I've heard stories about her on-set. She is very much a 'working class' actor. By that, I mean, that if she is hired for a role, she doesn't just act on-set. She helps the gaffers to carry the lights and reflectors. She takes out the trash from the break-room. She puts coffee on for the extras. She engrosses herself in the entire production...everything from sweeping glitter off the stage floor to laying down her lines in front of the lens. I have so much respect for her and for her work ethic.
TBH, I would honestly add Jamie Lee Curtis on my list on actors who won Oscar’s for the wrong role. She should’ve been nominated and won for “True Lies.”
I was SO glad she won. She's been an advocate for natural ageing ever since going gray and refusing to dye her hair. Being four years older than she, it's a positive for me when looking in the mirror.
I don't understand why Stephanie Hsu was considered out of the running, she was massively important to the movie and her performance had way more to it than Curtis's. If EEAAO was going to lift someone in that category to a win, I believe it should have been her tbh
I fully acknowledge that Jamie likely won for reasons aside from her performance, such as her overall career, the legacy she represents, the perception that she is overdue for this kind of recognition, the wide-open nature of her category, and the juggernaut of a film she was in. Having said that, I think she deserves the Oscar on performance alone. I thought so when I first saw the movie in March of 2022, but I doubted the performance would survive the pitfalls of awards season and wondered if the movie itself would even survive. But it is a specific and tonally complex performance of a role that I doubt even existed on the page, which is further evinced by how much credit the Daniels have given her for inventing aspects of the role. I cannot imagine another actor (even a more respected, more versatile actor) making Deirdre register in the way that JLC did. One of her hallmarks as an actor is that she throws herself entirely into every role and this is no exception. That she was remembered at all, in that role, with everything that happens in that movie is a testament to how good she is. It has been disheartening to see her work dismissed, especially given how atypical the film and performance are. If anything, can’t we be pleased they voted for something so radical and unusual? I can’t think of another Oscar-winning or -nominated performance like it. Which brings me to something I find especially great about this win. As mentioned before, Jamie was overdue for this, and the main reason she hadn’t received this recognition previously is due to the kinds of films she typically makes: comedies, thrillers, and horror movies. Her filmography isn’t the Academy’s cup of tea, so how great is it that she managed to win an Oscar without breaking her own mold? She didn’t have to do a biopic or embody an Oscar-friendly trope to finally hear her name called.
It's annoying that folks keep saying she's long overdue as if she had Meryl Streeps career and was repeatedly shut out of the Oscars. She has never once given an Oscar worthy performance further proof of this is the fact A Fish Called Wanda is being mentioned as her Oscar worthy performance and it isn't even an exceptional film on it's own. Her career is more like a job for er. No controversy. The one time she played a prostitute it was an Eddie .Murphy comedy
She won for her mother, and the freak she got for a son.......she's been a lousy actress. She's been doing Halloween since 1979....only role she can play
In the Oscars defense, Jaime Lee Curtis' win was something of a makeup from not giving her any nomination from some of her best work like A Fish Called Wanda and True Lies. As for the Supporting Actress, I was mostly rooting for Stephanie Hsu and Hong Chau. Although they didn't win, both Stephanie and Hong will have amazing movie roles now and the future.
Well that defense won't work. This was Angela Bassett's second nomination and she also lost for "What's Love got to do with it." No it was Jaime Curtis legacy award and also she is a nepo-baby. I love Jaime Lee Curtis and that what it is.
I love both Jamie and Angela. Both phenomenal actresses who are long overdue for this kind of recognition. If either won I would have been happy. Im happy for Jamie. One factor I thought of is, the future for these two women. Jamie, in my opinion is unlikely to get nominated again. Angela on the other hand has the opportunity to take a leading actress trophy if the right movie comes along. She will be even more overdue, tremendous talent, and she just has an ability to draw you in with any of her projects. So I think they voted for Jamie cause she was great, she was overdue for it, and is unlikely to get another nod in the future. Angela was great, overdue for it, but has more potential and more of a build up to a win in the future. Hopefully a best actress.
Bassett gave a overwrought performance in a mediocre film, only memorable for the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman I have no problem with Jamie Lee Curtis winning but Stephanie Hsu gave the best performance
I still find it crazy that Michelle Williams would’ve more than likely swept this category had she’d done the smart thing by campaigning in supporting as opposed to lead. She would’ve had that massive overdue narrative going for her, and The Fabelmans is still a beloved film where she could’ve been it’s sole win.
I appreciate that and it's probably true but I'm glad she didn't category hijack because that role Is Lead. She's quite honorable for that and much more.
