The fact that Meryl Streep was nominated for "Florence Foster Jenkins" and "Into the Woods" but Toni Colette wasn't for "Hereditary" says everything about the Oscars.
seriously. I already really liked Toni Colette and then I saw Hereditary... Now I absolutely LOVE her. she's always great but that was a standout performance in an equally standout movie that should have definitely been given more acknowledgement
The thing is when Toni Colette gives a great performance, unfortunately that year’s best Actress or supporting actress competition was so high, Same with Glenn Close 🤷, there is nothing to blame on Meryl streeps those two performances coz those performances were so good 🔥
As brilliant as Streep is I don't think she really needed her last three nominations which of course includes the two you highlighted, especially given that 'Into the Woods' was an ensemble film.
People are arguing that "Jennifer Lopez was playing herself" in Hustlers… that's a terrible argument because Brad Pitt basically played himself in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and won the Oscar that year and Margot Robbie basically played herself in Bombshell and was nominated that year.
@@AlertedDust by your logic on a normal day Jennifer Lopez dances on a pole and drugs people in order to steal their money. I mean that people are trying to say Jennifer did not give any depth and by their logic the same can apply to Brad and Margot so it is not a good argument.
I’m honestly shocked people were outraged she wasn’t nominated. I thought she was alright, she just didn’t disappear into the role. I didn’t find anything about her performance award worthy. But then again I feel the same way about Laura Dern so🤷🏽♂️
@@poett8875 honestly the entire Best Supporting Actress category that year was lackluster but I personally think Jennifer was more worthy than Laura and Kathy.
@@poett8875 that's fair, the point of my comment was to point out the hypocrisy of that statement. Many do feel she did not disappear into the role, as you stated, but the same thing applies to Brad and Margot and they still got nominated and Brad won so this whole narrative that Jennifer was playing herself really holds no weight.
That was such a terrible move for the Oscars. I think he would have won that year as well, against Steve Carrell (Foxcatcher), Bradley Cooper (American Sniper), Benedict Cumberbatch (Imitation Game), and Michael Keaton (Birdman)?? That was his finest performance, creepily good, and physically transformative, not to mention it was an incredibly engrossing film. Without a doubt, bs
@NeverLetMeGo777 you might think so, but I've literally never heard anyone mention that performance in that regard. Even so, I'm assuming you think this would be the best performance of her career, but again, I've never encountered anyone who thinks so. I'm not saying you're wrong, but she's done stellar work - work that I hold in higher regard that she hadn't won or been nominated for. For my money, boogie nights is her best, but naturally I'm biased. I love that movie.
@thankyoujodi Still Alice and The Hours are the absolute best from Julianne. But then again, she has delivered so many amazing performances in her career, so it is understandable that some of her more 'showy' and 'louder' performances are better liked. But what she did in Still Alice, the subtlety and nuances, how she peeled away so slowly layer by layer and little by little requires so much of the masterful acting skils that only an actor of Julianne's caliber can deliver.
You can't talk about Denzel in Roman J Israel Esq. without talking about James Franco in The Disaster Artist. It was Franco's nomination to lose but when the accusations against him came out, Denzel was the next man up.
We're sleeping on Denzel's performane as Roman J Israel. It's a mid film with a seemingly unfinished screenplay that cant tell what it wants to be...political justice piece? Suddenly it's a thriller? But Denzel is flawless in that film, and it's absolutely one of his most compelling and interesting performances. Awards Contender seems to have missed the point that his character is clearly a hyper-intelligent high-functioning autist and Denzel's portrayal of said character is one of the best portrayals of autistm in cinema history. Denzel isn't just "in mild prostestics", he had an extreme mental transformation into a character he's never played before and is rarely portrayed in mainstream cinema to any form of accuracy. It's brilliant. He earned that nomination.
_Rush_ was great when it came out. I never rewatched it though until like 2022 when I caught it on TV and it was just nowhere near as great as I remembered it being. I think it was because of _Ford v Ferrari_ which was so good that it makes _Rush_ feel so small in scope by comparison. Also, _Rush_ doesn't really make you feel the weight of the racing and of the engines the way _Ford v Ferrari_ does. But Bruhl should've been nominated for sure. But the movie was a flop and Bruhl is/was not "part of the Hollywood club" so to speak, so he missed.
I think instead of Denzel, they were probably going to nominate James Franco for the disaster artist, that is until the allegations came out… so they’re like who do we nominate instead? Tom Hanks for the post? Not. Steve Carell for The Battle of the Sexes? Maybe.. Denzel Washington? Fine😅
Franco won Globes for Comedy and I'd argue was a contender in winning until his allegations surfaced. Oldman was sweeping but Franco was still getting in everywhere except BAFTA, so when the allegations arose and he didn't make it to Oscar 5 I was not surprised he didn't make it. Did not expect Denzel but I guess the SAG nom benefitted him
These never would’ve happened, but nominations for Ryan Gosling in Blade Runner 2049 or Hugh Jackman in Logan would be all timers, way more deserving than just another Denzel Washington performance.
