Bit silly to say that. Listen to the way the old deejays toasted, they didn't rap, they were leaving gaps for the music, boosting up the riddims, they weren't doing verses using the music in the background as backing. Hip hop was an outlet for rappers/poets to highlight their creativity. Much as I love old Jamaican deejay stuff, you could hardly call it poetry, they were just mc-ing and hyping the songs.
Rude bwoi got a point tho, from el dicto: to rap: "talk or chat in an easy or familiar manner" check out I-Roy's style for example where he tells the story thru one stereo channel and the music track is on the other.. wicked and wild, roots style no holds barred.. rap was definitely incited by this kind of behavior and is just a part of what hip hop has evolved into... wow baybeee!!
@@joncrossland Early Hip-hop emcees did the same. This tradition goes back to radio disc jockeys. Hip-hop and Dancehall both sprung from this practice of playing music. It's disingenuous to imply that one gave birth to the other.
The Djs, from Jamaica, usually take the queue from the Selector who played a Riddim, as we call it and had to, on the spot come up with lyrics, from the top of their heads. They did not write anything down. It is pure natural talent. Each Dj, would take their turn at the mike. It was a normal thing. And with our Patois (Dialect), and how they created the flow, with the Riddim, it's just an awesome sound. Everyone wanted to challenge the next man, with who could could come up, with the best lines. That is is why our Djs, are so great at it. Fast forward Dj Kool Herc, Jamaican, introduced it in US. He still has not being recognized for this. I was listening to an interview. He was asked if he was invited invited to any of those award shows, he said no. So many people became wealthy, it's a shame that he did not even receive a lifetime achievement award for this. I see others being awarded for the genre of music though. Won't name names. Just my two cents.
@@inquisitive871 Disingenuous? I think not. Hip hop definitely came from toasting in reggae. Most hip hop pioneers were children of Caribbean immigrants who like us in Africa were listening to U-Roy, I-Roy, Dillinger and others in late sixties/ early seventies. Talking over music has been in Africa from time immemorial but the link between hip hop and reggae is unquestionable.