@@timgriffin3368 honorable? Or foolish? That role hands down was not lead lol. Sammy was the one and only lead in the film. Michelle was a supporting character.
I dont actually think it was up to her the studio decided to put her in lead. However the academy could have just said no we are going to put you in another category like they did with La Keith Stanfield
I’ve been wanting Bassett to win an Oscar for awhile, but not for a Marvel movie. She was definitely robbed for What’s Love Gotta Do w/It. I feel like her talent should be recognized for something more significant than a superhero movie. She is a phenomenal actress, whether it’s on the small screen or silver screen. I hope she picks a movie worthy of an Oscar. I was more upset with Chad Boseman not winning for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. I mean, he suffered, literally, for his craft during his sickest. Plus, the way the awards show set up the lineup that year, they led A LOT of people to believe Boseman would come out victorious.
Jamie winning the award kinda felt like her winning for her entire body of work, but also her parents' body of work. Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh have made some of the most important films of all time. And one thing people really like about Jamie Lee Curtis is that though she is a nepo baby, she's always been hyper aware, and very humble about that fact. That made her speech extra beautiful. And she wasn't even expecting to win clearly. Is it right for the Oscars to pick a winner based on a career? I don't know... but if anyone deserved it, it would have to be Jamie.
@@lilrysosa I never argued about who gave the best performance. That's ultimately a pointless discussion. Some people preferred TAR over EEAAO in the best picture category. Some people preferred Puss in Boots over Pinocchio... What I'm saying is: if we're going to pick a winner because of her career anyway, at least I'm okay with Jamie Lee Curtis winning, because she actually has an impressive career.
I disagree with the idea that she was awarded for her entire body of work. I do think both Jamie Lee Curtis's whole career *and* Angela Bassett's were probably key factors in how the Academy voted, though, but not in the way most people think. For Angela Bassett, Queen Ramonda feels a lot like performances we've seen from her before. "Waiting to Exhale," "American Horror Story: Coven," and "What's Love Got to do With It" all show strong similarities to what we kinda all expect from an Angela Bassett role, now. A strong, matriarchal character who's been screwed over (usually by a man) who finally hits a breaking point and delivers a highly emotional monologue full of tears and resilience. It feels familiar, and that may have played against her. For Jamie Lee Curtis, she doesn't really have a history of "serious," roles. She's widely known for horror, action, and comedies with none of her previous roles being anything like this one. Additionally, she *completely* transformed for this role. It kinda reminded me of how Gabourey Sidibe changed for her character in Precious. The voice was different, the posture was different-- every aspect of who the actor is in real life was *gone* on-screen. It wasn't a big, flashy performance, but it was grounded, and dramatically different from anything she's done before. So, yeah. I agree both of their whole careers came into play, but it wasn't as straightforward as saying "who has the better acting resume," because Angela Bassett would take that pretty easily.
@@blakegillpuente3904 It’s funny because I considered her character comic relief in everything everywhere all at once. That helped balance the family drama and multiverse chaos. But I wouldn’t have considered it a serious role for Jamie.
I’m with you. In the weeks that have passed, I’ve managed to separate my disappointment about Angela losing from my genuine happiness for JLC. Plus she’s been so openly happy about it so I just hope that Angela gets another shot.
JLC did a lot in this role, she was iconic from her first shot, funny but very seriously in her character, downright scary at times, and also emotional even in the context of hot dog finger world. That plus every other reason and her humble gracious energy, makes her 100% deserving. Angela and Stephanie will still get theirs I reckon
I saw EEAAO before the awards hype and completely blind. JLC's performance really stood out and she disappeared into the role. Its a unique and unusual role that works as a microcosm of the emotional arc of the movie itself.
Do I love her? Yes. Does she deserve for everything she did in her carrier? Hell yea! Was it The best performance? I dont think so. I feel like Stephanie gave the best performance
Yes, there are other better acting performance of Jamie Lee than this one. But, no way Stephanie is better than her. People think her as the best. It just happens that she is the central character and her role is crucial for wholeness of the movies. She is on every scene, and her flamboyant costumes drives more attention than her act, but they overlook her mediocre acting . There are better options than her to fill the role.(of course, I'm not saying though she is bad) Jamie gave everything on this movie. .. First of all, Her nuanced portrayal of Deirdre is quite fascinating than histrionic portrayal of Jobu Topaku . She is natural and versatile: she can be comedic, she can scream, cry, be pitiful, be funny.. she can have all of these different characters in her every version while maintaining her sorrowful persona.. She can make you intrigue and that you are curious about her in the entire duration of movie. that's how good she is...
