been shopping vintage for fifty years those coats may very well be from the 50s. One is LLBeane union made in USA….that’s pre 80s probably.
I was so happy last year when you said mixing brown and black was okay. I always felt it was because I’ve always gone against the grain, but felt it was a a fashion faux pas. I live in a warmer state so we’ve always worn white after Labor Day, hearing your expertise on these makes me more at ease when I go for it! Keep ‘em coming! I also miss hearing your voice experience in retail, I’ve learned so much from you!
I have done all but socks with sandals and am working on black with navy-/maybe you could do a video on this Love a good print mix and black with brown.
Happy to say I have never followed those rules. To white after Labor Day, I always thought it was just actually pointed out not to wear white pants after LD. I have white winter coats that I wore in the 90’s. I am 54 so this may be new for younger generations.
Emily, I have a question. Have you ever considered doing a video on styling outfits for those of us who have a very casual wardrobe and a very casual lifestyle? Or maybe a video on helpful pieces to wear to special occasions. I don’t even own a pair of heels. The only starting point I see is this, if I shop for something to add to my wardrobe say for a wedding or funeral or special event it should be a casual item that I can dress up like say a classic looking jumpsuit in black. Does this question make sense? S.O.S 😂❤
I always thought that the issue of black with navy or brown, fwiw, was actually lack of contrast, ie. they don't exactly match and they don't exactly contrast. Love that brown with the black.
I grew up in Chicago, and it was the #1 fashion rule: DO NOT WEAR white shoes or white pants after Labor Day. When I moved to Arizona, I kept adhering to that rule, though I do wear beige trousers in the fall/winter. White shirts and sweaters are all year round for me. The brown and black look fabulous as does navy and black. Great video, Emily.
Loving all the styling rules to break except for ......SOCKS WITH SANDALS........no way I cannot like that at all!!!!!!!!! just saying!!! love your views tho emily & your blogs....from Margaret in South Australia
I think the never wear black with brown came from men's office fashion back in the day (the 1950's/60's), never wear a brown belt or shoes with black slacks only with navy. As for wearing socks and sandles thats a firm no from me but I will wear double denim if the denim is a different colour like a black or white jacket with blue jeans but that's just my style. On a side note, I miss your wink at the end of your intro.
I don't understand how people can buy sandals that fit them and later decided to wear socks with them. I have many shoes but none of them fit me once I put on socks. I feel that you have to buy your shoes bigger and wear them with socks only as they will be too big without socks. At least that's my experience.
Liz, Exactly what I was thinking!! As far as wearing open toed/flat slides with socks, most of those (in my opinion) would fall into a slipper category..socks are ok with those.
I don't think that socks with sandals is a far cry from tights with open toed shoes or strappy heels - so I don't understand why people are so violently opposed. (Not that I wear any of these things myself!) I'm with you, I love to break fashion rules - a lot of them don't even make sense. The colour combo ones for example. The people who say black doesn't go with brown must reel in horror every time they see a dog or a cat which has both brown and black in its coat. And as for saying navy and black don't go - those people would be unable to look at a whole lot of Van Gogh paintings. The one that really gets me is "blue and green should never be seen" - oh really? Do these people close their eyes when they go outside and see the horrifying sight of green grass or trees against a blue sky? Get outta here with your nonsense, people!
Literally everything you said, I always thought (and now finally do). All these so called fashion rules seem so antiquated and bigot to me, it's almost ridiculous.
Okay, sooooo how come we didn’t get the pleasure of seeing YOU modeling YOUR socks and sandals? Hmmm huh hey?!? 😂. Also, I love when I get challenged to look at a belief that I hold strongly to, and wonder why do I hold so strongly to it? And this is one of them! When why and how did it become imprinted on my brain, that socks and sandals are super, extra VERY tacky?!? Interesting. Ick yech NO!

Thank you so much for sharing your style with us Cynthia. Love hearing about it!
7 of these: 👍, and 7 of these: THANK you. I adore navy and black and always will.
So glad I got the thumbs up on all 7. :-)
Can’t wait for socks w sandals. 💕
Me too!
I wear navy with black for ages and irritate others with it 😂 I love it! My basic colours are dark in general so dark blue (and dark grey) break the all in black look a bit without going to colourful. To me the perfect capsule. No fashion rules at all except good quality ❤
I love brown/black and navy/black. I’m still working my way up to denim on denim. The socks w/sandals thing….that’s gonna be a minute.
Haha fair enough :-)
My grandmother used to wear socks with sandals! I loved her quirky style. I'm Soo experimenting with floral socks and solid sandals!
Yes, do it! That's my favorite!
It's a fierce look. I have fun Stance socks with sandals and a sundress in the summer and it's always a great look! 🔥😎
Although I grew up with these rules, I really feel like making an effort is really the key. Textures, patterns, fit, accessorizing, keeping your clothes clean and repaired. Building interesting outfits. Knowing what suits your body and what works for your lifestyle.
Layer your feet!! 😂I’m not quite there yet but I applaud your confidence! Love these videos. Thank you 🙏🏼 ❤
Haha try it once, you'll never look back ;-)

Hahahaha that Burt's Bee lip balm made me LOL as I can definitely relate!
I love brown with black. More than navy with black. I may not wear white jeans after Labor Day but I will always wear white tops.
That's a fair :-)