10. 0:22 Laura Dern / Wild 9. 2:21 Denzel Washington / Roman J Israel, Esq. 8. 4:03 Bradley Cooper / American Hustle 7. 5:50 Jacki Weaver / Silver Linings Playbook 6. 7:38 Charlize Theron / Bombshell 5. 9:51 Kathy Bates / Richard Jewell (I love Kathy but I agree 100% Jlo on Hustlers deserved it more 😤) 4. 12:40 Eddy Redmaine / The Danish Girl 3. 14:17 Kenneth Branaugh / My Week With Marilyn 2. 16:31 Meryl Streep / Florence Foster Jenkins 1. 19:21 Sam Rockwell / Vice
I agree with having Sam Rockwell, Meryl Streep, Eddie Redmayne, and Denzel Washington on this list for those particular performances. I disagree about Jacki Weaver, Bradley Cooper, and Charlize Theron, I think they all deserved their nominations.
I don't know if you're reading this Brian, but from the other side of the globe, I cannot describe how much your videos mean to me. Oscars are kind of a niche interest, and living in a small town in the Balkans, I have no one to exchange opinions with. I hope you do more best and worst nominations per decade, as well as rank acting wins for every category in recent decades. Those are my favourite videos of yours! ❤
I know JLO has a reputation for thinking highly of herself but that snub for Hustlers is an occasion when she was 100% correct. She was a dynamic force of nature in Hustlers and it should have at least been recognized with a nomination.
I actually called JLo getting snubbed for _Hustlers,_ I knew it was gonna happen and everyone thought I was crazy. The reason is cuz JLo is really not that respected at least as an actress by the folks in the Academy. To me, they see her more as a pop singer who sometimes acts instead of being a "real" actress. But Lady Gaga will get nominated cuz everybody actually loves and respects her.
@@kidcarroll7312 I would love to see Gaga win an acting Oscar. She already has one for music. It would bring her career full circle and put her with Barbara as one of the greats.
Mine: 1. Jennifer Lawrence (Joy) …. should’ve been Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) 2. Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) …. should’ve been Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) 3. Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) …. should’ve been Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems) 4. Eddie Redmayne (Danish Girl) …. should’ve been Jake Gyllenhaal (Southpaw) 5. Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) …. should’ve been Ethan Hawke (First Reformed) 6. Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins) …. should’ve been Amy Adams (Arrival) 7. Rachel McAdams (Spotlight) …. should’ve been Jessica Chastain (Crimson Peak) 8. Meryl Streep (Into the Woods) …. should’ve been Jessica Chastain (Interstellar or A Most Violent Year) 9. Christian Bale (American Hustle) …. should’ve been Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) 10. Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) …. should’ve been Kelly Reilly (Flight)
I'll agree with you on Jennifer Lawrence, Eddie Redmayne, Jonathan Pryce, and Rachel McAdams. I strongly disagree with your take on Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) and Christian Bale (American Hustle), they both gave amazing performances, I would have voted them for the wins if I were an Academy member.
They just didnt want jlo to be known as an oscar nominated actress thats why they gave kathy bates that nomination 😂 Jlo wanted that nomination so bad. She campaigned HEAVILY. Giving interviews, magazine covers, wearing extravagant gowns and outfits etc the whole 9 yards .She was everywhere.
And I'm really glad that she doesn't have that to her name 😂 imagine... Industry plant untalented overhyped bully JLo being referred to as "Oscar nominated Jennifer Lopez".. yuck
@ericryanyawl9401 thats exactly what Jamie Lynn Curtis did. For campaigning that is what it is about. Its been said on this channel that a kick ass acceptance speech can even keep you in the conversation
Lol Laura Dern is actually an inspired nom. Just because she doesn't have a lot of screen time and doesn't cry and scream into your face doesn't mean she was bad. She did take a paper thin character and created a haunting character which gives and helps Reese performance to have an emotionally punch. Subtle acting at its best. But Brian is not a fan of subtle performances. There are no small roles only small actresses.
Yes, I liked the "minor key" performance like Laura's gets nominated at the Oscars. They're a long shot to win, but the impact of such roles totally enrich the movie. Wild made be blue so much when I saw it, deeply felt.
Well said. I thought she was luminous & memorable in a role that could have been the opposite. She really shone & made you understand why Cheryl did what she did
I think with American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook: the Academy seemed to be on a real David O. Russell high for a while. They seem to do this thing where certain filmmakers are front-and-center as their chosen “it” directors, and they’ll shower that filmmaker and their work with love and nominations, regardless of the quality. And I think Russell was that for a time. He’s fallen off of that in recent years, especially with his work on films like Amsterdam, and the resurfacing of his abusive tendencies on his film sets (especially towards George Clooney, Lily Tomlin, and Amy Adams). But I think that may explain why those films got so much love in those years, he was just one of “their guys” at that time. Though I agree, American Hustle didn’t click with me when I saw it. And it doesn’t seem to have aged all that well either.
I was going to post the same disagreement. She was tremendously moving in that role, one of my favorite Streep performances. She took a character that at first glance seemed to be a self-deluded, overly indulged socialite and peeled back the layers to reveal a deeply wounded, yet still caring, vulnerable and generous spirit. I loved that film. Plus it inspired me to look up the history of the real Florence Foster Jenkins.
It was a much better role and performance than her Thatcher role (due to a bad directing by Phyllida Lloyd. I thoroughly enjoyed her acting, she was cute, emotional, funny and not ham!