Loved the video. I think the one thing many people neglected to focus on was that Jamie Lee Curtis was re-imagined in this role. I remember telling people that that was Jamie Lee playing the IRS agent and on first glance and they didn't believe me--that's how transformational this role was. Just like Streep did and so many others who actually were transformed into someone much less attractive and willing to go that extra mile, I feel she was rewarded for "acting"--portraying a role very far from her real persona. I picked her from the first time I saw the movie and was thrilled when it came to fruition.
I saw the film after the ceremony, and actually in its absurdity relies the magic of it, I totally agree with you saying that this is a role for a true comedian like JLC, I think no one could pull it off like she did… excelent video as always Brian… thanks
When you become a cheerleader for others you get the benefits of being that cheerleader and I love the fact that Jamie Lee Curtis won in the category that her mother was nominated for PYSCHO 53 years ago.
My thing is this, if we’re going off of legacy and body of work, why not go with Angela Bassett. Especially since she is a previous nominee. It doesn’t escape me how she and Curtis had the same narrative, and yet, they went with the white actress. And if people wanted to shower EEAAO with awards, why not go with Stephanie Hsu. Either way there were better options for the Oscar. I personally would’ve nominated Dolly DeLeon or Lashawna Lynch over Jamie Lee Curtis but that’s just me
You sort of answered your own question. Angela had the legacy aspect behind her, Stephanie had the front runner behind her. Jamie Lee Curtis had the legacy AND front runner behind her (I also think her media tour + speeches were some of the best this awards season too). In a year where supporting actress was so spread out, JLC just had the perfect storm that pushed her to the front.
@@WizKlafka She got it because of her support for the community via her formally known son now Trans daughter Ruby Guest. Let's see it for what it is.
Now I know how important campaigning is for a movie to win an Oscar (or to be nominated, like how Andrea Risebourgh got hers), I truly think the fact that Jamie sincerely loves her movie and kept promoting the film is such a big factor for voters to consider. Her performance might not be the best in the supporting race, but her effort to campaign the film and her costars really is just amazing. Deserved!
I'm happy she won. Her Oscar acceptance speech is definitely one of the most memorable ones in Oscar history. Such speeches can be super cant or boring, or rambling, but not JLC. ❤ SHE IS AMAZING😊
I’ve felt JLC’s win is very similar to Marisa Tomei’s win for My Cousin Vinny. A character piece that’s directly tied to the lead character. Comedic. A burst of a performance.
I like JLC’s performance, and appreciate that she has also created the role herself like finding an IRS agent’s picture and has given life to it. Taking up a role is not just about the acting part. Many people do not reconize her at first but at the same time do find her role interesting and I want to see her story line to develop further
exactly! It was an amazing performance, i don't know why some people would think it's the wrong role to win! gosh, that was a really difficult role and she gave it her all, i would say!
Please be serious, her character was not as consequential as Stephanie’s for her not only to be nominated but to actually win. eeaao wouldn’t be what it is without Stephanie’s character, imo she is the heart of the movie. There isn’t a single good explanation for why she would win over her not to talk of the other nominees
Jamie should’ve just gotten the Honorary Oscar Award. That’s what the award is for, someone who has a huge body of work that should be honored. I honestly didn’t mind if JLC was nominated for Supporting Actress, but I wished Stephanie Hsu should’ve been nominated for a second Leading Actress.
I have voted for Jamie Lee Curtis to win for best supporting actress. I thought she’s a deadpan perfection as a tax auditor in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. Her entire performance in the movie was brilliantly played.
EXACTLY! I hate it that Brian Rowe doubted her to win. In fact, if Basset is the comparison, I dare say, JLC's role is far more meaty and far more spectacular.
@@tremilius Jamie Lee Curtis, whose performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” actually lasts for 17 minutes and 15 seconds, or 12.38% of the film.
She deserves it. She's uplifting other peers to win also that's why it helps her to win an oscar. Such a humble actress and deserving also to win that best supp actress❤
Looking back on it all, JLC wasn’t my first choice at all. But, she gave a performance that was heartfelt, funny, menacing and emotional. Most actors never get to do that in their entire careers.
I liked your point about JLC winning not for an Oscar bait drama, but for an authentic performance that matched her varied body of work across horror, comedy, and action films. EEAAO distilled all of that into one role for JLC. It's wild how many people are salty over her win. Guess that's why it tastes that much sweeter. People wrote her off thinking JLC wasn't the type of person who could win an Oscar and that her performance wasn't on the same level as her category peers. Thank goodness, the voting was left to experts who know what to look for and not armchair critics. EEAAO was the most exciting film of the year and the four veteran actors who won their Oscars deserved it.
