I had the pleasure of getting to sit in the back of Jon Lord on this tour at the Hollywood Sportatorium in Hollywood Florida .I snuck on the stage and sat in back of him for about 15 minutes before I got kicked off the stage
Purple is still great. Just heard them 8 months ago with "songs that built rock". Gillan was in amazing vocal form, the best I`ve heard from him in many years. The rest of the band played superbly. Bananas is one of Purples best albums. Deep Purple is still Deep Purple. I`m sure Jon Lord would agree. R.I.P., Jon, the best rock organist ever and a wonderful person.
Setlist: • Highway Star • Nobody’s Home • Strange Kind of Woman • A Gyspsy’s Kiss • Perfect Strangers • Under The Gun • Lazy • Knocking At Your Back Door • Solos • Space Truckin’ • Woman From Tokyo • Black Night • Smoke On The Water
Jon Lord most often played a specially customised Hammond C-3. Heavy beast for the crew to move lol. I grew up learning on an X77 and it didn't like being moved lol. Cheers.
The few seconds of melodic guitar Ritchie plays during the solo to Highway Star is perfect. Gillan wasnt well during this gig but went for it anyway. RIP Jon: musician, composer and proud Englishman.
R.I.P. Jon Lord !!! One of the trio of masters has sadly left... There will be nothing better than the Blackmore, Lord, Paice combination.... You'll be missed Jon.
Greatest 1st concert @ 15, never to forget... Had to see the show again, as if I forgot. It was a hell of a reality check. Miss the old Arena shows!!!!
It's normal that Ian Gillan was not That good he was sick, but he still made the concert... The singers of today if break a nail don't go to the stage, so Ian Gillan deserves all the credit.
And yet even on a bad night, he sounds so much better than so many singers...and without auto-tune and other effects,,,wish I could sound half as good as he does here!
the greatest band of all time, MKII line-up at its best, reunion of 1984, which led to the release of another classic album perfect strangers. Paice, Lord, Blackmore, Gillan and Glover !!! They're The Masters... The most underrated band of all time !!! nobody can come close to deep purple and their live performances... ritchie's technique is ineffably awesome !!!
Couldn't agree with you more. I have seen Deep Purple 4 times in my life. The first time was when they opened for Rod Stuart and the Faces in 1970 and they blew the place apart! Very sad to hear about Jon Lord passing and I don't care what anyone says, Blackmore is the greatest rock guitarist ever!
Also Ritchie Blackmore never said that Gillan couldn't sing. He has been quoted many times praising his vocal talents. he didn't get on with him personally.
Thank you so much, great sound quality and picture of the original WDR broadcast. When Rockpalast broadcasted this originally in 1985 they made us wait til about 2 am because that dwarf Prince was also live in concert. I was a little dissapointed about the state of Gillan's voice back then, but never mind eh? I think he ruined it on that notorious Black Sabbath Born Again Tour where he did a great job.
La banda Morado Profundo sobrevivirán hasta el final de los tiempos. Su rock es simplemente Divino, Energético, Extraordinario, Puro. Poderoso, Unico, Revolucionario, Permanente, Lapidario, Eterno.
Watching this footage, I still marvel over the fact that 'Perfect Strangers' was basically a reunion album. Can anyone remember the last "reunion" album that was worth anything more than the vinyl it was pressed on? Not me! Despite the complaints about Ian's voice, I think he held it together pretty well here. Thank you for posting!
He had a bad cold plus vocal nodes during this particular gig I ment. Sadly it was the only full lenght DP show from the 'Perfect Strangers' tour that has surfaced in pro-shot quality yet. He was struggling with the vocal nodes through this tour, and even for some time in 1987/88. Gillan cut down on the cigarettes and the hard booze during excessive touring after that, plus he sobered up when he was out of Purple. He var revitalised and sagn better when he came back in 1992/93. Sobered up.
Inspite of that what I wrote here - have a look on the video with Rainbow in Munich live 1977, a great Blackmore here now, strong playing with full power. I think he had his best times in the 70´s and in the first Rainbow years he really showed who the master is.
The band stopped for two maybe three nights in Dallas Tx on this tour(Reunion Arena). They returned latter in the tour to headline the 85 Texas World Music Festival (Cotton Bowl) I saw the Cotton Bowl show...loved the band, but Jon Lord was the stand out. He used his old set up and was ROCKIN that consol BACK and FORTH ...never fell over. far well to a Master.
It's great seeing this on here! I saw Deep Purple in 1993 (yes, the Mark 2 version), and they put on a slamming live show! It's a shame that Jon ain't with us no more, but his part in Deep Purple will not be forgotten!