Mark Ruffalo for Spotlight was a terrible nomination. The fact that Mark Rylance inexplicably won that year for Bridge of Spies notwithstanding, I think all of the following gave more challenging and memorable supporting performances than Ruffalo: Paul Giamatti in Straight Outta Compton and Love and Mercy Oscar Isaac in Ex Machina Benicio del Toro in Sicario Steve Carrel in The Big Short (Christian Bale was nominated for this movie) Michael Stuhlbarg in Steve Jobs Will Poulter in The Revenant
I can’t even imagine someone can play Florence Foster Jenkins rather than Meryl Streep, She played that role how FFJ was 🤷, She deserves that nomination 🔥
Jacki Weaver's nomination for SLP baffles me to this day. I could not find one scene nor moment that warranted an Oscar nomination. I felt the same about Marina de Tavira's nomination for Roma, though I know several think that nomination was deserved.
I really don’t agree with your opinion on Bombshell. I wasn’t a fan of the film, but i think it’s carried by its acting. Theron, Kidman, and Robbie were all excellent.
Jennifer Lawrence was terrible in American Hustle. TERRIBLE. Just more of her typical, over the top "look at me everyone, I'm acting. I'm acting REALLY hard" performances. Not to mention she was way too young for that part. What a ridiculous nomination that was. 🙄
American hustle was completely oscar-bait, i dont understand why it won golden globe and Saga, Her and wolf of walle street got snubbed for globes and whatever was in Saga.
I’ve always said it but y’all can say what y’all want about Jennifer Lopez but Chica can ACT the house down when she wants too. I’m still shocked that she wasn’t nominated for her all timer performance in “Selena” she embodied THE ICON HERSELF. I’ve always gotten the flack about her music but never about her acting.
15:30 it felt like the whole novelty of “oh Lawrence Oliver starred and directed all those Shakespeare movies in the ‘40s and ‘50s and then Branagh did the same thing in the ‘80s and ‘90s and now he’s playing Oliver so cool” got him the nom
How about Dame Judy being nominated for and winning supporting actress for Sheakespear in love? She even said that it was miraculous for an 8 minute role. That whole year was rigged. Paltrow for best actress and best picture? Give me a Fing break.
I completely disagree with you putting Laura Dern in Wild on the list. She is great in the movie. Limited Screen time but huge impact on the Story. She deserved the nomination.
I agree with most of your choices, and while I don't want to suggest all of Meryl's nominations are award-worthy, I would commend 'Florence,' knowing as a singer myself how genuinely hard it is to sing off-key and badly when you are naturally gifted in voice as Meryl is. Her nom for 'Into the Woods is even worse...
Laura Dern has so much muscle within the Academy, that the nomination for Wild albeit unnecessary doesn't surprise me. I like when Denzel plays against his typical huffing and puffing characters. So it's refreshing to see that Roman nomination. If you ask me, I would've nominated James Franco instead but we all know that wasn't happening. What is it with David O. Russell and his actors, I mean... they get in! When J.Lo missed BAFTA I already knew she wasn't going to make it in the Oscars. I don't understand the disdain for Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl. He was fantastic!! I love that Florence nomination for Meryl Streep 🤭 I still have to think about who I would take out that year because yes, Amy Adams was snubbed that year! That Rockwell nomination was crazy indeed! Timothee Chalamet should've been in there instead for Beautiful Boy. Wonderful video once again!
It's clear that there are certain reasons why Eddie Redmayne gets hate for that role which is unfair cause that performance is so emotionally good but unfortunately people can't see through their biases. I probably wouldn't have nominated Denzel either but the Franco allegations were very serious plus it was during the metoo movement so there was no choice.
I think it was Michael Caine who once stated that it isn't the performance that wins an Oscar, it is the role that wins the Oscar. This also seems to be true of nominations.
Sam Rockwell.... Lol, but I thought he was better in Charlie's Angels -vs- Vice. At least CA made me notice him as an actor and go who is this? -- Vice seems like more of a potential good karma nod?!? --- Rockwell did star in Clownhouse, a pretty decent low budget slasher, but behind the scenes was horrendous. Then Sam did spend well over a decade after that trying to get some momentum going, to be noticed. And one thing I do have to give younger Sam credit for is, it seems like he was willing to take on any role, do anything for the role and showed a lotta drive.
I liked Vice and Bombshell more than most people so I'm fine with the acting noms from those films. The makeup jobs were truly excellent and deservedly won. In 2017, Denzel was the safe better option for that last best actor slot cause there was no one else plus James Franco clearly was not getting in cause of the allegations. Let's be honest, the Academy were never gonna take JLo seriously and that Kathy Bates nom was absolutely deserving. And I don't get the Eddie Redmayne hate still, it's nowhere near cringe and actually very affecting.
22:54 I think Meryl Streep should have been nominated for Plenty. She was so slick in a movie that is so full of mysterus nuances. Another movies tat sesudave been nominated was Calling In Love with Robert de Niro. It speaks of how a casual acqarace can tur iito blossoming girl boy reatosp ta dersettifteUited Staesite 80s. Very rrfreging role for Meryl Streep. Something like a breakout
Disagree about Laura Dern and "Wild." But I've always noticed the Oscars are suckers for roles in which the actor physically "transforms" their appearance, and your list reflects that.