My favorite speech of the entire awards season has to go to James Hong at the SAG! I’m soooo glad Everything Everywhere all at once got sooo many awards especially at the Oscars! Love that film!
First off cute dog and great looking place! Since I only watched EEAAO, I would have given to Stephanie Hsu. Her character was far stronger and central to the plot of the movie. That being said, this was certainly a legacy award. I bet voters looked at the ballot and said "you're 64 years old, your parents didn't win, you've been around a long time and you happen to be in the critically acclaimed movie. When is this going to happen again?" She is tremendously talented. Her character wasn't bad by any means. She won fair and square.
Well your comments clearly shows that she didn’t win fair and square. It’s about what is the best performance, not about legacy awards. Angela Bassett and Stephanie Hsu were much better performances.
@@1991jamesbond I never said she did not win fair and square. She did. What's done is done. I easily would have given it to Stephanie Hsu. She stole the show! I haven't seen either black panther. However, Angela Bassett is tremendously talented. She should have all the awards!
I'll tell you why she won. She campaigned for it on social media. But not for herself, per se. She posted nothing but positive, supportive pictures and posts of her cast mates and the movie, but not too many so as to be annoying, right up to that Sunday night. It was a brilliant public relations campaign that kept her on everyone's mind, but not in a way that was calling attention to herself. And I say, "Well done."
Overrated as HeLL you MCU simps. I m sure you think Scarlet witch also deserve an Oscar too? Joy/Stephenie from Everything EAAO deserve the Oscar more for her performance
Sometimes people win for their performance as well as their body of work. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I'm so glad Jamie won. She deserved it in my opinion.
I honestly loved Jamie Lee Curtis in the movie! As you said she could’ve been in an Oscar bait movie and give a typical Oscar performance. But she didn’t. She chose to do a role that was wild and against type. And I’m all for that! Would I have preferred Stephanie Hsu get the award? Absolutely, but you can’t deny Jamie was a standout in the movie as well. I take this as a more comedic oscar win, like Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost.
I've always thought that the Reason Five is the main reason for her win. A rising tide( which was EEAAO) lifts all boats and she masterfully rode the tide waves.
Bang on! This was perfectly narrated! I totally agree! I felt the SAGs got it right! For ALL acting categories! This translated to Oscar’s and I spent the night crying from happiness at the uplifting and deserved wins of these incredible artist! Thank you! Bravo! 👏👏👏
Surprising that Angela Basset didn’t win. Nothing against Jamie Lee Curtis, but it looked to be Basset’s year for the most part. I guess it was a year where those who won at SAG won the Academy Award. Thanks for the video Brian, keep up the great work and have a great weekend!
Who would have thought that a movie with a “hotdog finger people” love scene could have won so many awards? She was spectacularly underrated in True Lies.
I saw the writing on the wall considering her PR push months in advance. It seemed like suddenly 6 months before the ceremony Jamie Lee was EVERYWHERE. And now that she’s won, POOF gone! her team did a great job at pushing her as lovable, “unsung” Hollywood royalty.
Hi, Brian. I watched you and a lot of movie critic/pundit videos on TH-cam predicting who would win leading up to the Oscars. And some of them erroniously said that Angela Basset was in only 10 minutes of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, so she didn't deserve to win because of that. In my opinion, those critics couldn't have actually seen the movie because if they had, they would know that Basset was in over two-thirds of the 3-hour long movie. She was front and center for most of the movie. I'd even argue that she should have been in the Best Actress category instead of Best Supporting Actress! I say all this to say, when Oscar experts put out that narrative, they kind of ruined Angela's chance for an Oscar win, in my opinion!
I thought her performance in Freaky Friday was masterful. No shade to any of the other nine million actors who've been in body-switching movies, but she was one of a very few who fully committed to showing the complexity and nuance of a teenage character, rather than just going for broad farce. I didn't expect her to receive an Oscar nomination for it, but Tom Hanks scored one for Big, so it wasn't that unrealistic. As for her Oscar win now, it's a great career capper for an actress who was not to proud to sell yogurt for a number of years.
Pity award for a long in the tooth actress who will never get another chance. FYI, it's always been an open secret the winners are always PREDETERMINED long before the actual ceremony.