Yes, the french think it's one of the most chic combos
I personally will not wear denim on denim or socks with sandals. However, it’s just my personal preference. I love brown and black, navy and black and mixing prints. 🥰🥰🥰
I'll wear a black denim jacket over jeans.
@@janetjaken1389 I would too. I guess I just won’t wear same color denim on top & bottom.
Have recently got into animal print and tartan, two bold choices that are so much fun to wear together. ❤

Thanks Emily. Ps socks, are great with sandals, especially if you havent had a pedicure. Pop on some floral socks and sandals, and away you go🙏
Yes, Love!
Love brown or tan with black....very European!
I love pattern on pattern. It's my ultimate look.
Love that!
Denim on denim is a "Canadian Tuxedo"
Love me a Canadian Tuxedo!

Yay! I'm so glad it put you at ease, that's exactly my intention!
The brown jacket looks wonderful against the grey backdrop!
Yea, it really pops!
I have done all but socks with sandals and am working on black with navy-/maybe you could do a video on this Love a good print mix and black with brown.
Yea, sure can!
The only fact of breaking the rules is great! Not respecting diktats is enjoyable! Thank you 😊
Happy to say I have never followed those rules.

Yea, I think I've heard that too. But a lot of people say just in general no white.

Yea, I've been wanting to do a video sort of like this for wedding season because I'm someone who doesn't like to wear dresses.
@@EmilyWheatley I look forward to seeing your insight on this. I ordered a jumpsuit online that seems versatile ❤️
Will be watchin' this video many times. Mucho gracias.
Cream, ecrue, sand and beige with white?
Yaaas!!
Love this video, even though on the socks with sandals I could never! ;-)
Hahaha it's a hard one for sure :-)
Great Video 📸
Thank you 🙌
Great and helpful video...as always. Still winter in MN: going to wear my white blouses. Thanks for the reminder.
Yay! Happy styling! :-)
So funny, cause in Germany the Labor Day is on First of May. So much for the absurdity of such rules. 😂
Oh wow, I didn't know that!
I always thought that the issue of black with navy or brown, fwiw, was actually lack of contrast, ie. they don't exactly match and they don't exactly contrast. Love that brown with the black.
Where did you find that contrast colour palette which appears at the beginning of your video when talking about brown?
Good for you Emily❤
I grew up in Chicago, and it was the #1 fashion rule: DO NOT WEAR white shoes or white pants after Labor Day. When I moved to Arizona, I kept adhering to that rule, though I do wear beige trousers in the fall/winter. White shirts and sweaters are all year round for me. Thank you Diane!
No white shoes, cream, winter white or beige instead. I’m from IL too.
I love to break so called style rules ❤
What about linen in winter?
Loving all the styling rules to break except for ......SOCKS WITH SANDALS........no way I cannot like that at all!!!!!!!!! just saying!!! love your views tho emily & your blogs....from Margaret in South Australia
Haha thank you Margaret! Hello to South Australia!
Those countries that don't have Labor Day are certainly scratching their heads about the white rule.
Hahaha totally!
Yes, indeed! I just took a survey to know about that. 😊
About the black and brown rule, I've always been breaking this one.😅
I have no idea when Labour day is or what it is. When is it? Why is it a day? Do you get a day off work? I’m in UK
I’ve broken every last rule…😂❤❤
i am still not to the point of wearing socks with sandals😂😂
Hahaha it takes time :-)
I like it! I think it adds cool interest with fun socks or a unique texture. I also love socks with heels, but I don't wear heels. The look is 🔥😎
LOL! Do you have any rules that you do not break?
Hmmmmm.....not really. I have personal preferences, but that's the extent of it.
I think the never wear black with brown came from men's office fashion back in the day (the 1950's/60's), never wear a brown belt or shoes with black slacks only with navy. Ooooo me too, may need to bring back the wink! That makes sense about the men's office wear.
If we did not believe in denim on denim before: just look at the runways this year, it is all over the place!!!!
Definitely!
I don't understand how people can buy sandals that fit them and later decided to wear socks with them. I have many shoes but none of them fit me once I put on socks. Such a good point about the tights with open toed shoes!! Thank you JSP!!
I don’t know. I just don’t want to feel ridiculous. Not a trailblazer here! 😢😅
❤
Socks with Birkies. Yes!
Oh definitely!!
I just love you 😘
Ahhh thank you! :-)
I have learned a lot from you You must be healthy
Thank you!
Literally everything you said, I always thought (and now finally do). All these so called fashion rules seem so antiquated and bigot to me, it's almost ridiculous.
🥰
:-)
I remember when it was only older men who wore socks with sandals and it was a horribly dated no. I guess they were on to something…😂
Haha you're right. But it's like how the whole "Dad" sneaker is now in fashion :-)
Hello, we have a product that we think is very suitable for you.
It is a hair straightener. Are you interested?
I’m probably from a different planet because :
A. I never heard of these.
B. I’m breaking these always.
✨✨✨

Haha I know, I should've shared my examples. But I will do on some upcoming videos
Wear socks with sandals when you need a pedicure!☺️
Yes! :-)
I think these "rules" depend on where you live, and whether you have easy access to a washing machine 🤣