Sounds like I'm in the minority, but I will die on the hill of Jackie Weaver deserving her nomination. Silver Linings was my introduction to her, and she blew me away. She's playing a character who has been sidelined for decades by bigger personalities and bigger problems, and she's like a live wire of repressed anxiety and exasperation, trying to keep her family in the realm of sanity--just like the actress herself grounds every scene she's in, more often than not through hilarious facial expressions and carriage rather than dialogue. In an era of "strong women" being dominant in the conversation (whether they're well-written or not), I love seeing more naturally timid or patient characters show their strength in more subtle ways. Mama bear, she may not be, but more than anyone else in the film, Jackie made me believe her character could be a real person. It's not an exceptional movie, but I had a similar response to Amy Adams' character in Big Eyes. The way she carried her anxiety in her body reminded me so much of my own mother's mannerisms.
Amy Adams and Albert Brooks exclusions are truly baffling. Both are career bests, as are Jake Gyllenhaal and Renee Russo. All 4 performances are Oscar worthy wins, not just nominations. The Academy kind of sucks
Amy Adams not getting a nomination for Arrival was A CRIME. I LOVE Meryl Streep but I hate the fact that she just needs to breathe for the academy to give her ANOTHER nomination
@@jacquesboyadjian9449 Brooks arguably could have won, which is Brian's position, but that doesn't quite line up to Branagh being denied a nomination in the same category. He was fantastic and brought Olivier to life with a fresh perspective (and since when has Oliver been portrayed on screen before this). There were even more forgettable nominees that year - perhaps Max Von Sydow for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which got nominations thanks to some Weinstein-style heavy pushing from super producer Scott Rudin.
I agree with Brian. It just struck me as a "oh we have a renowned UK Shakespearean actor impesonating a legendary UK Shakespearean actor? Let's nominate him!" Mid performance in a bad movie. The role Branagh should have been nominated and was not was Iago in Othello (1995),
I love Sir Kenneth. He could read the phone book and I’d love it. I thought he did a very good Sir Olivier. He was superb as Iago and also in Dead Again. Why wasn’t he nominated for that? He played two different characters and hit it out of the park! I wish he’d star in more movies instead of always directing. Esther Schwartz
My Top 10 Worst Oscar nominations of the 2010's 1. Meryl Streep for Best Actress (Florence Foster Jenkins) 2. Eddie Redmayne for Best Actor (The Danish Girl) 3. Robert Duvall for Best Supporting Actor (The Judge) 4. Max Von Sydow for Best Supporting Actor (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close) 5. Ruth Negga for Best Actress (Loving) 6. Jackie Weaver for Best Supporting Actress (Silver Linings Playbook) 7. Sam Rockwell for Best Supporting Actor (Vice) 8. Denzel Washington for Best Actor (Roman J. Israel, Esq.) 9. Charlize Theron for Best Actress (Bombshell) 10.Bradley Cooper for Best Supporting Actor (American Hustle)
Ruth negga getting in for loving was a diversity nomination. Everybody was complaining oscar so white so they gave her that nomination. She did great in the movie
The academy truly wronged Nightcrawler. Zero acting nominations is criminal. I’d argue not only Gyllenhaal and Russo but ALSO Riz Ahmed should’ve gotten a supporting actor nod as well.
As always, you make some great points. Adams's snub for Arrival was astounding. Leading into the Oscars, Arrival's chances of a Best Picture and Director nod were iffy, but Adams was supposed to be the sure thing, and then nada! I think Streep is good and I know a few people who think it is one of her best performances, but I am ambivalent about it. How cool for Rene Russo - one of the most underrated actresses of the last 25 years - to get some recognition. But alas - like her performance in The Thomas Crown Affair, it was not to be. I agree with your comments about the performances from Dern, Redmayne, Bates, and Rockwell. The Washington performance for that film is absurd - it is almost like they decided to just throw nominations at Washington just for stepping on screen. I love Theron, but agree wholeheartedly that her snub for Fury Road (like Adams, she should have been the sure thing for that film) and then getting a nod for the surface glitz nonsense of Bombshell playing a not particularly likable or interesting person is puzzling. I actually think Branagh's work is better than you give it credit for in My Week With Marilyn, although he is undoubtedly overshadowed by Williams. I also think you have underrated Weaver's work in Silver Linings Playbook because her role is not as flashy as the others. Honestly, when I saw the film I somehow knew she had a good shot at a nomination. I don't get your hatred of Cooper in American Hustle though. Honestly, going into Oscars seasons there were two sure people I knew would get nods that year and they were Cooper and Lawrence from that film. I was not surprised by Bale and Adams nominations, but the precursors did not make them a sure bet. I think both Cooper and Lawrence are both doing high caliber character work in that film, which is something marquee talents rarely get a crack at. In fact, outside of A Star Is Born, I would rank this as probably Cooper's best onscreen work - with Silver Linings close behind it.