Another incredible video, Brian! Your reactions are pretty much just like mine when Michelle Yeoh won, I was immensely elated for her. So well deserving and groundbreaking. Your reactions are delightfully contagious, when you smile and jump, everyone else can feel it. :) And your explanations pretty much match up with mine. SAG & BAFTA are pretty much a seesaw in different years, with the pendulum usually swaying to SAGs one year for an actor and the BAFTA for the other year (usually SAG & BAFTA means 100% lock). With SAG going 4/4 with actors this year, I think we're going to go with their hunches for next year (especially since BAFTA went ZERO for 4 this year). I love Jamie winning for her overall career but she was my personal fourth favorite behind Angela, Stephanie, and Hong Chau for me. I do hope Angela gets a more meatier role in a non franchise film that could hopefully get her enough industry support to finally win, she is long overdue.
I love her and I think the acting community got behind her from SAG. Partly because of her Hollywood pedigree. But also, in her long career she has touched base with so many actors.
You mentioned of the possibility of Kerry Condon doing the Mark Rylance type of route in winning the Oscar. In all honestly, I didn’t really know who Kerry was until the awards season for Banshees. She’s been in Marvel films playing the voice roles, and some American TV projects. Though she’s not yet in Rylance’s level when it comes to name recognition prior to her Oscar nomination. I think one of the reasons why Mark Rylance won over Sylvester Stallone for Best Supporting Actor is because of Mark’s prestige in the theatre world. He IS THE Mark Rylance, one of Britain’s greatest actors of the stage. If there’s Olivier and Gielgud in one generation, and Ian McKellen and Judi Dench on another, there’s Mark Rylance in his generation. He won multiple Oliviers and Tonys, even if his screen credits are few or not much highlighted prior to Bridge of Spies (and eventually he got booked to more movie projects too). The British bloc of the Academy really helped. I guess there’s also the Theater bloc of the AMPAS, though I’m not sure how many mostly stage actors are Academy members. They invited Nathan Lane a few years ago, as well as Patti LuPone. I’m predicting Simon Russell Beale and Ben Daniels (Rylance’s fellow contemporaries in the West End) to be Academy members soon, who both have good screen CVs. I look forward for your Oscar analysis on Rylance vs. Stallone for your future videos!
For the first time watching videos about the Oscars, I have been moved to tears as I learned about Jamie Lee Curtis - the kind of person she is and what she did and said. I don’t really care why she won. I am just really glad she did!
Wonderful video. The only thing missing was your “Thankssomuchforwatching” at the end. We NEED your trademarks Brian. They give comfort and consistency to your subscribers. 😀
Happy, but, let's be real; if it were truly based on That performance in That movie that's being nominated, Stephanie Hsu would easily have won, but that's the Awards circuit.
I do think some of JLC's TV movies back in the 80s and 90s showed incredible range, and had they been cinematic films, they might of been decent contenders, more so then her genre films the Acedemy ignored 30 years ago! In today's environment, 'Nicholas' Gift' could be such an Oscar Baity film Also PS - your reaction shots are the cutest! Thanks for sharing!
You can't help but love Jamie... I mean ever since I saw true lies (esp.that bedroom dance scene with arnie) 😂😂😂🤭and then playing Lindsey Lohan's outrageously funny and adorable mom in Freaky Friday... From Scream Queen, to hilarious sexy siren to playing a mom and then now... She's sooo endearing... LOVE you Jamie You ROCK!!!😘😘😘😘
JLC won her Oscar for all of the reasons in the video but also because when you watch the movie, at no time do you say "that's Jamie Lee Curtis". All you see is Deirdre Beaubeirdre, the IRS agent. If you didn't know in advance, you'd never suspect it was Jamie Lee Curtis.
THE SCREAM QUEEN!!!! I’m proud of her but I do believe that she should have won an Oscar for her performance in any of the last three “Halloween” movies she gave us the best portrayal of Laurie Strode! The next time Angela Bassett is nominated she better win cause if not we RIDE AT DAWN! Our OG FINAL GWORL won an Oscar. Now I need her and Angela in a movie doing something together and I can die in peace. Angela not winning reminds me of Glenn Close and “The Wife” when girlie was gaslit like she was gonna win and then they called Olivia’s name. At a certain point academy voters have to be be for real like y’all just passing up greatness LIKE WHY!!!
So much mentation! But not too much, just enough conditional probability assessment ;). My film reviewer friend has labeled EEAAO as 'beloved' by fans. Among those fans are many Academy members, as you can hear during the Oscars presentations, they screamed out whenever it's mentioned. That film spoke to viewers at such a deep level, and I believe that's what carried it during awards season. That deep connection resonated and remained in people's minds for a long time. It sure did in me.