Great job at filming. Sound is pretty good too! One of my all time favorite bands w/ original lineup Awesome. One of the first concerts I went to back in "72. Thankx for the wonderfull memories!
Que formação clássica!! valeu Thijs3FM por ter enviado essa preciosidade!!show show..... a banda totalmente afinada..mais um grande show no rockpalast.
I was there and I lost 10% of auditions. Because I was closed to Jon of the left of the stage ! What a fantastic night. Maybe the last tour with a really friendly band. I think they must stop to continue with the name of Deep Purple. Ritchie and Jon have left. Keep the memory safe please
grandisimo grupo, esta alineación fué lo mejor de la banda, recuerdo que estuve a la espera del disco luego de que se anunció la reunión, recuerdo como los primeros segundos de knocking at your back door fueron muy emotivos.
I wore through two vhs tapes of this show and saw them twice on this tour...this is the quintisential lineup. I love Mk3 era as well...but this IS Deep Purple.
As a Purple fan for almost 35 years I've seen many other acts come and go. There's no doubting the talent of all the members here. Sad that Ian had a cold. And more sad that the MK III line up never reformed-now that Jon Lord had passed it is literally impossible.
Don't have the shirt anymore, but I saw them on the same tour in Worcester, MA in the fall of 84 (I think). It was my second concert ever. I was 15. Good times. Rock on!
Please don't be too tough on Ian's vocals. Don't forget that by this time (1985) he was a forty year old and singing this repertoire is going to test anyone. I should know. I sing lead vocals in a Deep Purple tribute band and nothing gave me more respect for his voice than trying to sing these songs. I can't imagine fronting up night after night to sing this stuff.
I get it, I had to cover Ozzy and Gillian. I wouldn't criticize a vocalist who is singing that kind of music or any other. Problem is, these days kids are used to vocal guide tracks and synching. They think that's how people sound live! Respect bruh!
Gillan was having trouble with his tonsils which could not be taken care of until after the tour. Hence the somewhat rough vocal, but even so, he's still No 1...!
Goldy McJohn of Steppenwolf's early days was no slouch. Others are:Ray Manzarek of The Doors, Rick Wright of Pink Floyd, Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson of ELP. Many more were not mentioned.
Those were the days, companeros, ragazze, boys and girls of all ages. What matters me most, is the great Mr Jon lord behind the keyboards, especially the Hammond Organ. Without that, Deep Purple would never have been so deep. On the other hand, Jon Lord would never have developed without (t)his Opera cast. Or what do YOU mean?
WOOOOWWWW. Amazing download. Saw them live in Germany in 1971. Very, VERY stoned times were that I can tell you........we always made 'competitions' with GI's who could smoke some more dope. HAHAHHA. = With love from St. Petersburg / Russia, Paul
Thank you very much for putting this concert in one piece. Never had the chance to watch it. I think the way it was recorded contributed with Gillan's "bad" night. There's something not quite right with the sound overall. Both channels seemed to be unbalanced and some sounds falling between them, thus fading. Anyway, this is a great concert with something for everyone. DP had this virtue of playing each gig in a different way, like our fingerprints. A true kick ass rock band!!
The solo that Blackmore pulls out at "Knocking at your back door" in this concert is absolutely one of his finest of all time. Ian Gillan is singing is still with a lots of feel sensibility & power, despite the cough.
Jon Lord. Keyboard master. A rock legend, Him and Ritchie. The best keys guitar combination ever?
Yes, I guess, it's the best Keys Guitar Combination, FOREVER
ABSOLUTELY!!
yes they were, are and will be
Yes!
Ritchie and Jon most definitely, but there were moments with Tommy Bolin which were electrifying.
DP fan from BG since 1971. R.I.P Jon 'Hammond' Lord. You tear down the wall and shape my world! Thank you!
One of the greatest group of all time. I'm an 70s and 80s rocker the best years ever.

R.I:P Jon Lord. The greatest keyborder of the world passed away and now he is playing his serenades in heaven.
He and Keith Emmerson
Jon Lord, Keith Emerson, Ken Hensley, Richard Wright, Vincent Crane, Wooly Wolstenholme, Rick van der Linden, Ray Manzarek, Mike Pinder... a big number of famous keyboarders gone.

I had the pleasure of getting to sit in the back of Jon Lord on this tour at the Hollywood Sportatorium in Hollywood Florida .I snuck on the stage and sat in back of him for about 15 minutes before I got kicked off the stage
"Deep Purple" is playing freely on the rock music. A fabulous cocktail of rock, classical music and blues !!!
YOU are right --Deep Purple is simply great and i will love them till i die . The whole band is amazing .

R.I.P. Jon
I agree with you. This man formed Purple back in the day so in my opinion they were not appreciated as much as they should have been
B3 or C3?
Jon Lord most often played a specially customised Hammond C-3. Heavy beast for the crew to move lol. I grew up learning on an X77 and it didn't like being moved lol. Cheers.
according to Ronnie Woods brother Art ,they carried it on and off Ferries to gigs 1962-66
Thanks for upload this amazing concert ❤
The few seconds of melodic guitar Ritchie plays during the solo to Highway Star is perfect.
Gillan wasnt well during this gig but went for it anyway.

Godfather of pretentious arena 'rock'.

i agree i saw Ian perform on the perfect strangers tour in the 80's been a teenager i loved!
Gillan was having trouble with his tonsils which could not be taken care of until after the tour. Hence the somewhat rough vocal, but even so, he's still No 1...!
Great show. Thx for sharing.
Cool footage, thx for upload!
Ian has no cold he never sounds like the album bad live singer great band studio . Machine Head One of The Greatest Albums of All Time Thank You
+John Leclair So... Made in Japan is bad live performance?
+John Leclair I make you right on that one, how ever, the best LP Deep Purple came out with was Deep Purple In Rock, 69
Ian has cold, Deep Purple was one of very few bands that could play live. Than You ;)
My favorite band.

Низкий поклон.Великие люди.
Comment is unnecessary... For me the biggest legends... thank Uploader for this video ...
Paice and Blackmre wonderful on the second half of Under the Gun...
The solo that Blackmore pulls out at "Knocking at your back door" in this concert is absolutely one of his finest of all time. Ian Gillan is singing is still with a lots of feel sensibility & power, despite the cough.
Ritchie and yngwie forever one again and again merci ❤
A lot of thanks !
J'y étais ! Merci beaucoup d'avoir posté cette vidéo.