Denzel only got in that year because of James Franco’s #metoo incident… it was Oldman vs Franco that year up until that lady called out Franco for harassment
I have a sincere question I hope you answer. I often hear you, and so many other people, say "they decided to give so and so that award or that nomination" as if the Academy votes as a unit, sitting in a room deciding who will get nominated and win. I am not naive, I realize studios, agents, performers, etc. campaign, but why the narrative that everyone comes together to make these decisions when that isn't how it works. If it really does work that way and we've been lied to that individuals make their own decisions (with influence, sure) please enlighten me.
Academy voters just can't get enough of nominating actors for impersonating real life figures whether they deserve it or not and there are so many of them in the past few decades, particularly in the musical biopic genre, that are totally unwarranted.
Pattinson in Good Time over Denzel in 2017. Jake Gyllenhaal in Prisoners over Cooper in 2013. Gyllenhaal got screwed so many times in the 2010s. Should have won this year and for Nightcrawler over Redmayne. Robbie's nomination in Bombshell was way worse than Theron's nomination. Bold to say maybe but I think Bening's performance in 20th Century Women was better than Adams in Arrival and should have won over Stone.
No offense man, but you apparently don’t know much about acting. Have you ever acted, or taken an acting class, or taken a theater arts class? Do you know what character work is? Creating a character? It’s probably the most challenging thing about acting. Jacki Weaver was wonderful in Silver Linings Playbook. I was shocked to find out afterwards that she’s actually from Australia. She was soooo Philly. The run-of-the-mill performance from that movie that didn’t need to be there was actually Robert De Niro’s. Charlize Theron was so authentic as Megyn Kelly that I had to keep reminding myself that she wasn’t her. Eddie Redmayne’s portrayal in The Danish Girl was a thing of astonishing beauty. I haven’t seen the movie since it came out, and all these years later, I still remember the look in his eyes when he got his first kiss from a man, or rather when she. All the emotions and fear and elation from that life milestone played out in his eyes for just a couple of seconds. Actors strive to achieve tiny, authentic, moving effects like that in the moment. I think it’s his best performance. And Meryl Streep in Florence Foster Jenkins was absolutely hilarious. The scene where she’s singing the aria in the theater is one of the funniest moments in any movie I’ve ever seen. If there is a movie, she should not have been nominated for, it is as Music of the Heart, 1999. Not this one.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s all basically everyone’s opinion and preferences, but he acts like if he didn’t care for the nomination, there must have been some skullduggery going on.
Totally agreed on Sam Rockwell, especially since the ones snubbed that were shown actually gave much better performances. And also sadly agreed on Madame Streep. I'd replace this nomination with The River Wild, The Hours, or The Manchurian Candidate if we're talking about her great performances that were almost Oscar nominated and blow Florence Foster Jenkins out of the water. And that Amy Adams snub for Arrival still stings, that remains her best performance. And the Supporting Actress field in 2020 was incredibly weak. I wasn't a big fan of that lineup (if I had to choose, Florence Pugh was the best) but this would have been a much stronger 2020 lineup than the one we got: Jennifer Lopez - Hustlers (that snub still hurts badly) Zhao Shu-zhen - The Farewell Park So Dam - Parasite Cho Yeo Jeong - Parasite Lee Jung-eun - Parasite Hell, Robbie was even better in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood than in Bombshell. Don't really mind the Cooper or Theron nominations but I do think Lupita N'yongo in Us could have easily replaced her and I would have been happy with it. Great video, Brian 🎉
Completely disagree on The Danish Girl, Eddie gave a hell of a performance and I didn’t even see him in the role. It was a well deserved nomination methinks.
I don’t see why Jennifer Lawrence won for best actress, I thought she was so over the top and young for that role. I don’t know how she won a golden globe over Lupita Nyong’o. Regina King was ok for me but I don’t see why she swept all the awards for If Beale Street Could Talk. Emma Stone in La La Land, Bradley Cooper in everything, overrated for me.
J-Lo as..... J-Lo? C'mon man. She ran the gamut of emotions from A to B. She definitely didn't deserve an Oscar nom for Hustlers. 😂 I agree with you about Eddie Redmayne. He's overrated in everything he's in with the exception of The Theory of Everything. Meryl Streep was brilliant in Florence Foster Jenkins. I think Saoirse Ronan in Little Women and Jonah Hill in Wolf of Wall Street were worse nominations. Sam Elliott in A Star is Born wasn't great either. Plus Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce in the Two Popes weren't great. Or Jennifer Lawrence in Joy. And Robert Duvall in The Judge.
J-Lo was good in _Hustlers_ but I knew she'd get overlooked by the Academy cuz she's not respected in the same way that "real" actors are. She's looked at as a popstar who sometimes acts. I'm not particularly upset she didn't get the nod though. Robert Duvall in _The Judge_ is indeed not that memorable cuz the movie itself is not memorable. It's just not a good movie in general. Eddie Redmayne, while I like him, I think is overrated as well. He shouldn't have won. His movies are all forgettable Oscar bait. Keaton should have won for _Birdman._ Jennifer Lawrence stands out in _Joy._ Not a great movie though. Had she missed out, I wouldn't be that bothered. Meryl Streep was good in _Florence Foster Jenkins_ but who even remembers that movie anymore. Saoirse Ronan in _Little Women_ is fine, she always is. She didn't need a nod for it, although Florence Pugh steals the movie. But it's not even that great of an adaptation of the book. The 1994 version is by far the best. Sam Elliott is very memorable in _A Star Is Born._ In fact, he's probably the best thing about the movie. Jonah Hill was a scene stealer in _The Wolf of Wall Street._ Jonathan Pryce and Hopkins were OUTSTANDING in the _The Two Popes._ What are you talking about?