Your reaction to Michelle Yeoh's win was identical to my reaction for Jamie Lee Curtis. I believe it was truly deserved....she transformed herself for the role, unlike Kerry Condon (a young Irish girl playing...a young Irish girl); she was helped no doubt by the EEAAO juggernaut, which most of her co-nominees would not be; and she truly was a SUPPORTING character, unlike Stephanie Hsu, who was really the second lead and, in my opinion, nominated in the wrong category. It's a rare but truly wonderful instance of the Academy getting it right!
Brian I enjoyed your videos very much! just a few ideas: maybe you can make a video about EEAAO award season analysis. It didn't start well at GG, decent win at CCA but Michelle missed, major defeat at bafta, sweep at SAG, then momuntent changed, then DGA PGA WGA win leading to oscar sweep. It was a bumpy road. I would like to help sort out more details(especially on A24 and how EEAAO casts championed each other) if you are interested in doing such a video. anyway keep up the good work!
I think you almost got it right. It's the way that she talked in those interviews about the movie, her career, and her parents in such a giddy and humble way. All that she expressed in her SAG speech she had done similarly in countless interviews--instead of talking about the nomination, she talked about her career with a gratefulness and with such a positive buoyancy, that it was infectious. So yes, she campaigned, but it was the way that she did it that made voters want to give it to her.
There is a 6th. reason Jamie Lee Curtis won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress--she is a daughter of Hollywood. Every daughter of Hollywood who has been nominated for an Oscar has won, with the exception of Kate Hudson.
Excellent points. I never saw Angela Bassett winning because she’s in a Marvel movie. I think being in an Oscar darling movie helped. Also, she is a second generation (nepo baby) so it helped Gwyneth Paltrow and Mia Sorvino.
In spite of the initial shock and feeling somewhat conflicted, I also felt such immense joy at her winning. She threw all of herself into supporting the film and lifting up her castmates. She celebrated them at every turn. This moment should've been a celebration for her, but it quickly devolved into a lot of people displaying their bitterness. I can understand feeling that it wasn't the right outcome, but to tear someone down to make a point? I also don't know why people, who don't care so much for the Oscars, are the first to fling their negative opinions. I will say, in my own opinion, I don't think we should take the Oscars so seriously and should try to just have fun with wins, like these, that make our jaws drop. They're why we return to watch, let's be real, we can't wait to see if any upsets occur. Good for Jamie Lee! And thank you for your video, a great way to start my day!
Hypothetically if Angela Bassett's role in the first Black Panther movie had been given more importance, similar to her role in the sequel, she could likely have won an Oscar when Black Panther was at the peak of its popularity a few years ago. At that time, Black Panther was creating the same buzz and excitement as Everything Everywhere's success at this year's Oscars for Asian actors.
Fun fact: Christopher Guest is a hereditary peer in the United Kingdom, as the 5th Baron Haden-Guest. So Jamie Lee Curtis could be addressed as "Lady Haden-Guest" in the UK if she wanted to be (she doesn't).
My issue with Supporting categories is that too many leads are going there to try and win because they can't do it in the Lead Category. Brendan Gleason should not have been in this category, he was a co-Lead. Mahershala Ali should not have won for Green Book, he was co-Lead. Michelle Williams was the Lead Actress, yet so many people thought she should drop down to supporting just to win. This category was created to honor character actors. I think they should make it a rule that you can't be in more than say 40% of a movie and be considered supporting. Jamie reminds me of Marisa Tomei who people still think shouldn't have won. I'll bet there's hardly anyone who remember the other actresses and movies that lost to her, but have probably watched My Cousin Vinny numerous times. The way Oscars are going now "And you mentioned something about not being on the screen enough" an actress such as Beatrice Straight will never win again.
True Marisa is the one you remember. Hung might have had a better shot if The Whale had more nominations. Not to take anything away from Jamie . I thought it was rather obvious after SAG she would win the Oscar .
She deserved it. Period. Performance+amazing promotion work. Talented actress, iconic AND always smart as a whip. Bassett felt like she had it in the pocket for some reason.
I always felt that Curtis' performance was a bit underestimated. She's a very important part of a complicated, mind-bending film, and, on repeat viewings one will see how good she really is. Bassett on the other hand was never on my radar, nor was it on many pundits radar even when the film was released. I remember one vlogging site who, when they finally saw the film, said 'we can take Bassett off the possible nominees list.' To me, it was the weakest of the five, a performance I've seen a thousand times before. I really loved both Hsu and Chou and really thought with Chou's other great performance in "The Menu" she should have had a great shot to win.
Every moment Jamie Lee Curtis had onscreen in EEAAO was spectacular. I wanted her character to have more screen time, but I found those few scenes very powerful.
I really hate it when people say this, because honestly they don't create that many great roles for Black Women in their 60s.....this may have been her last chance outside of an honorary oscar
@@Camen_Sandie yeah but something tells me it’s more about AB. She is very selective of her roles and doesn’t chase Oscar’s. So hopefully someone sends her a worthy script for a leading lady role.
why does she need reasons for winning? She won! Good for her let her have this, she has always been an amazing actor and has brought me many emotions in many of her films, is that not what her job is?
I really enjoyed your video by the way. Very thoughtful and it's clear you put a lot of thought into it. When they called her name on Oscar night I shouted out that Halloween won. That's just me, so. I feel that your 6th reason really hit the nail on the head. It was a fitting tribute to a fine actress who yes, got her start in the horror genre and may have fallen by the wayside like a lot of other actors who started there. But she didn't, she had and has, staying power. I think it was Roger Ebert who called her one of the most intelligent people in Hollywood and I of course have never met the woman, but I can imagine she is. I think she is a lovely lady who as you correctly pointed out, is so generous, especially when it came to her co-stars in EEAAO. I am thrilled they all won too. I would have liked The Banshees... to have won for Original Screenplay though. The man has lost for 2 fantastic screenplays, In Bruges and Three Billboards but I feel his day will finally come. As for Curtis, her day had come and I look forward to seeing her more now, seeing as winners generally get a work boost after a win. It took me three tries to get into EEAAO but I finally got it and loved it and will rewatch it in the future. Curtis was a fantastic support, as it should be, to Yeoh, who I adore. Good for her. And as I started by saying, deep in my heart where it will always stay, Halloween got something too. Thanks again for a thoughtful and entertaining video Brian.
Good performance but not beyond the pale. Certainly not subtle.
All the career award winners basically won for the wrong roles
just because her acting in EEAAO looks easy ,doesnt mean its easy
Does it really matter what she won for the important thing is she won. It was a very fun interesting role
I think her best movies where a couple of her TV movies that wouldn't of been eligible for an Oscar
I was SO glad she won. She's been an advocate for natural ageing ever since going gray and refusing to dye her hair. Being four years older than she, it's a positive for me when looking in the mirror.
Absolutely!
I don't understand why Stephanie Hsu was considered out of the running, she was massively important to the movie and her performance had way more to it than Curtis's. If EEAAO was going to lift someone in that category to a win, I believe it should have been her tbh
Would’ve been great!
This. Best comment on here.
Couldn’t agree more!
Thanks for watching!
I wish Stephanie Hsu and Hong Chau keep making beautiful movies as well.
Holly Hunter, The Piano, superb
@@timgriffin3368 She a mute.
@terrancemoore496 Ms Bassett, respectfully, couldn't do that performance on her Best day!!! And, respectfully, that'd be 'she's a mute'
This is So Spot On!!!
She def deserves to win Best Actress somewhere down the line. I think she will.
After everything, I will settle for nothing less than Best Actress Oscar for Angela. It's way past long overdue!!!
Bassett gave a overwrought performance in a mediocre film, only memorable for the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman
I have no problem with Jamie Lee Curtis winning but Stephanie Hsu gave the best performance
@@williamburnham3659 u seriously saying that…? Angela and Letitia carried the movie w/o Boseman, made it just as great tbh
@@65g4 and Kate Winslet💯
Let's just all correct everyone else. What a society
Yes, thanks for watching!
I don't know... but if anyone deserved it, it would have to be Jamie.
over ANGELA BASSETT?!
Excellent perspective!! Thanks for watching!
Yes, Angela deserves a win!
She's very well liked by the Hollywood crowd...she also campaigned brilliantly during the Oscar season.
That is important, campaig the movie
So true!
Thanks for watching!
I saw EEAAO before the awards hype and completely blind. JLC's performance really stood out and she disappeared into the role.
Its a unique and unusual role that works as a microcosm of the emotional arc of the movie itself.
Thanks for watching!
Was she my first choice to win? No. Do i love the fact that she still won? Hell yeah.
👍👍👍
Do I love her? Yes. Does she deserve for everything she did in her carrier? Hell yea! Was it The best performance? I dont think so. I feel like Stephanie gave the best performance
Yup!
Definitely
Yes, there are other better acting performance of Jamie Lee than this one.
But, no way Stephanie is better than her. People think her as the best. It just happens that she is the central character and her role is crucial for wholeness of the movies. She is on every scene, and her flamboyant costumes drives more attention than her act, but they overlook her mediocre acting . There are better options than her to fill the role.(of course, I'm not saying though she is bad)
Jamie gave everything on this movie.