@@rustincohle2135 I remember Meryl Streep in Florence Foster Jenkins. It's one of my favourite performances of hers. She's hilarious in that movie. As is Hugh Grant who should have received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination.
I agree with BOMBSHELL. I was excited cause it was directed by Jay Roach. Cause he did GAME CHANGE with Jullianne Moore as Sarah Palin. And nobody should call that a impersonation. But BOMBSHELL did nothing & felt people in costumes. There were times I thought the tone was very oddly weird for me, times I thought there was weird black comedy undertones in it. I always felt the Academy gave recognition cause of the Post Me Too/Weinstein & maybe Academy wanted to do some reckoning over that.
Normally I agree with you, but you lost me with this video! Charlize Theron became Megyn Kelly in Bombshell and not only deserved the nomination but should have won over Renee Zellweger's horrid impersonation of Judy Garland, and I adored the film American Hustle, it was my favorite from that year! I do agree with Denzel only getting nominated because they needed to fill a spot, but you failed to mention James Franco who was a shoo in until allegations surfaced about him and I also agree about Laura Dern and Kathy Bates, Jennifer Lopez was robbed!
First time I don't agree with you re: most of these 10! I do agree about JLo and Meryl. I do agree that I forgot Laura Dern was in WILD! I liked BOMBSHELL more than you did. Didn't like Nicole Kidman in that film. One I would add would be Florence Pugh.
4:22 😮😮😮 Really, I loved that movie. I enjoyed all the characters and the story too. It was all over the place. Of course I agree Bradley Cooper and wasn't worthy but Amy Adams was fantastic and I say this as a person who often gets annoyed when I watch her. Not sure why, her and Nicole Kidman who I think are great actresses often make me think "I see you the actress more than the character."
I think a lot of voters liked the idea of well-known actors mocking politicians that they don't like, they probably saw it as their way of taking a shot at Bush. Activism is fine, go ahead and speak up about politics on social media if you wish, but don't deny a more deserving actor of an Oscar nomination.
Oh my god, I'm so with you on those, especially circa 2013-2016 Oscar seasons. The snobs you mentioned(BlackMass, Arrival, MadMax, 45 years, Exmachina...) was the reasons I eventually realize Oscar was just a game that was not all about good craftsmanship and gave up on following Oscar. I would also wish Annette Bening got nominated for 20century women in best actress in a leading role and even win
Totally cannot agree with you at all on Eddie Redmayne in the Danish Girl. He absolutely should have won for the Danish Girl instead of the Theory of Everything.
I agree with you 100% on Sam Rockwell. They just gave it to him because he played Bush and Bush is a guy that's fun to do impressions of. If anyone should have been nominated for Vice in that category, it should have been Steve Carell. He was great as Rumsfeld.
The fact that Meryl Streep was nominated for "Florence Foster Jenkins" and "Into the Woods" but Toni Colette wasn't for "Hereditary" says everything about the Oscars.
Exactly! This is why I don’t watch it. 😑 I just get a more authentic analysis/appreciation for the art from channels like this.
Add Music of the Heart to that list. What a joke. Over Winona Ryder in Girl, Interrupted? No way. Completely ridiculous.
So on a normal day for Brad he bashes people's face in whilst on acid
Night crawler deserved alot of oscar nominations
Best actor
Best supporting actress and supporting actor
Best director
Best screenplay
Best picture
I'd also add on best cinematography
Nightcrawler is one of my favorite movies.
It should had been nominated over american sniper at the very least
Renee Russo definitely deserved a nomination that year, especially over Kathy Bates and Dern
I agree, Arrival is Amy Adams' best performance. What sucks, is she's likely to win for something much worse - like Julianne Moore.
Excuse me, Julianne Moore in Still Alice is one of the greatest Best Actress wins EVER.
@@NeverLetMeGo777Far From Heaven
I think Julianne Moore should have won an Oscar for Boogie Nights.
You can't talk about Denzel in Roman J Israel Esq. without talking about James Franco in The Disaster Artist. It was Franco's nomination to lose but when the accusations against him came out, Denzel was the next man up.
I was thinking the same thing!
Daniel bruhl from rush should have been nominated over Bradley cooper. Rush is such a great film
Daniel Bruhl was robbed! But he's a lead in Rush. Keep Bradley in Supporting, but drop Bale from lead and get Bruhl in…
He was a lead though... but I can see the Academy doing a category fraud (Chris Hemsworth was a bigger star).
Rush, a great film indeed.
Yes, loved Rush!
Fine😅
Also bc he’d unfairly lost to Casey
Also BCoops was killer in American Hustle
Franco won Globes for Comedy and I'd argue was a contender in winning until his allegations surfaced. Oldman was sweeping but Franco was still getting in everywhere except BAFTA, so when the allegations arose and he didn't make it to Oscar 5 I was not surprised he didn't make it. Did not expect Denzel but I guess the SAG nom benefitted him

I have gone on and experienced many unexplainable phenomena of the universe. But nothing trumps Amy Adams not being nominated for Arrival.