Comparing JLC in _EEAAO_ to Meryl Streep? Lol.

I personally would’ve nominated Dolly DeLeon or Lashawna Lynch over Jamie Lee Curtis but that’s just me
I feel the same way you do
You sort of answered your own question.
Because she was in the Best Picture winner, it’s pretty simple
Bassett would’ve been a great win!
Deserved!
Yes, good point!
I'm happy she won. Her Oscar acceptance speech is definitely one of the most memorable ones in Oscar history. Such speeches can be super cant or boring, or rambling, but not JLC. ❤ SHE IS AMAZING😊
Agreed!!
I’ve felt JLC’s win is very similar to Marisa Tomei’s win for My Cousin Vinny. A character piece that’s directly tied to the lead character. Comedic. A burst of a performance.
Good comparison!
But at the same time it felt not a upset
Thanks for watching!
Yes, well said!

Looking back on it all, JLC wasn’t my first choice at all. But, she gave a performance that was heartfelt, funny, menacing and emotional. Most actors never get to do that in their entire careers.
Meh...

Very true!
TRUE! Again, if you compare her role and performance with that of Basset's- hers is so much better and way more spectacular. she did everything!

When is this going to happen again?"
She is tremendously talented. Her character wasn't bad by any means. She won fair and square.

Interesting perspective!
Love!!
I love Freaky Friday and I thought both JLC and Lindsey Lohan were terrific in the film and had great chemistry.
Because she's earned it and she deserved it. The end. ❤

Thanks so much!!

Great observations, thank you!

Your "reasons" left out the fact that it was an excellent performance.
Thanks for watching!
She is totally an actor you cannot hate ❤ I'm happy she won😊
Love her so much!!
Haha, thanks for watching!
I love her win! So humble!
❤️❤️❤️
I was so shocked...but very happy that she won!
Great ideas!
@@TheAwardsContender How do i contact you
I think you almost got it right.
Yes!
You’re welcome!
The difference is that EEAAO is actually a great and engaging arthouse film, while BP is a typical Marvel film which has POC characters.
Just saying BP was the better film than the sequel, and hype would have helped Bassett in that scenario
@@DJarvis1987 I agree
Yes, good point!
She was phenomenal in it. Well deserved.
Fun fact: Christopher Guest is a hereditary peer in the United Kingdom, as the 5th Baron Haden-Guest. So Jamie Lee Curtis could be addressed as "Lady Haden-Guest" in the UK if she wanted to be (she doesn't).
Haha fascinating!
Thanks for watching!
She deserved it. Period. Performance+amazing promotion work. Talented actress, iconic AND always smart as a whip. Bassett felt like she had it in the pocket for some reason.
❤️❤️❤️
She deserves the win after all these years she one awesome.
All I can say (again) is..... WTG & CONGRATULATIONS Jamie Lee Curtis !!!
❤️❤️❤️
Great points!
I do agree she did merit the award. However, I do sympathize with how crushing that moment was for Angela. I wouldn’t have been able to smile either.
That was so sad!
Im so glad she won. I have to be honest after her Sag win i still thought Kerry Condon could win but i was proved wrong. Pleasantly so
haha I want to see all your reactions haha so much fun!!
😂😂😂
Every moment Jamie Lee Curtis had onscreen in EEAAO was spectacular. I wanted her character to have more screen time, but I found those few scenes very powerful.
Stephanie was better but glad for her.
She won because she DESERVED to win. DUH.
I'm really happy for her, I'm sure that Angela Basset will find her way to get the Oscar for a leading role, supporting is a small category for her
I really hate it when people say this, because honestly they don't create that many great roles for Black Women in their 60s.....this may have been her last chance outside of an honorary oscar
@@Camen_Sandie THANK YOU!!!!!!
Fingers crossed!
@@Camen_Sandie yeah but something tells me it’s more about AB. She is very selective of her roles and doesn’t chase Oscar’s. So hopefully someone sends her a worthy script for a leading lady role.
She played the role very good; she deserves it.
👏👏👏
I said it on Twitter and I'll say it again here - a genre (career) actress winning for a genre movie HOW RARE IS THAT?!?!
why does she need reasons for winning? She won! Good for her let her have this, she has always been an amazing actor and has brought me many emotions in many of her films, is that not what her job is?
Absolutely, thanks for watching!
Because someone finally believed she was capable of more even if she didn't believed herself. It was a very complicated character for all of them.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
I think you wrong. She worked hard to get this done, for others. And she has respect in the industry. She deserves her moment. Scream Queen ❤