Absolutely
Sam Rockwell was riding high on the popularity train when he was nominated for Vice
I saw that described somewhere at the time as his 'victory lap nomination' following the win for Three Billboards... the previous year!
Sam Rockwell is a genius actor😊
@@rustincohle2135 oh yeah-Lady Gaga has definitely followed the Cher route of achieving Oscar glory. One more nomination and she’ll have her Oscar.

They just didnt want jlo to be known as an oscar nominated actress thats why they gave kathy bates that nomination 😂
Jlo wanted that nomination so bad. She campaigned HEAVILY. Giving interviews, magazine covers, wearing extravagant gowns and outfits etc the whole 9 yards .She was everywhere.
It's not supposed to be about that.
I agree that J Lo earned a nomination. There is bias in nearly the award shows, most definitely in the Oscars. Sadly

I disagree with your statement about Meryl Streep in "Florence Foster Jenkins." I thought she was brilliant in this role.
She’s surprisingly moving in that role, my top two in that 2016 actress category!
She was brilliant indeed
I was going to post the same disagreement. She was tremendously moving in that role, one of my favorite Streep performances. She took a character that at first glance seemed to be a self-deluded, overly indulged socialite and peeled back the layers to reveal a deeply wounded, yet still caring, vulnerable and generous spirit. I loved that film. Plus it inspired me to look up the history of the real Florence Foster Jenkins.
The generally more light story roles taking fire maybe 😏
It was a much better role and performance than her Thatcher role (due to a bad directing by Phyllida Lloyd. I thoroughly enjoyed her acting, she was cute, emotional, funny and not ham!
Mark Ruffalo for Spotlight was a terrible nomination. The fact that Mark Rylance inexplicably won that year for Bridge of Spies notwithstanding, I think all of the following gave more challenging and memorable supporting performances than Ruffalo:
Paul Giamatti in Straight Outta Compton and Love and Mercy
Oscar Isaac in Ex Machina
Benicio del Toro in Sicario
Steve Carrel in The Big Short (Christian Bale was nominated for this movie)
Michael Stuhlbarg in Steve Jobs
Will Poulter in The Revenant
Michael Keaton should have been nominated for _Spotlight._

I loved Laura Dern in the Wild! She's the absolute heart of the movie in a very little screen time she was in

Dern is generally overrated. I mean she is quite terrible in PALM ROYALE. Seems like she plays the same character over and over again.

How she didn’t sweep the season for “Selena” is BEYOND ME.
Id take out Jonathan price for the two popes and put in taron egerton in rocket man
JLO was really good in Hustlers and should have received a nomination
I called the JLo snub too back in the day. But Chalamet didn't warrant it. He's all hype.
The thing these nominations have in common is that they’re past nominees. We know the Academy is lazy as hell.
I think Music of the Heart was Meryl’s worst nomination, no FFJ. FFJ is so entertaining and Meryl is good faking her bad singing.
I just think that Meryl’s worst is still better than other’s best performances
9:54 I rewatched it again and didn't like the film. It maybe didn't age well but people loved this film at the time for the wrong reasons.
Spot on for every remark!
Christian Bale was great as Cheney and deserved his nomination. But Rockwell's made me go "what? Really?"
22:54 I think Meryl Streep should have been nominated for Plenty.
She was so slick in a movie that is so full of mysterus nuances.

Great insight - love the shout out to Amy Adams in Big Eyes
Amy Adams and Albert Brooks exclusions are truly baffling. Both are career bests, as are Jake Gyllenhaal and Renee Russo. All 4 performances are Oscar worthy wins, not just nominations. The Academy kind of sucks
You are dead wrong about Kenneth Branagh. He's great and totally deserved to be nominated.
Amy Adams not getting a nomination for Arrival was A CRIME. I LOVE Meryl Streep but I hate the fact that she just needs to breathe for the academy to give her ANOTHER nomination
Defending Your Life is the title of the Albert Brooks film.

@@jacquesboyadjian9449 Brooks arguably could have won, which is Brian's position, but that doesn't quite line up to Branagh being denied a nomination in the same category.

If “Vice” was gonna get a supporting actor nomination, it should’ve been for Steve Carell
Alex Wolf definitely deserved a nomination for "Hereditary". Same as Toni Colette.
Jeremy Renner gave the best performance in AMERICAN HUSTLE and was the one lead who didn't get in.
Denzel only got in that year because of James Franco’s #metoo incident… it was Oldman vs Franco that year up until that lady called out Franco for harassment
Loved all of the performances you mentioned! 😂 Streep in FFJ was phenomenal.
My only gripe here on this one is Michelle Williams as Marilyn is one of my favorite performances of all time! I absolutely love her!
Academy voters just can't get enough of nominating actors for impersonating real life figures whether they deserve it or not and there are so many of them in the past few decades, particularly in the musical biopic genre, that are totally unwarranted.
I know. It’s so annoying. Want to win an Oscar: play a famous dead person.
I'm glad someone else said Laura dern's win for the marriage story is not great. I am not a fan of that win either.
The fact that Amy Adams should have won the Oscar for Arrival and wasnt even nominated 😢
I think you missed a mile on Florence Foster Jenkins. I thought she was delightful in it. What was that Amy Adams movie you mentioned?
Totally agreed on Sam Rockwell, especially since the ones snubbed that were shown actually gave much better performances.
And also sadly agreed on Madame Streep. I'd replace this nomination with The River Wild, The Hours, or The Manchurian Candidate if we're talking about her great performances that were almost Oscar nominated and blow Florence Foster Jenkins out of the water. And that Amy Adams snub for Arrival still stings, that remains her best performance.
And the Supporting Actress field in 2020 was incredibly weak. I wasn't a big fan of that lineup (if I had to choose, Florence Pugh was the best) but this would have been a much stronger 2020 lineup than the one we got:
Jennifer Lopez - Hustlers (that snub still hurts badly)
Zhao Shu-zhen - The Farewell
Park So Dam - Parasite
Cho Yeo Jeong - Parasite
Lee Jung-eun - Parasite
Hell, Robbie was even better in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood than in Bombshell.
Don't really mind the Cooper or Theron nominations but I do think Lupita N'yongo in Us could have easily replaced her and I would have been happy with it. Great video, Brian 🎉
Not nominating anyone from Parasite was ridiculous.
@@FrakkinToasterLuvva Especially Song Kang Ho, heavily deserved a Marina De Tavira Roma style nomination for Supporting Actor!
Laura Dern was phenomenal IMO
Judy Dench getting the best supporting actress nomination instead of Catríona Balfe for Belfast. Hands-down. Such a snub.
Did not remember Branagh was even IN My Week with Marilyn I’m SHOCKED he was nominated
Completely disagree on The Danish Girl, Eddie gave a hell of a performance and I didn’t even see him in the role.
It was a well deserved nomination methinks.
I can’t believe you think JLO should’ve gotten an Oscar nomination. Give me a break 🤣💀
Hey there! If possiable, can you keep up this series? I really like it!
Yes J Lo bro. i honestly have no idea how to defend her performance without exposing myself😅 i best keep shut
Keaton should have won for _Birdman._
Jennifer Lawrence stands out in _Joy._ Not a great movie though.
Jonah Hill was a scene stealer in _The Wolf of Wall Street._
Jonathan Pryce and Hopkins were OUTSTANDING in the _The Two Popes._ What are you talking about?
Love the videos, man. Keep it up!!!
Eighth Grade getting no recognition is a crime
Normally I agree with you, but you lost me with this video! Charlize Theron became Megyn Kelly in Bombshell and not only deserved the nomination but should have won over Renee Zellweger's horrid impersonation of Judy Garland, and I adored the film American Hustle, it was my favorite from that year! I do agree with Denzel only getting nominated because they needed to fill a spot, but you failed to mention James Franco who was a shoo in until allegations surfaced about him and I also agree about Laura Dern and Kathy Bates, Jennifer Lopez was robbed!
Omg I love you!❤️ I agree with so much of what you say. Glad to find a movie nominee snub soulmate 😍😂
First time I don't agree with you re: most of these 10! I do agree about JLo and Meryl. I do agree that I forgot Laura Dern was in WILD! I liked BOMBSHELL more than you did. Didn't like Nicole Kidman in that film. One I would add would be Florence Pugh.
Florence Pugh should have won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar instead of Laura Dern at the 2020 awards ceremony in my opinion.
Bradley Cooper is the best part of American Hustle, imo. His sweaty, manic energy works perfect for that character and plays against type.
I would have taken out all the Vice nominations it’s for makeup . When I finally saw it I was shocked there was so much Oscar buzz about it.
I think a lot of voters liked the idea of well-known actors mocking politicians that they don't like, they probably saw it as their way of taking a shot at Bush. Activism is fine, go ahead and speak up about politics on social media if you wish, but don't deny a more deserving actor of an Oscar nomination.
@@davedavis8786 I liked the idea of it but and I do think Bale did the best job here but I don't know if I would go as far as the nominations .
Come on, Christian Bale was amazing.
Jennifer Lopez over Kathy Bates, and Albert Brooks over Kenneth Branagh, Amy Adams over Meryl Streep are spot on 🤝🏼👌🏼
Defending My Life is one of my favorite movies. Funny and touching and he did such a great job.
they were just making up for not nominating Laura for Jurassic park back in the day. 😹
Yeah why didn’t the guy who played Richard jewell get a nom
Laura's "I'm not going to be a mom any more" in "The Fault in Our Stars" is fucking heartbreaking.
I agree with you! He was fantastic in The Danish Girl!!
No no and no
Anything David O. Russell related is sketchy. Also they need to stop nominating Cooper and Lawrence.
Well Cooper, but not JLaw.
@@rustincohle2135 Joy was not worthy of a nomination.
Alan Arkin's Oscar win for Little Miss Sunshine and his nomination for Argo still pisses me off to this day!
I agree with you 100% on Sam Rockwell. They just gave it to him because he played Bush and Bush is a guy that's fun to do impressions of. If anyone should have been nominated for Vice in that category, it should have been Steve Carell. He was great as Rumsfeld.
